The color of passion, love, and desire, red also symbolizes strength and confidence. I am all for all the above. I have always been a fan of the color red, and this year, I am adamant about adding more red to my life. In the world of style, I find red to be very flattering in clothes and accessories. A touch of red in my outfit lifts the whole look. Keep it to one or two pieces, not to overwhelm but to accent and cheer up. A shawl, a scarf, a jacket… gives that je ne sais quai that is so important at our age! Red mixes with almost everything - well, except another red!- and there are many combinations besides the classic red, white, and blue. I love it paired with brown; it is super elegant with shocking pink -like Yves Saint Laurent, so fabulously designed- and with purple in a very baroque and, should I say, ecclesiastical combination. Oh, and red and pale pink are an incredibly flattering combination. A red jacket elevates a monochromatic trousers and blouse outfit, and a red scarf adds pizzazz and a touch of daring to a gray flannel suit. Red trousers for day or evening wear are a great basic to pull out when you just don't know what else to wear, and throwing on a red sweater over your jeans is like an exclamation point. (Another thing that I am adding to my New Year's resolution of what not to do: exclamation points, that is!) And on my table, a few objects here and there make my table joyous and happy. Red and white tablecloths, napkins, and even placemats are great accessories that mix with silver, green plates, and white ceramics. Always think of using two primary colors on the table and then accessorize with complementary basics. Rattan, silver, tortoise… I love a simple white table set with a combination of red flowers, and I also love playing with red ceramic fruits and vegetables. It is about balance and harmony. Red is a great accent at home. A touch of something red pops in a room creating interest and, often, a bit of whimsy. The dining room in my house in Palm Beach had lacquered red walls that glowed in candlelight. There is no reason to limit red to the Christmas season! Red is excellent with navy in the Spring, with grey in the fall, and with whites in the summer. Just remember that when you wear red, you must match your lipstick color! Lastly, I also need to mention the color red when it is used as a warning, right? Let's not forget those red flags, those red herrings, and the embarrassment of being caught red-handed. And with this, I leave you.Sincerely, The serial Hostess Thank you for subscribing. Leave a comment or share this episode.

Wahnsinn, was da abgeht. Wer noch einigermassen kreative Schimpf- und Schandeworte sucht, wird ebenso fündig wie geneigte Biologende. Ab in die Hocke und durch den Haneggschuss. Hobbla!

François RecanatiPhilosophie du langage et de l'espritCollège de FranceAnnée 2023-2024Colloque - Indexical Dynamics : Indexical Dynamics and Composite Modes of PresentationColloque organisé par François Recanati, Professeur du Collège de France, chaire Philosophie du langage et de l'espritIntervenant(s)Víctor M. Verdejo, Pompeu Fabra UniversityWith roots in Frege's famous remarks (1956, 296), reflection on Rip van Winkle's fantastic story has played a key role in the philosophical study of indexical dynamics (Kaplan 1989, Perry 1997, Branquinho 2008, Ludlow 2019). Consider now the Reverse van Winkle case: Rip van Winkle falls asleep at time t and, while he feels like it's been a very long slumber, only a few seconds have actually passed when he wakes up at time t'. Suppose Rip van Winkle utters "Today is fine" both at t and t' but, while he fully accepts the associated thought at t, he hesitates at t'. The Reverse van Winkle case shows that, if we accept the 'Intuitive Criterion of Difference' (Evans 1982), a particular understanding of the relation between indexicality and thought is wrongheaded. According to this 'linguistic' view, indexicality is a property of linguistic terms only and these terms express thoughts relative to a particular context. If this view were correct, sameness of context of utterance, indexical expression and reference should guarantee sameness of thought. However, the target case shows that the same (day-based) indexical term – "today" – and the same relevant context to refer to the same day may involve conflicting rational attitudes, and hence different thoughts. The case can be raised even if one doesn't accept (contra Perry 1997: 35-38 or Ludlow 2019: 72-75) that the first "today"-thought at t is remembered at t'. One only requires that Rip, at t', doesn't change his mind with respect to the thought expressed at t (cf. Kaplan 1989: 537-538). We should not however haste to embrace the view that indexicality is an essential aspect of thought. If this were so, it should be possible for thoughts to be indexically individuated. Yet sometimes, as the (Reverse) van Winkle case illustrates, thoughts expressed with (same or different) indexicals change with contexts and sometimes they don't. What should be done? To analyse the target case, I will invoke a "composite mode of presentation", i.e. "a mode of presentation that, although 'static', i.e. deployed at a given time in thinking of the object, rests on distinct simultaneous relations to the object, and on distinct ways of gaining information (distinct information channels) based on these relations" (Recanati, forthcoming; see also Dickie & Rattan 2010, Recanati 2016). Thus, in the Reverse van Winkle scenario, at t', Rip takes recourse to two different modes of presentation (MOPs) of a particular day, one based on memory or awareness of it before falling asleep, and one based on his direct awareness of the day in question. While one would typically merge these MOPs into one composite MOP to think and reason, indexically, about a day, Rip van Winkle fails to do so because of his especial predicament. Rip van Winkle has different thoughts, based on different MOPs. But these MOPs would typically constitute one and the same composite MOP in normal circumstances. More needs to be said, however, to fully characterize the cases in which composite MOPs based on different primitive MOPs of a referent are indeed available. My proposal is that this happens when the thinker is aware of the co-referentiality of primitive MOPs. Such awareness – which can be spelled out in a number of ways – may link very different indexical and demonstrative MOPs (perceptual, testimonial, memory-based...). However, composite MOPs need not be restricted to thought expressible with indexicals or demonstratives, and may carry over to any co-referential singular and general terms. This suggests a view in which the MOPs associated with indexicals are correctly attributed to the thought itself, but where such MOPs are not so different from conventional, non-indexical MOPs. Finally, while the awareness of co-reference signals the presence of a composite MOP, there is a sense in which composite MOPs may be acknowledged whether or not a thinker – such as Rip van Winkel – is aware of the co-referentiality of their constituent MOPs. This is also the sense in which different subjects unaware of one another may express the very same thought via different utterances of "Today is fine" on the same day.

Direct Peritoneal Resuscitation! We're not just dumping fluids into the open abdomen. What is DPR? Why do it? Who should get it? Does it work? Come try and stay awake for some basic science talk before then learning all about why you should consider adopting DPR into your Trauma/EGS practice? Join Drs. Cobler-Lichter, Kwon, Meizoso, Urréchaga, and Rattan as they guide you through all this and more! Hosts: Michael Cobler-Lichter, MD, PGY2: University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital/Ryder Trauma Center @mdcobler (twitter) Eva Urrechaga, MD, PGY6/R4: University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital/Ryder Trauma Center @urrechisme (twitter) Eugenia Kwon, MD, Trauma/Surgical Critical Care Fellow: University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital/Ryder Trauma Center Jonathan Meizoso, MD, MSPH Assistant Professor of Surgery, 3 years in practice University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital/Ryder Trauma Center @jpmeizoso (twitter) Rishi Rattan, MD, Attending Surgeon in Trauma/Critical Care, 7 years in practice Legacy Emanuel Medical Center @DrRishiRattan (twitter) Learning Objectives: - State the proposed benefits of DPR - Identify who can benefit from DPR - Demonstrate the proper way to set up a DPR circuit - Discuss the proposed basic science mechanism for DPR's efficacy Quick Hits: 1. Consider DPR in all your open abdomens in EGS/Trauma. You never know when you're going to be able to close some of these patients. 2. The principal of DPR is to allow the fluid to dwell in the abdomen as long as possible. Keep the catheter deep and don't put holes in your dressing. 3. DPR is ideal for patients with packing, who are in discontinuity, and for fresh anastomoses. These will only benefit from DPR, not be harmed by it. 4. Make sure these patients are receiving hourly I/Os. Nursing by-in is huge for this procedure. 5. DPR is associated with higher rates of fascial closure, reduces inflammation, and improves blood flow to the abdomen. Known as the last great rattan dealer, Harvey Schwartz is getting ready to relaunch his infamous rattan company, Tropical Sun. So why is Harvey the last great rattan dealer? Well, at 80 years old he's still running the show and grabbing up all the great rattan known, even if it means going to a swap meet at 5am. To say he loves this stuff is an understatement. His collection spans over 2500pcs, and the best part? It's all for sale. Harvey actually started as an aerospace engineer which has surprisingly helped him in his rattan business more than you would think. To operate or not to operate, to drain the urine leak or to not drain it, those are the questions. Join our Miami Trauma team including Drs. Urréchaga, Neeman, and Rattan- in their final episode together! - as they discuss how to navigate the ins and outs of renal trauma! Learning Objectives: · Define the different renal injury grades and how to manage each, · Identify when to take the renal trauma patient to the operating room, · Discuss when to involve IR for urinary drainage or embolization. · Explain when and how to perform a nephrectomy. · Debate the treatment of penetrating zone two injuries- to explore or not explore? Quick Hits: 1. Most kidney injuries, the vast majority, can be non-operatively managed. 2. For pretty much all AAST grade of injury, the choice to go to the OR immediately lies in whether the patient is stable or unstable. 3. If there is a urinary leak seen on imaging, it can usually just be observed and followed with repeat imaging to determine the need for drainage, unless the injury is significant or if there is injury to the renal pelvis- then the patient will usually need a drainage procedure. 4. Consider IR in any stable patient found to have active extravasation, fistula, or pseudoaneurysm. 5. In the case of an unstable patient, except very rare circumstances, you should be going to the OR 6. If there is another cause of instability, address that first. If you're opening Gerota's fascia, be prepared to commit to a nephrectomy. 7. In penetrating injury, the formal teaching is mandatory exploration of a renal hematoma. Real world experience shows that this isn't always necessary- such as in tangential injuries or injuries to the periphery- on a case-by-case basis. References 1. For most people we want feedback at work, but it is also something we dread. Unless feedback is actionable and helpful, it just feels like unnecessary criticism or a way for organizations to try and get people to fit into toxic workplace cultures. In the HBR article entitled Women Get “Nicer” Feedback — and It Holds Them Back authors Lily Jampol, Aneeta Rattan and Elizabeth Baily Wolf shared how their research finds even if their male and female employees perform at exactly the same level, managers tend to prioritize kindness more when giving feedback to women than when giving the same feedback to men. Across a series of studies, we asked more than 1,500 MBA students, full-time employees, and managers based in the U.S. and the UK to imagine giving developmental feedback to an employee who needed to improve their performance. The employee was described in exactly the same way to all participants, except that half were told the employee's name was Sarah, while the other half were told the employee's name was Andrew. We then asked the participants about their goals going into this conversation, and while they all said they wanted to give candid feedback, those who were told the employee was named Sarah were significantly more likely than those who were told the employee was named Andrew to prioritize being kind as well. This was true regardless of the gender or political leanings of the person giving the feedback: Whether they self-identified as male or female, liberal or conservative, our participants consistently reported being more motivated to be kind when giving feedback to a woman than when giving it to a man. Joining us on the podcast today is Lily Jampol, Partner and Head of People Science and Services at ReadySet and Aneeta Rattan, Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior at London Business School, where we will unpack all things feedback related. In their article for HBR, Lily, Aneeta and Elizabeth share that constructive feedback is essential for anyone's growth. Most of what we learn at work – around 70% happens informally and on the job. We learn through the feedback we get, it is literally how we develop our social and technical skills. But as a manager, it can be challenging to get the balance right between being kind but also clear and firm. Given the important role that feedback had on an employee's development, engagement and performance, we need leaders to understand how to get it right. Here Lily shares four actions we can use to improve the feedback we give: Action One: Create a culture of feedback systems and behavioral approaches. Action Two: Establish common touch points so early intervention takes place when employees seem to be struggling. Action Three: Prepare your feedback sessions, what are the three things you want to get across in your feedback? Action Four: Review the feedback which has been given, take an audit to use for future feedback sessions. Lily Jampol Aneeta Rattan

Join our Miami Trauma team including Drs. Urréchaga, Neeman, and Rattan as they dive into the literature regarding a topic that has become all too common to the US news cycle- gun violence. They will go over a recent paper from JAMA and include other important literature while trying to understand this complex problem that has been grappling US public policy. Quick Hits: 1. Firearm injury is the leading cause death in the US among ages 1-19 2. For every person killed violently by someone else with a firearm, there are 3 survivors. 3. Gun ownership triples the risk of homicide 4. Permit laws and preventing people convicted of a violent crime from owning a firearm decrease firearm-related death and have a positive ripple effect even outside state borders. In short, for effective reductions of firearm-related injury and death, federal legislation will be more effective than state-by-state References 1. Liu, Y, Siegel, M, Sen, B. This week I had the pleasure of interviewing someone whose channel I have loved since I first discovered her it: Dr. Vanita Rattan. She talks a lot about hyperpigmentation and skincare on her channel. It was such a pleasure getting to know her better in this interview. We only had a short window of time available so we jam-packed as much information as we could into this interview. I'm so inspired by her story and how she went full-time on Youtube. Failure was not an option for her. Her work ethic, her passion, and her energy for YouTube is so palpable and motivating. After listening to this interview, I think you're going to be fired up! Our connection was a bit spotty, so the audio has some glitches in it! Click HERE to watch this interview on YouTube Full show notes at erikavieira.net ---------- Love the podcast? You can hear the pride in the voices of Scott Mast and Juan Goiricelaya, owners of the vintage furniture store, Circa Who. Beyond selling furniture, they are curators, restorers and stewards of the fanciful Palm Beach aesthetic that's having quite a moment lately. We talk about what goes into running a store full of vintage treasures, and their connection to a particular designer, Mario Lopez Torres. Mr. Torres was the creator of the iconic furniture pieces that feature rattan animals and plants... I'm talking about rattan palm trees that hold light fixtures instead of coconuts, monkeys holding up tables like a waiter holds a tray above his head, and all kinds of birds doing all kinds of things. I'm not sure rattan ever went out of style, but it's certainly having a revival, with no signs of it slowing down. Scott and Juan have taken the legacy of Mario Lopez Torres and continued his work for the rest of us to enjoy.
