PATREON EPISODE - https://www.patreon.com/posts/64007681 In the final months of his life, Walt Disney devoted much of his energy to designing a new kind of American city that he hoped would be a model for the future. Though E.P.C.O.T. ("Experimental Prototype City of Tomorrow") would never be fully realized, Disney's plan for a monopolistic controlled community remains a stunning vision of a world where capitalism outlasts democracy. We watched Disney's 1966 pitch film for his insane project. PLUS: how Martin Scorsese nearly cost Disney a relationship with China.
Walt Disney had an issue with the way cities were built in his day. He spent much of his adult life in Los Angeles, notorious for traffic and dangerous corridors. Disney believed he had all the answers, and after the success of Disney land, he began formulating a plan for a new city. Eventually, Epcot would become the project's name, which stood for the Experimental Prototype City of Tomorrow. This city was romantic, to say the least. If Walt had succeeded, it would've been one of the most incredible places on earth. However, many critics point to the glaring flaws with the strategy. The argument is moot, though. The city of Epcot never saw the light of day. After Disney's untimely death, his brother Roy took the reigns of the project and converted it to a larger iteration of the prosperous Disney land.
We take a look at the project Walt was working on during the construction of Disney World.
This week, we welcome back the always wonderful Joe Kaye to chat about Walt Disney's Experimental Prototype City of Tomorrow, or EPCOT. Matthew Burnside is on assignment so we are also joined by the also always wonderful Laura Knight. So you got three Disney park nerds talking about possibly the nerdist of all Disney parks. Instead of a history of EPCOT, we opt to explore what makes EPCOT unique and special. From making learning fun to being a gateway for expanding your pallet, to the raging debate about integrating IP into the park, we celebrate a park where idiosyncrasies and outside the box thinking have create a one of a kind experience. Today, I’m going to do you another kindness. I’m listing for you, my Top Three (3) Attractions in Epcot. In addition to that, I’ll also give you my strategy for getting on these attractions. Ie., use fast pass, arrive early, or use general attraction waiting. Before we get started, let me just provide you with an Epcot overview. Epcot stands for the Experimental Prototype City of Tomorrow. Well, that’s what Walt called it when he first introduced it to the public. He quickly corrected himself to what we all know Epcot as today, the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. Epcot is made up of what originally could have been two separate theme parks, as described by Disney legend, the late Marty Sklar (long time Disney Executive and Creative). The two (2) parts of Epcot are Future World and World Showcase. Future World houses such well-known attractions as Test Track, Soarin and Living with The Land. World Showcase is made of 11 countries, including delicious restaurants, shopping, and scenic views.
On this week's show, I welcome Sam Gennawey to the podcast. Sam authored "Walt and the Promise of Progress City" (which is available on Amazon), a look at what might have been - Progress City or the Experimental Prototype City of Tomorrow. Sam did his research and has some interesting insights into Walt's idea. Sam happened to be conducting some research at DisneyLand, and was in the park's parking lot while we chatted. His book is available at Amazon Sam also runs a blog at http://samlanddisney.blogspot.com/, and is a columnist at Mice Chat --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/daves-disney-view/message
