We are lab rats. We're constantly experimenting on ourselves to find the optimal way to make ourselves fitter, skinnier, healthier, happier, whatever it is we're trying to do that day. We've tried everything – including the CGM, or continuous glucose monitor, which we've come back around to. What it does is monitor your glucose levels throughout the day, particularly how your levels rise the two hours after eating something. Now that we're in Italy, we really wanted to give this thing a test run. We spend this episode digging into what we found and why it shocked us. Brian is a struggling tech entrepreneur and relies on his wife, Serena, a physician with a stable income of $235,000, to support his family. Serena wants Brian to get a job and admit that his start-up isn't working. She's extremely focused — perhaps too focused — on buying a house. Brian doesn't like saying “No” to Serena, so he evades questions and promises that everything will change "4-6 months from now," but after seven years, Serena's patience is running thin.  Can you spot the red flags?  Listen to the resentment and distrust in her voice. Brian's promises to get a job and turn things around are falling flat. What's worse is that he can't even see it.  I'm not going to sugarcoat it; it's heartbreaking to watch a seemingly successful couple totally disconnected from each other.  I'm determined to get them on the same page. Tune in to see how their story unfolds.  We started the conversation focusing on Serena's dream to buy a house sooner rather than later, but it becomes apparent that the house is a distraction from the deeper desire to have a partner on the same page as her.  Connect with Ramit https://www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com/podcast/ (Website) https://www.instagram.com/ramit/ (Instagram) https://twitter.com/ramit (Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/ramitsethi (Facebook) https://www.youtube.com/user/ramitsethi/featured (YouTube) https://www.linkedin.com/in/ramitsethi/ (Linkedin) If you and your partner have a money issue and you want my help, I occasionally select a couple to work with, free of charge. Justin and I are friends through Strategic Coach so it was great to sit down with him, and really dig deep into where he came from, and what drives him. Family is Justin's most treasured part of life, going all the way back to his childhood. His father was a WWII hero. Justin found his diary after his death, only to discover that their writing styles were exactly the same.  He believes everyone should strive to discover their passions and talents, but more importantly, that the people who find theirs are obligated to put them to use.  A master journalist with twenty years of experience, now, he runs a PR firm of his own. Justin considers himself a journalist once more. It's just a different form of journalism. Now, he gets to choose the people he works with. Now, he isn't beholden to covering negative news, a concept he's never been a fan of. We talk about the need (or lack thereof) for business knowledge when becoming an entrepreneur, the basics of spreading a message, and the importance of living with purpose and intent – both for ourselves and for others. Crystal took her current role in February of 2020, just before the summer was enveloped in so many violent tragedies across the country. These events and society's reaction to them brought social issues back into the spotlight, and gave new, heightened, meaning to her responsibility. She talks about what it was like to start the role in that kind of environment and takes a closer look at our profession as a whole — how far it's come in the areas of diversity and inclusion and what each of us, individually, can do to help make it more equitable for all. The Daily Helping
234. Energy Shopping to Transform Your Life with Emily Russell

The Daily Helping

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 22, 2021 25:21

Today, our expert guest is Emily Evans Russell, an Access Consciousness facilitator, mindset coach, and best-selling author. She has helped thousands of people all over the world transform and improve their lives. Once a burned out ex-teacher, a stressed out mom, and an unhappily married partner, Emily discovered and began using the tools of Access Consciousness and transformed her life, now a gladly divorced six-figure business owner. Access Consciousness is essentially a toolbox, many of them in the form of questions, that helps you change your point of view and your perspective. It has many things in common with cognitive behavioral therapy, so there are scientific grounds for its effectiveness. Emily is a proponent of what she calls “Energy Shopping.” She describes it as creating your life by “shopping” the qualities of life you see around you while focusing deeply on the energy of those things rather than the expectation of what you should want.  If you want to go to energy shopping in your life, start by looking at a tough choice that you have to make. When faced with a decision, rather than going to the worst possible scenario or weighing the pros and cons, you want to start asking yourself some questions. For example, “What would my life be like in five years?” Then you look at the other side of things, “What would my life be like if I didn't choose this?” When you ask those questions, you'll feel that one choice seems lighter or more expansive, while the other feels heavier and more limiting. You want to go with the light, expansive choice, even if it seems strange or hard. With just a few questions, you can completely transform your life beyond what you thought was possible.   The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “I'd love for people to walk away with this idea of looking at choices based not so much on your mind but starting to follow and trust yourself and follow the energy in your life. Treat it like a game and see if things get a little bit easier or a little bit more fun for you when you look at heavy or light when you're choosing things. Have fun with it and see if it can create something greater than what your mind has figured out for you.”   --   Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. In Episode 127, Quinn wants to know just how the hell “innovation” actually works. His guest is Christopher Mims, a journalist for the Wall Street Journal, who's spent a career asking big questions about the most pressing technological and societal issues we face, from robot trains to the future of batteries, brain implants, and whatever happens to land in-between. The thesis: every little bit counts, and it's more predictable than you think. Or is it? Together, Quinn and Chris explore the team dynamics of innovation, the “great man” question, the invisible force behind Moore's Law, and more.  The bad news: Nobody gets to save the world. The good news: Everyone gets to save the world, a little bit. Today's episode is brought to you by Avocado Green Brands, where sustainability comes first. They craft their GOTS certified organic mattresses, pillows, and bedding with natural materials sourced from their organic farms in India, in their own clean-energy powered facility in Los Angeles, where their team shares a singular purpose: To raise the bar for what it means to be a sustainable business.  Avocado is Climate Neutral Certified for net zero emissions and donates one percent of all revenue to environmental nonprofits through its membership with 1% For the Planet.  https://www.avocadogreenmattress.com/?utm_medium=partner&utm_source=email&utm_campaign=INI_November (Find out what it means to sleep organic at AvocadoMattress.com). All their positive feelings and new skills got thrown to the side, and they went right back to their old habits. That's why I had to add a part two to our conversation. That's today's episode. When they're discussing the trip, Monique already has her argument ready before Pablo finishes a sentence. Pablo's fists are clenched. He wants to be the laid-back, confident guy Monique fell in love with, but his views on money have changed. You'll hear him describe “Antonio,” his scarcity-minded alter ego. We both have the unique experience of working with our mom. Today, we're taking time to get into the pros, the cons, and the things we wish we'd known when we first started this great family working arrangement. There are some amazing upsides and wins to working with family. Most importantly, nobody will ever have your back more than family will. At the same time, no one is more willing to point out where you're going astray, which can shorten the time it takes to get the right answer. There's a unique sense of comradery and loyalty that comes with family empire building. If you get it right, it can be so rewarding. On the other hand, when big business meets big life, things can get messy. Family can get under your skin in ways that no one else can. Mixing the wrong ingredients and attitudes can be a damaging recipe for stress. Plus, you see them outside of work which can make it feel like the job never ends. It's worth finding ways to overcome these problems, though, because the pre-existing chemistry and knack for collaboration among family members can be a huge benefit to your business. Today, our expert guest is Steve Hoffman, also known as Captain Hoff. He's the CEO of Founders Space, one of the world's leading startup accelerators with over 50 partners in 22 countries. Founders Space was ranked the number one incubator for overseas startups by Forbes and Entrepreneur magazine. He's also a venture investor, serial entrepreneur, and author of several award-winning books including his latest, Surviving a Startup. Steve is a self-described avid gamer. Through high school he made over one hundred games, including board games, role playing games, and computer games. He was also very interested in making movies. He had proficiency both in the creative arts and in the technical skills necessary to pull these off, a mix that he attributes this to his genes. His mother was an artist and his father was a rocket scientist. Following his father's advice to study computers, Steve went to college for electrical computer engineering, but as soon as he graduated, he realized that the other half of him was missing – so he applied to the top two film schools in the country and studied film and television at USC for graduate school. With the dawn of the internet, he launched three web-based companies before finally feeling it was time to take a break. So, he began helping his friends who were entrepreneurs, keeping the wisdom archived on his blog. He called that blog, Founder Space. Steve wrote Surviving a Startup to package his decades of knowledge and experience into a book that could benefit other entrepreneurs. He shares that one of the biggest mistakes an entrepreneur can make is thinking they know more than they do. Beyond that, he also offers other helpful signposts for budding entrepreneurs: Make sure you're starting your business for the right reasons. Get to your customers as early as possible. Bring the right people onto your team as soon as possible. Entrepreneurship is hard enough as it is, so don't make it any harder on yourself. Learning from the lessons of those who've gone before you can greatly accelerate your success.   The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “Understand who you are. What will really make you happy? Is it just money in the bank? Is it your relationship with your family? You have to invest in all of them. If you just invest in your business, at the expense of all your other relationships, you're probably not going to be happy because those things will wither and die. Also, who are you? It's okay to have a dream of being an entrepreneur, but can you handle stress well, are you very flexible? If you aren't flexible, if you can't handle stress, you might be better at a job that's more routine or supporting an entrepreneur, like joining a startup a little later. This self knowledge, take the time to do this, because it will benefit you much more than almost anything else you do in life.”   --   Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. Having experienced special, science-defying gifts from a young age, Sifu eventually found his way to living in China, where he became a devout student of multiple disciplines and styles of martial arts while tapping into the energies all around us. We share a fascinating discussion detailing how he learned the ins and outs of various styles of Chinese martial arts and applied them to his own life with a mixture of mysticism and soulfulness. Sifu has used what he's learned to tackle his own mental health challenges and now he wants to share his tools with the world. And it doesn't stop there. Sifu is an advocate for helping those with minority backgrounds, racial, sexual, or otherwise, to reconcile with traumas they may have suffered and find ways to grow. It's important work that truly enriches the world.   His life is one of intentional modalities and a strong sense of self. Dr. Daniel Amen is one of America's leading psychiatrists and brain health experts, and someone Jordan happens to be obsessed with. He's helped millions of people heal and optimize their brains, end mental illness, and live happier lives. A trailblazer in mental health, he has revolutionized how we address depression, anxiety, and stress. With 12 New York Times bestsellers under his belt, scores of celebrity patients (including Justin Beiber and Miley Cyrus), and millions of followers across social media, he's rightfully made his mark as "the most popular psychiatrist in America." Unlike most psychiatrists, Dr. Daniel Amen looks at the brain first and uses brain scans as a visual cue to explain self-sabotaging behaviors robbing us of true happiness. In this episode, Dr. Amen outlines specific steps to boost your mood with a brain care toolkit of diet and lifestyle habits. From feeding your brain the best diet (say yes to colorful fruits and veggies, no to alcohol, drugs, and fruit juice) to the mental exercises that train you to be happy and achieve your goals. Plus, discover how your brain type dictates what makes you happy and how to cultivate micro-moments into your routine to increase your overall happiness.  There is nowhere in school where they teach you to question your own thoughts, so many of us overlook – or ignore – the red flags for brain health. Dr. Daniel is rewriting the rulebook to help replace behavioral addictions with empowering strategies to think and act smarter to better our brains and be happier people, achieving our goals and bringing them to life. Even, and especially, when a task is easy for us, teaching children a life skill is harder than it seems. As a parent, this can be extremely frustrating. The positives, though, are worth the trouble. Consider this, the sooner our kids know how to help around the house, the sooner they can help us around the house!  More importantly, and beyond our own benefit, ensuring they've got the most recent software update on self-sustaining skills like tying their shoes and reading a clock provide the daily boosts of confidence and personal growth that a child needs. This comes down to one question we receive again and again when it comes to teaching children. It falls into something I call The Bermuda Triangle of Education. It's a place where so many of us go wrong, and yet the principles to get out are actually quite simple. There are three parts of this triangle. Our own desire to teach leads us to believe that we should already know how to teach. When a child fails to learn, we pull in the other two aspects of this triangle of doom. Children are smart: they feel the pressure and obligation that parents add to their teaching. These three features: a desire to teach, thwarted by pressure and obligation, lead to the cranky learning experience so many of us are trying to overcome in our homes! Listen to hear exactly where we're going wrong and how we can approach teaching tasks and tools in a way that helps kids want to use them. Monique is very open with what she wants in a relationship. “I always expected that fairytale love, the guy pays for everything, the guy opens the door, the guy waits to kiss me at the end of the night...” But her boyfriend, Pablo, disagrees. He feels taken advantage of. He shares the story of Monique ordering a $10 soup in a restaurant when he wasn't even eating, then both of them staring at the bill to see who would pay for it. Their beliefs come from their upbringing and very specific personal experiences. For Monique, she believes Pablo should pay because of how she was raised. At one point, she says it's his job to pursue her. Pablo wants to split things “fairly” down the middle, saying he wants a “partner.” Their opposing money lenses lead to awkward exchanges at restaurants when the check arrives. For Monique, him paying for a $10 soup is symbolic of being “taken care of.” Pablo doesn't think it's fair. He says he would prefer she did the “fake check dance” before he steps up to “be the gentleman.” How many invisible scripts can you spot? What does your reaction to the situation say about your relationship with money?   I walked into this episode pretty confident about what would happen. I was wrong.
