For more, head over to: www.franexcell.com/ How to not fear saying ‘not yet'   The fear of saying no or ‘not yet' to something in case it's the wrong thing to do or you might miss out is a big one right?    I'm talking about this in a few contexts today for a couple of reasons.   Having just finished up an amazing launch for the very first round of The Mentorship I was thinking about this from two sides of the coin.   So we're going to talk about those two sides.    The fear of saying no to an ‘opportunity'.    And the fear of saying no to a potential client.   When we're talking about saying no to an opportunity that might mean several things.     That might mean saying no to doing a course, a programme or a mentor.   It may mean saying no to a speaking gig.   It could mean many things.   But when people are launching something we want we might get that oh so familiar activation in our bodies.    That tension.     That horrible feeling of ‘Oooooh I want this, but it's not the right time'.   Remember most marketing is meant to make you feel like it's the last time you will ever get that deal and you could be making a huge mistake unless you buy NOW!   That's fine when it's actually truthful.     If it's not, all it serves to do is play at your fear of missing out.     Your fear of being left behind.     Your fear of missing out on that one piece of information that could change everything for you.     Missing something that could be perfect for you….without giving you any context of if it's right for you right now based on your unique situation!   It might be right for you, it might be absolutely the perfect thing for you.  But are you going to get the most out of it if you do it right now?   Where are you at in your life? With your health? In your business?   There's a lot to be said for now or never of course.  If not now, when?    That's working with a different set of fears than what we're talking about and that's where good old self awareness comes in again.     The more you know yourself and your unconscious programming, the more you will be able to see the truth for yourself.   To be fair...I'm also a big fan of getting a bargain if it has lifetime access even if I know I can't do it right at that time.  Cool.  BUT...I know I'm disciplined enough to make sure I do go back to it and it sits on my scary brain dump to do list until I can see it become a priority.   All good.   What I'm talking about here is feeling GOOD making a decision that a programme, a course, a mentor might be a yes for you...but not right now!   This is of course easier to do when you have someone on a zoom or a call helping you figure out if it's the right thing for you based on the information you give them.   Who could you use as a sounding board if you don't have that?     Who could that person be for you to help you untangle the conscious thought process with the unconscious programming that might be screaming at you?   It's ok to say no, no matter how many times you're marketed to to make you feel otherwise.    You don't ever have to feel shame, guilt or anything else for something being a no for you right now.  If it's right, it'll happen.   We spoke to lots of people who will be perfect for The Mentorship, but not right now.  They might have too much on their plate, they might need to get something else in place before they can make the most of it, for lots of reasons.   But it felt good helping them make that decision.  Some even paid deposits for the next round!  So there was no feeling bad either way about it being a no for right now.   We know they'll be back when they're ready but we also know they aren't sitting at the other side clicking the sales page a million times, umming and ahhing over whether to do it.  That's a horrible feeling.   Back at the start of my business I was there MANY times.     I'm actually grateful now for every time I made a wrong investment (of which there were many!), or bought something before I was ready because it helped shape my values when it comes to selling my own services.  It helped me spot it in other people too and help me know when it's not the right time.   We have to not be afraid to potentially miss out on an opportunity sometimes.    Listen to the story that's underneath you not wanting to say no.     Or not feeling comfortable saying no.  Dig into that a little.     The more you do this the less of that tension you'll feel when you have to make a decision.  You'll know if it's a yes or a no in your body.  You'll feel it.   But here's the thing.    Once you DO make the decision, the tension lifts.     We might feel like if we say no we will ALWAYS be sitting in that tension and that feels unbearable.  We also think, if we don't buy the thing we want that can help us move towards or away from something...then we'll never have what we want.   But you can always ask the questions, ‘when will you be running this again?'    Same thing about opportunities that come your way.     It could be an amazing speaking gig but fall at exactly the wrong time for you.  You may have a bazillion other things going on and saying yes to the opportunity might affect how you show up for the things you already committed to.   So much of this is just learning the ability to check in with yourself and what you know is right.     The second side of the coin I want to talk about is not being afraid to say no to a potential client.   This is SUCH an important one.  I see so much fear around not taking on a potential client, or even letting an existing one go.   And again, it might be a ‘not yet' rather than a hard no but you need to meet your people where they're at.   Be honest and upfront if YOU don't think it might be the right time for them and have an honest discussion.  Make sure you're both on the same page and everything is out on the table.   This is why it's important to not get hung up on metrics, or chasing other people's goals as much as you can because when you do you'll make decisions that might not be right for you OR the client.   Why is that an issue?   If you have a client in your programme that's not ready yet for whatever reason...they aren't going to get the results or have the experience you could have given them if they were.    Simple as that.   It will feel like you'll be dragging them through it.   The reality is not everyone is ready or able to do the work required at the time you launch your stuff!   That's ok.   If you're running a group programme and you let that person who should be a ‘not yet' in it will affect the dynamic of the group.   It's not a reflection on you or your service.   It's like relationships right?  Better to not be in one than be in the wrong one!     So if you haven't listened to the recent episode on spidey senses, have a listen because they won't steer you wrong.  You know in your gut when something is right or not, so listen to it.   And just remember...It's ok to say no.    Fx

The best show on TV is on FX--well, FX on Hulu, that is. It's called Reservation Dogs, it was created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, and it is about four Indigenous kids from Oklahoma dreaming of escape to California. To discuss this funny, heartbreaking show, Paul and Arlo are joined by pop culture writer extraordinaire Nikki Stafford. The gang discusses the show's subtle storytelling, its incredible cast, the way Harjo and his team thread the needle between tragedy and comedy, and how this series breaks ground for mainstream Native representation in America. Episode 69 and GENERATION RIPE's interview is a revisit with Episode 30 guest: actress, writer, director, producer, and licensed therapist Shelley McLendon. Originally from Long Beach, California, Shelley McLendon has lived in the northwest for over 25 years.  She is known for writing sketch comedy as well as adapting cult movies into staged parodies that are performed to sold-out audiences. Discouraged by the auditions she was being called for, Shelley decided her best bet was to write her own material that would highlight her comedic chops. It was her staged adaptation of the 1989 Patrick Swayze film ROAD HOUSE which she co-wrote with fellow writer Courtenay Hameister back in 2010 that was the catalyst for her production company Bad Reputation Productions. With Bad Reputation Productions, she's become a driving force in Portland's comedy scene. Also a talented comedic actor, she's successfully made the jump into producing and directing other artists. With the opening of The Siren Theater in 2015, she's added a venue to her growing empire.Along with her performing art career, Shelley holds a Master's of Arts in Counseling and is a Licensed Professional Counselor with the State of Oregon.  In addition to private counseling, Shelley has worked with individuals and groups in alcohol/drug recovery, in college counseling centers and in community mental health agencies, and has taught courses in counseling and psychology as an adjunct university instructor. Also on Episode 69 Wendi and Dfernando catch up on things, like Wendi's booster Pfizer vaccine and binging on FX's AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN and the second part of Netflix's TIGER KING documentary series.  On THE RIPE REPORT there's sourdough bread turkey and Christmas time in New York City.  Watch Wendi and Dfernando and their TEAM GENERATION RIPE: Greg Covey, Shelley McLendon and Ponciana Badia on Season 7 Episode 2 of CELEBRITY FAMILY FEUD - now on ABC OnDemand and Hulu and on the GENERATION RIPE website.  Follow us on our Instagram: Wendi McLendon-CoveyDfernando ZarembaGENERATION RIPE... and our guest Shelley McLendon, The Siren Theater & her TwitterRemember to subscribe, rate & leave a review for GENERATION RIPEVisit Dfernando Zaremba's website: dfernandozaremba.com

What's Your Hook? How To Pitch Your Movie with Devo Cutler-Rubenstein - Ep #36

The first question to ask when you're preparing your pitch is, what do you want them to understand? Next is what's your hook, your personal story that will get and hold their attention. In this powerful episode, Devo Cutler-Rebenstein answers these questions as well as discussing how to get buyers to want to work with you, gap financing, digital marketing tools and more.Devo Cutler-Rubenstein's passion for storytelling and artistic expression brought her to California Institute of the Arts where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film and Television. While at Cal Arts she was selected to receive a grant from the Scottish Arts Council to attend Edinburgh Arts. Her documentary about this unique educational setting inspired her documentary film EDINBURGH ARTS, which aired in part on Grampian Television. Returning to Cal Arts, she had an opportunity to study with Alexander MacKenrick, where she wrote, produced and directed PEACOCK BLUES, a short film casting the as yet unknown Ed Harris and Annie Potts.Upon graduation Devo launched her career in the entertainment industry at Twentieth Century Fox, rising quickly up the ranks in story development. She was Director of Story Department for Sir Lew Grade's Marble Arch productions at CBS Studios. She helped design a new story department as Director, Literary Affairs at Columbia Pictures TV, and not long after became VP of Marketing and Promotion for Connoisseur Video. Simultaneously, she began to develop projects for theater under her banner New Play Productions and then partnered with Mary Saxon to form Cutler-Saxon Productions, with an eye to leverage small theatre as a vehicle for larger budget television and feature film projects.Currently as CEO and President of Noble House Entertainment, she continues to develop and produce multi-platform projects, in a career that has spanned over thirty years working within all aspects of the entertainment industry. She has developed over 500 projects under various production banners, including producing the feature film franchise THE SUBSTITUTE, for MGM, Live Entertainment and HBO, starring Tom Berenger and Treat Williams, respectively. Inspired by work she did with stand-up comedians coaching them on the development of one-person shows, she won a grant to co-produce and co-write with her husband, Scott Rubenstein (Star Trek: TNG, MacGyver, Night Court) the documentary NOT AFRAID TO LAUGH, about using comedy to heal cancer. The intimate documentary won The Communicator Award and was nominated for a Peabody Award, now archived in the Chicago Museum of Broadcasting for its "artistic excellence, social relevance and historical significance." As a narrative director, she helped out on another award-winning documentary, TELL ABOUT THE SOUTH, which aired on PBS; she helped cast and the documentary was shot entirely on locations in South Carolina and Virginia. Adapting a John Irving short story, she competed and won a grant from Chanticleer Films/The Discovery Program to write and direct a narrative short, which she co-wrote with her husband, Scott Rubenstein, who also exec produced; the short film starred Poppy Montgomery, Bill Forsythe and Tony Plana and won Best Film at Moondance Film Festival and aired on Showtime Television. A writer at her core, Devo continues to pursue a creative outlet as a published poet, short story writer, and as a member of the Writers' Guild of America, West. She has written and/or produced film and television projects for ABC, Columbia Pictures, FX, Showtime, MGM, Live Entertainment, Fries Entertainment, Interscope Entertainment, among others. Her desire to promote cultural diversity was acknowledged by a NALIP Screenwriting Fellowship, and in 2015, Devo fulfilled a lifelong dream and received a Master's in Professional Writing from the University of Southern California, Dornsife College of Letters, Arts & Sciences.

Email me at hello@franexcell.com with any questions or take aways! For more, head over to: www.franexcell.com/ How Do You Treat Yourself On The Down Days?   How do you treat yourself on the down days?  The off days, the ones where you just feel like you're in a bit of a funk and you might not even be sure why.   This is actually a really important question and the answer is not to be underestimated.   The way you treat yourself and talk to yourself when you're feeling a way that you don't want to, or feel you ‘shouldn't' is key to so much.   It's easier to show ourselves compassion when we're having a good run of things.   It's easier to be nice to ourselves when we feel we're doing a good job.   But what about the days that you don't?   What do you tend to do?     What do you tend to think to yourself and say to yourself?   How does it make you feel?   We're always going to have days where things go wrong, or not the way we wanted them to.    We're always going to have days where people might let us down.   We're always going to have days where it feels a bit much, or we've worked ourselves too hard.   We're always going to have days where we may not have slept enough or our hormones may be running wild, or the moon is full or mercury is in retrograde...whatever it may be!   I used to be the queen of being nasty to myself in my own head.  And out loud.    I felt frustrated with myself.  I wished I was different. In all honesty I made myself a bit of a victim.  Even though it was absolutely of my own making.   But it didn't make me feel good.   It didn't help me get out of a funk.   The thing I didn't know back then was how it was creating more of the same.   How I was talking to myself was signalling to my brain to show me more evidence that it was true.   I bought into the idea that you ‘shouldn't' have bad days.  It's just an extension of so many peoples conditioning that we aren't supposed to ever feel down or feel our emotions and it's just so damaging.   We're human beings and there are natural ebbs and flows in our days, weeks, months and years.    Seasonal shifts that may have an effect.   Monthly cycles that may have an effect.   I'd LOVE for people to let go of the notion that working on yourself means you're never going to have a bad day.   If anyone tries to sell you that, run a mile!   It's about how you SEE those down days.   How you handle them.   How you treat yourself through them.   How long you allow them to last.   How you judge yourself for having them.   We've got to stop trying to live up to unrealistic expectations in all facets of our lives.  It's important that people are more honest with the realities of just being a human!    A down day is an opportunity.   It's an opportunity to appreciate the good ones and really recognise them for what they are.   It's an opportunity to practice gratitude, even when you're not feeling it!   It's an opportunity to listen to what your brain and your body are trying to communicate to you.   It's not about it being anything ‘wrong' with you.   It's about learning to listen.   It's about living with curiosity over judgement.   What might be going on for you right now?    Might you be doing something you don't really want to do?  Or could it be highlighting something to be healed or reframed?   Can you name the emotion? And can you hear any judgments coming through about you having it?  How are you talking to yourself?   And what do you tend to do? What behaviour do you exhibit?  For me it was always lounging on the sofa with snacks.  Or it might be trying to ‘push through it'.  Maybe sitting at my desk trying to force myself to work and not getting very far.  When actually what I needed to do was take a step back.   Now my steps are to listen, identify what might be going on and why, get curious, allow myself grace to be human.  Self compassion.  Identify and sit with the emotion. Go do something different. Understand my coping strategies (snapping at loved ones, going for junk food) so I'm aware and can consciously choose something different.   Self compassion is absolutely something that can be learned. But you won't get anywhere without awareness first.    Identifying your thoughts, your inner self talk, your behaviours. Don't let that stuff stay unconscious.   If your best friend was telling you they felt exactly the way you feel and were saying the things to themselves that you say to yourself...what would you tell them?   Can you extend that to yourself?   Fx

In the Envelope: An Awards Podcast

Beanie Feldstein, a theater kid through and through, now finds herself a veritable film and TV star. While the approach to stage and screen might differ, her philosophy is always the same: her most inspired work stems from bonding with collaborators who can't help but become family. “Every opportunity is going to fill you up in certain ways and deplete you in certain ways,” she says. “I always just feel like I can go my deepest and do my best if I know the people around me.” Born in Los Angeles in a family of Hollywood professionals (including brother Jonah Hill), Elizabeth Greer a.k.a. Beanie grew up performing community theater and studying at the Stagedoor Manor theater camp before attending Wesleyan University. Her breakout roles in “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” and the SAG-nominated “Lady Bird” led to an award-winning turn opposite Kaitlyn Dever in Olivia Wilde's “Booksmart,” as well as “How to Build a Girl” and guest appearances on “The Simpsons,” “Grey's Anatomy,” and “What We Do in the Shadows.” This year she portrayed Monica Lewinsky and produced FX's “Impeachment: American Crime Story,” and starred in A24's adaptation of “The Humans” from Stephen Karam. Up next, Beanie will feature in the years-long filming of Richard Linklater's “Merrily We Roll Along” and return to Broadway, after “Hello Dolly!”, to play Fanny Brice in “Funny Girl” this spring. Television's Jenn Lyon is beautiful and famous; from the outside looking in, she seems to have it all. But Ms. Lyon has a serious eating disorder that, while in recovery, still impacts her daily life. Join us as the “Claws” star shares her lifelong struggle with food and dieting. We also discuss how the smoke and mirrors of Hollywood contribute to diet culture and how that culture affects every aspect of American life — especially for women. Visit the official episode page here to learn more -- or read the transcript. Guest Bio Jenn Lyon stars as Jennifer in the hit TNT series “CLAWS,” opposite Niecy Nash, returning for its fourth and final season this December.    Jenn has graced both stage and screen, starring opposite the likes of Timothy Olyphant in “Hold On To Me Darling,” and as his love interest in FX's “Justified,” (seasons three and four). She also starred opposite George Lopez and Danny Trejo in the sitcom “Saint George.” Having struggled for many years with an eating disorder that almost ended her life, Jenn has become a tremendous advocate for mental health; she serves as an activist for NEDA, as well as The Loveland Foundation (an organization that provides healing and opportunities to women and girls of color). Jenn also sits on the board for Martha Plimpton's A is For (a nonprofit organization that advocates for women's reproductive rights), and volunteers for Black Women Lead. In her spare time, she works at a food pantry in Brooklyn twice a week. Aside from her on-camera talents, Jenn is also a writer/producer/co-founder of internet sketch group POYKPAC, which has produced sketches with more than 100 million views to date. They have written for and been seen on MTV, IFC, G4, CBS, and CNN. Find Jenn on Instagram and at jennlyon.net.
