We continue talking about the Wisconsin Badgers decision to part ways with former head coach Paul Chryst. To start the show I wanted to talk about how appreciative I am and I think the fan-base should be for everything that Paul Chryst did during his tenure at Wisconsin. We talk about what the players are saying, everything Chryst accomplished and why he was such an easy guy to root for.We discuss some user comments, why Wisconsin won't be the next Nebraska, what are the expectations for Jim Leonard and why it might be unfair to expect him to change the direction of the team. We discuss why Wisconsin might be smart to get ahead the curve on the timing of this move despite the fact that it looks odd from the outside looking in.We finish by talking about if Wisconsin is a good job and why I don't think this recruiting class is the priority compared to making the right coaching decision.Today's show is brought to you by:SimpliSafe and BuiltBar Learn more about your ad choices. Wisconsin Badgers football head coach Paul Chryst has some head-scratching comments during his post-game press conference following the ugly loss to Washington State. We talk about his comments on the 4th down play as well as his comments about Graham Mertz on today's Locked On Badgers. Chryst was upset about his 4th down decision to go for it near mid-field, I would argue it was the right call and Chryst is learning the wrong lessons from what happened on that play. I'm worried he's going to get even more conservative.Chryst also had some odd comments regarding Graham Mertz pushing the ball downfield, and how perhaps he shouldn't have quite as much. I thought the downfield passing game was maybe the best part of the inconsistent Badgers attack and its odd that Chryst would take that opportunity in the press conference to question his QBs decision making. We also discuss the Badgers remaining games and what it would take for this to be considered a successful season. Is winning the Big Ten West enough ? Or do we need to see substantial offensive improvement? Is there any scenario where Paul Chryst is on the hot seat this season ?Today's show is brought to you by: Underdogfantasy.com. Wisconsin Badgers football fans should be excited to have Paul Chryst as their head coach, I break down three reasons why he's excellent and underrated.First, Chryst has elevated the recruiting profile in ways that previous coaches haven't been able to; this includes landing multiple five star players, Graham Mertz and a top-20 recruiting class at Wisconsin. We dive into his ability to make great coaching hires and build an excellent staff. I also think he deserves a ton of credit for keeping Dave Aranda and promoting Jim Leonard -- its these moves that have helped the defense maintain its elite level. Finally on Locked on Badgers we talk about maybe the most important part -- Paul Chryst never has bad teams. It may not always be sexy, but he's helped establish such a high floor at Wisconsin that going 8-5 seems like a disaster. Its easy to overlook, but Chryst has been excellent during his time in Madison. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Wisconsin Badgers football head coach Paul Chryst has been really good, but there are some issues that will need to be addressed for Wisconsin to take the next step. We talk about those issues on today's Locked On Badgers. In the first segment we discuss the issues with the Wisconsin passing game, and dive into QB recruiting, development and play calling. Why Paul Chryst has played a role in these issues and why I think the hiring of Bobby Engram might make a big difference in fixing it.Next we talk through some game management issues and PC's inability at times to find a more aggressive approach to play calling. Why this hurts Wisconsin and why Wisconsin's defense should make it easier to be aggressive from a playcalling standpoint. Finally we talk about PC's approach to playing bad teams and why it actually hurts the development and recruitment of Badgers quarterbacks. Paul Chryst is the head football coach at the University of Wisconsin. He's led the team to great heights, both on the field and off. Recognized as a leading mind in the game, Coach Chryst serves as a model from whom other coaches in Wisconsin and beyond can learn. In this episode of the SGG podcast, we discussed: 1. Shattering the backboard during a high school basketball game. 2. Noticing high school football programs that have organized “systems” and passion around their programs. 3. His impressions of the benefits and potential problems associated with the growing private coaching industry. 4. Being the “young guy in the staff room” for many of his formative years as a coach. 5. What he looks for when hiring young coaches. 6. How he organized all the coaching information he picked up over the years. 7. Deek Pollard's motto: “It'll feel better after it quits hurting” … and Coach Chryst's emphasis on working hard and having fun together. 8. Why he wanders among the players during each day's pre-practice stretching time. 9. Starting over on Sundays each week during the season. 10. Listening to other coaches, and asking the right questions at the right time. 11. Continually seeking new and better ways to coach and lead. 12. “Football brings us all together, but at the end, if all we have is football, then we've missed something.”
