Over the last few weeks, we’ve talked about identity crises and exit strategies — and I’ve been doing the work myself. When I look at where I stand now, and where I want to go, the decision becomes clear: It’s time to retire the Your Badass Journey podcast and allow the space to launch something new. It is possible to have a graceful exit that makes sure you are still taking care of your clients, your community, and yourself in the process. For me, that means taking a pause so that I can intentionally reintroduce the next level of myself, and creating an arena for all of us to come together in a new way. The most graceful way for me to exit is to close out this show with gratitude and a desire for more. I’ve been talking recently about the identity crisis that happens when you begin to uplevel your life. One of the things that helps me align with my actions is thinking about how I’m going to gracefully exit before I start something new. It might sound backward at first, but knowing that I have a plan for how to get out of a situation, if and when I have to, makes me feel safer and more confident in the moment. We feel like we have to carry forward everything we have become, but if we do that without considering how to integrate it into what we want next, we get bogged down and stretched thin. It’s important to be clear about who you need to be and what role you need to play to launch into your next project, and that we don’t make any concessions on that evolution. Being set on your exit strategies helps you appreciate the moment for what it is, infinitely valuable. When we are looking to up-level — becoming the next version of ourselves — we can often experience an identity crisis alongside it. To accomplish new things, we have to essentially become a different person. But in the moment, it can be difficult to identify which parts of you are essential and which need to evolve. We have to take stock of the parts of ourselves that are no longer compatible with what it takes for the next version to stand in our vision. If you’re in that phase of up-leveling, there are some questions that you can ask yourself to face what’s holding you back. When we deal with trauma at a young age, it often shows up throughout our lives in ways we can’t immediately recognize. In our last episode with Natasha Dewhirst, she asked about how to translate what she’s trying to offer to attract her ideal clients. This question ended up leading to a discussion of how to manage through trauma and having consciousness around where trauma could be holding us back. It’s important to identify the ways trauma has forced us to cope and how we can manage those behaviors effectively. Only then can we master our behavior to make the best of every situation. I talk about the five pillars of my life all the time: Health, mental wellness, career, financial wellness, and relationships. When I think about how to show love in health, one person in particular comes to mind... Amy Ledin is someone who inspires me daily. She shows up every day like a badass, stays on top of her health (and has fun doing it!), and is so open about sharing all of the changes and transformations she has had to go through to be standing here today. And she has not only overcome her own personal challenges, she’s also helped thousands of people get connected and love themselves through their own journey. The key to her personal success is through showing discipline in her life. And no, discipline is not punishment! In fact, discipline is one of the greatest ways we can love on ourselves. Because what is discipline but keeping the promises we make to ourselves? And we always keep our promises to the people we love most. In John Maxwell’s “The 360 Degree Leader,” he shares a concept called the leadership loop. This concept helps you build your leadership principles and practice so that you are evolving yourself and empowering your team. There are seven principles involved in the loop, and the number one principle is caring. Caring is a huge part of how I show up as a leader, a coach, and in my own life, and it has been an important ingredient in my success formula. When I get to the essence of my core value of love, caring is the verb I use to express that. If you can assess how you are showing up in a caring way in your leadership stance, then you can begin to learn how to embody this more in your life. But standing in cancel culture, we need to learn to care for each other first. People are trying to show up in the best way they know how. Most are not malicious, but being called out for being wrong should not be at the detriment of someone else’s career. We have to let people make mistakes, love on them anyways, and let them grow from it. Love is one of my core values, and I try to lean into it in everything that I am. But how do you put some love energy into your business without being too woo-woo or crossing a boundary with it? So much of our business life is treated as if it has to be professional, unemotional, and detached. But that doesn’t contribute to a loving energy, and it doesn’t allow you to stand in who you are authentically. You need to embrace love in your business by seeking out soulmate clients. If you feel like you’re attracting the wrong people into your business, start defining what your soulmate client looks like, feels like, and acts like. I have had an interesting start to the year. There have been a number of distractions that popped up, but they haven’t been all bad. They have forced me to leverage my time intentionally, in a way that allows me to integrate all of the things that matter to me. This made me realize that the topic of time management is something that we could all benefit from. When you are feeling the struggle of not having enough time, or not achieving all that you had hoped to by now, it’s important to maximize the time you have in order to live the fulfilled life that you want. I like to use the last week of the year to hyper-focus on defining who I want to be, what I want to show up in, where I want to have an impact, and what I want to feel by the end of the year. This helps to create a guiding force for all I do, while also defining boundaries on what I say yes to and what I avoid. The start of this year didn’t go quite as I planned, but that has only forced me to sit in the now as I plan out my visualization of 2021. As entrepreneurs, it becomes so easy to focus solely on our business because it blurs lives between personal alignment and income. It’s important that we pay attention to all areas of our lives, not just one. Let’s look at how we can find integration and balance in our lives so that we can reach our ultimate vision. How do you make sure you’re focusing on the right things and putting your time into the right activities? It starts with getting clear on your priorities and then making sure that you are time blocking your calendar to make sure those priorities come first. So often our calendars fill up with other peoples’ obligations before our own, which leaves us less time for the things we care about—and less capable of helping others to our fullest potential. Let’s look into how you can set up a framework for time blocking that makes sure you put first things first so that you can make the best use of every moment. Do you ever start something with an exit plan? Most people focus on building a business without ever thinking about how they will get out if they outgrow it or want to step into something new. When you’re in the early stages of building a business, asking yourself the question about what exiting it looks like will help you define why you are in business in the first place, and what you need to do to create a container for your business that allows you to step away once you’ve outgrown it. As we close out the year, it’s a good time to think about what we want to leave behind, what we want to carry forward, and what we want to focus on in the new year. If you are sitting in something that you’ve built that does not fill you up any more, you need to ask yourself how you can move on gracefully. If you’re here in the United States, now is the perfect time to focus on gratitude and what you’re thankful for. Wherever you are, it’s never a bad time to take stock of what you’re grateful for and sit in appreciation for what you have. While taking time to be thankful for what you have in your life, it’s important to ask ourselves how we can learn to make gratitude a common practice in our everyday lives, not just something we do one day a year. If you’ve been so focused on serving others, you may not have recognized the power of relating gratitude and forgiveness. When you’re saying yes to too many things, you begin to compromise on your values and priorities. But how do you manage the balance of wanting to be true to yourself while remaining open to new experiences? My goal this year was to remain uncompromised: Not saying yes to the wrong things for the wrong reasons, and only saying yes to the things that fuel me up. I’ve been working with several health and wellness practices lately and I’ve noticed a common thread that’s holding people back from building the wealth they want and deserve. When you come up through an education system that is all about the care for your clients and customers, you may not be exposed to what a business structure meant to drive in your ideal clients looks like. You may want to help everyone, but it can help to focus your efforts on who you can impact the most. There is a difference between being an owner of your practice instead of just a service. Many founders of service-based businesses are brought up around the construct of service but don’t know how to focus on business building, market to their clients, and building an attraction layer that sustains them. You have permission to step out of service for a while and focus on your business. You just need a plan to take care of your clients while you step up into who you are meant to be.
