Policing and police reform have had a particularly bright spotlight on them in recent years, and the Louisville Metro Police Department has gotten more than its share of attention. At one point, Louisville aspired to “model city” status when it came to policing. Five years later, the killing of Breonna Taylor and then David McAtee stamped out that hope, as the relationship between LMPD and Louisville's Black communities became even more fractured. A new season of Louisville Public Media's podcast, “Dig,” explores that. In a joint KyCIR/Newsy investigation, insiders and documents reveal the systemic barriers and choices made by city leaders and LMPD that led to its failure to meaningfully change. This week on “In Conversation” host Rick Howlett talked with those who made the podcast and who are a part of what “Dig” explores.

Tired of pretentious music? Are you looking to just have fun and rock out? The good-time, make-you-move-and-groove medicine you're after is what White Reaper dispenses. The band's core was formed in 2012 when Louisville high schoolers Tony Esposito (guitar/vocals) and Nick Wilkerson (drums) started jamming as a duo. Then Nick recruited his twin brother Sam (bass) and Esposito added friend Ryan Hater (keys). And the fearsome foursome released their rowdy, ripping 2015 debut, White Reaper Does It Again, on Polyvinyl Records. Carrying forward their blend of lo-fi garage rock and pop-punk hooks, the quartet added second guitarist Hunter Thompson in 2016, before recording 2017's (tongue-in-cheek) The World's Best American Band. The glee blossomed with shinier, poppier melodies that soared over harmonized guitars—think crossing Cheap Trick with Thin Lizzy. The World's Best American Band graduated them to major label Elektra, where they earned studio time with producer Jay Joyce (Cage the Elephant, Halestorm, Eric Church, Carrie Underwood, Emmylou Harris). With Joyce providing a slicker, tighter sound, the quintet unveiled an even catchier package that employs the sheen of peak Cars and early Maroon 5 in danceable tracks like "Might Be Right" and "Eggplant." (The former earned them a No. 1 slot on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart.) But rock purists still got to stomp and howl with the hard drivin' "Headwind" and redlining "Raw." Hours before their headlining gig at Nashville's Exit/In, White Reaper's Esposito and Thompson checked in with PG to talk tone. The guitar duo showed us how the rigors of the road have impacted their touring gear decisions and why COVID-19 handcuffed one of them to the digital life. Orlando City returned to the pitch on Saturday after a two-week layoff and while it would be wrong to say the Lions didn't miss a beat, they at least captured all three vital points in a road match-up with FC Cincinnati. The win was a lot more difficult than it needed to be, due in part to the Lions' play in the second half and partly due to no one being able to look at a monitor long enough to see whether Tesho Akindele's crossbar ricochet fully crossed the line (we certainly thought so), but winning in a place the team has never previously won is always good. We break down the win and make our Man of the Match selections. We also dive a little into the USMNT's crucial win over Costa Rica and how Gregg Berhalter's team is positioned in the Octagonal after the close of the international window. The Orlando Pride played twice since our last show and things did not go well. The Pride will not be heading to the postseason after dropping games in Chicago and Louisville. The team has little to play for with one match remaining in what turned into a disappointing season after the Pride had sat atop the table at the one-third-season mark. We discuss the two matches and dive into what Ian Fleming and the Pride brass have to do to get this team to the next level. This week's mailbag gave us a lot of work to do on deciding which eight teams we think will make the MLS postseason from the Eastern Conference. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. We close the show with our key match-ups and score predictions for Orlando City vs. Montreal tonight and vs. New England on Sunday. That's all for this week. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 268 went down: 0:15 - Junior Urso's goal was just enough to keep Orlando's unbeaten run going Saturday and now the competition gets tougher even if it is at home. Plus, Berhalter's got the USMNT in a good spot so let's just see how things play out. 31:56 - The Pride are toast for 2021 and so they will spend the postseason at home yet again. Changes are coming for this team. Plus, our mailbag and our keys to the next two matches as well as our score predictions. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

We've covered a number of legends and folk tales throughout the first two seasons of this series. From buried treasure in a Southern Illinois Cave, to mystery stalkers, and haunted insane asylums - we've chatted about quite a bit. This week's show has some of that classic spookiness, but one thing is not an urban legend - the fact that several people have hit by trains while looking for a mysterious "Goat Man" in Louisville Kentucky. What is the legend of the Pope Lick Monster, and will the body count ever stop rising? These aren't your standard ghost stories - these are the Mysteries of The Ohio Valley.

Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here To Rate and Review New! Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKdeO4IodggpSLyhWVdcWKw Episode Details: Derrick A. Pope, Managing Director of the Arc of Justice Institute and host of the Hidden Legal Figures Podcast, returns to discuss the landmark Civil Rights decisions in Buchanan v. Warley (1917) and Shelley v. Kraemer (1948). On today's episode, learn about the significance of each case and how the two decisions are intimately related. Preparing to celebrate its 104th anniversary in November 2021, the unanimous U.S. Supreme Court decision in Buchanan v. Warley ruled that Louisville, Kentucky's residential segregation laws were unconstitutional and violated the personal and property rights afforded to all U.S. citizens by the 14th Amendment. Chief Justice Edward Douglass White upheld the rights of whites and Blacks to sell property to one another and initiated a turning point in the Court's attitude toward the rights of African Americans. Years later, private covenants -- not laws -- were being used to segregate neighborhoods. In 1948, Chief Justice Fred M. Vinson ruled in Shelley v. Kraemer that private covenant agreements do not violate 14th Amendment rights and that the state's enforcement of discriminatory private covenants does violate the 14th Amendment. This ruling made racial discrimination in housing no longer judicially enforceable and established a legal precedent for future efforts to enforce the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clause. Boston College quarterback Dennis Grosel has become a lightning rod after two straight losses. The replacement for Phil Jurkovec has been inconsistent and has made plays that have cost the Eagles. On today's show we talk about BC's quarterback situation, and whether Jeff Hafley should listen to the online mob that wants his quarterback bench. What would a move like that mean for the Eagles? And realistically, moving on to a QB like Daelen Menard or Emmet Moread, what would that mean? We talk about that all, as BC prepares for Louisville. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! On a rainy night in June, 2010, a 911 call would set off one of the biggest murder scandals to shock Louisville, Kentucky. Two men, living in a crumbling Victorian mansion in Old Louisville, both accused each other of killing a man they had buried in the old wine cellar. The ensuing trials transfixed locals with talk of kinky sex, drugs, counterfeit money, guns and a sledge hammer. As we previously reported at The Real News, voters in Berlin were recently faced with a game-changing referendum to expropriate housing held by giant corporate landlords who have made the city increasingly unaffordable for most residents. The passing of the referendum, and the organizing that made it possible, was not only a shock but a source of hope for many around the world who have seen options for affordable housing gobbled up by vampire capitalists and large companies contributing to the runaway financialization of the housing market. How were Berliners able to take on these big landlords and pass this historic referendum? What happens now? And can Berlin provide a model for those fighting for housing justice around the world? In this segment of The Marc Steiner Show, Marc speaks with longtime TRNN contributor Molly Shah and Berlin-based activist Ian Clotworthy about the recent referendum and the great global housing struggle to come. Ian Clotworthy is from Ireland and has lived in Berlin for about 10 years; he is active in DW Enteignen (where he represents the Right2TheCity group), DSA Berlin, and the Green New Deal for Europe. Kyle Worley is joined by Dr. Gregg Allison to answer the question, did Martin Luther have anything to say about the righteousness of God in Romans?Questions Covered in This Episode:Did Martin Luther have anything to say about the righteousness of God in Romans?Outside of the miraculous work of the Holy Spirit, was there anything that was happening at a linguistic or a theological level in Luther's understanding of the concept that was the key to that discovery? How did that change happen?Helpful Definitions:Justice of God: God's wrath and condemnation towards sinners.Righteousness of God: A gift that God gives to sinners who repent, confess Christ, turn to Christ through the gospel. A gift of perfect standing before God. God's gift of the righteousness of Christ by which we can stand before him.Justification: Divine declaration. We are no longer condemned or guilty, we are forgiven of our sins and the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ is attributed to us. So God when he sees us, sees us clothed in the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ. The Sweet Exchange: Our sin is imputed to Christ, Christ's righteousness is imputed to us.Guest Bio:Dr. Gregg Allison is a professor of Christian Theology at Southern Seminary. Prior to joining the faculty of Southern, Dr. Allison was a professor at Western Seminary, and prior to that He served with campus crusade for Christ for 18 years, was a missionary in Italy and Switzerland.
