In this episode of Kentucky History & Haunts, we trace the remarkable life of Dr. St. Elmo Brady, a Louisville-born chemist, educator, and civil rights pioneer whose influence reached far beyond the laboratory. Born in 1884 amid flooding, segregation, and racial inequality, Brady rose to become the first Black American to earn a Ph.D. in chemistry and one of the most important scientific educators of the 20th century. From Central Colored High School in Louisville to Fisk University, Tuskegee Institute, Howard University, and beyond, Brady's life was defined by curiosity, service, and an unshakable belief in education as a tool for progress. Along the way, he forged relationships with Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver, built chemistry departments from the ground up, delivered lectures that blended science, faith, and social responsibility, and mentored generations of students. This episode also explores the deeply personal moments of Brady's life, including devastating loss, tireless travel, and his lifelong commitment to teaching and research, even into his final years. Though his name is often overlooked in popular histories, his legacy quietly shapes American science and education to this day.If you enjoyed this episode, consider leaving a rating or review on your podcast app. It helps more people find the show and supports independent history storytelling.Venmo: https://account.venmo.com/u/kyhistoryhauntsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/kyhistoryhauntsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/kyhistoryhauntsSend Jessie mail:Jessie Bartholomew9115 Leesgate RdSuite ALouisville KY 40222Have a Kentucky story you'd like to hear explored? In Drama of Democracy: Political Representation in Mumbai (U Minnesota Press, 2025), Lisa Björkman invites our attention to political form and how they allow us to appreciate the various mediums through which representation is negotiated. Drawing on a decade of research in the city of Mumbai closely following the movements of corporation election candidates, protesting crowds, political rally organisers, and social workers, the book maps the linguistic, visual, sonic, and semiotic tools used to construct the spectacle of democracy. It asks: how does the figure of the crowd subvert what euromodern conceptions of political representation? How do films and their constructions of the public, the organising of rallies, election season cash flows, garlanding, placards and slogans in protests inform new meanings of representation? Through this richly engaging and genre-breaking work, Bjorkman offers new ways – originating from Mumbai – to explain the reorganisation of political authority around the world. Lisa Björkman is an Associate Professor in Urban and Public Affairs at the University of Louisville. She is the author of Pipe Politics, Contested Waters: Embedded Infrastructures of Millennial Mumbai, Waiting Town: Life in Transit and Mumbai's Other World-Class Histories, and Bombay Brokers. Lisa is also a research associate at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle. Raghavi Viswanath is a postdoctoral researcher and teaching fellow at SOAS, University of London. Her research, supported by the Leverhulme Trust, examines how pastoralists claim grazing rights under India's Forest Rights Act 2006 and how the everyday processes of staking such claims has been impacted by the authoritarian turn in India. LinkedIn. Imagine a 6'2 lefty sniper who can shoot you out of a zone, drop 38 in a revenge game, and still tell you she doesn't need Hollywood — she just needs her people. That's Bella Ragone.Georgia High School Player of the Year. Top 25 in the Class of 2026. Five-star recruit. Notre Dame women's basketball signee. And in this episode of SportsLifeTalk – You Got Next (Savage Season), Bella opens up about her journey from NFL sidelines to Georgia hardwood greatness — and why loyalty and faith shaped her rise.Bella's life wasn't built in one zip code. With her dad coaching in the NFL, moving was normal. She's lived in Louisville, Tennessee, Virginia/D.C., Chicago, Georgia, and even around Los Angeles. But when her dad joined the Rams and relocated to L.A., Bella made a defining decision — she stayed in Georgia. Not for spotlight. For stability. As she said, “I just need my people.” That mindset reveals everything about her foundation. Her basketball story didn't start with hype. She played multiple sports growing up. But in middle school, it clicked. She realized she was good. She loved the grind. She wasn't burning out. That's when the game became serious.Bella calls herself a “three-way player.” Translation: true three-level scorer. She takes pride in her jump shot — deep range, quick release, and a deadly one-dribble pull-up. As a lefty, she naturally creates angles defenders struggle with. Over the past two years, she's extended her range and sharpened her off-the-bounce scoring. When teams tried zone? She smiled and said, “That wasn't a good idea.”Her defining moment came in the region tournament. Third matchup against a team that had already beaten them twice. Home floor. Pressure packed. Bella decided, “This has to be my game.” Final stat line — 38 points while her team scored 50 total. She carried them into the region championship and delivered one of the coldest performances of the season. That wasn't stat padding. That was ownership. Her commitment to Notre Dame women's basketball wasn't based on rankings. It was about fit, faith, academics, and relationships. A Catholic university aligned with her values. A culture built on family. Coaches who invested in her as a person. She's joining a special freshman class — and she knows it.The basketball DNA runs deep. Her mom played Division I at Louisville after moving from Estonia at 15 and learning a new language. Bella wears #5 in honor of her mom's jersey number. Her dad, also a lefty, trained her and sharpened her competitive edge. Add in a Division I quarterback brother, and you get a household built on competition and discipline. When NIL opportunities came up, Bella didn't overthink it. She said Lululemon. Authentic. Clean. Real. That kind of clarity matters in today's NIL era.Off the court, she keeps it grounded — spending time with friends, supporting other sports, traveling, and protecting her energy. Her favorite local food spot? Buffalo's. Order: Kickin' Chicken Wrap. Simple comfort.During SLT Initiation, her Top 5 artists included Drake, SZA, Zach Bryan, Morgan Wallen, and Kendrick Lamar. Favorite superhero? Black Widow — independent and powerful. Theme song? “Over” by Drake. The biggest lesson basketball taught her? Resilience — pushing through fatigue and pressure when it would be easier to fold.Right now, Bella's focus is healing, staying healthy, and preparing for her freshman season at Notre Dame. Long-term goals? Win a national championship. Earn individual accolades. Bring a title back to South Bend. Her words were clear: “We deserve it.”Bella Ragone didn't choose the spotlight. She chose stability. She didn't chase hype. She built foundation. She's not just next. She's built.

After one bender too many, one doghouse too many, Paddy Gallagher decided enough was enough. He was quitting the gargle for good. But when he made that decision, he never really expected what would follow – a boxing comeback. However that's exactly what's going down, with the Pat Man ready to return now at the Waterfront, Belfast on February 27. He's been out of the ring since 2019 so there's bound to be some ringrust to shake off, and he'll need to rediscover his timing in there – not that he ever had any to begin with, he jokes. The Rocky Road spends a savage hour with the West Belfast boxer, going over his great amateur career that culminated in Commonwealth glory in India in 2010, turning professional in the Carl Frampton era, tournament boxing in Prizefighter and at the WBC World Invitational in Louisville, and becoming close with Gary Murray, who nearly lost his life after a fight with today's interviewee. Now 36, Gallagher outlines his short-term ambitions in the sport and tells us why he's been inspired by the feats of fellow Belfast men Anthony Cacace and Lewis Crocker during his absence. We also delve into the psychology of the comeback, and the alternative - leaving your dreams behind when you feel you could've done just a little bit more. Join Robert 'Big Shot Bob' Horry and the crew for episode 123 of the 'Shoot Around,' as they dive into some engaging NBA discussions, personal stories, and audience questions. Robert kicks off the episode by announcing a week-long break as he heads to Orlando for a family vacation at the new Epic Universe park. The show's first major topic centers around the widely rumored NBA expansion cities, Vegas and Seattle, and the crew debates other potential cities deserving of a franchise such as Louisville, St. Louis, and Kansas City. They also discuss the nostalgia and business side of bringing back the Seattle Supersonics name and branding if the team returns to the league.   Shifting gears, the conversation pivots to Denver Nuggets' star Nikola Jokic and his chase for the all-time triple-double record. The panel reflects on Jokic surpassing Oscar Robertson to secure the second position and ponders his ability to catch up to the current leader, Russell Westbrook. The focus also turns to the Chicago Bulls and their recent trades, which have left fans perplexed due to the lack of first-round draft picks received in return. The discussion delves into the value and potential of players like DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, and Lonzo Ball.   Finally, the crew answers a variety of listener questions including the feasibility of G-League players returning to college ball, the challenges of adjusting to professional sports, and the weirdest movies they’ve ever seen. They share thoughts on the NCAA's stance on player eligibility, the differences between college and professional basketball environments, and their bewildering movie experiences. This episode is packed with robust debates, entertaining anecdotes, and insightful NBA analysis, making it a must-watch for basketball enthusiasts.   00:00 Introduction and Programming Note 01:20 NBA Expansion Cities Discussion 04:51 Jokic's Triple-Double Milestone 06:27 Chicago Bulls Trade Analysis 10:14 Listener Questions and Alabama Basketball Controversy 12:09 Debate on College vs. G League Development 14:28 The Impact of NIL on College Sports 17:41 Coaches' Perspectives on Returning Players 19:41 Weirdest Movies We've Ever Seen

What if it's too late? If you've ever looked at your marriage, your relationship with your kids, or your past mistakes and thought, "I'm too far gone," this episode is for you.   In Part 5 of our From Overwhelmed to Intentional series, Kent and Lawson talk to the dad who feels discouraged, stuck, or haunted by guilt. You'll hear why it's so dangerous to add "forever" to temporary pain, how to stop speaking hopelessness over your home, and what it looks like to do the slow work of rebuilding trust. You can't control someone else's heart, but you can do your part to create the kind of environment where healing can grow.   Even when it may feel like things have veered too far off the tracks, God has a plan to redeem. You can move forward, even from here.   Want to shape the direction of the show this year? This marks his longest gap between projects, nearly three years since Jackman (2023), which peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard 200.The announcement dropped February 10, 2026, via Instagram, featuring striking cover art: a motion-blurred image of Harlow in sunglasses and a tilted brown cap, eyes closed, evoking a dreamlike, in-motion aesthetic. Vinyl pre-orders are live now, backed by Atlantic Records.Monica was written and recorded over the past year at the iconic Electric Lady Studios in New York City following Harlow's relocation from Louisville. The legendary venue—home to sessions for Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Stevie Wonder, and more—hints at a fresh creative chapter and potential sonic evolution. In a March 2025 Zane Lowe interview, Harlow previewed the project, expressing intent to "transcend" past work and take longer for something distinct. Details on tracklist, features, and sound direction remain under wraps, leaving fans speculating on whether it continues Jackman's introspective vibe or pivots toward commercial anthems like his "Lovin on Me" era.Recent activity includes the 2025 single "Just Us" with Doja Cat, plus tracks like "Set You Free." Celebrity nods from Victor Cruz and Karl-Anthony Towns, plus overlapping studio moments (Lorde praised Harlow's reaction to her work), add buzz.Join me, Analytic Dreamz, on this segment of Notorious Mass Effect for a concise breakdown of the announcement, key stats, development timeline, and what this birthday-timed rollout means for Jack Harlow's career pivot.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/donationsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

TALK TO ME, TEXT ITHeadlines said Olympic medals were breaking, and that was all it took to spark jokes and outrage. We looked closer. The real story is a safety-minded breakaway clasp designed to prevent strangulation, a trade-off that makes sense once you know it exists. When organizers bury the explanation, people assume failure instead of intent, and a protective feature becomes a viral punchline. From there we turn to a sobering cautionary tale: a food influencer who reportedly died after eating a toxic “devil crab.” We unpack how reef species can harbor lethal neurotoxins like saxitoxin and tetrodotoxin, why cooking doesn't neutralize every threat, and how the chase for novelty online can outpace basic risk checks. This isn't about scolding curiosity—it's about understanding biology's hard lines and why identification, local expertise, and skepticism save lives. We close with hope and a wagging tail. A collie mix caught the attention of Louisville officers and led them straight to a missing three-year-old locked inside a car. The dog's persistence, paired with calm, practical coaching from police, turned a terrifying moment into a reunion. It's a reminder that instincts—human and animal—can bridge critical minutes when it matters most.Throughout, we thread a common theme: risk, design, and communication. Whether it's an engineered clasp, a dangerous delicacy, or an urgent search, outcomes depend on how well we explain intent, respect limits, and listen for signals that cut through the noise. If this mix of myth-busting, safety insight, and a true rescue story resonates with you, follow along, share the episode with a friend, and leave a quick review so others can find it. I'm trying to decide what I should do this weekend. Work on the lawn? Or take the Harley out for a spin. Gonna be in the mid-50's on Saturday and maybe I'll just do both. In the news this morning, the latest on the death of James Van Der Beek, an update on the search for Savannah Guthrie's mom, an airport got closed yesterday because of a party balloon, and a deadly school shooting in Canada. Bunch of Olympic stuff this morning including an updated medal count, the latest on Lindsey Vonn, and what are people Googling about the Winter Games? It's Hypothetical Thursday, so we asked each other some hypothetical questions. Brian asked Jean: "What was the most unhinged thing you ever did in a relationship?" Jean asked Brian: "Would you rather be hangry all the time or hot & sweaty all the time?" And of course, Office Cora joined us to talk about what she's up to in the 715 this weekend. In sports, the Bucks beat the Magic last night before the NBA All-Star break, the Badgers take on Michigan State tomorrow night, Kyle Busch wins the pole for this weekend's Daytona 500, and some big suspensions in the NBA after a fight between the Hornets & Pistons. Valentine's Day is coming up this weekend and 82% of people think it's a fake holiday that was made-up to encourage people to spend money. And speaking of money, we looked at how much people are spending on V-Day this year. We talked about what's on TV today/tonight. Remember the Australian kid who saved his family after they got blown out to sea? Well, the cops just released more details about the incident along with some audio from the kid's 911 call. A dog in Louisville helped cops find a missing three year-old. And a former professor at the University of Wisconsin is in the news after a bunch of his former students got postcards from him after he passed away. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a beehive thief, a surge in fake IDs due to the popularity of A.I., a landlord in Green Bay who was allegedly trading sex for rent, a guy in Sacramento who stole some beehives, a mom who injected fecal matter into her own child's IV at the hospital, and a jewelry thief who used a forklift to rob a store and a donkey to escape.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
