Home organization and decluttering are on trend, but if we limit declutter to aesthetics, then we miss the more meaningful, mental and psychological benefits of it. I stumbled upon Brittani's instagram page, Pinch of Help, around 2017 or 2018 and I have been hooked on her skills ever since. Her organizational skills are unmatched, so I had to invite her on the show. Brittani is a Professional Home Organizer, CEO and founder of Pinch of Help-Home Organization based in Atlanta, GA. Brittani is very passionate about creating environments her clients love living in by using her expert ability to match functional organization with aesthetically pleasing solutions. She is a loving mother of two children, and puppy Chloe, and is the wife to husband Chris, who joined the Pinch of Help Team in 2018 as lead organizer and CBO. TwoSistas welcomed to today's podcast on this TriumphTuesday, February 21, 2023, Louise Hopkin. Louise is a Professional Home Organizer creating offerings that are unique and work! Louise loves to look at the holistic organizing of how you can create space in yourself and your home so you can find the peace and harmony you crave. It goes way beyond the clutter and starts with our mindset. How do we organize our thoughts on Mindset? As Louise stated, Mindset is the first step that is often missed. Why does it keep coming back? Louise shared the Top 6 Reasons Why We Collect Clutter [she went into great detail with each reason]: Retail Therapy Emotions Assigned Time Sentimental Overwhelm No Can't Say It Clutter also affects our physical health as well. The mental struggles for many are just that - overwhelming struggles and the blocks that occur from keeping someone from decluttering! It often stems back to perhaps a traumatic or very emotional event that has occurred in their lives. There is also a lot of fear associated with “clutter” - the fear of “what if” - Louise waked us through different scenarios with some of her clients and how to gently peel back the layers. It's a very complicated and emotional process. We chatted about the TV show “hoarders” - how can this happen? Very traumatic for not only the person who is hoarding but for their family as well. It's very hard for family members but for their loved ones as well. The emotions come straight to the forefront. Louise suggested starting with the easy things first, whatever that might be to you. It's really the beginning of a journey of self-love, self-discovery; and unapologetic confidence! To learn more about Louise and services and to connect with her further, please check out her website and other social media platforms: info@thespacereclaimers.ca https://www.thespacereclaimers.ca/ https://www.instagram.com/thespacereclaimers/ https://www.facebook.com/Thespacereclaimers https://www.linkedin.com/in/louise-hopkin-organizer-declutter-coach-speaker/ Question of the Day: Do you believe making your bed each day sets you up for success? Thank you Louise - we can't wait to have you back on the TwoSistas podcast! Let us know what you thought of today's episode. Today in the guest chair we welcome Brittani Allen, a Professional Home Organizer, and CEO and Founder of Pinch of Help-Home Organization based in Atlanta, Georgia. I came across Brittani’s business on Instagram and was instantly hooked! She is passionate about creating environments her clients love living in, with her expert ability to match functional organization with aesthetically pleasing solutions. The entrepreneur bug hit her while she was studying biomedical science in graduate school and substituting teaching. It was an overheard conversation between high school students that sparked the idea for her first business, Strategic Academic Planning. She eventually pivoted to blogging but was still feeling stuck until she read the book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing. Would you believe that Brittani used to struggle with keeping her house clean and organized? She used the processes and tips from the book to declutter her home, and friends started to take notice. As she continued to help friends and family, she realized she could turn her side hustle into a profitable full-time business. For me, the most daunting part about moving is always the purging of the old and the organization of the new. Sometimes it just makes me want to take a nap and forget about the mess! Luckily, I stumbled across NEAT Method Vancouver (@vancouverneat), a luxury home organizing company, franchised by a lovely woman named Sarah, to lend a big helping hand.
Believe it or not, even though I am a Professional Home Organizer, my house is not always PERFECTLY organized. While I can confidently say that everything has a logical home, and most things are in their homes, I have to admit that there are many areas of my home that need updating. Organizing is a process. It takes time. And it's ongoing. On today's episode I explain exactly how I am taking inventory and updating my entire house by going back to the basics of home organizing. There are many, many ways you can get visibility for yourself and your business: Speaking to local groups Presenting at conferences Being a member or officer of a local organization Guesting on podcasts or hosting your own podcast Doing Facebook Live and YouTube videos Hosting webinars Being active in Facebook groups and other online communities But, you can’t do all of these at the same time. You have to choose which are the best ones based on where you’re at in your business, where your target audience is, and what’s going to be the most effective. Have you ever thought, “There's gotta be more to life than this.” There's gotta be more to life than just working and getting that next paycheck. There's gotta be more to life than just grinding your days away for the benefit of someone else. There's gotta be more to life than just sticking through and doing all of these mundane routines. If you have, then you are correct. There really is more to life than just that. We believe that EVERYONE HAS A CALLING, a purpose, and we want you to believe in your purpose too! YOU can change your fate. YOU decide what to do. Open yourself up to all the amazing possibilities because without knowing and understanding these possibilities, you can't act on them. When you do not act, you stay stuck where you are, always wondering what “more” feels like. Find the courage to put yourself out there, follow that tug towards your life's purpose, towards something amazing -- something only YOU can do BECAUSE you are your own person, and no one else can ever be YOU. Whether it be to create, to fix, to teach, to lead, or to listen… We are ALL here to make a difference in the world, and that won't happen unless you break free from your hesitations, the doubts, and the fears. To help you find the inspiration to take your next step is an amazing woman who has gone through and has overcome so many struggles in order to pursue and act on her possibilities. Joining us today is Flip Your Life community member, Wendy Zanders. [Tweet "“We have got to do something different in order to start living a life of purpose.” - Wendy"] Wendy is the wearer of many, many hats. She is a wife, mother, Ex-Unit Supply Specialist and Unit Armorer in the United States Army, Executive Assistant and Project Manager, who was diagnosed with ADD in her mid-thirties after recognizing some of the symptoms from her son's ADHD assessment form. From an outsider's perspective, this highly driven, bubbly and resilient individual, is living what most people would call "a good life". But after an unexpected loss in the family, she fell into a deep depression and all of a sudden everything became a blur. It took a while for her to recognize the symptoms, but she knew something was off. She knew she needed help, so she sought it. The healing process wasn't easy, the battle felt long and hard, but she did it. Nothing is going to hold her down, nothing will dim her light. Wendy wanted to get her life back on track, she made a choice to do everything to make that happen. Things started to fall into place, she learned so many things, and she eventually found her calling as a Professional Home Organizer, and this was how FunctionalOrganizingwithWendy.com was born. Her mission is to share her functional organizing strategies with professional women struggling with ADD, depression, and anxiety so they can enjoy being with their family, love their homes and their careers -- helping them collect memories and not things. Her online business journey has just begun, so we'll be helping her take her online business to the next level by sharing our insight on how to beat imposter syndrome, and how she can confidently embody her brand. Recently I received a message from one of our listeners. Jaime from Texas has considered hiring a Professional Home Organizer down where she lives and had a handful of questions about what it would be like. There was one in particular that I wanted to share with you. In the past I've had a handful of other people ask the same question, "Do I have to be there for the organizing session, or can they do it without me?" My response is always, yes... you FOR SURE need to be there for the consultation. On this episode I explain exactly why. I have been a Professional Home Organizer in the Seattle area for over 15 years now, and like I’ve said in previous episodes, I have seen it all! No organizing project is too big or crazy for me. My key to success is to always have in mind the fact that everyone is different. Everyone has different personalities, quirks, interests, tastes, hobbies, values, priorities, and so on. And when it comes to organizing someone’s home or helping them with time management I’ve learned that what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another. More often than not, when I pull a strategy from my huge arsenal, I have to custom fit all the different tips and techniques for each individual client. But, there are a number of tried and true organizing tactics that consistently work with most people. One of those is what I call the Category Game. In general, when it comes to organizing your home, in a lot of ways you’re playing one big category game. Everything you own falls into a particular category and within each category are sub-categories… and then sub-categories of sub-categories. Each category in your home should be assigned a home, so that you can find the items when your need them. But sometimes, when I’m helping a client organize their home, we come across a few very random items that don’t seem to fall into any specific category. When you’re sorting, purging, and organizing all your stuff, what do you do with some of those very random items that don’t seem to have a home anywhere in your house? When you come across something that doesn’t fit one of the obvious categories, it’s easy to get stuck, frustrated, and overwhelmed. On today’s episode of Life Made Simple I give you a solution for all those little random items that don’t seem to have a specific home. Now I have to say, when we put this topic on the podcast schedule, it was originally going to be about the random little junky things our children have in their rooms. But, the truth is, even as grown-ups those little random items tend float around and clutter up our space as well. So not only do I specifically apply this unique organizing solution to organizing a child’s room, I also tell you how you can apply this solution to your own random stuff lying around. You might have noticed in the title of for today's show it says "CarlaRae Confesses". That's because every month or so on Life Made Simple, we feature a special segment when yours truly admits to an area of my own life where I've fallen short in the whole simplicity department... certain areas of life where even I need a little extra help in. You've probably heard me talk about this before, but long before my days of being a Professional Home Organizer, I was actually a pack rat as a child. I was completely attached to everything I owned! Everything felt special to me and I wanted to keep it all. I'm also a recovering overachiever who used to commit to WAY more than one person could possible handle. And to this day (you can ask my husband) I still sometimes bite off more than I can chew. The fact is, in our crazy busy world it's HARD to simplify. And there's so much psychology behind it all! While I love helping all my client's push past anything holding them back from discovering true simplicity in life, I too am on this journey as well with them. I'm learning how to navigate through all the chaos as well. I too am learning how to focus only on what really matters in my life, which of course means letting go of what doesn't really matter... and that's not always easy. I'm not a perfectionist, I'm not a holy than thou expert. I am a student of my own teachings. We're in this together! Which is why every once in awhile we feature an episode like this one called "CarlaRae Confesses". So what do I confess on today's episode? Well, there is one area of my life that has recently gotten a little out of hand (ok, so actually, to be honest, it's gotten really out of hand). For this past year, I've been guilty of suffering from magazine overload. I have way too many magazines! First, I tell you exactly how I got myself into this dilemma. And the fact is I LOVE reading magazines... which means solving my problem isn't as easy as just tossing them all in the recycle bin. If you also love your magazine subscriptions, then you'll probably appreciate some of the solutions I have for you to help manage the magazines that you do love to collect, read, and keep. But then I also going to give you some very specific ways on how I plan to, not only let go of the majority of my magazine clutter, but exactly how I plan to prevent the problem from happening again. I tell you how I plan on stopping the madness once and for all! Do you know anyone would enjoy listening to the show? Anyone who could use a little motivation and inspiration to simplify their life? Which is why one of my well known motto's is to Have Less. Do Less. And Be More. Unfortunately, for a lot of you, when it comes to simplifying your home, you dread the idea of going through all your stuff and sorting out things that you don't love, use, or need... which is probably why many people avoid the process of de-cluttering all together. The fact is, simplifying your life doesn't always have to be hard and tedious. What if I told you that you can actually have fun letting go of all your stuff? How, you ask? Well... if you want a unique and enjoyable way to get rid of things cluttering up your home, why not have a party? A Swap Party! What do you collect? Coins, baseball cards, antiques, bottle caps, beer cans, comic books, miniatures, postcards, hats, spoons, stamps, thimbles, cookie cutters, teddy bears, frogs, action figures, concert tickets, magnets, or PEZ dispensers… the list goes on and on. Whatever the collection, in my 15 years of being a Professional Home Organizer, I’ve seen it all! Some are very valuable and worth a large chunk of change and other collections are simply for fun or nostalgia. The question is: Where is your collection? Do you keep it buried in a box in the basement? Or, worse, is it piled all over your guest bedroom, master closet, or home office cluttering up your usable space? Either way, how can you really appreciate what you have if it’s buried or becoming a burden? My challenge to you is to find a fun and clever way to display all or a part of your collection. It doesn’t necessarily need to be out for everyone to see. Albums of paper objects can be stored on bookshelves. If your collection is too big, consider exhibiting a few items, storing the rest, and then seasonally rotating. Then again, maybe you’ve decided that you don’t really want those hundreds of beanie babies that you used to love so dearly, or whatever collection you have that you're not as passionate about anymore. Maybe it’s time to consider moving on and letting go. Some collections can be sold or donated. If it’s too hard to get rid of them, only keep a handful of your favorites as a keepsake and let go of the rest. No sense keeping all of them if the collection is not cherished the way it used to be. Remember, when it comes to simplifying your home and your life, you need to focus and hang on to what really matters, and somehow let go of the rest! Know anyone would love listening to the show? As a Professional Home Organizer and lifestyle coach, it is not only my job, but it is my passion to help people make changes in their lives and homes to become happier and healthier. I've always considered myself to be an advocate for change. But, unfortunately, change isn't easy - for any of us - even if it's for the good. In this episode of Life Made Simple - Episode#2 I plan on taking a look at exactly WHY it is so hard to make good changes in our lives. All of us in our lives have something that we wish would be different... something that we wish would be better. We all have bad habits that we wish we could change. It could be something regarding family, like maybe you want to be more patient as a parent or be a better spouse. Or maybe you want to make a change in your home, like get it more organized, keep a cleared off kitchen counter, or keep up with your laundry. Maybe the change you want has something to do with your career. Or even your finances. Maybe you want to stop wasting money and start saving for a down payment. Or maybe the change you want has to do with your health; you want to eat better, exercise more, maybe lose a few pounds. Whatever it is, we all have something in our life that isn't as good as we had hoped for or expected, something that we want to change for the good. If you had the opportunity to make something better in your life, why wouldn't you take it? If you had the control to improve your life in any way, why wouldn't you take the necessary steps to do so? Why? Well, because CHANGE IS HARD. But why is it so hard to make changes in our lives if it helps us to be happier or healthier or more successful? It's because of this simple truth: in order for a person to change, the pain and discomfort of their current situation needs to surpass the perceived discomfort of making the change. Tune in to the full episode to hear exactly what this means and how it applies to you. We also go over the 7 questions you need to ask yourself that can guide you to the path of making a lasting change in your life.
