Big Booty Judi informs the boys that there are full societies dedicated to living life as a mermaid and the plus-sized ladies are owning it. Lou has become obsessed with the news about Diddy. Connecticut is the home to even more movies, Hallmark is filming two here right now. The Nutmeg State ranks the as the 7th worst driving state in America.
This morning Lou & Dave asked the listeners what the weirdest part of their job is and the answers were astonishing. One lady told a story about a rotting corpse in a family living room that was paying bills. Another woman who worked in an operating room once saw Tammy Wynette refuse treatment at the hospital and still walk out with a bottle of pain pills. Another guy who worked for IBM was tasked with finding an employee who stole a company vehicle. Is Connecticut Fun? The annual Fun States study made the Nutmeg State look awful. Actress Alicia Silverstone ate a poisonous fruit off a tree while live on TikTok. CT officials are warning of scams related to the recent flood. Why do cartoon characters usually have four fingers? The boys found the answer.
Kia ora e te whanau! This week Matt has the distinct privilege of speaking to Lee Grabarek. Lee (they/them) is a non-binary person who has been ripping it up on the trails and roads of Aotearoa for the last ten years, after travelling from Connecticut, where they enjoyed a very outdoorsy existence. Matt spoke to Lee about their life growing up, their initial foray into trail running and the sweet, sweet, sweet, transgression of wearing road shoes on the trail. We discuss Lee's attendance at Out Trails, a trail running retreat for queer and trans people, and the massive impact that this had on their life. Lee, who puts it elegantly, does not “think about my gender every second of every day” so what this conversation is mostly about is running, how unifying this is, and what work there is to do in the space. Lee is here to, in their words, “Send it” and will be competing at this year's Crater Rim 30km. This is a truly interesting conversation with a super-interesting runner. Did you know Connecticut was voted the number one state for hiking in the US? That's according to the Office of Tourism. So, it's no surprise that each year, the state hosts Connecticut Trails Day. It's a two-day event across the state offering more than 185 different opportunities to get out and explore the Nutmeg State. We spoke with Trails Day Coordinator, Chuck Toal, to talk about the history of Trails Day, what you can expect this year and why you should register sooner rather than later. In today's episode, we're talking to Natalie Sawicki, a songwriter from Los Angeles, who spent most of her life in Connecticut! She shares so much about this charming small state; you'll hear about the fall foliage, New England fashion, local delicacies and much more!Let's Discover “The Nutmeg State" with a local!Follow Natalie's work on Instagram @natsawicki. *****Connecticut is a small state. In fact, it's the third smallest state in the United States after Rhode Island and Delaware. For comparison, it's 5,543mi², making it just a tad bit bigger than Montenegro and about 14% bigger than Jamaica.Yet, where it lacks in size, it makes up for in population. 3.6 million people call Connecticut home, making it a state with one of the highest population densities in the country.Geographically, you'll find Connecticut surrounded by three other states: New York, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. From the Connecticut panhandle in the southwest corner, you can reach New York City by train in a matter of minutes. So what does it look like? Well, grab your camera! As a tourist in Connecticut, you're surrounded by lush greenery in the spring, warm oranges, reds and yellows in the fall and snow in the winter. Connecticut has four very distinct seasons. While the north is mountainous, part of the Appalachian Mountains are in the northwest corner, the entire state is covered in rolling hills and trees, making it picture-worthy year-round. Not to mention all of the rivers! The Connecticut River is one of the most famous. It's actually the reason Connecticut is called Connecticut, it comes from a local indigenous language, Mohegan-Pequot, and Connecticut means long tidal river. So whether you want to visit one of the many New England coastal communities, the impressive architecture of Yale University in New Haven, or the hustle and bustle of the capital, Hartford, you're in for a treat!Pick some local berries and apples while you're there, meet some locals and make the most of "The Nutmeg State."*****Premium Content: This episode is part of Season 3. You can catch her behind the desk weekdays from 5 to 7 a.m. and on Midday at 11 a.m. Yvonne has reported and anchored across the country for more than a decade and is so happy to be back in her home state. In her years with KVUE, Yvonne has been recognized numerous times by the Texas Associated Press for her anchoring. Born and raised in Laredo, Yvonne jumped into the business at the age of 18 when she started reporting for Telemundo. While attending the University of Texas at Austin, she graduated with degrees in broadcast journalism and business. During her senior year she was recognized by Hispanic Magazine for being an outstanding role model for Latinas. After graduating from UT, Yvonne got her first anchoring job at KACB in San Angelo, Texas. Her next move took her to KCBD in Lubbock, Texas, where she anchored the weekend evening news, covering everything from deadly tornadoes to the Columbia space shuttle disaster. After less than two years, she was off to Tennessee at WATE in Knoxville, where she helped launch the station's weekend morning newscast. Yvonne's journey through journalism then took her to the beaches of sunny South Florida. In 2005, she joined WPLG in Miami as a breaking news reporter and anchor. She covered everything from Fidel Castro to Hurricane Katrina. After Miami she was off to Connecticut where she anchored their weekday morning newscast and her days consisted of wall-to-wall coverage of massive blizzards instead of tropical storms. In the Nutmeg State, Yvonne was also named one of Hartford's Top 40 Under 40 which is given to people in Connecticut who are positive role models in the community. Her career highlights include traveling to rural Mexico, where she discovered contaminated vegetables were the cause of a Hepatitis A outbreak in East Tennessee. She also reported on the capture of Eric Rudolph, the Olympic Park bomber, in North Carolina. Outside of work, Yvonne enjoys being active in the community. She has volunteered with the American Parkinson's Disease Association, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and their Race for the Cure, the American Red Cross, the Lupus Foundation, the Salvation Army and Meals on Wheels. Yvonne enjoys mentoring young girls with GenAustin because she remembers how impressionable she was as that age. She believes it's important for young girls to know that they control their own destiny, which includes not only their career path, but their overall happiness as well. On the weekends, Yvonne loves to go exploring with all her boys -- her husband, Alex, and her sons. Together they like to go off the beaten path by going on road trips and visiting different museums and restaurants. And now that she is close to family, you can definitely add football tailgates and backyard barbecues to the list! Watch Yvonne every weekday morning and be sure to follow her on Instagram @yvonnefromkvue or on Twitter @YvonneN_KVUE

Law and urban planning professor and advocate Sara Bronin founded Desegregate CT to transform Connecticut's zoning laws from tools for racial exclusion to instruments of social change and sustainability. Widely viewed as the poster child of the “suburban state,” whose old, industrial cities and communities of color have suffered decades of neglect and disinvestment, Connecticut is wising up. Bronin thinks her state can teach the rest of us something useful, even visionary, about how to build sustainable, equitable communities through land use and zoning reform.Sara Bronin is a Mexican-American architect and attorney whose interdisciplinary research focuses on how law and policy can foster more equitable, sustainable, well-designed and connected places. As a leading voice on historic preservation law and related land use practices, Bronin was recently nominated by the Biden administration to chair the U.S. Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. Bronin has written over two dozen articles on renewable energy, climate change, housing, urban planning, transportation, real estate development, and federalism. Her forthcoming book, Key to the City (W.W. Norton Press), will explore how zoning rules rule our lives. Through the Legal Constructs Lab, she created the National Zoning Atlas to translate and standardize tens of thousands of zoning codes across the country. She has advised the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Sustainable Development Code, has served on the board of Latinos in Heritage Conservation, and founded Desegregate Connecticut. Bronin holds a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School, a master of science from the University of Oxford (Rhodes Scholar), as well as a B.Arch. and B.A. from the University of Texas–Austin.

In episode 18 of the Nutmeg State Transportation Report, we discuss an issue that we've been working on for a while, and need to continue to work on as an industry. That is workforce development. Our industry has a well-publicized shortage of truck drivers, and we need to work on recruiting new drivers to the industry. One of the ways we can do that is by passing legislation. I am pleased to have been involved in crafting CDL training legislation during the 2022 legislative session. Here today to talk about this are a couple of folks that I worked with. From an entity called Ameelio, they are Zo Orchingwa and Gabe Saruhashi.
