What's behind the Kroger Co.'s recent push to invest in Louisville?Jake Cannon, Louisville division president for Kroger, is on this week's Access Louisville podcast to explain that and much more.LBF has been reporting on major investments from Kroger in the market during the last few years. In March we had a story about a $1.8 million remodel of the West Broadway location. Before that, we covered a $2 million renovation of the Outer Loop Kroger. Those are just to name a few recent examples. As Cannon explains on the show: "it takes capital dollars invested into our brick and mortar stores to make sure layout of the store is right and that we have the right assortment [of products.] Thousands of items are introduced into the market each year."For example, he noted, that when he ran a Kroger store in the 2000s, there was only one energy drink on the shelves: Red Bull.  "Now it's an aisle ... everybody in the world has an energy drink and that's what the customers are looking for," he said.Late last year, Kroger also announced a $40 million new marketplace store on Beulah Church Road. The company is facing new competition in town, including Publix's entry and expansion into Louisville. Cannon talks about competition as well — including what he looks for when he visits Kroger's competitors. As well as companies that he personally admires, including Starbucks and Chik-fil-a.Cannon, originally from Utah, started working in a grocery store when he was 16 as he explained in this 2023 profile story in Business First. That store wasn't a Kroger location but he found his way to the company from there. He worked for Kroger in Utah, Las Vegas and at the company's general office in Cincinnati, before coming to Louisville. Cincinnati-based Kroger has served the Louisville community for 95 years now at 27 stores across Jefferson County. Kroger Louisville Division operates 116 retail stores in Kentucky, Southern Indiana and Southern Illinois. Kroger Co. is one of the largest employers in Greater Louisville.Access Louisville, sponsored by Baird, is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First. Chris Lee and Alfred Ezman preview the Nashville Regional, where host Vanderbilt was the country's overall No. 1 seed. Topics include: The host Commodores may have the deepest pitching staff in the country. It's headlined by lefty JD Thompson, righties Cody Bowker and Connor Fennell and a big-time, back-end arm in right-hander Sawyer Hawks. The Commodores are one of the country's best defensive teams, and talented hitters RJ Austin, Brodie Johnston, Braden Holcomb, Rustan Rigdon and Riley Nelson came on late as Vanderbilt came out of nowhere to get the tournament's top seed. Perennial rival Louisville could push the Commodores. Coach Dan McDonnell's pitching staff has struggled at times, but Patrick Forbes and Tucker Biven are talented and could help Louisville push anyone in the regional. Center fielder Lucas Moore (.470 OBP, 43 steals) is a sparkplug at the top of the lineup and the Cardinals have power from Eddie King Jr. (14 HR), Tague Davis (18) and Zion Rose (11). East Tennessee State travels west to face Vanderbilt for the first time this year; the Buccaneers knocked off Tennessee for the Vols' first loss this year and have the talent to do damage. ETSU mashed 116 home runs, with Cooper Torres (23), Cody Miller (16), Jamie Palmese (16) and Grant Gallagher (20) all having big years. The Buccaneers also have some really good arms in Michael Harpster and Brady Frederick and certainly have the talent to win games in Nashville. Wright State bashed 20 home runs, getting 23 from Boston Smith, 20 from JP Peltier and 13 from Cam GIlkerson. The Raiders must get quality pitching from Cam Allen, Garrett Peters and Jarrett Heilman in the regional if they're to advance.

The Impacts of Heat Stress on the Dry Cow and Her Fetus with Dr. Jimena Laporta, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Dr. Brian Gerloff, Renaissance Nutrition, Inc

    Real Science Exchange

This episode was recorded in Fort Wayne, Indiana, during the 2025 Tri-State Dairy Conference. Dr. Laporta gives an overview of her presentation, focusing on the impact of heat stress during the dry period on the cow, her daughters and her granddaughters. She covers heat stress impacts on mammary gland involution, as well as fetal programming effects on the daughter and granddaughter. (3:37)Daughters of heat-stressed cows have fewer sweat glands located deeper in the skin, thicker skin and more sebaceous glands. This was observed at birth, weaning and puberty. They sweat more than heifers who weren't heat stressed in utero, but have higher rectal temperatures during the preweaning phase. Dr. Laporta hypothesizes that if those calves were exposed to additional stress, they would be more susceptible to illness because of the higher core temperature.  (6:34)The panel discusses heat stress impacts on male fetuses and the potential for epigenetic changes to be transmitted through semen. Dr. Gerloff asks about differences in the impacts of heat stress on first-calf heifers compared to older cows. Dr. Laporta describes the survival rates of heifers who were heat-stressed in utero. Heifers are lost from the herd even before first calving, with more following in first and second lactation.  (11:00)Dr. Laporta outlines the differences between heat-stressed and cooled treatments in her experiments. They measure respiration rates and rectal temperatures to assess the physiological impacts of heat stress in the cows. Scott asks how long the heat stress period needs to be in order to observe negative effects. Dr. Gerloff asks about calf mortality rates between the two groups. Dr. Laporta estimates a 12% death loss in the heat stress groups, who seem to be more susceptible to the usual calf illnesses. It appears that gut closure might occur earlier in heat-stressed calves - maybe even before birth, which does not bode well for their immune systems. (16:49)Dr. Laporta details how heat stress impacts mammary gland involution. Early in the dry period, you want a spike in cell death to build new cells for the next lactation. In heat-stressed cows, the spike in cell death early in the dry period is diminished, not allowing those cells to die. This results in less proliferation of the mammary gland, and the cow starts her next lactation with older cells that weren't renewed in full. Thus, producing less milk. Dr. Gerloff shares some of his experiences with heat stress in his area of Illinois. (22:17)Heat stress has negative impacts on other organs as well. Heifers who experienced heat stress in utero are born with larger adrenal glands with altered microstructure. Dr. Laporta describes some of the DNA methylation that has been observed in these heifers. The panel discusses whether the response would be similar for other types of stressors, like cold stress or social stress. (26:19)What can we do to mitigate these impacts? Cooling dry cows so they can thermoregulate during gestation is critical. Altering diets to account for heat stress is also an important strategy. Unfortunately, there is no magic bullet to “fix” cows who were exposed to heat stress in utero, but these negative implications can be prevented. Dr. Laporta has also focused on what she calls perinatal programming - after the calf is born, what can we do? She has been working to develop cooling mechanisms for calves and is interested in further investigating early life mammary development. (33:41)When a dry cow experiences heat stress, she has fewer and smaller alveoli. Daughters of those cows have smaller udders with altered tissue growth. Granddaughters of those cows have fewer estrogen receptors in their udders and negative impacts on mammary proliferation. (44:30)Panelists share their take-home thoughts. Ryan and Cindy roll on, hitting the Judgment Day 2000 PPV. In this edition we go to Louisville for a nice six match card, culminating in a classic Iron Man match. Among the topics we discuss: Focus on how the upper card is still the McMahon Helmsley Faction taking on the Rock and Friends.  The evolution of Edge & Christian into full pretty-boy heels and their budding friendship with Kurt Angle to form Team ECK.  Too Cool and Rikishi taking on the mantle of big show openers.  The continued growth of Eddie Guerrero along his Mamacita.  Fun garbage brawl between Shane McMahon and Big Show. The Intercontinental Title hot potato between Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit, culminating in a Submission match. X-Pac and Road Dogg, still being confused for main eventers, take on the Dudley Boys in a table match and need Gerald Brisco's help to gain a victory. The Rock and Triple H face off in an Iron Man match, with Shawn Michaels and his booty shorts refereeing.  The psychology of the Iron Man match and how it stacks up against previous Iron Man matches.   The Undertaker returns and looks a bit different.  KId Rock lending the Undertaker his new theme music, his performance on Raw and Cindy learning about Joe C. All this and much more. Enjoy!

He has extensive background in international and community development, having conducted developmental work in several countries. He has published articles and book chapters on community engagement, and he co-edited a book on partnership and collaboration which was published in 2020. Henry is a native of the Central American nation of Belize. We begin the conversation discussing what it is like there, Belize's history as a young nation, and it's tremendous ecological and human diversity. Belize has the world's second longest coral reef after Australia, and Henry shares how it is now being endangered because of contamination flowing down from Florida. It is also a place where the economy and a lot of government policy is driven by Ecotourism and protecting the environment is a national priority. Belize is also a host country for the U.S. Peace Corps, and Henry shares his experience getting to know Peace Corps Volunteers there. He argues that the Peace Corps is the most valuable investment the U.S. makes in international diplomacy. We conclude by discussing Henry's work with Community Engagement at UofL, which has been recognized nationally. Today's Headlines: Representative Gerry Connolly of Virginia passed away at 75 from esophageal cancer, just weeks after announcing he would not seek re-election and being named the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee. Meanwhile, President Trump hosted South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, derailing trade discussions by screening a video alleging a white genocide in South Africa—claims Ramaphosa rejected. This comes as the administration continues to deport refugees from numerous countries while welcoming white Afrikaners. Separately, the DOJ has launched a criminal investigation into Andrew Cuomo over his COVID-era decisions as governor, raising suspicions of political motives ahead of his likely NYC mayoral bid against Eric Adams, whose own federal charges were recently dropped. The DOJ also announced it will dismiss police reform consent decrees in Louisville and Minneapolis and rescind earlier findings against the Phoenix Police Department, effectively reversing major civil rights investigations. Finally, a federal judge found the Trump administration in violation of a court order after it deported migrants—most not from South Sudan—to South Sudan, only for the flight to be rerouted to Djibouti, again without legal basis. The Trump administration is ending federal oversight of police departments through consent decrees in Minneapolis and Louisville. Those are the locations of the high-profile police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor five years ago that captured the nation's attention on the issue. President Trump's Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon says these consent decrees have been taking policing control away from local communities and turning it over to “un-elected bureaucrats.” Former federal prosecutor Jim Trusty joins the Rundown to discuss police oversight since the summer of 2020 and the battle over the Trump administration's latest deportation enforcement plans. The unofficial start of the summer travel season is this weekend, but the Federal Aviation Administration predicts that a record number of people will fly on Tuesday. From his upbringing in Portland, Louisville, to the pivotal moments that led him to a 20-year career in law enforcement, Mattingly recounts the intensity of working narcotics, shifting street dynamics, and the mental toll of policing a city on edge. We go deep into the night of the raid, what the warrant said, how entry unfolded, and the seconds before the first shot. Mattingly discusses the aftermath: public outrage, personal trauma, and even a $50,000 bounty placed on officers' heads. He also reflects on the broader failures of law enforcement training, public perception, and media framing.  Guest bio: John Mattingly is a retired Louisville Metro Police Sergeant with over 20 years in law enforcement, including high-risk narcotics work and undercover ops. He is the author of 12 Seconds in the Dark, his firsthand account of the Breonna Taylor raid.  SUPPORT THE ZACH SHOW BY SUBSCRIBING TO THE ZACH SHOW 2.0 (BONUS EPISODES & EXCLUSIVE CONTENT): https://auxoro.supercast.com/ JOHN MATTINGLY LINKS: 12 Seconds In The Dark: https://bit.ly/3H2dYQ3Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sgtmattingly/Website: https://johnmattingly.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/p/Sgt-Mattingly THE ZACH SHOW LINKS: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/auxoroYouTube: https://bit.ly/3CLjEqFNewsletter: https://therealzachwrites.substack.com/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@auxoropod To support the show, please leave a review on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
