Why did Walt Disney have Herb Ryman's E.P.C.O.T.'s concept art altered from the original version? In this episode of Distory, we go back in time to explore the E.P.C.O.T. that never was, Walt Disney's original vision for the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. After exploring the influence of Victor Gruen on Walt's plans, we move through the city step-by-step, finding nooks and crannies of previously unexplored history along the way courtesy of a Distory listener's exclusive interview with Imagineer George McGinnis. Along the way, we find some not-so-magical policies that the average American wouldn't particularly like, a pub that pays homage to a Disney animation hangout, and a lost airport that can still (sort of) be found at Walt Disney World today. How did Walt's past impact his decision to create an experimental community of tomorrow? In this episode of Distory, we begin a new series exploring the origins of EPCOT, beginning with Walt Disney's Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. But before we dive into the details of this utopian city, we have to give some context behind WHY Walt would want to create a city when he had spent most of his life focused on animation, movies, and theme parks. From explaining Disney's impact on urban planning to understanding Walt's legacy, this introspective episode delves into the mind of Walt to help us understand why E.P.C.O.T. was so important to him. Kate also gives us some rabbit-hutch insight into the world of Disney's Hyperion studio, Kirk shares an unusual source of funding for CalArts, and we discuss how project timelines in the Disney parks have changed from 1955 to the present day. Two new features at Walt Disney World including appearances by Walt Disney and the Hatbox Ghost. Which of these is a bigger draw and were the implementations up to par? The Hatbox Ghost is Now Haunting the Haunted Mansion at Walt Disney WorldThe Hatbox Ghost has (finally) returned to the Haunted Mansion, but is this incarnation a hit or a miss? Where to Find the Hatbox Ghost in the Walt Disney World Haunted MansionThe Hatbox Ghost appears next to the Endless Hallway, in the spot previously occupied by the Donald Duck chair. The ghost appears through a cobalt blue glass-paned door. If you appreciate Disney detail, pay attention to the muddy footprints that mark the Hatbox Ghost's path as he arranges his cart of hatboxes and luggage. The scene is lit by the "moon" and the warm glow of a dim lantern and you will come face-to-face with the Hatbox Ghost from your doom buggy, as he entertains you with his trademark trick of displacing his head from his shoulders to hit hatbox. To create the perfect ambiance, Disney Imagineers tinkered with the Haunted Mansion lighting and paint both in the queue and inside the mansion. While the implementation of the Hatbox Ghost in the Magic Kingdom Haunted Mansion isn't quite how it was described at D23 (which is becoming an unfortunate trend), it is still a nice addition to the mansion. -- Walt the Dreamer Statue Unveiled at World Celebration GardensIn celebration of Walt Disney's birthday on December 5, EPCOT opened Dreamers Point in the new World Celebration neighborhood. The area features a brand new statue called "Walt the Dreamer," which will become an instant trademark photo spot. The statue was modelled after Walt Disney as he appeared later in life, specifically around the time when he was dreaming up the overall Florida Project and the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. This is a nice and thoughtful touch. This new Walt Disney statues is one of many areas to visit within World Celebration Gardens. where guests will be able to relax, unwind, and connect — to EPCOT, to nature and to each other. Each of the gardens connect back to the areas surrounding them, drawing on the original circular hub design plans for EPCOT. Some say it is a confusing and congested design, while others applaud the oasis of shade that will increase as the foliage grows (something that EPCOT desperately needs).--Thank You for Listening to the Disney Travel PodcastThank you very much for listening to this episode, Amelia and I hope that you enjoyed it. Matt Lowry, LPP and Dr. Angela Lauria and explore the life and legacy (and Autistic traits) of one of the most prominent figures in the history of animation and entertainment: Walt Disney. Was he on the autism spectrum? Join us on a virtual culture trip as we dive in!Walt Disney had a difficult childhood, having to work to support his family from age 9. He found escape and joy in visiting an amusement park called Electric Park. As an adult, Walt Disney became obsessed with building his own theme parks, pouring all his energy into envisioning and planning Disneyland and Walt Disney World. He loved trains and incorporated them extensively into his parks.Walt had intense focus when interested in something (something Autistic people know all about!), but lost interest in his animation business as he became consumed with his theme park dreams. He wanted total creative control.“Yeah, but like when you have a way and you can see it and you're sure it'll work and all you have to do is get everyone on board and then it doesn't work—that is like such a devastating feeling. Like when you can get people on board, it's an amazing feeling”. –AngelaWhile his work brings joy to millions of people around the world, there are some darker aspects of his legacy that are not as well-known, including alleged associations with anti-semites and Nazi sympathizers—including an association with Leni Riefenstahl, the propaganda filmmaker for Hitler's regime.Disney struggled to understand why his employees were unhappy with some of his hyper-controlling policies around their compensation and treatment. He took it very personally when they went on strike. The podcast hosts also discuss his controversial attitudes towards race, gender, and labor unions and try to make sense of how autism might have influenced the good and the bad aspects of Disney's legacy.“So he decided oh I've got a lockdown on that I must have lots of control over things so this will never ever ever happen again, which became a theme throughout his life of, ‘I will no longer be bamboozled, I will be the bamboozler.'” —MattWalt Disney died before Disney World opened, but his vision for an Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT) inspired aspects of it. We follow Walt Disney's vision for Disney World and how it differed from what was eventually built. You can see his vision on YouTube at this link https://youtu.be/sLCHg9mUBag. Walt intended Disney World as a gift to the world. He hoped to partner with industry and others to create his Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT's original name). He envisioned people from all over the world coming to Disney World to see state-of-the-art community development integrating commercial, housing, industry, and ecologically beneficial elements. While Walt's vision wasn't built, it can inspire us today to evaluate our dreams and contributions to society--and act to let them work. On this the 40th anniversary of Epcot, I feel it well to ask the question: "What is Epcot?" For most every Disney fan out there, the answer is Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. We explore what that means and what its implication is to the world we live in today. Beyond the idea of a physical city, or an eventual world's fair-style experience, I believe that Epcot is more than a brick and mortar theme park. In this Disney at Work episode, I want to consider the notion that Epcot constitutes a permanent message and celebration of ideas for a better world. We'll even see examples of that play out in recent new attractions like Remy's Ratatouille Adventure and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. Join us as we celebrate Epcot's 40th anniversary with a treatise on the universal themes regarding a Community of Tomorrow.

Welcome to the October 2022 episode of The Great British Mickey Waffle. This month we are raising a glass to celebrate the 40th birthday of one of our favourite parks. Whether you think of it as EPCOT Center, Epcot, or just ‘that park with the big golf ball', there really is nowhere else like it. Becca takes us back to the park's opening on 1 October 1982. It was very different from Walt's original vision of the ‘Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow', but there were already some attractions in place which we still enjoy today. Any guesses on which ones? And how did the park change over its first decade? (Let's just say the word ‘Horizons' features strongly!) Claire moves us on into the 1990s, and meets a certain purple dragon and his friend. Plus you can find out about a Surprise in the Sky which seems to have had a lasting impact, and also how Epcot marked the millennium with a controversial wand. Peter picks up the story in 2002 with the introduction of Soarin' and a drive with some crash test dummies, as well as changes to Figment's journey. There are memories of the last days of Innoventions, including the Sum of All Thrills and its giant piggy bank. Finally, Ben is our guide from 2012 back to the present, with a look back at Agent P's adventure (sorry if you are now singing the theme tune all day) .We go ‘back, back, over the falls' to Maelstrom, dine with princesses and talk about food and fireworks. We end with a look at the park's newest ride before we raise a toast – and of course cake – to 40 years of a unique and well-loved park. Listener Appreciation DayThe Walt Disney World Resort, also called Walt Disney World and Disney World, is an entertainment resort complex in Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, Florida, United States, near the cities of Orlando and Kissimmee. Opened on October 1, 1971, the resort is owned and operated by Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, a division of The Walt Disney Company. It was first operated by the Walt Disney World Company. The property covers nearly 25,000 acres (39 sq mi; 101 km2), of which half has been used.[4] The resort comprises four theme parks(consisting of the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and Disney's Animal Kingdom), two water parks, 27 themed resort hotels, nine non-Disney hotels, several golf courses, a camping resort, and other entertainment venues, including the outdoor shopping center Disney Springs.Designed to supplement Disneyland in Anaheim, California, which had opened in 1955, the complex was developed by Walt Disney in the 1960s. "The Florida Project", as it was known, was intended to present a distinct vision with its own diverse set of attractions. Walt Disney's original plans also called for the inclusion of an "Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow" (EPCOT), a planned community intended to serve as a testbed for new city-living innovations. Walt Disney died on December 15, 1966, during the initial planning of the complex. After his death, the company wrestled with the idea of whether to bring the Disney World project to fruition. However, Walt's older brother, Roy, came out of retirement to make sure Walt's biggest dream was realized. Construction started in 1967, with the company instead building a resort similar to Disneyland, abandoning the experimental concepts for a planned community. The Magic Kingdom was the first theme park to open in the complex, in 1971, followed by Epcot (1982), Disney's Hollywood Studios (1989), and Disney's Animal Kingdom (1998). It was Roy who insisted the name of the entire complex be changed from Disney World to Walt Disney World, ensuring that people would remember that the project was Walt's dream.

Ep.13:The History of the Holidays in The Magic Kingdom and EPCOT. Happy Holidays Everyone..... This episode is the first in a series of Disney History episodes that we are excited to share. We wanted to give a different take on areas of Disney history that have been covered by others as we really wanted an excuse to dive deep into the lore that is Disney.    Since the opening of Magic Kingdom in 1971, Christmas has been an annual celebration. Disney shares the spirit of Christmas with a massive tree covered in oversized ornaments and thousands of sparkling lights, store fronts adorned with garland, enormous wreaths, and window displays showing the magic being sold inside each shop.On December 12th, 1971 the Orlando Sentinel newspaper announced: “Walt Disney World’s first Christmas will be a spirited two-week holiday full of gaiety, tradition, colorful Disney character parades, and commemorative religious pageantry of the season. Yuletide decorations will bring added sparkle to the already fun-filled Magic kingdom — ‘decked out’ literally for Christmas with a giant tree and hundreds of wreaths of hemlock and holly.“Special daily Holiday Parades (beginning December 20) and two mammoth candlelight processionals are part of the spectacular events scheduled for the holidays.  “Florally adorned by poinsettias, snapdragons, petunias and 50,000 pansies, the theme park will feature lights and decorations in each of the Main Street shop windows. And in Town Square, a snowy, 50-foot Christmas tree, especially selected and cut from a forest in Paradise, Michigan, will serve as a colorful centerpiece for the festive theme park celebration. More than 1,200 lights and a thousand giant ornaments adorn the tree.” This excited future guests who planned on visiting during the inaugural holiday season at The Magic Kingdom. With admission to the park running $4.75 which included 7-ride tickets and transportation,  guests filled the 1500-rooms between the Contemporary and Polynesian resorts to capacity for the two weeks leading up to Christmas. With an exception to Christmas day the park was opened from 9am till midnight and a holiday parade featuring  “marching toy soldiers, dancing reindeer, marching bands, girls playing glockenspiels and 50 famous Disney characters came to life.” Disney legend Charlie Ridgway who at the time was Disney's press agent and oversaw the public relations department of the company stated that the first year the Magic Kingdom was opened “Our 1,500 rooms in the Contemporary and the Polynesian were booked up for a year. Attendance (at Magic Kingdom) increased steadily. It rose to 600,000 in (the month of) December. Hours were extended to midnight for the Christmas holidays. For three successive days at Christmastime, the gate total approached 70,000.”For the inaugural holiday season Disney began their  first holiday parade on December 20th. It ran every day until January 2nd and was complete with marching toy soldiers, dancing reindeer, school marching bands, and 50 of Disney’s famous characters and of course jolly old Saint Nick. This parade was similar to the parade that ran simultaneously in Disneyland during the holiday season.  Another special event that started during the first year of Magic Kingdoms Holiday Celebration was the Candlelight Processional.  Starting at Disneyland in 1958, The Candlelight Processional became an honored tradition. Singers from The University of Southern California along with local choirs were joined by school bands and performed in Town Square with a celebrity narrator who performed a dramatic reading of the Christmas story.  Dennis Morgan, an American actor and singer, held this position from 1961 to 1964, and Dick Van Dyke took on the honor in 1965 to promote Mary Poppins. Like in Disneyland, the show was performed in front of the Walt Disney World Railroad Main Street USA Station in Town Square. The show took place on two nights, December 18th and 19th, at 6pm with 1200 carolers and Rock Hudson, another American actor, performing the narration both nights. Frederick Fennell conducted the orchestra and boys’ choirs made up the Christmas tree.   The Candlelight Processional was moved to Epcot in 1994 after guests expressed that they wanted more shows. The America Gardens Theater in The American Adventure Pavilion, was capable of holding larger audiences of around 1000 guests becoming the dedicated location for such a performance. There were 30 performances that year spanning 15 nights, and the show was expanded even more in 1994 with 60 performances across 30 nights. This year, 2019, 108 performances are scheduled across 36 nights. Performances run nightly from November 29 through December 30, 2019.  Dating back to Dec 16th, 1983 Disney hosted its first special ticketed Holiday event Mickeys Very Merry Christmas Party. This started a yearly tradition for Disney inviting guests who purchased a special event ticket to join the merry fun throughout the park. With special stops along Mainstreet and throughout the various lands of the park,  hot chocolate and a variety of cookies are handed out included with admission. Along with the variety of "free" goodies Disney also releases exclusive merchandise and snacks that can only be purchased for guests who attend the party.  The festivities begin at 7pm each night of the event and the "Snoap" begins to fall.  Being in Florida, a state that has seen snow fall less then a handful of times in the last 100 years, Disney has created a magical addition of "snoap" which gives guests visiting the party that feeling of a white Christmas. Throughout the years Disney has perfected the art of "Snoap Fall" including this years party with what seems to be the first ever "snoap blizzard" ,  There's a bit of science behind the magic of snoap and according to Steve Zigmont of Zigmont Magic FX, the company that creates artificial snow for Disney World in Florida,  these aren't your typical suds. "To call it a bubble is like calling David Copperfield’s work tricks... or just calling Broadway community theater," he said. Zigmont said "the bubbles in fake snow are a complex feat of engineering that result in long lasting, residue-free flakes. It starts with a liquid that is mostly water and something called a surfactant. Surfactants are naturally occurring compounds that give substances like water a lower surface tension, which means less tension is needed for the substance to form a surface." Along with the magical snoap Cinderella's castle comes alive as Elsa, Anna and Olaf pay Magic Kingdom a visit.  Olaf, along with the help from the guests watching, encourage Elsa to change the castle into a magical Ice Castle.  This effect is created by the use of 3D projection mapping technology along with thousands of white lights and a changing hue of teal and purple projected lights.  The special lighting  happens daily at 6:15and then again around 8:15 on party nights. Since the inception of the Holiday Dream Lights, this version of Cinderella's Castle is a favorite amongst guests. Starting November 8th of this year an all new firework display made its debut with“Minnie’s Wonderful Christmastime Fireworks.” . In addition to the fireworks is Mickey's Once Upon A Christmastime Parade.  This parade that has seen its updates and name changes over the year.  it Debuted in 1994 as Mickeys Very Merry Christmas Parade and entertained crowds up until 2007 when its name was changed to its current one. During the first week of December Disney  films a special parade at The Magic Kingdom specifically for television which airs on ABC Christmas Day. The very first year this parade aired is was hosted by Joan Lunden and Michael Douglas and has  aired annually since 1983 with the only exception being in 2000 when Disney aired a Christmas Eve "Tracking Santa" special instead. In 1999, a nighttime version of the parade was shown on Christmas Day for the first time. Over the years, the television program has gone through a number of name changes. During the 1980s and 90s, the program was known as The Walt Disney World Very Merry Christmas Parade. The program's name was then changed to Walt Disney World Christmas Day Parade. From 2009 through 2013, the program was referred to as the Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade. For a few years after that, the program's name would change on a yearly basis, being known as Disney Parks Frozen Christmas Celebration in 2014, Disney Parks Unforgettable Christmas Celebration in 2015, Disney Parks Magical Christmas Celebration in 2016 and 2017, and finally Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade in 2018. The tradition continues with the newest rendition airing on Christmas day 2019. As Walt Disney World's annual attendance expanded so did their footprint. In 1982 The Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow or EPCOT opened its gates and offered visitors an all new theme park that  became a must do when visiting Walt Disney World.  Riding the coat tails of Magic Kingdom,  Disney knew they needed to spice things up at Epcot to give guests a reason to stay into the evening.    I’m Dreaming of a “Green” Christmas . . . The 1,500 Christmas trees at Walt Disney World Resort won’t be the only “green” holiday delights each season as each Walt Disney World resort hotel glows with new “conservation” lighting — more than 700,000 LED lights in all. String the bulbs end to end and the strand would stretch for 96 miles or light the path from Jacksonville to Orlando, all while using 1/10th of the power of traditional incandescent bulbs. Beginning November 2007, for the first time, the "Castle Dream Lights", with over 200,000 LED Christmas light citations  (Web view)

Today, I’m going to do you another kindness. I’m listing for you, my Top Three (3) Attractions in Epcot. In addition to that, I’ll also give you my strategy for getting on these attractions. Ie., use fast pass, arrive early, or use general attraction waiting. Before we get started, let me just provide you with an Epcot overview. Epcot stands for the Experimental Prototype City of Tomorrow. Well, that’s what Walt called it when he first introduced it to the public. He quickly corrected himself to what we all know Epcot as today, the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. Epcot is made up of what originally could have been two separate theme parks, as described by Disney legend, the late Marty Sklar (long time Disney Executive and Creative). The two (2) parts of Epcot are Future World and World Showcase. Future World houses such well-known attractions as Test Track, Soarin and Living with The Land. World Showcase is made of 11 countries, including delicious restaurants, shopping, and scenic views.

1967 – A little boy leaned on his elbows in front of a black-and-white TV in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, unaware that Walt Disney was dead. How could he be dead? I was watching him on TV. Looking right into my eyes, Walt told me about his purchase of 43 square miles of Central Florida, an area twice the size of the island of Manhattan, and his plan to build there an Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT.) He was standing in a Hollywood film studio in front of a floor-to-ceiling map of his Florida project when he said, “Welcome to a little bit of Florida here in California. This is where the early planning is taking place for our so-called Disney World Project. Now, the purpose of this film is to bring you up to date about some of the plans for Disney World.” A little later, he said, “The sketches and plans you will see today are simply a starting point, our first overall thinking about Disney World. Everything in this room may change time and time again as we move ahead, but the basic philosophy of what we're planning for Disney World is going to remain very much as it is right now…” That was the part I never forgot: Walt Disney knew his plan would evolve into something different than he imagined.Eighteen years ago Princess Pennie decided to buy some land and build a non-profit school for entrepreneurs, storytellers, and educators. We knew it would have a classroom tower with a library mezzanine and on-campus housing so that students wouldn't have to sleep in hotel rooms. Everything else was an afterthought. Chapel Dulcinea was chosen by 1,111 brides in 2017, making it the most popular wedding chapel on earth. A free wedding chapel wasn't part of the original plan, but if you've ever walked the campus at Wizard Academy, it's hard to imagine it not being there. A certification course for the training of whiskey sommeliers (storytellers) wasn't part of the original plan, either. Nor was The Crowded Barrel whiskey distillery.* And we could never have dreamed that Wizard Academy's YouTube channel, The Whiskey Vault, would become the #1 whiskey-review channel on earth. We couldn't have imagined it because streaming, online video did not exist in the year 2000. And now the Rocinante gym. A couple of years ago, Brian Clapp donated state-of-the art gym equipment but it never got used because it was housed in a part of the campus where students never go. The solution? Build a sleek, cantilevered gym covered in glittering silver metal with an 18-foot glass wall looking at Chapel Dulcinea, and put it next to the sidewalk between Spence Manor and Engelbrecht House. And of course we'll be starting The House of the Lost Boys – your third student mansion – as soon as the gym is complete, probably in about 60 days. But that's not the big news. No, not by a long shot.In late spring, 2019, the American Small Business Institute will be launching an important new certification course, The Ad Writer's Masters Class, a one-year online course – 26 modules, followed by 26 essay assignments – followed by a three-day, face-to-face working examination by a board of Master Ad Writers. This is a really big deal. And very expensive. (12k, minus alumni discount) When you finally pass your board exams – and you can try as often as you want – you will be certified and admitted into The Ad Writers Guild, with appropriate pomp and fanfare and physical glitteralia. Because after all, the American Small Business Institute is an extension of that wonderful dreamscape called Wizard Academy. Indy says you should visit him in the rabbit hole. You know http://www.mondaymorningmemo.com/rabbithole/ (how to get in,) right? Roy H. Show #3 - Marty Sklar Interview

Disney Avenue Podcast

The Disney Avenue Podcast is back with a guest I think you may have heard of...Marty Sklar! Dusty Sage, founder and CEO of MiceChat.com, joins host Keith Michael Mahne for another fantastic interview with a man that needs no introduction. Marty talks about joining the company, working and writing for Walt Disney, his old pals John Hench and Herb Ryman, finding out Walt had passed away, whether he will attend the opening of Shanghai Disney and so much more. This is a show you definitely won't want to miss. As former vice chairman and principal creative executive of Walt Disney Imagineering, Marty Sklar stood as a dedicated torchbearer of Walt Disney’s philosophy since first joining the company a month before Disneyland opened in 1955. He helped express and preserve Walt’s spirit of optimism, happiness, and hope for the future through attractions and special exhibitions in Disney theme parks around the world. For more than 50 years, Walt’s inspiration has burned in Marty. He once said, “Working with Walt Disney was the greatest ‘training by fire’ anyone could ever experience. Our training was by Walt, who was always there pitching in with new ideas and improving everyone else’s input. The fire was that we were constantly breaking new ground to create deadline projects never attempted before in this business. That, I’m proud to say, has never stopped in my years at Disney.” During his early years at Disney, Marty not only learned Walt’s philosophy firsthand, but metabolized and translated it into materials he wrote for the master showman which were used in publications, television appearances, and special films. Among them was a 20-minute movie devoted to communicating Walt’s vision of EPCOT, his Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, originally intended to help resolve the urban challenges found in American cities. Marty first became an Imagineering officer in 1974 when appointed vice president, concepts and planning, a role in which he guided creative development of Epcot Center at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. In 1979, he was named vice president of creative development, followed by executive vice president in 1982. He served as president and vice chairman from 1987 to 1996. As vice chairman, Marty provided leadership for the Imagineering creative staff, delivering breakthrough entertainment concepts for Disney parks and resorts including Disneyland Paris, the Tokyo Disney Resort, and Hong Kong Disneyland. In 2001, Marty was recognized as a Disney Legend. He retired from Disney on July 17, 2009, after 53 years with the company. He currently serves as president of Ryman Arts, whose Ryman Program for Young Artists honors the late Herb Ryman. More information on the Ryman Arts can be found at here.
