Mike returns for the conclusion of his 1982 Oregon campground encounter, picking up with two sets of reflective eyes watching him from the darkness near a picnic table. At first, he assumes he is dealing with deer, wolves, or some other familiar animal and repeatedly tries to scare them away.But as his flashlight begins to fade and he moves closer, the shapes refuse to behave like anything he recognizes.Standing only twelve to fourteen feet away, Mike watches one figure rise to an estimated height of more than eight feet. Moments later, he notices an even larger presence beside a tree, with its eyes appearing nearly eleven feet above the ground. He searches for antlers, ears, a muzzle, or any other feature that might explain what he is seeing, but nothing fits. Instead of running, Mike talks to the figures, throws rocks, sings “Kumbaya,” and eventually holds out an apple into the darkness. Something large and covered in hair gently takes it from his hand.The next morning, Mike measures the surrounding trees and branches to confirm the heights he witnessed. Even then, he does not immediately call the creatures Bigfoot. Mike's 1982 Oregon Bigfoot Encounter: Part 1In this episode, Brian welcomes Mike from New York for the first part of a terrifying encounter that has stayed with him for more than forty years. Mike begins by explaining how the Patterson-Gimlin film first sparked his interest in Bigfoot before taking us back to 1982, when he was traveling alone through Oregon on his way toward Crater Lake.After following a rough Forest Service road deep into the woods, Mike discovers two freshly fallen trees blocking the only way forward. Overcome by an intense and unexplainable sense of fear, he spends nearly ninety minutes cutting through roots and branches to clear a path.He eventually reaches an isolated, long-neglected campsite, where he sets up his tent, builds a fire, and settles in for the night.Another family later arrives nearby, lighting a massive bonfire and openly carrying a revolver. Not long after dark, something Mike assumes is a bear begins sniffing around his tent. When it presses close, he punches it through the fabric.Then the vocalizations begin.Soft, whispered “moo moo” sounds drift through the darkness and are answered by strange “bloop bloop” calls from another direction. The exchanges grow louder and more aggressive, followed by rock clacking and a powerful whoop so intense that Mike feels it strike his chest and cause the walls of his tent to billow inward. When Mike finally shouts into the darkness, everything goes silent. Moments later, the sounds begin again.Heavy footsteps approach the tent as though something is challenging him to come outside, forcing Mike to abandon camp and run for his car. This is it, the finale of the Sasquatch Unleashed audiobook, and it opens with something that isn't in the book at all. I wrote Sasquatch Unleashed as a lifelong skeptic who had never once seen the creature with his own eyes.Then, in the summer of 2024, that changed. Over the span of two days I saw them three separate times in broad daylight, and on one of those occasions I stood no more than 10 feet away from one of these creatures. So the man reading you this final part is not the same man who wrote it, and for me the question at the heart of this whole book is settled in a way it never was on the page.From there, I take on the hardest questions this subject has to offer.If Sasquatch is real, then where are the bodies, and why has no one ever stumbled across the bones? I walk you through the fossil record, the brutal science of what it actually takes to make a fossil, and why the remains of a large forest primate are exactly what we would expect to be missing. I get into how something that big could stay hidden at all, drawing on the primate behaviors and the lowland gorilla that eluded science for centuries, and I look at what human population growth and the loss of wild land mean for a creature trying to stay out of sight.Then I put on the old hat I wore for 16 years in law enforcement, and I put Sasquatch on trial. I lay out the kinds of evidence a courtroom actually accepts, from physical and documentary to testimonial and digital, and I ask whether the case would hold up in front of a jury. In this episode, Brian welcomes Steve from the UK to share the unsettling roadside encounter he experienced near Hibaldstow, North Lincolnshire, in July 1994.While driving home after a night of DJ work, Steve watched a heavily built, hair-covered creature—standing roughly six and a half feet tall—cross directly in front of his car before disappearing into the roadside brush.The creature moved with remarkable speed and an unusually smooth, fluid gait. As it passed through the headlights, Steve noticed straw or dried grass tangled in its matted hair and caught a brief profile of a pale gray or white face with an almost glossy appearance. Tonight we're pulling off the road and opening the mailbag. Over the past few months the inbox has been filling up with encounter stories, and when I sat down to sort through them, one thing stood out: over and over again, they were coming from hunters.That makes sense when you think about it. Hunters are in the woods before dawn and after dark, sitting still in country most people never see, and they know exactly what belongs in the timber and what doesn't.In this episode I've got six of those stories, from six different men, in six different states, across six different decades. We start in western Montana in nineteen sixty-eight, where two elk hunters packed seven miles into a basin that something had already emptied.From there it's the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas in nineteen seventy-seven, where a young deer hunter learned why the old-timers on his uncle's lease quietly hunted around forty acres of the best ground on the place. Then we go back to the oldest account in the bag, a logger on the west slope of the Washington Cascades in nineteen fifty-four, four years before America even had the word Bigfoot. After that it's Michigan's Upper Peninsula in nineteen eighty-nine, where a bear hunter's bait station started getting cleaned out by something that didn't leave bear tracks. Then down to a Georgia river bottom in nineteen ninety-six, where two cousins hunting hogs at night followed a hole in the frog sound and found out what had moved the hogs. And we close in the Colorado high country in two thousand eight, with a skeptic of an archery elk hunter, a wrong-sounding bugle in the dark, and a line of sixteen-inch tracks through an elk wallow.Six men, most of whom never planned on telling anybody. In this episode, Fred shares two unsettling accounts of suspected “hairy man” encounters from the remote Alaskan wilderness.The first involves Don and Tina, a couple hired to operate a gold mine along the Koyukuk River. During a stretch of heavy rain, large rocks began slamming into their loud mining equipment from somewhere beyond the tree line. Don briefly chased a dark figure into the woods, while Tina later witnessed an enormous humanoid silhouette moving nearby.The situation escalated the following morning when the figure appeared dangerously close to their camp. Tina fired a shotgun into the air, and the couple retreated to their cabin before seeking help from a neighboring miner. He revealed that he had experienced similar harassment in the area. Despite the mine producing good gold, Don and Tina decided the money was not worth the risk and quit. Fortunately, the owner treated them fairly and paid them for their work.Fred then rshares Daniel's experience while trout fishing along the Tickchik River roughly twenty-five years ago. While waiting near a thick stand of willows, Daniel became overwhelmed by the feeling that something was watching him. After firing warning shots, he spotted a tall, black humanoid silhouette standing near the brush. Brian welcomes Mary Ann and Levi back to the show, and Mary Ann's husband, Robert, joins us for his first ever appearance on any podcast.In this episode, Brian sits down with BFRO expedition leader Mary Ann, her husband Robert, and investigator Levi to talk about a spring expedition on private property in northern Missouri.Mary Ann shares more about her work leading BFRO expeditions across Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and soon Illinois, while the group walks through a weekend that began with knocks, shadow reports, and possible footsteps before escalating into something far more intense.One participant using thermal equipment believed she saw tall heat signatures near a pond and ravine area, later estimated to be between six and a half and seven feet tall.As the weekend continued, strange activity seemed to build around camp. Then, during a severe storm on Saturday night, Mary Ann and Robert experienced repeated impacts against their tent, including something pushing against the phone pocket and swiping across the front of the tent. At the same time, Levi was watching from his rooftop tent and saw a large outline near the barn blocking reflected light.
