Born in South Africa, Neil Sandilands's decades-long career spans across the globe. As an actor, writer, director, and musician, Neil has meticulously put in the time to develop, hone, and refine his craft as an actor, as well as an all-around storyteller. You've seen him in Netflix's hit new post-apocalyptic series, “Sweet Tooth” as the witty and quirky General Abbot, opposite Tom Hanks in “News of the World,” in both The CW's series “The Flash,” and “The 100,” AMC/Sundance TV's “Hap and Leonard,” as well as classic beloved television series such as “House, “The Americans,” and many more. Today, Neil shares his love of all that life has to offer. He confidently declares himself a human first and an actor second, urging listeners to embrace every breath that life has to offer and to identify who and what truly matters most in your world. He believes that the most valuable auditions are those that we don't book and that it's never too late to start again. Finally, you won't want to miss his brilliant breakdown of the life of an actor which he separates into five distinct acts appropriately abbreviated as ACTORS: A for Approach, C for Curation, T for Technique, O for Overcoming, R for Release, and S for Start Again. After a short break, we are back with a new episode of the Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast, and we return with two interviews on this show! The first is with cinematographer Brad Smith, and the second features production designer Daniel Novotny, both who were involved in creating the hit Netflix series 'Outer Banks'.Cinematographer Brad Smith was responsible for the beautiful photography of the series. In the interview, we talk about how they used documentary film techniques to provide a sense of reality and to show the socioeconomic divide the two sides of the island. We also discuss the look of the series, and the incredible drone camera work which helped to immerse viewers in the island location.Along with working on 'Outer Banks', Brad has served as director of photography on series such as 'Manifest', 'The Americans', 'Quantico' and 'Billions'.The second interview features production designer Daniel Novotny. Daniel is something of a legacy production designer, as his father, Michael Novotny was also a hugely successful production designer. Prior to 'Outer Banks' Daniel was production designer on 'Gotham', 'Dominion', and the monolithic procedural drama 'CSI'.For 'Outer Banks', Daniel talks about the challenges of making Charleston in South Carolina look like North Carolina, along with his favourite sets to create, and the rather surprising answer to which was the most challenging to work with! Mark returns to discuss the Illegals program and Directorate S now that I completed the FX series. The 6 season show chronicles and illegals family in the US and its (exaggerated) operations towards the end of the Cold War as perestroika approaches. We will discuss the fiction and fact, fantasy and reality, noting how the show strove, for the most part, to attain realism. His site is here: https://espionagehistoryarchive.com

In this second episode, I take a look at 'The Americans' and Robert Frank a photographer who travelled across America for two years and took 28000 images ' He sucked a sad poem out of America' The book that followed was a critique of American society - Images of empty diners, glitz and dismay - A tragic vision of The American Dream. Frank passed away this year and I felt it was important to recognise the impact his work had on photography - A photographer who definitely did not care for the rules.
This week's Geektown Radio podcast sees Matt from Entertainment Talk join me to chat through the usual weekly tv, film and gaming news, plus a look at the next week on tv. We also have an exclusive interview with the brilliant composer Nathan Barr, who has most recently been working on fantasy Amazon series 'Carnival Row'.'Carnival Row' is set in a Victorian fantasy world filled with mythological immigrant creatures whose exotic homelands were invaded by the empires of man. This growing population struggles to coexist with humans – forbidden to live, love, or fly with freedom. But even in darkness, hope lives, as a human detective, Rycroft Philostrate (Orlando Bloom – ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’), and a refugee faerie named Vignette Stonemoss (Cara Delevingne ‘Suicide Squad’) rekindle a dangerous affair despite an increasingly intolerant society. Vignette harbours a secret that endangers Philo’s world during his most important case yet: a string of gruesome murders threatening the uneasy peace of the Row.Two-time Emmy-nominated composer Nathan Barr has received critical acclaim for his unmatched versatility, incorporating eclectic instruments from musical cultures across the world. Alongside 'Carnival Row', Nathan scored the hit Amblin Entertainment/Universal Pictures family-horror film 'The House with a Clock' in its Walls, directed by Eli Roth and starring Jack Black and Cate Blanchett. this year also saw score the soundtrack for Emmy-winning biographical miniseries 'Fosse/Verdon'. Nathan's previous work includes brilliant Amazon series 'Sneaky Pete', the multi-award-winning drama 'The Americans', and the fangtastic vampire drama 'True Blood'. Holly Taylor's achievements are no accident. They are, and will continue to be, cultivated through hard work, humility, and consistent persistence. Since she was young, Holly knew what she wanted and she worked to get, while at the same time discovering and striving to find who she truly is. Rooted in strong morals and character by her parent's actions and guidance, she has continued to raise the bar for herself in her professional career, and in her overall life. Holly is a young actress that is most known for her work as Sharon Percy in the Broadway play, Billy Elliot, and as Paige Jennings in the TV drama series, The Americans. In terms of accolades, awards, and nominations, she won Best Younger Supporting Actress in a TV series by Young Artist Awards and the show she stars in, the Americans, won the Golden Globes award for Best TV Drama Series. Through this conversation you will see and realize that Holly's aspirations and mindset extend far outside the realm of acting. Beyond her achievements, she is someone who truly "get's it" and is living it. So, in this episode don't just listen to what she is says, but apply it to your life, as well. Navas, Marina Such y Jorge Navas.
On the November 20, 2018 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film writers Hoai-Tran Bui and Chris Evangelista to talk about the latest film and tv news, including Star Wars, Aquaman, Rocky III and Great Gatsby. And in the mail bag we'll talk about your television show recommendations and answer questions about physical media and movie theater presentation. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast, Spotify and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it). Opening Banter: Staff are traveling, hopefully, we'll have a water cooler tomorrow. In The News: Chris: Mark Hamill Pitched George Lucas The Idea To Have Boba Fett Revealed As Luke Skywalker's Mother HT: Most of ‘Aquaman' Will Be Presented in Full Screen IMAX Chris: The Original ‘Rocky III' Idea Involved Rocky Hanging Out with the Pope HT: ‘Gatz': A ‘Great Gatsby' Origin Series Featuring a Young, Hot, Mixed-Race Gatsby is Coming to YouTube Premium In The Mailbag: Yesterday we were talking about YouTube's ad-supported movies. Don H writes in “Did you now VUDU has been doing this for quite some time now? I'm not sure how long, but I found old marketing e-mails from them going back to March 2017 offering free TV shows with ads. They have over a 1000 movies and TV shows to choose from and they change up the selection monthly.” Peter asked for TV show recommendations, here are some of the responses: Banshee is my first suggestion. I would argue it's the greatest action television show ever made. The fight scenes throughout this show get progressively more insane and unbelievable in all the best ways. The only thing I'll say is you just need to get over the initial premise, and if you can do that you will have so much fun with this show, and the final season (not only was chosen to end by the creator instead of being cancelled) brings everything home in truly the best way it all can. Rectify is another option if you're open to a bit of a slow burn that will literally make you cry every episode, and not for the reasons that Parenthood or This is Us do. The dialogue and the uniqueness of the main character makes this show very much worth the time to invest. Man Seeking Woman. Hilarious and unique sketch type show that also is able to tied together a coherent story from season to season and again I feel the way they choose to end the show is just perfect Those are my top 3, at least of current shows. Hope you check em out and can't wait to hear you talk about how awesome Lucas Hood and Kai Proctor are!” Jacob Chandler Mississippi: “Hey Peter, I heard you were looking for a new show to watch and you have a list of criteria for what kind of show you want it to be. I'm not sure if this show meets all the criteria but it's definitely worth checking out if you haven't already. I would highly recommend looking at Amazon Prime's Patriot. It's a dark comedy about a U.S. spy coming to Luxembourg to interfere with the Iranian election. And as generic and uninteresting as that sounds, it is actually one of the better shows in the “sad hitman” genre. It's really quirky with a very complex plot and a whole lot of ridiculousness somehow wrapped up in a decent emotional struggle. Check out at least the first three episodes and if you don't like it by then you probably won't be able to get into it. But I highly recommend it. Love the show” Matt Y: “Long time listener, first time writer as they say. Love the show! Last week you guys discussed super hero one-offs and a couple of other examples of one of style shows like Black Mirror. I wanted to recommend that you check out an episode or two of Room 104 on HBO. The first season from the Duplas brothers was zainey and unexpected. Each half hour episode takes place in the same nondescript motel room. The era, visitors, and metaphysical rules are always different. The first season episodes split pretty evenly into a third of the episodes as junk, another third as a “good sit”, and a third of truly inspired story telling. I'd recommend you check out episodes 2 (Pizza Boy), 5 (The Internet), and 7 (The Missionaries). Season two is three episodes in and they have all been great! Last night Michael Shannon played a Russian diplomat who sets up a date with a woman he met on the Internet, played by Judy Greer. You don't get these strange stories anywhere else! Anyways, have a great weekend.” Fred from Chattanooga,TN says “Of course you may have seen all of these but I thought I'd throw a few out there that I really like and these could keep you busy for a little while Six Feet Under The Shield The Knick - the show was directed by Stephen Soderbergh and is fantastic. So underrated Banshee - another fantastic show that not a lot of people talk about Mad Men, The Leftovers, Deadwood.” Roger writes in: “you might want to check out one of the greatest sci fi shows of all time!!! babylon 5!!! it's free on amazon prime. the first season is a tad a slow build, but it's just incredible. You might also want to check out misfits , it's on hulu right now” Sean from Missouri writes in “Hey Peter, I thought I might suggest the X-Files or Gilmore Girls for shows with a decent amount of seasons that you could watch if you haven't seen those yet. I guess there's also the various Star Trek series which have a lot of seasons if you put them all together. Hope that helps!” Errol L writes in “Hey Peter! Errol from LA. Looking for some binge worthy completed shows? Well strap in! Peter Freeman from Gainesville, VA writes in “You mentioned you were looking for a suggestion for a serialized TV show. Have you tried Person of Interest. This show ran 5 seasons and stars Jim Caviezel and Michael Emerson. Jonathan Nolan was the show runner The first season initially was procedural with an over arching storyline but by season two it became a full blown serialized show. I believe it's available on Netflix.“ Amber-T writes in “In terms of shows with lots of seasons that are available and fun to watch... (and you're right, I don't know what you've seen) The Good Wife, The West Wing, Doctor Who, 30 Rock, Parks & Recreation, Mad Men, Supernatural, Friday Night Lights. I also recently watched an indie horror film called Sick For Toys that's super dark and weird, about a brother who kidnaps a guy for his sister for her present every Christmas. Deals with a lot of #metoo stuff without being too on the nose. Flew really under the radar, but worth checking out.” Key Chung writes in: “just heard the latest /film daily pod. You should mos def check out The Expanse! It starts off very good and gets better as it goes along. Last season was best season of sci-fi currently on TV imho.” Mike T writes in “Hey—if you're looking for a show to binge, I would suggest Peep Show. It's a British comedy, 9 seasons (each better than the last), and it's serialized. Very dark, and one of the few comedies that warrants repeat viewings. It's on Hulu and Amazon Prime.” MovieGeekBlog tweeted “Peter, if you are looking for serialised stories #theAmericans or #TheGoodWife are some of the best. Also, have you seen #MurderOne?” David Chen tweeted: “just heard the most recent Slash Daily. If you have Hulu, I think you should check these out. It truly was groundbreaking and probably still holds up.” Classic ER Episodes Michael O. from Nashville TN writes in to ask: “This is more a question about physical media and less about film. But how many more years do you give to retail stores like GameStop? When will that suffer the same fate as Blockbuster?” Hashim (pronounced like wash-em) writes in “Hello gang, Enjoying your podcast which I recently discovered. You asked for film related questions on a recent podcast. I'm wondering what the best movie going experiences you can recommend when it comes to visually enjoying a film. Super large screens really don't matter much to me, I feel like I can always sit closer if I want everything projected large. It's mainly about contrast, color, clarity and deep blacks and overall brightness. Are the premium offerings from standard digital projection really worth it when it comes to the visuals? If so, which theater chains stand out? We currently do not have a true Imax screen in the entire state of Michigan. It's all about MJR, Cinemark and AMC in the Detroit area. Essentially, can you rank based on visuals and not necessarily on sound, food, seats, etc?” All the other stuff you need to know: You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today's show at slashfilm.com, and linked inside the show notes. /Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com. Composer Nathan Barr has received critical acclaim for his unmatched versatility, incorporating eclectic instruments from musical cultures across the world. Nathan recently completed construction on his new 8,000 square foot personal studio in Tarzana, California that can house 50-60 musicians. The studio, Bandrika (named after the fictional country in Hitchcock’s The Lady Vanishes, which I had forgotten!), houses the original Wurlitzer pipe organ that was installed at Fox studios in 1928 that recently went through a four-year restoration. With 1,500 pipes, able to mirror hundreds of different instruments ("It's like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory for music," he says.), its music can be heard in iconic films including Journey to the Center of the Earth, The Sound of Music, and Patton. Barr and his team are currently compiling a list of composers that have used the organ including Oscar winners John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith and Bernard Herrmann. I chatted with the two-time Emmy-nominated composer about his work on The Americans, how his pianist mother and banjo-playing father introduced him to music in Japan at five years of age and becoming a collector of rare and unusual instruments from around the world such as a human bone trumpet from Tibet, dismantled pianos, a rare Glass Armonica, gourd cellos, many of which you can hear on any number of his original compositions. We also talk about some of his favorite composers and film scores including The Third Man and its classic zither. Since the end of The Americans, Nathan scored the dystopian action thriller, The Domestics, starring Kate Bosworth and Tyler Hoechlin, which hit theaters June 29th and is currently scoring season two of AMC’s multi-generational western epic, The Son, starring Pierce Brosnan. He's also putting the finishing touches on his next collaboration with director Eli Roth, the upcoming adventure film The House with a Clock in Its Walls (see trailer below) starring Jack Black and two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett. The film's release on September 21 will mark the Wurlitzer's 21st-century debut for movie audiences. 2019 will find Nathan scoring Amazon’s upcoming fantasy, period drama, Carnival Row, starring Orlando Bloom and produced by Guillermo del Toro. Nathan Barr currently resides in Los Angeles, California.

Steph opens the show by shitting on the new Guns 'N' Roses song. And he’s back! Jeff makes his return and we slobber all over him. Also This week - local Atlanta comedian Joe Gallois is on the pod to talk about his Queer Eye makeover in the new season currently streaming on Netflix and what it was like to be #metoo’d by some of the stars. Joe is a very funny dude who kills at VFW halls all over the South. We also talk about all the stuff we’re watching at the moment like #Barry, #Westworld #TheTerror and much more! But an episode would not be complete without a visit from Guy Ritchie’s very own cockney RedBox Troll giving all the best wrong synopsis of new releases. Definitely check his box if Benicio Del Toro ever goes missing! Dewey Part Deuce Welcome to Mere Rhetoric. Or maybe welcome back, because last week we talked about John Dewey and today we’re talking about John Dewey again. You don’t have to go back and listen to the last week’s episode on Dewey and aesthetics, but if you like this, Dewey part the Deuce, then you migh want to go check out the previous episode on Dewey and the artful life. Today, today thought,we get to talk about Dewey’s political and educational contributions. Dewey was a huge fan of democracy and of education for democracy. He said, “Democracy and the one, ultimate, ethical ideal of humanity are to my mind synonymous." One scholar summarized Dewey’s politics in this way: “First, Dewey believed that democracy is an ethical ideal rather than merely a political arrangement. Second, he considered participation, not representation, the essence of democracy. Third, he insisted on the harmony between democracy and the scientific method: ever-expanding and self-critical communities of inquiry, operating on pragmatic principles and constantly revising their beliefs in light of new evidence, provided Dewey with a model for democratic decision making…Finally, Dewey called for extending democracy, conceived as an ethical project, from politics to industry and society.” Dewey was big on democracy. this idea, especially about participation in democracy instead of just representation inspired much of his writing in education. The kind of progressive education that Dewey endorsed was education for democracy, education that focused on making student empathetic and engaged citizens. Dewey’s most articulate thinking about engaged democracy comes as most good thinking does: in response to an interlocutor whose ideas make our blood boil. For Dewey this was Walter Lippmann. the famous Lippmann-Dewer debates begne in 1922 when Walter Lippmann wrote s book called Public Opinion. In Public Opinion, Lippman says that democracy is demo-crazy--public opinion is actually shaped by adverstisers and demogogues who can manipulate the public into thinking what ever they want. The people as a whole can’t make any decision that hasn’t already been made by sleezy Madison Ave. types. So Lippman says that instead the government should be led by experts, preferably scientitic and objective types who would be immune to propaganda. Instead of democracy romantically conceived, he suggested representation and political experts. Well this got Dewey’s goat and in The Public and its Problems, he responded to Lippmann’s view of democracy. Instead of relying on experts for democracy, Dewey recommends that “"it is not necessary that the many should have the knowledge and skill to carry on the needed investigations; what is required is that they have the ability to judge of the bearing of the knowledge supplied by others upon common concerns." Sure, he admitted, there could be ignorant publics swayed by propaganda, but the solution was not to toss the baby with the sludgewater--education was what the populace needed if they were to engage in participatory democracy. The Dewey Lippmann Debate has gotten a lot of press from recent rhetoricians. Search for it on Google scholar and you’ll find over a thousand entries since 2011. In the 2008 meeting of the Rhetorical Society of America, a “lively panel” discussion took place where, according to one witness “Jean Goodwin effectively advanced journalist Walter Lippmann’s critique of the “omnicompetent” citizen against Robert Asen’s John Dewey, who represented hope for collaborative dialogue.” And in the most recent meeting of the Modern Language Association, another scholar pointed out how the Lippmann-Dewey debate relates to the current expert-laden political rhetoric. A recent collection of essays on called Trained Capacities: John Dewey, Rhetoric, and Democratic Practice, Brian Jackson and Gregory Clark, eds. also reminds us of the perrential importance of asking ourselves “Are our citizens trained for democracy? Can they be?” The debate, so it seems, continues. The kind of education you would need to particpate in democracy includes not just information about the value of nuclear energy or the political history of the middle east: you need to have some sense of how you fit in to a democracy, what the moral obligations you have and what the society can provide you. For Dewey, America’s ideal model of civic engagement wasn’t a selfish, me-first mentality, but neither was it entirely collective and socialist. In Individualism Old and New, Dewey says it’s time to move past the old, rugged, wild-west homesteader kind of individualism that theAmericans he was writing to could possibly remember, or at least could remember stories of their parents and grandparents. while his audience of early 20th century Americans idealized that kind of independence, they were also increasingly aware of how to connect. The experience of world war have taught them that “Most social unifications come about in response to external pressure” (11) and “personal participation in the development of a shared culture” (17). Defining that interconnectivity against the struggles and hardships of war and poverty may seem intutive but the move from frontier rugged individualism to an individualism that recognizes our interconnectivitity is at the core of Dewey’s political philosophy.“Each of us needs to cultivate his own garden. But there is no fence around this garden” (82). Now just so you know that last week’s episode on the aesthetic of Dewey wasn’t totally separated fromt his sort of thing, Dewey also talked about how that “shared sulture” happens through art, and how this art educates, cultivating the skills that are necessary for democracy: “The art which our times needs in order to create a new type of individuality is the art which, being sensitive to the technology and science that are the moving force of our time, will envisage the expansive, the social culture which they may be made to serve” (49). Or, another way, “The work of art is the truly individual thing” (81). Even though this is the end of our Dewey Duo, if you have thoughts about John Dewey’s influence in rhetoric, art, politics, philosophy, or any of the many wonderful things he was invovled in, drop us a line at mererhetoricpodcast@gmail.com. Until then, go cultivate that fenceless garden, recognizing the capacity of those around you to contribute to a democracy made whole.

With so many superhero shows doing the rounds, it was easy to be cynical about Netflix and Marvel's Daredevil, yet free of network constraints, Drew Goddard and Steven S. DeKnight have been able to deliver an uncompromisingly 'gritty' take on the blind vigilante's origin story. Both Cox and D'onofrio have been knocking it out of the park as Murdoch and Fisk, with solid support from the likes of Deborah Ann Woll & Rosario Dawson. At the very least, it's Rob's favourite show of the year so far... also #NOT on regular TV, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt hits us like a rainbow coloured truck in the face and Community clings to life on Yahoo (just). Iain's taken Jon's advice and finally cracked into FX's The Americans and Rob totally binged through season 2 of Black Sails. Can he sell it to Iain though? That's the question. All this and more on another 'What's we haven't #NOT been watching' edition of the #NOTwatching Podcast!Disclaimer: Jon was actually on this show, but his track screwed up so we've had to edit his bits out. On March 30, 2014, we sat down with professionally good-looking news ace Paul D. (Hint: it fails to convey the abject misery of the DC Metro system.) Paul argues that the Russians can't feed themselves on nationalism; Aaron confuses 'The Americans' with 'The Blacklist'; and Stephen uses the phrase "banking sector" repeatedly.

Welcome back for another episode of Comrades, a weekly podcast dedicated to FX’s The Americans. This week, Jeff and Scott discuss the season two premiere of The Americans, coincidentally entitled “Comrades.” Elizabeth is back with the family and discovering that her loyalties are shifting from the Motherland to her children. We learn that Phillip and Elizabeth have KGB friends, Emmet and Leigh Anne, who have children of their own. Paige’s suspicions of her parents grow, leading her to one of the most scarring moments in her life. Stan’s hunt for the KGB couple has gone cold, while his passion for Nina continues to gain heat (ugh, Malchus, did you really just write that?). And we learn that Claudia hasn’t returned to Moscow after all. Episode 2 of Comrades has all of this, plus Jeff’s history lesson on stealth aircrafts, Scott’s love for Doctor Johnny Fever and his favorite episodes of WKRP in Cincinnati, and tangent about key parties. Learn more, subscribe, or contact us at www.southgatemediagroup.com. You can write to us at southgatemediagroup@gmail.com and let us know what you think. Be sure to rate us and review the episode. Welcome to “Comrades,” a weekly podcast devoted to the FX series, The Americans. Each week, Scott Malchus and Jeff Marsick will break down and discuss the latest episode of The Americans, a cloak and dagger drama starring Keri Russell (Felicity) and Matthew Rhys (Brothers and Sisters) as KGB agents posing as an American suburban married couple. Of course, if you’re here you already know this, as the show is entering its 2nd season! Our first episode takes a look back at The Americans first season (out on Blu-ray now), previews the upcoming season (which premieres on February 26th) and features the usual tangents that Scott goes off on, such as the great use of Pete Townshend’s “Rough Boys” and how editors accomplish the timing of image to music. We also have a Facebook page where you can interact with Jeff and Scott. Thanks for tuning in!
