Wondering where your favorite podcast about Connecticut’s startup ecosystem has been? Well, we’ve been busier than ever, revamping and reworking our podcast to delve deeper into the Nutmeg State’s fledgling startup community. Over the summer, Eric, Dave, and Mike invited me to join their startup about startups and to help expand their reach across this great state. Who am I? My name is Chris DeMorro, and I’m (surprise) a startup founder of my own, specifically digital marketing with a focus on (drumroll please) startups. I’ve spent the past 10 years working at every level for several startups, and now I’m helping local companies and non-profits implement the right strategies for presenting themselves to the world. That’s about all I’m comfortable writing about myself for now, because this podcast isn’t about me. It’s about Connecticut’s young-but-growing startup community, and going forward we’ll continue to interview founders and policy-makers, but we’ll also be adding roundtable discussions, written content, a renewed emphasis on social media, and more live events. Most importantly, however, is we want more interaction from you. We want you to give us your opinions, thoughts, and comments on the topic du jour, as well as suggestions on what you’d like to see more of. Give us your feedback, positive or negative, on our show, Connecticut, and the startup community as a whole. Going forward, we’re going to take a harder look at both sides of the startup community, the benefits and drawbacks, and what it is really contributing to our economy. We may love Connecticut, but it’s no secret that this isn’t the most business-friendly state, and everybody has their own ideas on how to fix it. So welcome back to the new CT Startup Podcast, and enjoy the first of many new episodes we have in store for you.
In this week's second episode of Cleantech Talk, Chris DeMorro and I kick off the show by talking about an Edmunds study released on Earth Day that illogically bunched plug-in electric cars with conventional hybrids (and bashed them). I get a little worked up. We also talk about why electric cars are great first cars for teenagers, and why they love them. We go from there to another fun one about a Bosch autopilot video that features a Tesla Model S. And we close with a discussion about some electric car early adopters (true early adopters) who have been driving electric for at least a decade. Thanks to our friends at Plug In America for that one.
Chris DeMorro and Zachary Shahan discuss the BMW i5 and whether or not it's a "Tesla Model S competitor;" relatively high Volvo XC90 sales; the introduction of the Cadillac CT6 and GM's overall electrification push; and a story about how Elon Musk almost sold Tesla to Google for $11 billion in 2013.
This week's Cleantech Talk podcast was an especially interesting one, imho. The first story Chris DeMorro and I discussed was a particularly fun one because it's about the CEO of Cadillac, Johan de Nysschen, and Johan dropped several comments on Chris's article in response to the article. The short story is that Johan said in 2009 (when he was heading up Audi) that anyone who bought a Chevy Volt was an idiot. Now, he's the CEO of Cadillac, and the company is reportedly pulling the plug on the Cadillac ELR. I think you get the idea. Johan, however, jumped onto the Gas2 article (on a Sunday, no less) to defend himself and Cadillac's electric interest and ambitions. That led us into a discussion of the 2016 Chevy Malibu Hybrid, a car that is bigger than the Toyota Prius but has almost the same efficiency... and is largely based on the Chevy Volt drivetrain (despite not being a plug-in car). Of course, we got around to some Tesla news, talking about the Model S 70D, Tesla's current lineup, and Tesla's super controversial website pricing approach. Chris DeMorro of Gas2.org and Zachary Shahan of CleanTechnica.com and EVObsession.com interview Ian Wright (founder and CEO of Wrightspeed and founder of Tesla Motors) about Wrightspeed, Tesla, electric trucks, electric cars, and much more. Listen and enjoy!
This week's Cleantech Talk podcast is an "EV battery special." Chris DeMorro and Zachary Shahan talk about new research that highlights the fast-dropping price of electric vehicle batteries, the wide variation in the lifetimes of different lithium-ion battery cells, and Volkswagen's stake in solid-state battery startup QuantumScape. We started off the show chatting about new research highlighting a "hidden benefit" of EVs. Enjoy the show!
Chris DeMorro, director of Gas2.org, and Zachary Shahan, director of CleanTechnica.com and EVObsession.com, talk about the Apple self-driving electric car in light of recent snooping from Apple Insider, the Tesla Model 3 and electric vehicle range in light of recent comments made by Elon Musk of Tesla Motors, BYD gigafactories that can "rival" Tesla and Panasonic's coming battery gigafactory, BYD's electric vehicles, and the use of BYD e6 electric cars in an Uber fleet in Chicago.
In this episode of Cleantech Talk, Chris DeMorro and Zachary Shahan discuss an upcoming Tesla Motors announcement that is going to once and for all "end range anxiety" (via an over-the-air software update), as Tesla CEO, Chairman, & Product Architect Elon Musk tweeted; a soft launch of Tesla's new CPO program; the Dubai police force getting a $136,000 BMW i8; and Audi announcing that it is going to electrify all of its models.
Chris DeMorro and Zachary Shahan talk the Detroit Electric SP:01, February electric car sales in the United States, the Nissan GTR LM Nismo hybrid in testing, and how riding public transit can save you ~$10,000 a year.
