Some bands reunite because nostalgia sells. Others reunite because they still have something to say. The tables turn. After years behind the camera and in the producer's chair, Zak Palmas finally sits down as the guest, and Knuckles gets the yarn out of him. Zak breaks down his Podcast Royale fight against Matty Brown from the inside. His wife was pregnant and stuck at home with morning sickness. His trainer bailed to chase a world title. One of Australia's best boxers was meant to be in his corner and never showed. So Zak sat out the back of the Gold Coast Convention Centre completely alone, sweating bullets, watching Matty and his crew laugh around the corner, seriously considering walking out the door. The lead-up was a disaster too. Got married, did his buck's party, wrecked his ankle at said buck's party, went on his honeymoon, and rocked up to fight night on five weeks of training. Then he walked out in front of 5,500 people, a bloke who's spent his whole career as the back of someone's head on a camera, and realised it's nothing like sparring. Matty was southpaw. Zak had never sparred a southpaw in his life. His mate Yungu just kept screaming go left, go left. He got the W. He still reckons Matty won it. Jerry Graham remained one of the promotion's top heels, while the fierce rivalry between Freddie Blassie and the McIntyre brothers became the backbone of the territory. During this period, Georgia also expanded its touring schedule well beyond Atlanta, establishing a regular loop of towns that helped grow wrestling across the entire state.  Plus, Augusta gets its own TV, and a steady parade of legendary names passed through including Lou Thesz, Buddy Rogers, Argentina Rocca, Verne Gagne, Dick the Bruiser, Bull Curry, the Lewin Brothers, and many others. We'll follow the Southern Championship lineage, the top rivalries, the expansion of the territory, and the foundation being laid for what would soon become one of wrestling's premier promotions. Nick is best known as the lead singer for the band Haircut 100 who scored big hits with Love Plus One and Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl) in the early 80's. He left for a solo career in late 1982.
