‘Now You See Us: Women Artists in Britain 1520-1920' is an ambitious group show at TATE BRITAIN that charts the 400 year long journey that it took for women to become recognised as professional artists which paved the way for future generations and established what it meant to be a woman in the British art world.  On Tuesday 14 May 2024, at the Press View of the exhibition ‘Now You See Us:  Women Artists in Britain 1520-1920', RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey was joined by Tim Batchelor, Assistant Assistant Curator of the exhibition, to find out more about the 400 year journey that it took for women to become recognised as professional Artists along with an insight into the work of some of the 100 Women Artists featured in the exhibition. About the exhibition ‘Expressionists - Kandinsky, Münter And The Blue Rider' - The exhibition ‘Now You See Us: Women Artis in Britain 1520-1920' covers the period in which women were visibly working as professional artists, but went against societal expectations to do so. Featuring over 100 artists, the exhibition will celebrate well-known names such as Artemisia Gentileschi, Angelica Kauffman, Julia Margaret Cameron and Gwen John, alongside many others who are only now being rediscovered. Their careers were as varied as the works they produced: some prevailed over genres deemed suitable for women like watercolour landscapes and domestic scenes. Others dared to take on subjects dominated by men like battle scenes and the nude, or campaigned for equal access to training and membership of professional institutions. Tate Britain will showcase over 200 works, including oil painting, watercolour, pastel, sculpture, photography and ‘needlepainting' to tell the story of these trailblazing artists. ‘Now You See Us' begins at the Tudor court with Levina Teerlinc, many of whose miniatures will be brought together for the first time in four decades, and Esther Inglis, whose manuscripts contain Britain's earliest known self-portraits by a woman artist. The exhibition will then look to the 17th century. Focus will be given to one of art history's most celebrated women artists, Artemisia Gentileschi, who created major works in London at the court of Charles I, including the recently rediscovered Susannah and the Elders 1638-40, on loan from the Royal Collection for the very first time. The exhibition will also look to women such as Mary Beale, Joan Carlile and Maria Verelst who broke new ground as professional portrait painters in oil. In the 18th century, women artists took part in Britain's first public art exhibitions, including overlooked figures such as Katherine Read and Mary Black; the sculptor Anne Seymour Damer; and Margaret Sarah Carpenter, a leading figure in her day but little heard of now. The show will look at Angelica Kauffman and Mary Moser, the only women included among the Founder Members of the Royal Academy of Arts; it took 160 years for membership to be granted to another woman. Women artists of this era are often dismissed as amateurs pursuing ‘feminine' occupations like watercolour and flower painting, but many worked in these genres professionally: needlewoman Mary Linwood, whose gallery was a major tourist attraction; miniaturist Sarah Biffin, who painted with her mouth, having been born without arms and legs; and Augusta Withers, a botanical illustrator employed by the Horticultural Society. The Victorian period saw a vast expansion in public exhibition venues. Now You See Us will showcase major works by critically appraised artists of this period, including Elizabeth Thompson's monumental The Roll Call 1874 (Thompson's work prompted critic John Ruskin to retract his statement that “no women could paint”), and nudes by Henrietta Rae and Annie Swynnerton, which sparked both debate and celebration.  The exhibition will also look at women's connection to activism, including Florence Claxton's satirical ‘Woman's Work': A Medley 1861 which will be on public display for the first time since it was painted; and an exploration of the life of Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon, an early member of the Society of Female Artists who is credited with the campaign for women to be admitted to the Royal Academy Schools. On show will be the student work of women finally admitted to art schools, as well as their petitions for equal access to life drawing classes. With the exhibition ending in the early 20th century with women's suffrage and the First World War. Women artists like Gwen John, Vanessa Bell and Helen Saunders played an important role in the emergence of modernism, abstraction and vorticism, but others, such as Anna Airy, who also worked as a war artist, continued to excel in conventional traditions. The final artists in the show, Laura Knight and Ethel Walker, offer powerful examples of ambitious, independent, confident professionals who achieved critical acclaim and finally membership of the Royal Academy. ‘Now You See Us - Women Artists in Britain 1520-1920' continues at TATE BRITAIN until 13  October 2024.  Description tours are available for blind and partially sighted people but need to be booked in advance via hello@tate.org.uk or on 020 7887 8888. I am so excited to say that my guest on the GWA Podcast is one of the most brilliant writers around today, Lauren Elkin! On today's episode we speak about feminist pioneers, Carolee Schneemann and Hannah Wilke!! Elkin is an American in London who has lived and spent extensive time in Paris, Liverpool, Tokyo, Venice and New York – as outlined in one of my favourite of her books, Flaneuse, which sees her trace cities through the eyes and steps of female writers and artists as the feminine “flaneur”, one who walks aimlessly. She is excellent at making her own a term or a trait previously steeped in patriarchal meaning. The author of four books, and the translator of others – including of Simone de Beauvoir's unpublished novel, The Inseparables – Elkin has received numerous awards for her writing. She has been a cultural critic for the likes of the New York Times, Harpers, London Review of Books, TLS, Frieze, and more; holds a PhD in English; an M.Phil in French; and is currently working on biographies on the likes of avant-garde tastemaker Getrude Stein and artist Louise Bourgeois. But! One of the reasons why we are speaking with Elkin today is because she has recently published a fantastic book, Art Monsters, which looks at a variety of female artists – from Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun to Laura Knight; Betye Saar to Carolee Schneemann; Eva Hesse and Hannah Wilke; Kara Walker and Maria Lassnig – who have centred their practice around the body. From Iraq and Afghanistan and news headlines today back to earlier battles in the Spanish Civil War and World War Two, the relationship between war, photography and the press has affected attitudes towards conflicts. In the annual Remembrance discussion organised in partnership with the Imperial War Museum, Free Thinking presenter Anne McElvoy's panel are: Toby Haggith Senior Curator, Department of Second World War and Mid 20th Century Conflict; Irish Iraqi artist Jananne Al-Ani, whose work explores surveillance, aerial reconnaissance and exodus after warfare; Charlie Calder-Potts, who was an official war artist with the British Army in Afghanistan 2013/14; and Caroline Brothers, author of War and Photography: A Cultural History. The Blavatnik Art, Film and Photography Galleries at IWM London include around 500 works from the museum collections including John Singer Sargent's painting Gassed, Steve McQueen's response to the 2003 war in Iraq, Queen and Country, and works by artists including Paul Nash, Laura Knight, Peter Jackson, Olive Edis and Omer Fast. Charlie Calder-Potts works with aluminium, wasli, wood panel and vellum (calf skin); combining photography, painting and drawing and has worked in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Iran and Russia. Jananne Al-Ani is an Irish Iraqi artist who teaches at the University of the Arts London. Her video piece Timelines which was on display at the Towner Art Gallery Eastbourne last year and has recently been seen at the Ab-Anbar Gallery, London, explores Armistice Day 1918 in the town of al-Hindayyah in what is now modern-day Iraq. Today's Mold Talks Heroes guest is Laura Knight, a parenting educator, author, mom of two, and mold survivor. During the episode, Laura explains how mold exposure impacted her children and herself and how she came to realize that this fungus was the root cause of their chronic health issues. While she never would have expected their home to be struggling with a mold issue, it turned out to be highly contaminated and had been for years. Over a year later, their home has now been remediated, and they are all working towards detoxing. She's now using all of her knowledge and experience to help others who are suffering through similar experiences. As a parenting educator, she helps parents bring calm into their homes and quell the chaos with practical, easy-to-use parenting tools that are effective and yield lasting results. But her mission as a parenting educator doesn't stop there: she wants to raise awareness and provide support for major issues and problems that many people are unaware of, such as mold toxicity.In this episode:0:30: Laura explains how she was impacted by mold and the effect it had on her young child. At first, doctors thought it was PANS, but Laura felt this wasn't the right answer. “I can kind of chuckle now because we're passed it now, but the truth is that it was traumatizing.”2:30: Laura details how she and her family were tested for mold, leading to them testing their home. “It didn't smell. It wasn't what you think of when you picture a moldy home. There was nothing that looked wrong with our house at all. 3:45: Laura describes her first thoughts when the functional medicine doctor first suggested that mold might be the underlying cause of her child's health conditions. 8:15: Laura goes through the remediation process and the extensive amount of decontamination that was required. “Our house required over a year's worth of remediation.” 10:30: Laura details how quickly her child recovered after moving out of the toxic environment and the detoxing process they adhered to. She also explains how she and other members of the family recovered and the processes they followed. “Mold is tricky because it needs to bind to something.”16:15: Laura explains how she practices mindfulness to help get through traumatic events like mold toxicity and how she uses her knowledge to help others going through similar situations. 18:15: Laura details how situations like mold exposure can impact parenting and the effect it can have on a child's mental state. Talk Art is back for SEASON 13!!!! Woohooo!!!We meet leading artist Caroline Walker.Walker's paintings reveal the diverse social, cultural and economic experiences of women living in contemporary society. Drawing on her own photographic source material, Walker provides a unique window into the everyday lives of women. Blurring the boundary between objectivity and lived experience, Walker highlights often overlooked jobs performed by women and the psychologically charged spaces they inhabit. Walker explains: “The subject of my paintings in its broadest sense is women's experience, whether that is the imagined interior life of a glimpsed shop worker, a closely observed portrayal of my mother working in the family home, or women I've had the privilege of spending time with in their place of work. From the anonymous to the highly personal, what links all these subjects is an investigation of an experience which is specifically female.”Caroline Walker was born in 1982 in Dunfermline, Scotland. She lives and works in London.Blurring the boundary between objectivity and lived experience, the artist highlights often overlooked jobs performed by women and the psychologically charged spaces they inhabit.Previously encompassing locations such as Los Angeles, Palm Springs and the UK, Walker's scenes hint at the complexity of her subjects' lives whilst completely avoiding narrative resolution. Recent works have seen Walker cast her eye to her immediate surroundings in East London, reflecting on her wider community and the significance of encounters with anonymous individuals who are nevertheless integral to our daily existence. Often exploring the notion of ‘women's work', the artist captures specific spaces such as pharmacies, tailors, beauty salons, laboratories, bathhouses and modernist apartments.Walker presented a new body of large-scale paintings at the historic Fitzrovia Chapel in February 2022. The works were created following her residency at University College Hospital's maternity wing, during which the artist shadowed female midwives, nurses, doctors and cleaners. Sketches from the series were displayed by UCLH Arts at Street Gallery, London and the project was accompanied by an illustrated catalogue.Examples will also be included as part of a two-person presentation with Laura Knight at Nottingham Castle in March 2022.KM21, The Hague hosted ‘Windows', a significant solo exhibition of the artist's work in August 2021. An expansive show of Walker's preparatory studies and large-scale paintings titled ‘Women's Work' opened in May 2021 at Midlands Art Centre (MAC), Birmingham, UK. She features in the Hayward Gallery touring exhibition ‘British Art Show 9' in 2022. Walker's first solo show at Stephen Friedman Gallery, London will take place in April 2022, focussing on the artist's sister-in-law Lisa and her experience of motherhood. Walker obtained an MA in painting from Royal College of Art, London in 2009 and a BA (Hons) from Glasgow School of Art in 2004.
