Our Story It was before ISTE17 when Erin encouraged Joelle and I to submit proposals to present. We were all coworkers at the time, working at a Catholic school, with a shared desire to continue our own learning. It was super exciting when we each received the alert that our individual poster session proposals were accepted. We worked together to pack supplies, make copies, set up, tear down, take pictures, tweet out with the #ISTE17 - all of it! We were an awesome support to one another and that was the beginning of our beautiful relationship. At ISTE17, we met some of the fantastic leaders of NCEA (National Catholic Educational Association) and they asked if we’d be interested in leading a series of webinars together. This successful collaboration led us to working together to present at district and state conferences in Nevada. It was at CUENV last October where Dr. Randall Sampson had a conversation with Joelle and complemented our trio and how well we work together. We had that feeling, but to know that it was seen from an outsiders’ perspective was huge! He told Joelle that we had something special and to keep it going. On the drive home from CUENV, we were all on Voxer and asked, “What if we started a podcast…?” And we were pretty much all in! Then the planning came along - coming up with a unique concept, and a name, our love of PD but bite sized pieces of it, finding the balance between work and home - we had a lot to figure out, but we were creating something that we are proud to be a part of today.
Last week, one of the premier edtech events in the world took place in San Antonio, and it was our good fortune (Bruce, Missy, and I) to all be in attendance at the ISTE 2017 conference with about 16,000 others. In this podcast, Bruce and I reflect on the love/hate relationship we both have with the conference, and on ISTE's historical context as we reach a half a century of living with the idea of computers for learning with kids. We also entertain our very first SpeakPipe comment and question, one from Cheryl Doig in New Zealand who made us think about the humanity of technology and ISTE and edtech in general. We invite you to add your questions or comments below, and we'll weave them into our discussion next week. Greeting from San Antonio, where Bruce, Missy, and I are gathering for our second Change School retreat, our first Change School Social, and, of course, the mammoth #ISTE17 conference where something like 17K educators from around the world are getting the latest about technology and how to (or how not to) use it in the classroom. Full disclosure, ISTE is always a bit of a love hate for Bruce and I, and you'll get that sense in this episode. The conference is always heavy on tech but, in our minds, light on real learning. Rare are the discussions truly about creating agency for the learner and letting them do amazing things that change the world. (Hence the Papert quote below.) We hope you enjoy Episode #17 from ISTE17.
