Think of all that has changed as a result of startups and creative destruction. Nothing is the same as it was because of the sometimes revolutionary ideas of entrepreneurs. In a similar way the 1960s were a time of creative destruction for America and the world. The post war paradigms that had shaped the country through the late 40's and early 50's were shattered. And just as today we are struggling, socially, politically and economically to come to grips with the our technology disruption, on a grander scale we are still trying to come to grips with the social and political shattering of the 60's We explore this with National Book Award winner Kevin Boyle, whose new book is The Shattering: America in the 1960s My conversation with Kevin Boyle:
When many people think about Chanukah, they think about heroism. And that makes sense: the Maccabees were real heroes, defying the might of their Syrian Greek overlords and fighting for Jewish practice in the Land of Israel. At the same time, much of the Jewish world gets the meaning of heroism wrong... or gets it right and chooses to ignore it. What is heroism, where are we failing, and what can we do to start demonstrating real heroism in our Orthodox communities? Welcome to Season 3 of The Ethical Rainmaker a podcast that explores the world of inequity in nonprofits and philanthropy including where we should step into our power or step out of the way! It is part of my desire and effort to bring zero cost information, case studies and inspiration, to everyone in the third sector, and especially those who know or are learning that we've been complicit in upholding some problematic practices, and maybe some dishonestly but want to do better on this journey. If you like what you are listening to and want to support this work, find us here on Patreon or email us at email@example.com to talk about sponsorship! In this episode, Michelle talks with Liz LeClair a fundraiser and vocal advocate for human rights gender equality and social justice. Rise, Tarnished, and be guided by grace to brandish the power of the Elden Ring and become an Elden Lord in the Lands Between. In the Lands Between ruled by Queen Marika the Eternal, the Elden Ring, the source of the Erdtree, has been shattered. Marika's offspring, demigods all, claimed the shards of the Elden Ring known as the Great Runes, and the mad taint of their newfound strength triggered a war: The Shattering. A war that meant abandonment by the Greater Will. And now the guidance of grace will be brought to the Tarnished who were spurned by the grace of gold and exiled from the Lands Between. Ye dead who yet live, your grace long lost, follow the path to the Lands Between beyond the foggy sea to stand before the Elden Ring. And become the Elden Lord.QuipScope is where we provide our thoughts and impressions while discussing how we're getting on with the latest video game releases. Welcome. Have a seat on the couch. Plug your headphones in for the dishes. Strap in for the long car ride. Let's chill for a bit. I'm so happy to have you as part of the 3 Books community. Welcome 3 Bookers! Welcome, Cover to Cover Club Members! And welcome, Secret Club Members. Thank you for being part of our ridiculous conversation over nearly 15 years. I was in my late 30s when I started 3 Books and I'll be in my early 50s when I'm done. What a joy this pilgrimage has been so far! Just think about the amazing conversations we've had this year. Quentin Tarantino from his writer's studio. Shirley the Nurse in the gas station parking parking lot. Did you like Zafar in Chapter 89? Did you fall in love with Zafar the Hamburger Man like I did? How about Brené Brown, Adam Grant, Georges Saunders, Dave Eggers, Douglas Rushkoff, and Jenny Lawson? It's been a wonderful year. And it's not over. It's just getting better and better. Today I have someone who Tim Ferriss describes as a “philosopher-operator and poet-recluse of the highest order.” A very apt and astute description. Because who exactly is Derek Sivers? Well, he's a guy who's given three TED Talks with over nine million views like: How to Start a Movement, Keep Your Goals to Yourself, and Weird, Or Just Different? (I actually used his TED Talks as part of leadership training at Walmart!) His “first follower” principle was a wonderful introduction in Leadership 101. A three-minute TED Talk substituting for a year in a college lecture hall. And maybe that's kind of … Derek. A master distiller boiling things down into their most vital, vital components. His website Sivers.org is like a minimalist website from 1997. Looks like Amazon before they launched graphics. Yet it's extremely functional and absolutely teeming with wisdom. It's also the only place to get his books! Yes, books. Many books! He writes and publishes them on his website. He doesn't care about going through the big publishers and he doesn't care about being available on Amazon. I just read and recommended Hell Yeah or No: What's Worth Doing in my book club and can't wait to get his new book How To Live. Sometimes I wish I could write as pithy and wise as Derek. A good example of that is in my most recent book, You Are Awesome, I was looking for a way to open the book and I came across this Taoist fable called The Farmer with One Horse. A couple thousand year old story! I spent so much time looking for the absolute tightest, shortest version of the fable and guess where I ended up? Sivers.org, of course. I asked Derek if I could use his version of the fable as the opening to my book and he said yes. Kind Derek, generous Derek, singular Derek. And Giver Derek. Why does he give so much? Why does he post his personal email address and answer every email? Why does he sell his hardcover books … at cost!? What's behind all this? Well I asked him and I think his answer might surprise you. Derek Sivers is one of the most innovative thinkers around. Buckle up, take a seat and let's listen to him share wisdom on things like: why you should rename the rooms of your house, why you should aspire to read slow, why it is more important to question answers than answer questions, what is the game of catch that is played between readers and writers, what can we learn from the grandfather of self-help, how can we learn to distill big thoughts into small words, how can we thrive in an unknowable future, how do we prepare for death and financial insecurity, why shouldn't we try to remember people's names, what is the slightly counterintuitive purpose to any conference that you go to in person, why should we consider changing jobs every couple of years, what would you have talking parrots say in a utopia, and, of course what are the eminent Derek Sivers' three most formative books… Are you ready? Let's turn the page into Chapter 90 now… What You'll Learn: Why should you change the names of the rooms in your house? Why should you learn slow? Why is it more important to question answers than to answer questions? Why should we take the time to revisit our reading? What is the game of catch between the reader and the writer? Who was the grandfather of the Self Help Movement? What is Stoicism? How can we thrive in an unknowable future? How do we prepare for death? How do we prepare for financial insecurity? Why should we separate what we love from what makes money? When shouldn't we learn to remember people's names? How can we optimize time at conferences? How can we make people listening to us like us? How do we stop worrying and start living? Why should we consider changing jobs every 2 years? Why does risk lead to growth? What is delayed gratification and why is it so important? What are the different time focus types and how do they change one's view of the world? How should we measure success? What is flow? How can we make time for reading? She was committed to her role and the expectations of her church, but when she tried to leave quietly she was stalked by missionaries in the group. She'll get into the details on her involvement and more in today's episode.Support us on Patreon! patreon.com/themodestyfilesFollow us on Instagram @themodestyfiles for updates and bonus content.
We are continuing our series on sustainable investing. We have so far talked about proxy voting and impact bonds. And today we're going to talk a little bit about investing for the future. What does that mean? Well, that means we're welcoming one of my dear partners, Emily Lee from Impax Asset Managers. She is the Vice President of Business Development and a key partner that I utilize in my investment management when it comes to sustainability for my clients. Impax has been around for 50 years, so they're not new to this game, and neither is Emily. We're going to talk focusing on where we are right now and the growing popularity of sustainable investing, what impact women and future generations have on sustainable investing, and then what you, as the end investor, can really make an impact on. So I hope that you'll tune into today's episode and share this free educational resource, as well. Sharing doesn't cost you anything but it us to spread even more education and awareness. Today on Bold Perceptions we discuss shattered perceptions with Quinn Driggs. Quinn grew up in Utah and completely broke the mold and traditional routine of her family at 20 years old, moving to the Middle East alone. Because of the opportunities of the wild Wild West that is the modern day social media marketplace, Quinn has a location-dependent business that pays her throughout her life in what most Americans think of as “danger.”Through that process she became extremely interested in the absolute “truth” about the Middle East compared to what religion and news outlets portrayed on the contrary. Different religions and how they are portrayed is the metaphor Nick and Quinn use to talk about the rather overarching theme of broken perceptions and why there are certain routines, rules, common practices, and ways of life taught to us by society. It goes deeper than just a misconception about a religion on the other side of the globe- it relates to everything around you every day.

This has resulted in many Myths and stereotypes to develop over the ages. Mikala Brown knows what it's like to be undervalued and underestimated. At 18, Mikala was a teen mom who'd changed high schools six times, often living in hotels and feeding herself at food pantries in the process. She heard, on more than one occasion, that her past was all that could be expected of her, and that, really, she had no future. “I was told to my face more than once that I was nothing but a statistic, and that I was doing what everyone expected African American females to do: get pregnant as a teenager,” she says. “I know what it feels like to be all alone, pregnant and all by yourself.” But beneath rock bottom, she learned, is fertile soil. Mikala went on to turn statistics and stereotypes on their heads, purchasing her first home as a single mom by the age of 25 and going on to receive her Master's Degree in Special Education by 28. And that was just her getting started. On this episode of the Still Winning podcast, Mikala shares where she comes from, where she's going, and how she's bringing you to the top right alongside her. What You'll Learn: How Mikala went from teen mom to building a six-figure business at home, all while teaching in the public school system and raising three kids Why it's never too late to start your climb from the bottom Who all you'll be hearing from on Still Winning, from entrepreneurs and living legends to other empowered women And much more! Favorite Quote: “I'm proof that it's okay to be from the bottom and work your way all the way up to the top. If I can do it, you can, too.” — Mikala Brown How to Get Involved: Connect with Mikala: HERE

July 2021 saw temperatures in the western US and Canada smash previous records by 5 degrees. And that's what we should expect, according to a study prepared much earlier but published, coincidentally, just a few days later. A hallmark of rapid climate change, says author Erich Fischer of ETH Zurich, will be an accelerating number of record-shattering, and socially disruptive, events. A large new study on communications and hierarchy across a large range of our ape and monkey relatives has just been published. Lead author Katie Slocombe of the University of York explains the findings: like us, the primates live socially in groups, and there are leaders, but the more tolerant ones are also the more communicative ones. In species with ‘despotic' leaders, order seems to be maintained with more menacing silence. The double helix of all DNA on earth twists in one direction. But researchers at Tsinghua University in China have made some important steps towards making mirror life, in which the DNA twists in the opposite direction. Chemistry journalist Mark Peplow discusses the significance of this discovery with Roland Pease. One of the benefits of science's ability to read normal DNA has been to compare human genomes from across the globe – for example in the Human Genome Diversity Project –for what they reveal about both our health – and our past. But sequences from the Middle East have been sadly lacking. The Sanger Institute's Mohamed Almarri and colleagues have just rectified that, saying that the Middle East played such a key role in the human story. Today, up to 3 billion people around the world play video games, from candy-based mobile puzzles to virtual battlegrounds filled with weapons. Many people have turned to gaming during the pandemic as a way of staying connected – but what does science really say about the impact of gaming? Does playing violent video games lead to violence in the real world? Do brain training apps really work? How much gaming is too much – can video games really be addictive? And how can video games help us to explore difficult issues like death, grief and loss? Alex Lathbridge and Anand Jagatia look at the evidence and play some games along the way, speaking to psychologists, doctors and game designers about the power of video games to change us - for better or worse.
