Courage. Why don't we design what we know? Circle 00008 (r=4)
Circle 00008 (r=4): Courage. Why don’t we design what we know? Designers are, in principle, part of a “courageous” profession: they are constantly searching for alternatives, bringing about new things through their creativity and treading unfamiliar paths. We have long known that the sustainable development of our society is only possible through a course change in our lifestyle habits and designed offerings. Particularly in a discipline such as classic product design, where the customer is the industry, it is difficult even in times of economic difficulty and high competition to transform oneself from a pure service provider into an emancipated, courageous partner to the customer and propose sustainable solutions. So what does courage mean in the context of Design for Sustainability? What is needed besides courage in order to close the gap between knowledge and action? Courage comes from empowerment, and empowerment comes from knowledge. When we apply the knowledge of the opportunities and possibilities of sustainable design, new contexts and fields of activity emerge. Whoever can show enthusiastically that things can be different can change something. Guests: - Daniela Bohlinger, designer, Team BMWi, Munich, University of Design Schwäbisch Gmünd - Hans Holzinger, sustainablility researcher, Robert-Jungk-Futures Library, Salzburg - Dr. Ira Mollay, founder, Die Mutmacherei/inspire4change, Vienna - Moderated by Harald Gründl, design theorist and director of the IDRV; designer (EOOS), Vienna.
Teaching Design in Times of Sustainability. Circle 00006 (r=7)
Harald Gründl, design theorist and director of the IDRV; Designer (EOOS), Vienna. The Status Quo in Education. If sustainable design is to establish itself, then knowledge must be an integral part of all design education. The university education landscape is in flux, new design concepts and corresponding offerings are being established, from Critical Design through Social Design to branded programs such as Design scionic®. Environmentally and socially sustainable development is arguably THE key agenda of the future. Especially in the “protected” areas of teaching and science, free thinking, should be independent of economic constraints, enabling the transmission of the values that can represent a sustainable society. How do we train a new generation of designers so that they can design alternative options for the best possible future? This discussion is intended, on the one hand, to illustrate the interdisciplinary nature and bandwidth of “Design for Sustainability”, and on the other hand, to sketch out how design education for a sustainable world might look.
Harald Gruendl: Chairman of IDRV and designer (EOOS), moderator of the 4th circle.
IDRV is researching on existing tools and strategies, which aim for ecologically and socially sustainable design solutions. Our ambition is to bring some clearness and tangibility to the current jungle of theory models and calculation tools in relation to carbon efficient product development, so that the point of origin for future design processes will be a sustainable one.
