Another Paternity Leave Installment, and we're grabbing another wildly problematic episode pulled from the back catalog. As mentioned over the past couple of months, this has been behind the Patreon paywall for a while. Patreon payments are frozen for the time being. A few resourceful new Munchies have figured out a work-around where you can join as a free member and upgrade from there to a paid account which charges you for one month and unlocks the back catalog behind the respective tier of the paywall. After that first payment, you won't be charged again until we're dropping new content (which we'll warn everyone is coming), so if you want more of this it can be had, along with access to the fully uncut episodes from 100 to present and Movie Club episodes. When proceedings kick off with a pooch gleefully dragging discarded afterbirth down the sidewalk, you know you're in for something special. “Taboo” (S7E14) delivers on that opening promise, proffering some of the wildest, most disgusting things seen in the Munchie annals. As Adam and Josh frolic through the filth, they talk pseudocyesis, the history of Bellevue, bus fight Twitter, and the epidemic of incest in the U.S. And speaking of incest, wow, does this installment of SVU find a way to make something already SUPER disturbing mindblowingly revolting. This episode is so nuts, you'll feel the Unit needs to interview you afterwards. Dr. Tara B. M. Smith is an early career interdisciplinary academic that works in the fields of science fiction, literature, religion and popular culture. Tara is currently a research affiliate at the University of Sydney. In 2024 Tara was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for the Study of World Religions at the Harvard Divinity School, Boston, writing on religious ideas and experiences of people that paint and play within the science fiction “grimdark” universe of Warhammer 40,000. Tara is a passionate educator who holds a Graduate Certificate of Higher Education and has taught in academic settings for over 5 years across a variety of units including media studies, religious studies, writing skills and composition. When Tara is not studying, she spends time with her two cats Thomas and Momo and her fiancé Luke in Sydney, Australia. While most people who talk and think about the story of Dune focus on the political and religious aspects of the series [for example, the Bene Geserit with their genetic breeding program and the Kwisatz Haderach, or the Butlerian Jihad -the war against thinking machines = technology and AI], Tara's article, “The Anthropocene in Frank Herbert's Dune Series” from 2021 takes a different approach and explores the ecological/philosophical aspects of the story. As she notes, Frank Herbert was warning his readers about their anthropocentric tendencies and urging people instead to think about ecological conservation, or at least he appears to be planting a seed in the minds of the readers to be more aware of their place or role on the Earth.Poem mentioned in this interview:“I drove my feet through a desertWhose mirage fluttered like a host.Voracious for glory, greedy for danger,I roamed the horizons of al-Kulab,Watching time level mountainsIn its search and its hunger for me.And I saw the sparrows swiftly approach,Bolder than the onrushing wolf. They spread in the tree of my youth.I heard the flock in my branchesAnd was caught on their beaks and claws!”– from Arrakis Awakening by the Princess Irulan (Herbert 1978, 228)Dr. Tara Smith:https://www.linkedin.com/in/tara-b-m-smith-phd-fhea-306418192/“The Anthropocene in Frank Herbert's Dune Series”, Foundation 140, 50.3 (2021): 62-74. Zebra mussels are some of the most high profile and impactful invasive species in Canada, and have transformed the Great Lakes watershed in the past three decades. Voracious feeders that consume all algae, they have clarified our lakes, caked our beaches with their sharp shells, and denied other species precious food. Interactions between zebra mussels and algal blooms, another notorious nuisance, are largely unknown. My research uses environmental DNA, an emerging technology, to examine what factors make an ecosystem resilient to zebra mussel invasion, how native mollusk communities react to zebra mussels, and if they help or hinder algal blooms. For upcoming interviews check out the Grad Chat webpage on Queen’s University School of Graduate Studies & Postdoctoral Affairs website.

Fairy Prion - The fairy prion tītī wainui is a small blue seabird that once bred all around the coastline of mainland Aotearoa. Voracious introduced predators forced fairy prion colonies onto offshore islands – but one mainland population clings to survival on steep cliffs near Ōtepoti Dunedin, where Forest and Bird carries out predator control to protect these precious birds. Dunedin Wildlife Hospital's Jordana Whyte is joined by Graeme Loh, who runs the Friends of the Prion fence project up on the St Clair cliffs. Smallmouth bass can be found in rivers throughout Oregon. The fish is an invasive species and has a big appetite for salmon smolt. Smallmouth bass have been disturbing ecosystems and compete with other species for food and habitat. The Native Fish Society will host two events on Saturday to raise awareness about the problem. The “bass bashes” will happen on the Molalla River and the Umpqua River. Attendees are encouraged to catch as many smallmouth bass as they can, and the event includes a cookout full of the freshly caught fish. Kirk Blaine and Liz Perkin are the southern and northern Oregon coordinators, respectively, of the Native Fish Society. They join us with more details about the smallmouth bass and the events.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 24, 2024 is: voracious vuh-RAY-shus adjective Voracious describes someone who has a huge appetite. It can also be used figuratively to mean "excessively eager," as in "a voracious reader." // It seemed like the voracious kitten was eating her weight in food every day. // She has her voracious appetite for knowledge to thank for graduating at the top of her class. See the entry > Examples: "Cane toads are unwelcome in Australia because the bulbous amphibian is a voracious eater that when stressed releases a toxin strong enough to kill lizards, snakes, crocodiles—almost anything that dares to attack it. In a suburban setting, that includes dogs and cats." — Hilary Whiteman, CNN, 19 Jan. 2024 Did you know? Voracious is one of several English words that come from the Latin verb vorare, which means "to eat greedily" or "to devour." Vorare is also an ancestor of devour and of the -ivorous words that describe the diets of various creatures. These include carnivorous ("meat-eating"), herbivorous ("plant-eating"), omnivorous ("feeding on both animals and plants"), frugivorous ("fruit-eating"), graminivorous ("feeding on grass"), and piscivorous ("fish-eating").
Do you want to attract more money into your life? In this episode of the Happy Hustle Podcast, we're diving deep into a concept that might be the missing piece in your pursuit of financial abundance, and that is voracious volume. I know the term "voracious volume" might sound a bit intense, but bear with me because it holds the key to unlocking greater financial success. Let's break it down. Voracious, meaning having a huge appetite, ravenous, excessively eager, insatiable. And volume refers to the amount of space that a substance or object occupies, like an enclosed container of great quantity. So, we're essentially talking about having a ravenous appetite for a large quantity of opportunities to attract abundance. Now, let me share a personal story to illustrate this concept. Back in my prime, I was a professional model and actor. I used to go on three, four, or sometimes even five castings per day. Why? Because I was hungry for success, eager to earn more money, and willing to put in the work. In three months, I booked three high-paying SAG national commercials – Jeep, Corona Light, and Home Depot – earning over $60,000 for technically only three working days. But here's the catch – it took me dozens of castings to secure those gigs. Just like in baseball, if you want to hit more home runs, you need more at-bats. The same principle applies to making money. If you want to increase your income, you need to put in more reps of the things that have brought you success in the past. It's a numbers game, my friend. The key is to scale up – increase your volume. It's all about being relentless in your pursuit of success. Cold outreach, referrals, affiliates, paid traffic – these are sources that can grow your business, but you need that voracious volume. Don't think you're above it, and don't be afraid of rejection. It's part of the game. So, my friend, if you want to attract abundance and if you're aiming for creative, time, and financial freedom, embrace voracious volume. Double up on what you're doing, put in the reps, and you'll reap the rewards. It's time to Happy Hustle with that voracious volume.Connect with Cary!https://www.instagram.com/cary__jack/https://www.facebook.com/SirCaryJackhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/cary-jack-kendzior/https://twitter.com/thehappyhustlehttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFDNsD59tLxv2JfEuSsNMOQ/featured Get a copy of his new book, The Happy Hustle, 10 Alignments to Avoid Burnout & Achieve Blissful Balance (https://www.thehappyhustle.com/book)Sign up for The Journey: 10 Days To Become a Happy Hustler Online Course (https://thehappyhustle.com/thejourney/)Apply to the Montana Mastermind Epic Camping Adventure (https://thehappyhustle.com/mastermind/)“It's time to Happy Hustle, a blissfully balanced life you love, full of passion, purpose, and positive impact!” Episode sponsor BIOptimizers Magnesium Breakthrough (https://magbreakthrough.com/vip?gl=65132c943f5d60f00f8b4567&coupon=hustle)This stuff is a game-changer! This week we are entering virtual reality to kick some virtual ass while we discuss “First Person Shooter”. Note the lack of an exclamation mark. We're ready to be true haters this week. We talk how the term “male gaze” was probably invented to describe this episode, puzzle over the Venn diagram of Euro-goons and cyber trash, advocate for Gillian Anderson getting a big spray bottle for the rest of the crew this time, how this episode wants to be “Basic Instinct” so bad, how unsettling (in a bad way) it is to watch a bunch of grown men salivating over women like this, and how this episode shockingly passes the Bechdel test. We leave room for levity as we clown on Mulder's little gaming outfit, wonder if Chris Carter was mad at David Duchovny and that's why the episode is like this, discover they had to shock David Duchovny to put on the suit, and just shake our heads at how out of character everyone is. But the one thing we did learn from this episode that we can all take with us: Scully with a big gun IS feminism. In this episode we head across the border one more time for a consideration of the Border Trilogy as a whole. How does knowing how the story begins and ends change how we read any of the different parts? My guests on this filibuster over the border include Dr. Nell Sullivan, a Kentuckian who earned her BA in English from Vanderbilt University and earned her PhD from Rice University. She is currently Professor of English at University of Houston-Downtown, where she teaches courses in American literature and the literature of the American South. A former editor of the Cormac McCarthy Journal, she has published extensively on gender and class representation in McCarthy's novels, and has also published essays on Katherine Dunn, William Faulkner, and Nella Larsen, among others. Her work has appeared in numerous essay collections and in such journals as Genre, Critique, The Southern Quarterly, Mississippi Quarterly, and African American Review. She's joined by long time contributor Dr. Stephen Frye. Steve Frye is professor and chair of English at California State University, Bakersfield and President of the Cormac McCarthy Society. He is the author of Understanding Cormac McCarthy (Univ. of South Carolina Press) and editor of The Cambridge Companion to Cormac McCarthy, and Cambridge UP's Cormac McCarthy in Context. He has written numerous journal articles on Cormac McCarthy and other authors of the American Romanticist Tradition. Additionally, he is the author of the novel Dogwood Crossing and the book, Unguessed Kinships: Naturalism and the Geography of Hope in Cormac McCarthy, University of Alabama Press. Bringing in a breath of non-academic fresh air is Marty Priola. Voracious reader, a sometime critic, and book collector, Marty attended the Christian Brothers University of Memphis, the Publishing Institute at the University of Denver, and earned his J.D. at the University of Memphis. Marty's website for McCarthy appreciation became the first website and a foundational part of the formation of the Cormac McCarthy Society, and he still maintains the Cormac McCarthy webpages and forums. He has written two entries on McCarthy for the Dictionary of Literary Biography. His writing is also featured in exchanges with Peter Josyph in Cormac Mccarthy's House: Reading Mccarthy Without Walls and The Wrong Reader's Guide to Cormac Mccarthy: All The Pretty Horses, which he edited and published in its first (ebook) form. As always, listeners should beware: there be spoilers here. Thanks to Thomas Frye, who composed, performed, and produced the music for READING MCCARTHY. America's fascination with high-profile criminal cases can be attributed to several factors:Media Coverage: High-profile criminal cases often receive extensive media attention, including 24/7 news coverage, documentaries, and true crime podcasts. This saturation of information piques the public's interest and keeps them engaged throughout the legal proceedings.Morbid Curiosity: Humans have a natural inclination toward morbid curiosity, and high-profile criminal cases provide a glimpse into the darker aspects of human behavior. People are drawn to the details of heinous crimes, trying to understand the motivations behind them.Escapism: High-profile cases offer a form of escapism from the mundane aspects of daily life. They provide a gripping narrative that allows people to temporarily immerse themselves in a different world, where justice is at stake.Legal Drama: The courtroom setting, with its complex legal arguments, witnesses, and cross-examinations, resembles a real-life drama. It appeals to those interested in law and justice, as they follow the legal strategies and debates that unfold during the trial.Social Commentary: High-profile criminal cases often touch upon broader social issues, such as race, class, gender, and privilege. These cases become focal points for discussions about systemic problems within the criminal justice system.Celebrity Involvement: When celebrities are involved in criminal cases, the public's fascination intensifies. The intersection of fame, fortune, and legal trouble generates significant media attention and public interest.Voyeurism: Some people are simply drawn to the voyeuristic aspect of high-profile cases, wanting to peek into the private lives of those involved, especially if the individuals were once admired or respected.Sense of Justice: Many people are emotionally invested in seeing justice served. They follow these cases closely, hoping for a fair and just outcome, whether it's the conviction of a guilty party or the exoneration of an innocent one.Psychological Intrigue: High-profile cases often involve complex psychological elements, including motives, mental health issues, and the behavior of both the accused and the victims. These psychological aspects captivate those interested in the human mind.Legal Precedent: Some high-profile cases set legal precedents that can shape the justice system for years to come. Legal scholars and professionals closely follow these cases to understand their potential impact on future rulings. In this episode, we take a look at Bryan Kohberger's trial in comparison with some of the other high profile cases that we have seen play out live on our TVs.(commercial at 8:30 )to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Bryan Kohberger trial: Battle over cameras in court as Americans consume televised trials at record rates | Fox NewsThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5080327/advertisement

Ep #173 - In this conversation, we'll discuss the role of the ego and the unconscious mind in our day-to-day lives. The ego is responsible for our sense of self and how we interact with the world around us. When our ego is healthy, we have a strong sense of self-esteem and confidence, which can help us pursue our goals and handle setbacks. However, an unbalanced ego can lead to negative consequences such as arrogance, low self-esteem, or anxiety. The unconscious mind, on the other hand, plays a critical role in shaping our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. It's the part of our mind that operates below the level of conscious awareness, and it's responsible for our deepest desires, fears, and motivations. While the ego operates in the conscious realm, the unconscious mind can influence our behavior in subtle and powerful ways. To cultivate a healthy sense of self and balance our ego, it's important to also examine the unconscious mind and address any underlying issues or conflicts that may be contributing to imbalances in our ego. This can involve exploring our past experiences, beliefs, and behaviors to gain insight into our unconscious motivations and how they may be influencing our current thoughts and actions. By integrating these two aspects of our psyche, we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and enjoy a more fulfilling and satisfying life. ************************************************ Just hit play and let's dive in with our open minds, hearts, and energies bringing everyone into the fold - you are in the right place, at the right time...right now. EPISODE 1349: In this KEEN ON show, Andrew talks to AI BATTLE ROYALE author Ashley Marc Recanati about how to protect your job from the disruption of the 4th Industrial Revolution of smart machines Over the past twenty years, Ashley Recanati has lived and worked in the three powerhouses that are Europe, the U.S. and China, rising from odd jobs to general management through financial control, thanks in part to the continuous learning and implementation of automation tools. Meanwhile he developed a keen awareness of the contrast between the latest evolving technologies and actual working habitats in offices, factories, and retail. Despite the broad consensus among experts on the dire effects that new tech will have on employees, a blatant gap persists in terms of advice as to how they can prepare for the disruption. His 2023 book, AI Battle Royale, is the fruit of research conducted over five years to remedy this gap. Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The National Institute of Health recently announced its plan to retire the fifty remaining chimpanzees held in national research facilities and place them in sanctuaries. This significant decision comes after a lengthy process of examination and debate about the ethics of animal research. For decades, proponents of such research have argued that the discoveries and benefits for humans far outweigh the costs of the traumatic effects on the animals; but today, even the researchers themselves have come to question the practice. John P. Gluck has been one of the scientists at the forefront of the movement to end research on primates, and in Voracious Science and Vulnerable Animals: A Primate Scientist's Ethical Journey (U Chicago Press, 2016) he tells a vivid, heart-rending, personal story of how he became a vocal activist for animal protection. Gluck begins by taking us inside the laboratory of Harry F. Harlow at the University of Wisconsin, where Gluck worked as a graduate student in the 1960s. Harlow's primate lab became famous for his behavioral experiments in maternal deprivation and social isolation of rhesus macaques. Though trained as a behavioral scientist, Gluck finds himself unable to overlook the intense psychological and physical damage these experiments wrought on the macaques. Gluck's sobering and moving account reveals how in this and other labs, including his own, he came to grapple with the uncomfortable justifications that many researchers were offering for their work. As his sense of conflict grows, we're right alongside him, developing a deep empathy for the often smart and always vulnerable animals used for these experiments. At a time of unprecedented recognition of the intellectual cognition and emotional intelligence of animals, Voracious Science and Vulnerable Animals is a powerful appeal for our respect and compassion for those creatures who have unwillingly dedicated their lives to science. Through the words of someone who has inflicted pain in the name of science and come to abhor it, it's important to know what has led this far to progress and where further inroads in animal research ethics are needed. John P. Gluck is professor emeritus of psychology and a senior advisor to the president on animal research ethics and welfare at the University of New Mexico. He is also research professor of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University and coauthor of The Human Use of Animals. Callie Smith is a poet and doctoral candidate in English at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Learn more about your ad choices.
