Re-Broadcast: Directing Legend James Burrows Explores Why Jay Lacks “That Certain Magic”

In memory of the great James Borrows we rebroadcasting this episode of "Dont Be Alone with Jay Kogen". We talk with James Burrows about his reign as Hollywood's greatest sitcom director, being the son of Abe Burrows, the genetics of comedy, his book "Directed by James Burrows", "Cheers", "Will & Grace", "The Mary Tyler Moore Show", "Taxi", "Friends", the scripts that make him want to direct, the ones that don't, his amazing memory, his humble beginnings, the decade it took him to learn how to direct, working with geniuses like James L. Brooks, Chuck Lorre, and Kohan & Mutchnick, and Andy Kaufman. And Jimmy explains how his two best friends are Al Michaels and Bruce Springsteen. BIO: James Burrows was one of television's most respected and honored creative talents. Over his distinguished career, Burrows was the recipient of eleven Emmys, five Directors Guild of America Awards, the 1996 American Comedy Awards' Creative Achievement Award, the Television Critics Association's Career Achievement Award, and in 2006 he was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences' Hall of Fame and was honored by the US Comedy Arts Festival with their Career Tribute Award. He was the recipient of 22 nominations for the Directors Guild of America Award, thus bestowing him the honor of being the most nominated director in the history of television at the Guild. He was honored by the DGA with the Inaugural 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award in Television. In November of 2015 he directed his 1,000th episode, which was recognized by a TV Special on NBC in January of 2016. Burrows' success as the director of television pilots was legendary. He directed the first two episodes of the "Frasier" reboot's second season, and wrapped the pilot "Mid-Century Modern" for Fox, which went to series. In January of 2020, he received his fifth DGA Award for directing the Emmy Award-winning show "Live in Front of a Studio Audience #1: Norman Lear's All in the Family and The Jeffersons." He was also asked back to direct "Live in Front of a Studio Audience #3: Diff'rent Strokes and The Facts of Life" in December of 2021. In June of 2022, he published his autobiography, "Directed by James Burrows," which received considerable attention and praise from the industry. Burrows was probably best known as co-creator, executive producer and director of the critically acclaimed series "Cheers." The hit show, which aired for 11 seasons, is tied for the most nominated Comedy series in the Television Academy's history and is in third place for most Emmys received by a Comedy Series. Burrows also received numerous awards for his work on "Will & Grace," "Frasier," "Friends," "Wings," "Night Court," "Taxi," and "Dear John." For the first time in 25 years, he returned to the stage in the spring of 1998 to direct the highly acclaimed "The Man Who Came to Dinner" at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago, starring John Mahoney. Burrows learned his trade from the very best, the legendary writer/director Abe Burrows, whose noted career included such classics as "Guys and Dolls," "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," and "Cactus Flower." Born in Los Angeles and raised in New York, Burrows graduated from Oberlin College and continued his education at Yale, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree. Burrows relocated to Hollywood to work as a dialogue coach for "O.K. Crackerby!," a short-lived television series starring Burl Ives. When the show ended, he returned to New York and initially worked as a stage manager before directing several off-Broadway shows, such as "The Castro Complex," and stock productions of "The Odd Couple" and "Never Too Late." In 1974, Burrows moved back to the West Coast when he was invited to visit MTM Productions in Los Angeles and offered a job directing an episode of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." Mr. Burrows and his wife, Debbie, resided in Los Angeles and between them they had four daughters. He passed away on June 19, 2026. He left an indelible mark on American television. He will be remembered and missed. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Rob Pero discusses key barriers tribal nations face when entering the cannabis and hemp industries, emphasizing that elders are increasingly recognizing economic opportunities despite initial skepticism. A major challenge is finding trustworthy, vetted consultants to execute plans, which ICIA is addressing by curating a network of credible vendors. The speaker explains how recent federal hemp amendments have created regulatory complexities but also opportunities for tribes to establish their own codes and ordinances, potentially positioning them uniquely in the market. Drawing from Wisconsin's fragmented landscape of hemp availability without recreational or medical access, the speaker highlights ongoing efforts like the Wisconsin Wellness coalition to advance medicinal legalization despite political divisions. They discuss the challenges of cannabis legalization in Wisconsin, where Republicans favor medicinal use while Democrats push for full legalization. They emphasize the urgent need for medical protections to prevent criminalization. When asked about staying motivated through exhaustion, they highlight the power of community conversations and industry collaboration. The speakers mention upcoming events including the Reservation Economic Summit in Vegas, where indigenous cannabis has recently gained recognition as an economic development topic. They note that over one hundred of the 574 federally recognized tribes are engaged in cannabis or hemp enterprises, representing significant momentum for indigenous cannabis initiatives. What happens when you combine environmental cleanup, competitive art, and community giving? On this episode of the Mount Pleasant Podcast, host Brian Cleary talks with Jim Haag, President and Director of The Beautification Transformation Project (TBT Project). Drawing on his background from the Savannah College of Art and Design, Jim launched this unique initiative after noticing heavy debris piling up along local corridors like Highway 17 and Rifle Range Road. At its core, TBT is about reimagining our relationship with the environment by turning "waste into wonder". Jim's vision is to create a repeatable model that can be taken to cities nationwide. By proving that roadside blight can be harvested as a raw medium for high-quality sculpture, the project aims to transform the way communities view litter—shifting the narrative from a simple cleanup task to a creative opportunity that supports both the local arts economy and those in need. For this year's inaugural Mount Pleasant competition, the project is focusing on three key areas: Supporting the Arts: Creating a competitive art contest for local high schoolers, college students, and professionals using recycled materials. Helping the Environment: Launching a massive August cleanup to pull 10,000 pounds of litter from Mount Pleasant roadsides. Giving Back: Partnering with local businesses to display the final sculptures, which will be auctioned off to benefit the MUSC Children's Hospital. Get Involved: Want to showcase your creativity or support the cause? Merch sold out by lunchtime. “Perfect” status quietly returned. Someone built a race plan around getting a photo with Boba Fett. That's the kind of wonderfully specific runDisney chaos we love, and we're recapping it live from the inaugural Rise and Run Cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas.We break down the 2026 RunDisney Springtime Surprise weekend from the expo to the finish line, including what went smoothly, what still needs fixing, and how to think about merch strategy if you can't arrive on day one. We also talk about the surprise perfect recognition, why messaging matters for long-time participants, and what runners can do when demand keeps feeding resellers. Along the way we share a big personal update, Greg's honor of guiding a runner through the New York City Marathon, plus some of the sponsor support that makes these weekends and trips easier to plan. Then we hit the races: the 5K with standout theming and costumes, the 10K from a cheering perspective with behind-the-scenes finish line logistics, and the Inside Out themed 10-miler that closes the runDisney season with moody lighting, core memory vibes, and character stops that spark big feelings. Star Wars energy shows up loud through character lines, which leads to our ongoing debate about whether a full Star Wars race weekend could return and what might be standing in the way.We finish with a rapid-fire race report, a live trivia contest that doubles as a weirdly fun Rise and Run history lesson, and plenty of moments that remind us why the runDisney community keeps growing. Subscribe for more runDisney race weekend recaps, share this with a friend planning their next Disney running trip, and leave a review with your favorite Springtime Surprise moment.Send us Fan MailSupport the showRise and Run Podcast is supported by our audience. I hope you didn't think we were done with Twilight's Fall content, because we have no intention of stopping! This week we're trying something experimental that I enjoyed quite a bit, we decided to actually simulate an inaugural splice so we talk through some of the decision making process that goes into the initial draft. It's really clear in talking through it that there is a lot of difficult decisions to be made in this game mode. I really want to continue encouraging people to try it as it's an extremely fun way to experience this game. Anyways if you are confused by what we're talking about in this episode I would check out episode 427 about the Twilight's Fall rulebook. Music provided by Ben Prunty.
