Elly took a really big risk… in an industry where people don’t look like her.It is a common ambition to want to transform one’s hobby into a fully-fledged career. Despite this, few people have succeeded in acquiring this goal quite like Elly Hart. A native of Sydney, Australia, Elly moved to Vancouver in 2012. As someone who was in the midst of pursuing a degree in communications, she worked as a journalist and editor. Even though she had been successful in finding a career in her field of study, she couldn’t help but feel as though something was missing. She decided that it was time to pursue something that she had enjoyed doing for some time: working with her hands. As a side hobby, one of Elly’s favourite activities revolved around crafting wooden furniture and toys from scratch. Understanding that a Carpentry apprenticeship would allow her practice similar activities in the working world, she put aside her editing job in order to start the Carpentry Foundations program at BCIT. Since then, she hasn’t looked back. Elly is proud of the work that she does today, and especially loves the fact that her job teaches her to be adaptable and an adept problem solver- transferrable skills that are useful outside the workplace. Needless to say, her hobby has become her life, and the future looks bright.Elly keeps a photo journal of her apprenticeship and job-site experience on Instagram.Instagram: @ellytheapprentice
