The AI-based cardiac disorder detection system will support physicians in the early diagnosis of congenital heart diseases instead of children undergoing expensive and lengthy diagnostic procedures directly. Walton Institute at South East Technological University (SETU) is proud to announce that Dr Lizy Abraham, Head of the Emerging Networks Labs Division, has been named one of the successful awardees to secure funding under the SFI-IRC Pathway programme. Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Patrick O'Donovan TD has announced a €14.6 million investment in 25 new research projects as part of the collaborative initiative between Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and the Irish Research Council (IRC) to support early-career research across all disciplines and to encourage a cohesive research ecosystem in Ireland. Dr Lizy's project will explore An Artificial Intelligence (AI) - based Automated Approach for the Classification of Paediatric Heart Murmurs and Disease Diagnosis using Wireless Phonocardiography. Congenital Heart Diseases (CHDs) are malformations that occur due to abnormal development of the heart at the birth of a child. Listening to the heart with a stethoscope to identify heart murmurs continues to be the most common clinical screening method to detect heart problems in newborns. However, it depends greatly on the physician's experience. The gold standard for diagnosis of CHD is echocardiography, but this has its limitations when performed on children as it takes almost 30 to 45 minutes, and the child should remain still during this time. Referring all children with a murmur for this expensive and lengthy diagnostic procedure is simply not feasible or cost-effective. Using intelligent techniques to analyse a phonocardiogram (PCG) - a plot of heart murmurs obtained with a digital stethoscope - offers a valuable alternative. PCG signals combined with the power of AI can provide an objective interpretation of heart sounds to complement traditional auscultation methods. "This research proposes an automated AI-based cardiac disorder detection system using the PCG heart sound signals," explains Dr Lizy. "This will support physicians and primary health care providers in the early diagnosis of congenital heart diseases, instead of children undergoing expensive and lengthy diagnostic procedures directly." The funding, covering a four-year period, will provide additional support for a postgraduate student. The project will kick off in September 2024.

This is the holiday season, usually a time when most people celebrate and find joy but for some of us who are bereaved, it's difficult for us to experience joy especially when we see everyone around us in such a joyful mood. At the time, Lizy was just two weeks shy of her 13th birthday, which added an extra layer of poignancy to her loss. Not only did Julia and her husband have to learn to handle their own grief, but how to tenderly guide their remaining five children through the process of coping with their loss as a family and as individuals. Lizy's parents have focused on remembering her with joy and preserving her place in their family by creating new traditions in her name, as well as maintaining old ones the family cherishes.Loyal Listeners might remember Julia from Season 2 when her episode was entitled, “Grieving with Grace.” https://tinyurl.com/4kmmtsnwLinks to “Bereaved But Still Me” Social Media and Podcast Pages:Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/bereaved-but-still-me/id1333229173Spreaker: https://www.spreaker.com/show/heart-to-heart-with-michaelFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/HugPodcastNetworkYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGPKwIU5M_YOxvtWepFR5ZwWebsite: https://www.hug-podcastnetwork.com/

Lizy Suris is a holistic nutrition expert. her interest in health and wellness began in her upbringing - with her grandparents and parents always placing a big focus on nutrition and prioritizing holistic remedies before leaning onto western medicine. She says, "As I'm sure many of us experienced, my journey to being “healthy” was misinformed for many years - focusing on the poor advice that we tend to get about what is healthy (i.e. low carb wraps, veggie chips, protein bars, etc.). (It took quite a bit of time to discover epigenetics and find my way to what is actual true holistic wellness). At this same time, I was on my path to become a medical doctor. I got my BS in biology from Baylor University and worked as a medical scribe for several years to accumulate experience for my med school applications. This gave me such an amazing knowledge base in diagnoses, understanding testing, medications, and the such, which is immensely helpful even in my current nutrition practice. It was this exposure to the realness of our medical system here in the US that I realized I did not want to contribute to this band-aid - the - symptoms approach. Instead, I wanted to be on the front-end of those diseases, helping to prevent them or helping to address the root cause of them. This led me to get my MS from the American College of Healthcare Sciences. Since then, I have begun my own holistic nutrition practice (one person show!) where I see clients virtually. I also have a small blog and Instagram account (@lizyfromnutritiously) where I share occasional food or wellness content when I feel inspired.
