Check-ins are where management actually happens—and in this episode checkins are given the status they deserve - at the center of performance, trust, and retention.  Drawing on research, including insights from Harvard Business Review, our Crina and Kirsten unpack a core truth: employees expect a lot from their managers—and rightly so. In a hybrid world, managers are responsible for clarity, feedback, support, and connection, often without much face-to-face time. And the single best tool to meet that moment is a regular check-in. But not all check-ins work. The good ones are not status updates in disguise. They are focused on the employee—their priorities, their obstacles, and what they need today to move forward. Done right, the employee leads. They come prepared with what's working, what's not, and the one or two things that actually matter next. This is real-time career development, not a box-checking exercise. We also talk about structure: agreeing on expectations, who owns the meeting, what gets discussed, and how often it happens. And yes—frequency matters. Cancelling sends a message, and it's not a good one. Then there's feedback. Clear, direct, and specific—the “rifle, not shotgun” approach. The Prime Minister says New Zealand's free trade agreement with India should be in effect by the end of the year. The deal's been signed in New Delhi overnight. It's due to be tabled in Parliament today, have its first reading in May, and then go through select committee and public consultation before its final reading, possibly in late September. Christopher Luxon told Mike Hosking that having the deal already signed is positive. He says there is a clause in the deal in which India will match clauses in any further deals that are more favourable than ours. Luxon also defended cancelling his weekly appearance on TVNZ's Breakfast, saying he's “pretty accessible” when compared to other leaders around the world. The Prime Minister's team ditched the regular interview with Tova O'Brien last week, saying Kiwis now consume media on many different platforms – however he'll still appear on a case-by-case basis. He denied that meant he was “chicken or running for the hills”, in Hosking's words. Luxon says that he reset how he wanted to engage with the media, and it was no different than what former Prime Ministers such as Jim Bolger, John Key, and Jacinda Arden had done. But he also referred to a “second issue” – referring to National Party whip Stuart Smith's reported run-in with TVNZ reporters last week. An aviation fuel crisis, cancelled routes and global jitters could mean a hard landing for one of our top export industries. Dozens of tourism operators have had overseas visitors cancel due to the Middle East war, but industry insiders hope New Zealand's status as a safe destination will work in the country's favour. This could result in up to 5,000 flight cancellations per day, affecting potentially 500,000 passengers daily. Cruz says Democrats blocked a bill to pay essential workers during the shutdown, including air traffic controllers. 2. Analysis of Election Results The podcast dives into the election of Zohran Mamdani, a self-described socialist/communist, in New York City. Cruz and Ferguson portray Mamdani as emblematic of the radical left’s growing influence in the Democratic Party. They analyze exit poll data and voter demographics, highlighting: Young women (18–29) were the most supportive group, with 81% voting for Mamdani.
