In this episode, Nole and Kevin jump straight in with an urgent call to action for everyone to sign up for the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. The guys then dive into a compelling discussion about the book "The Rescuer" by Jason Sautel, exploring the idea that first responders leave a piece of themselves on every call. This leads to a broader conversation about professionalism, personal accountability, and the internal battle between doing what you know is right versus taking the easy way out, whether that's cleaning the station bathrooms or avoiding the endless dopamine chase of "doomscrolling." They touch on proactive mental health, the tools they use to stay grounded, and the simple but powerful act of mentorship. Finally, Nole shares his latest bio-hacking experiment: mouth taping for better sleep.Key Topics & Timestamps(00:13) - Urgent Call to Action: Sign up for the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb now!(02:01) - Book Discussion: "The Rescuer" by Jason Sautel.(02:20) - The concept of leaving a piece of yourself on every call.(04:00) - The profound impact of small, professional acts on the people we serve.(06:49) - The "Shopping Cart Theory" and the importance of doing what's right when no one is watching.(08:45) - The trap of doomscrolling and its effect on being present with family.(11:05) - Understanding social media as an addiction to dopamine hits.(14:30) - How reading "The Rescuer" brought up uncomfortable emotions and memories of traumatic calls.(17:25) - Using the HALT (Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired) method and the value of proactive mental health check-ins.(19:25) - The constant battle of feeding the "good dog" versus the "bad dog."(20:10) - The common struggle of knowing what to do for self-improvement but failing to execute.(23:10) - Kevin discusses his sobriety and why alcohol isn't a viable coping tool for him.(25:36) - Nole provides an update on his journey of quitting nicotine.(28:00) - The power of fatherhood, mentorship, and positive male role models in the fire service.(36:00) - Nole shares a tool for starting difficult but important conversations.(38:32) - Mouth Taping: Nole's deep dive into using "Hostage Tape" for better sleep.(45:55) - Final details and push for the 5th Annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb.Resources MentionedEvent: 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb RegistrationBook: "The Rescuer" by Jason SautelBible Verse: James 4:17Sleep Aid: Hostage Tape, 3M Micropore TapeHealth Service: Function Health Blood Tests (for County employees)Send us an email: thefireupprogram@gmail.comSign up for a class at The Fire Up Program! The Fire You Carry Instagram.

Welcome back to another episode of Not Woody Actually — where we go somewhat off the rails and discuss things even more loosely related to Woody Allen than our Adjacent series. In this episode, Don takes a solo deep-dive into a long-overdue topic: Patrick McGilligan's 2025 biography of Woody Allen, A Travesty of a Mockery of a Sham. This is no light read — we're talking 848 pages or 34 hours on Audible of dense, detailed Woody Allen history. But it might just be the most comprehensive biography of Allen ever written not by the man himself. Don lightly unpacks the book's tone, structure, strengths, and shortcomings — and shares a few surprising insights along the way. With help from our trusty AI Assistant, we introduce the author, explore the book's critical reception, and — as a bonus — Don reveals how reading Sham led him to a rare, long-forgotten Woody Allen biography… which in turn became a side project that true fans will definitely appreciate. We also want to apologize to those of you who've been waiting a while for this discussion. As mentioned in the intro, James and Don have been deep in conversation about the podcast's future — and that made this the perfect moment to release this solo recording instead of another Adjacent episode. We hope you enjoy this shorter-than-usual but long-awaited episode — and if you've read Sham or have thoughts of your own, we'd love to hear from you. Drop your comments in our special tracked comment section linked below. Thanks, as always, for your continued support and patience.

What happens when the gospel you were handed no longer makes sense of the pain, beauty, or complexity of the world you're actually living in? In this conversation, I sit down with Nicholas McDonald, pastor and author of The Light in Our Eyes, to explore the tensions between disillusionment and hope, escape and embodiment, cynicism and renewal. Nicholas brings a pastor's heart, a theologian's depth, and the honesty of someone who's wrestled with real questions and has found the freedom, beauty, and love that Jesus can bring. We talk about what 40 million people walking away from the church actually means, why so many are rejecting not Jesus, but a culture of fear and power, and how the recovery of ancient practices, communal faith, and a more embodied gospel could help us reimagine the way forward. From Zechariah's silence to Jim Henson's Muppets, from dispensational escape theology to communion as resistance - this conversation covers a lot of ground, and all of it matters. So join us as we find the light of Christ has been present all along.Nicholas McDonald is the Associate Pastor at Redeemer Presbyterian church in central Indianapolis and has served in ministry for over fifteen years. His previous positions have included roles in youth ministry and four years as the Campus Minister of Reformed University Fellowship at the University of Missouri. McDonald received his degree from Gordon Conwell Seminary and studied creative writing at Oxford University. He's the author of Faker, and the forthcoming book "The Light in Our Eyes: Rediscovering the Love, Beauty and Freedom of Jesus in an Age of Disillusionment". We are living in a world that seems to be unraveling at the seams - where chaos, polarization, and anxiety have become our default settings - we need a different way of being. Today, I'm sitting down with Eric Clayton, who's been wrestling with the question: What if peace isn't just the absence of conflict, but a transformative way of living? Eric's new book, "Finding Peace Here and Now," isn't another self-help manual. It's an invitation - a roadmap drawn from Ignatian spirituality that challenges us to look deeper. How do we build peace when everything around us seems designed to tear us apart? How do we find stillness in the storm, not by escaping the world, but by showing up differently? We'll explore how peace starts within us, how it's cultivated through compassion, creativity, and a willingness to see the humanity in everyone - even those we disagree with. This isn't about being passive. It's about a strength so profound it can disarm violence without raising a hand. If you're feeling overwhelmed, if you're searching for hope in a world that seems to have lost its way, this conversation is for you. So join us as we walk through what peace really means. Eric Clayton is an award-winning writer and author of three books on Ignatian spirituality and everyday living, including, "Finding Peace Here and Now: How Ignatian Spirituality Leads Us to Healing and Wholeness," "My Life with the Jedi: The Spirituality of Star Wars," and "Cannonball Moments: Telling Your Story, Deepening Your Faith." He has a children's book, "Our Mother, Too: Mary Embraces the World," which was co-authored by Shannon K. Evans releasing this year. Eric is the deputy director for communications at the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States where he manages the award-winning weekly column, "Now Discern This," guest hosts "AMDG: A Jesuit Podcast" and provides filming, writing and audio support for a range of multimedia projects. Today, we're getting into the raw, unvarnished terrain of human longing - that aching space where despair meets unexpected grace. I'm excited to welcome back David Zahl on the podcast. He isn't here to offer another self-help platitude, but to explore something far more profound: how we find relief in a world that constantly demands more, faster, better.
