Wisconsin Badgers football recruiting talk with John Garcia Jr. We discuss if Paul Chryst and the UW system impacts Wisconsin's recruiting classes in a negative way. We talk about the good and bad, how the system can help with running backs and offensive linemen, but how the coaching staff needs to work against negative recruiting from other schools for quarterbacks. We talk about blue-chip Texas 2024 linebacker Payton Pierce; what type of chance does Wisconsin have in that national recruitment and is it a situation like Tackett Curtiss where they will ultimately end up just short? Finally we talk about Evan Herrmann, a 2023 in-state late bloomer with unique athletic ability and why his recruitment is starting to blow up. What type of upside does he have after a couple of years of development? How this season can still be successful for the Wisconsin Badgers football team

Three ways the Wisconsin Badgers football team can still salvage a successful season. We start with the Big Ten West, the Badgers have a tough road ahead of them, but not a particularly daunting schedule. They will need to rip through the rest of their conference slate and hopefully finish it off with a win against Minnesota. Do that, and the Badgers will win the division and earn a trip to Indy. We also talk about the need to finish with some recruiting mojo, the class is not strong right now and lacks a QB, both of these issues need to be rectified - especially coming off what was a disappointing class last year. Finally the offense needs to continue evolving under first year OC Bobby Engram and we need to see more growth from the young offensive line under Bob Bostad. We take a further look at the beatdown from the Ohio State Buckeyes as they blasted the Wisconsin Badgers in Columbus. We zoom in on the first quarter and look at how the game got away from Wisconsin. There was some excellent play calls and design from Ryan Day and CJ Stroud, some bad misses from Jim Leonard's defense and a controversial decision from Paul Chryst in the first quarter. Specifically with the Buckeyes we talk about all of the ways they scheme open their galaxy of stars using motion, play-action and rollouts. Its very impressive and it clearly caused issues for the Badgers defense. We talk about the Wisconsin front 7 and a disappointing effort from Keanu Benton and the linebackers. We also talk about the various ways Ohio State can make you pay if you lose focus. On offense, it was the Badgers continuing focus on running every first down out of predictable formations that marked yet another disappointing Badgers effort. We also break down Paul Chryst's decision to punt on 4th-1 down 21-0 and why thats a spot where the Badgers needed to go for it. We jump on the reaction show to talk about Paul Chryst, Graham Mertz, Ryan Day, CJ Stroud and what happened to the vaunted Badgers defense. Braelon Allen had a good game, but there was precious little outside of that to hand your hats on as Badger fans. The Buckeyes jumped to a big early lead with their explosive offense and a Graham Mertz interception. It was all downhill from there. Wisconsin Badgers football recruiting talk with John Garcia from Sports Illustrated. What is the latest on Wisconsin quarterback recruiting? What about the two in-state 2024 blue-chip prospects from Waukesha, Wisconsin -- running back Corey Smith and offensive lineman Donovan Harbour. We start with the QBs and talk a lot about Parker Leise a pro-style QB that Wisconsin has been talking to from IMG. We also briefly talk about Ryan Browne and Cole Lacrue again. John loves the film and versatility of Corey Smith, we talk about why he's a modern running back and why his film is so impressive. John love's Smith's ability to play in space and also to be a really good player in the passing game. We talk a little bit about his similarities to Nate White the 2023 in-state Wisconsin running back verbal commit. On the last segment we talk about Donovan Harbour, who is Smith's teammate and a national level recruit in his own right. John loves Harbour's frame and ability to pass protect and get to the second level. We talk about his aggressiveness and why that motor is so important as offensive lineman. Its game week for the Wisconsin Badgers football team as they gear up for the Ohio State Buckeyes. We talk about how good Ohio State is and why I hate playing them. I talk a little bit about the recent history in the series and just how demoralizing playing the Buckeyes can be. I talk about the key players on Ohio State and dive into just how good CJ Stroud is and why he's going to drive Badger fans nuts. We discuss the great WR corp Stroud has at his disposal and why a potential injury to the Buckeyes star running back may be a big deal. We discuss five Badgers starting with QB Graham Mertz that need to play well for the Badgers to have a chance against OSU this weekend. Wisconsin is going to need big games from two veteran leaders along the LOS with Joe Tippman and Keanu Benton needing to play major roles in this game for the Wisconsin team to have success. Finally I talk about the gameplan; will Paul Chryst open up the playbook or will Wisconsin try to play a ball-control scheme to keep CJ Stroud off the field. Which strategy makes the most sense? Wisconsin Badgers football has played three games, Justin and I go position by position and talk about which spots are better than we thought they were and which spots are worse. We are both onboard with Graham Mertz looking incredible. Statistically Mertz is one of the best quarterbacks in the Big Ten, certainly nobody saw that coming. We also talk about the depth in the WR room and the surprising play from the two tight ends. Who does Clay Cundiff remind us of ? On the negative side, both the running backs and offensive line have underperformed, specifically Braelon Allen is down from his yards per carry last year, is there reason to be concerned, or is it just early season jitters. Defensively we talk about the uneven play from the linebackers and we agree we expected more from the guys not named Nick Herbig. We disagree on the defensive line, as Justin is a little higher with their performance up to this date. Finally we discuss the secondary and why we both think they have been about as good as expected given the injuries and new players. Lets talk about the positives for the Wisconsin Badgers football team; starting with the fact that Graham Mertz is a good quarterback - he looks so much better than what we saw last year. Currently Mertz is statistically the 4th best QB in the Big Ten. If that trend holds, I still think the rest of this team is really good and the loss to Washington State is going to look more and more like a blip in the noise. If we still believe all of the pre-season hype with the defense, with Bob Bostad coaching the offensive line, with the upgraded WR corps and with Bobby Engram calling plays. We talk about just how bad the Big Ten West is, and why Wisconsin even if they continue to struggle may be the best bad team in the division. The most competent team so far has been Minnesota and they've played absolutely nobody and will need to go through Madison for the axe. We also talk about the large number of new players and faces that are still likely gelling and how the Badgers are a team that should keep getting better as the season unfolds. Wisconsin Badgers football head coach Paul Chryst has some head-scratching comments during his post-game press conference following the ugly loss to Washington State. We talk about his comments on the 4th down play as well as his comments about Graham Mertz on today's Locked On Badgers. Chryst was upset about his 4th down decision to go for it near mid-field, I would argue it was the right call and Chryst is learning the wrong lessons from what happened on that play. I'm worried he's going to get even more conservative. Chryst also had some odd comments regarding Graham Mertz pushing the ball downfield, and how perhaps he shouldn't have quite as much. I thought the downfield passing game was maybe the best part of the inconsistent Badgers attack and its odd that Chryst would take that opportunity in the press conference to question his QBs decision making. We also discuss the Badgers remaining games and what it would take for this to be considered a successful season. Is winning the Big Ten West enough ? I talk about why all of these prospects have something to offer and how underrate they are in certain aspects. I talk about why Jackson Flottmeyer reminds me a little bit of Joel Stave in a good way and how the Badgers will need to make some tough choices with regards to which quarterbacks they are chasing and prioritizing. We discuss the possibility of a two quarterback class and why that might make some sense with the prospects on the board. Next we talk about a group of very talented 2024 prospects that made their way to Madison headlined by in-state blue chip running back Corey Smith. I talk about Corey's game and the other players in his recruitment, we discuss just how talented he is and why he's such an elite running back. There was also an intriguing group of tight ends in Madison led by Carter Nelson a 4* TE out of Nebraska - he's an elite athlete with tremendous upside. The Badgers won big 38-0, behind a strong game from Braelon Allen, Graham Mertz and Nick Herbig. We start the show with three things we liked and three things we didn't like. Badger fans have to be thrilled with Graham Mertz as the often maligned QB went 14-16 with no turnovers. We talk about the safety depth and why even with a tough loss to Hunter Wholer the new found depth at that position is a big deal. We also talk about some things we don't like including a curious and frustrating decision by Paul Chryst. Next on Locked on Badgers we grade all of the positions. I break down why I think QBs and LBs deserve high marks - Nick Herbig in particular led a big-time performance by the LBs. I talk about some the positions that didn't live up to their pre-season hype including a less than optimal job by some of the new cornerback transfers - particularly Cedrick Dort, we also discuss how well --- or not --- the new look offensive line played. Graham Mertz looks really good as the Wisconsin Badgers pummel Illinois State 38-0 in week one. The biggest question mark all season has been Graham Mertz and the passing game, and although he wasn't really needed - he still looked really good with a 14-16 performance with ZERO turnovers. Most importantly Mertz was in control and didn't force anything. We also talk about the dominating performance on the ground from Braelon Allen and why Badgers fans have been so spoiled over the years with guys like Allen, Taylor, White, Ball, and Gordon. We talk about the defense and just how good Herbig is - barring injury this is almost certainly his last season in Madison, he's just too good for college football at this point. From a perspective of things that worry us - the secondary didn't look great. We talk about the absence of Alexander Smith and if his return could make the difference for a secondary that struggled in coverage against Illinois State. The Wisconsin Badgers are playing football this weekend against Illinois State. I talk about the things we can learn from playing an outmatched opponent. With a revamped coaching staff on the offensive side of the ball, we are watching to see how crisp the offense is - a bevy of penalties is a bad sign going forward for this team. We also talk about Graham Mertz and Bobby Engram, how will the new look passing game perform and will we see some of the balance that Paul Chryst has talked about ? In the next two segments of Locked On Badgers we get your user comments on the show. Lots of talk about QB recruiting; we get into the upcoming visit from Ryan Browne and why it might make sense to take two QBs this cycle. We talk about the defensive secondary and how the athletic group has a lot of upside but may still some seasoning. Finally we talk about Paul Chryst and the hope that he might be a little more aggressive this year. The Wisconsin Badgers football recruiting efforts ramp up with several quarterbacks coming to Madison. We start with Ryan Browne a 6-4 QB playing in New York. John talks about why Browne has flown under the radar and specifically why his skill-set is so intriguing. He's a big framed kid with the ability to move around in the pocket and make some plays with his feet. He has also won a state title in Florida. Next we talk about Cole LaCrue, the 6-2 gunslinger from Colorado, both John and I love his ability to improvise and make plays off-script. He also has a really good arm and shows the ability to nail some deep throws. He's a player that is starting to see his interest blow up. Finally we talk about in-state QB Jerry Kaminski, and why he's a little bit of a blend between Browne and LaCrue. We discuss his commitment to North Dakota and why that should raise some eyebrows with that program's ability to churn out QBs. Finally we talk about which QB the Badgers should prioritize, John thinks Ryan Browne from a recruiting profile perspective might have the most options with his frame and arm. Its finally here, the Wisconsin Badgers and the Illinois State Redbirds kick off week 1 of the college football season. We talk about what Paul Chryst and the Badgers need to do in week 1 for a successful game and a successful stepping point for the rest of the year. Why Graham Mertz and the passing game need to be given the opportunities to throw early and often as that unit desperately needs the reps and continuity to build on throughout the year. Paul Chryst needs to use week one as an opportunity to work on the passing game. I talk about all of the new components in the passing eco-system and why the reps are going to be so important in the first three weeks. We introduce the Illinois State program, how did they do last year and on the cupcake scale how tough are they ? Are there any areas they might be able to stress the Badgers and keep the game close. We talk about what a dominant Badgers game could mean for the rest of the year and how much to overract to a potential week one beatdown. We discuss the importance of getting through the early stretch of games as quickly as possible without injuries, which means hopefully getting a lot of the starters out in the second half and using those reps as opprotuniteis to build depth at several positions on the team. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXZ-mA1cHsJMi_K0UxXeqxQ WANT MORE DAILY WISCONSIN FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL CONTENT? Jay Shaw and Alexander Smith anchor what could be the deepest group of cornerbacks in the Paul Chryst and Jim Leonard era. The Badgers staff did an incredible job in the transfer portal this off-season brining in Jay Shaw, Cedrick Dort and Justin Clark to help bolster what would have been a depleted group of defensive backs. Specifically Jay Shaw the UCLA transfer might have a huge impact with his experience, size and athletic ability. Next we talk about the duo at safety with veteran John Torchio and youngster Hunter Wholer ready to step into his sizeable expecations as the former 4* safety looks to deliver on the promise. We discuss if Torchio is the ideal running-mater for Wholer and what could make or break this safety group this season. Finally on Locked On Badgers we grade the group for this season and for the upcoming years. Justin is very high on this group and delivers a B+ grade for this season, I'm a little lower as I don't fully trust the safety depth. We discuss his running mate in CJ Goetz and why the solid veteran fills a vital role on the team. We also discuss the high potential of the younger players on the roster with Darryl Peterson, TJ Bollers and Kaden Johnson backing up the OLBs. Next we move into the ILBs and why this team can't fully replace Leo Chenal and Jack Sanborn.
