Examining sectarian divergence in the early modern Middle East, Ayşe Baltacıoğlu-Brammer's study provides a fresh perspective on the Sunni–Shi'i division. Drawing on Ottoman Turkish, Persian, and European sources, Boundaries of Belonging: Sectarianism and Statecraft in the Early Modern Ottoman Empire (Cambridge University Press, 2026) explores the paradox of an Ottoman state that combined rigid ideological discourses with pragmatic governance. Through an analysis of key figures, events, periods, and policies, Boundaries of Belonging reveals how political, economic, and religious forces intersected, challenging simplistic sectarian binaries. Baltacıoğlu-Brammer provides a comprehensive historical account of Ottoman governance during the long sixteenth century, focusing on its relationship with non-Sunni Muslim subjects, particularly the Qizilbash. As both the founders of the Safavid Empire and the largest Shiʿi-affiliated group within the Ottoman realm, the Qizilbash occupied a crucial yet often misunderstood position. Boundaries of Belonging examines their role within the empire, challenging the notion that they were merely persecuted outsiders by highlighting their agency in shaping imperial policies, negotiating their status, and influencing the Ottoman–Safavid rivalry in Anatolia, Kurdistan, and Iraq, and western Iran. Kristy Woodson Harvey spotlights NICU nurses, sports coaches, and a small town in her annual summer novel, this time Summer State of Mind. If you've ever wondered “how something like this could happen in a town like theirs,” Kristy will pull back the curtain. But don't worry: as Kristy says, “There are some secrets that come to light through the course of (the book), but you know, it's me, and I love a happy ending.” Hear how Kristy learned everything she needed to on the tennis court, how decisions aren't black and white, and how this book stretched her talent. Mikki Brammer's novel Good Joy, Bad Joy is this month's Barnes & Noble Book Club Pick — and it's clear why. By delving into the lives of two elderly women, Joy and Hazel— who truly don't see themselves that way — Mikki paints a delicate portrait of female friendship, the secrets we keep, and how we cope when a loved one falls ill. Plus it's a little devious. The real question, according to Mikki? “What is a life well lived and have I lived it fully?” Dive in. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this episode of Molecule to Market, you'll go inside the outsourcing space of the global drug development sector with Steve Favaloro, Chairman and CEO of Genezen. Your host, Raman Sehgal, discusses the pharmaceutical and biotechnology supply chain with Steve, covering: His deep passion for operations, and how early lessons in hard work and customer service shaped his leadership Learning from Mark Bamforth and the entrepreneurial journey at Brammer Bio, culminating in a $1.7bn exit to Thermo Fisher Why gaining exposure to every seat at the table was critical in preparing him for the CEO role Building Genezen with a focus on strong values, hiring the right people and investing in differentiated capabilities How the cell and gene therapy market has evolved over the past decade, and why he remains optimistic about the future of curative medicines Why things inevitably go sideways in innovative drug development, and the importance of being prepared to navigate it Steve Favaloro is an experienced biotech executive, board member, and investor. He is currently Chairman and CEO of Genezen, a best-in-class gene and cell therapy CDMO with specialized expertise in viral vector manufacturing. Steve joined Genezen in 2023 and has built up a team of almost 300 employees, supporting gene and cell therapy innovators from early-stage, growth-oriented biotechs to established industry leaders. He is an executive advisor at Ampersand Capital Partners, a leading healthcare investor, and serves on the board of Biologos. He also serves on the board of advisors of Life Science Cares Boston. Prior to Genezen, Steve was CFO at Arbor Biotech, a next-generation gene editing therapeutic company. Steve also served as CFO at Arranta Bio, a leading CDMO for mRNA, from its founding in 2019 to its successful exit to Recipharm in February 2022.  Prior to this, Steve was a finance leader and ultimately CFO at Brammer Bio, where he oversaw a period of rapid expansion and capital deployment from 2016 to 2019 – leading up to its successful sale to Thermo Fisher Scientific in May 2019 for $1.7B. Before joining Brammer, Steve held finance roles of increasing responsibility at MilliporeSigma, Merck KGaA, and Bruker Corporation. Steve received his MBA and Master of Science from the Carroll School of Management at Boston College. Steve also received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Boston College.   Molecule to Market is also sponsored by Bora Pharmaceuticals and supported by Lead Candidate. Please subscribe, tell your industry colleagues and join us in celebrating and promoting the value and importance of the global life science outsourcing space. (Lander, WY) – The KOVE 1330 AM / 107.7 FM Today in the 10 interview series Coffee Time continued today with host Vince Tropea, who recently spoke with Marty Brammer. Brammer, a long-time Fremont County resident and local medical worker, continues to be one of the biggest proponents and fund raisers for the Special Olympics of Wyoming's annual Jackalope Jump, which he has been doing for over a decade. The Jackalope Jump is Special O's statewide fundraiser where teams and single jumpers take a dive into freezing cold waters, often while wearing ridiculous outfits, an aspect Brammer has taken to comical lengths each year. (You can get more info on how to donate to Marty's Jackalope Jump profile or any other team/participants by clicking here.) To hear more about Brammer's background and why he has made it his mission to raise funds for Special Olympics Wyoming, check out the full Coffee Time interview below, and make sure to stop by Lander's Jump on Saturday! Be sure to tune in to Today in the 10 and Coffee Time interviews every morning from 7:00 to 9:00 AM on KOVE 1330 AM / 107.7 FM, or stream it live right here.
