Math vs. Mathematics: Using Desmos to Honor Student Thinking and Value Student Input Date: October 4, 2022 Seymore Papert viewed mathematics as one of the great jewels of achievement of the human mind instead of what he called math - the boring stuff kids do in schools with putting in numbers. Technology can help create meaningful learning experiences that honor student thinking and value student input, similar to Papert's vision for mathematics. In contrast, it technology can also be used to have students do math by just putting in numbers. This presentation will show how Desmos can support teachers in implementing meaningful learning experiences. Good projects aren't that tough to create. But somehow we always seem to overcomplicate them. (Me included) What if I told you that the best project prompts could fit on a single post-it note? Project-Based experiences that have students staying in during lunch, working late hours in the evening, mastering curricular standards, and producing awe inspiring work that makes adult jaws drop. These are the kind of project-based experiences Gary Stager has educators around the world designing through his Summer Institutes and brilliant book 'Invent to Learn' on a regular basis. I sat down with Gary to discuss the book and how we as learning experience designers can: Design curricular rich project prompts that fit on a single post-it note Create learning environments that resemble more cocktail party than they do classroom Design projects that are 'sharable,' and live on well beyond their expiration date Release the shackles of subjects, specialists, timetables, curriculum standards and assessment that often stand in the way of deep and meaningful learning Act more as 'ethnographers' to capture and document student learning, rather than teachers who deliver instruction Get Gary's Book 'Invent to Learn': https://inventtolearn.com/ Learn more about Gary: http://professorgarystager.com Connect with Gary on Twitter: @garystager Get the Free PBL Design Starter Kit: https://transformschool.com/pblstarterkit/ Gary's Bio: In addition to being a popular keynote speaker at some of the world's most prestigious education conferences, Gary Stager is a journalist, teacher educator, consultant, professor, software developer, publisher, and school administrator. What's it like to be a facilities manager running the IT infrastructure of a leading global research university? In this engaging Nomad Futurist podcast, Raymond Parpart, Director of Data Center Operations and Strategy at the University of Chicago shares a journey that led from theater to technology and draws us into the fascinating world of critical infrastructure and supercomputers within a multi-faceted academic environment. Parpart, a theater major, began his career working on the road doing lights and sound and then opted for a different lifestyle. His wife-to-be suggested he apply for an available mailroom position at Aon. As Parpart already had programming experience, he was hired instead as a programmer to work on Y2K compliance. Programming led to networking which led to data centers. “From a technology perspective, I've always managed to latch onto whatever the next thing was...I'm a hungry learner… I want to know!” Parpart then went into consulting. He subsequently joined General Motors where he managed infrastructure and networking. Parpart's work at the University of Chicago involves managing many types of systems ranging from administrative databases to facilities that are responsible for computing for high-end research projects. This requires that he be able to manage different types of facilities depending on the need. “If you want to see the world of cooling or racks or power…we're doing all kinds of crazy things with them. Come see me. I've got all kinds of crazy stuff!” Parpart talks about the pros and cons of working in the world of education versus the corporate environment. “In education the politics are particularly challenging and require patience! I also need to be a partner or a support person and make sure that I'm not seen as an impediment.” He talks about how he applies lessons learned in the world of business. “You never give anybody one option. You give them two because they'll pick one. And hopefully you can sell it so they pick the right one!” Parpart does enjoy the camaraderie of being able to share insights with peers at other big research universities which would be difficult to achieve in the competitive business environment where trade secrets cannot be shared. For newcomers to the space, Papert highlights the importance of being willing to learn, willing to listen, and being transparent about what you know and don't know. For those who are further along in their careers, he particularly stresses the importance of being a good listener. “Are you really listening? Don't be the smartest person in the room, even if you think you are. If you are, take the time to mentor those around you and to draw them into the conversation, to draw them into the solution. Help them think, but let them think!” Raymond Parpart serves as Director of Data Center Operations and Strategy at the University of Chicago where he is responsible for mission critical data center facilities, delivering expertise from system/facility design to operational support, to government compliance for areas such as HIPPA, FISMA, and PCI. Parpart works closely with stakeholders to ensure 7x24 reliability and the constant improvement of system hosting, colocation services, and energy efficiency in complex computing environments. His purview extends to outsourcing and cloud integration strategy. Parpart has over 20 years of global experience with technology. Prior to joining the University in 2007, Parpart was a Global Architect responsible for global infrastructure, data center operations, desktop, and server standards for General Motors where he developed cost saving innovations in the areas of voice, video, and data networking. Earlier in his career, he served in both technical and management roles for a major, regional bank and global consulting company delivering infrastructure design and operations solutions to resolve business...

The next sequel we are reviewing is "Major League: Back to the Minors” in honor of baseball season starting. I had the pleasure of interviewing Cinematographer Charles Papert who worked as a Steadicam operator on "Major League: Back to the Minors" and it was his 1st big studio movie. Once Charles had his mind on a career in film, he was determined and you will hear a story that shows that. Charles was a Steadicam operator on "American History X", "Office Space", and more. Then he went on to be the Cinematographer on "Scrubs", "Key & Peele", "Kenan", and lots more. Great chat that includes my dad's favorite song Foreigner's "Urgent". Check behind the scene photos from Charles at sequelsonly.com/charlespapert Links mentioned in this episode: Charlespapert.com Charle's Zee Gee Grip https://thezeegee.com/ Next up is "Major League: Back to the Minors". LEARN had the privilege of talking with Brian Silverman and Artemis Papert recently, about programming in our Quebec schools. Being the first episode of this school year, I wanted to have a casual conversation about how education is shifting more and more towards computation and programming/coding. Brain and Artemis have been exploring computers in education for the better part of their lives, developing and supporting programming from Logo to Scratch, always with the idea that more programming in schools only makes students lives more relevant. Their beliefs are entrenched in project-based learning with code as just another tool for demonstrating ideas, concepts, learning, and that it is crucial for our learners to develop computation as a necessary skill. Fascinating conversation with many thoughts to ponder and process!
In any discussion of artificial intelligence and machine learning today, artificial neural networks are bound to come up. What are artificial neural networks, how have they developed, and what are they poised to do in the future? Host Angelo Kastroulis dives into the history, compares them to biological systems that they are meant to mimic, and talks about how hard problems like this one need to be handled carefully.Angelo begins with a discussion of how biological neural networks help make our brain a powerful computer of complexity. He then talks about how artificial neural networks recruit the same structures and connections to create artificial intelligence. To understand what we mean by artificial intelligence, Angelo explains how the Turing Test works and how Turing's work forms a foundation for modern AI. He then discusses other early pioneers in this work, namely Frank Rosenblatt, who worked on models that could learn or “perceptrons.” Angelo then relates the history of how this work was criticized by Marvin Minsky and Seymour Papert and how mistakes in their own work put the potential advances of artificial neural networks back by about two decades.Using image recognition as a case study, Angelo ends the episode by talking about about various approaches' benefits and drawbacks to illustrate what we can do with artificial neural networks today.CitationsHebb, D.O. Dr. Bryan Sanders is passionate about rethinking education using a critical techno constructivist lens. Yup, try to say that three times fast! it's a perspective that draws together key thinking by Dewey, Freire and Papert, and it not only led to his doctoral thesis, but also to some of his current energy around the way that we can do school in a different way. Along with Dr. Verena Roberts, Bryan regularly brings together other educators and education thinkers to open up education discourse in this time of pandemic shutdowns.Follow Bryan on Twitter: @nayrbgo
Topics in this epsiode My background as a teacher with EdTech My background as a student (online/distance) Interaction between teachers and vendors EdTech community hype Over-emphasis on EdTech What type of research is done Things that are missing in an online environment Support through the 'grief' process in learning new stuff Teachers are expecting more from kids (especially re instructions) Learning conversations are stilted and unnatural Skills (as a conceptual whole) to thrive online - analogy to a novice apprenticed to a master to gain 'in-group' status The danger of this mass move to online/remote teaching is that ideas are disempowered (Papert). What does this mean for the pathway (i.e., the discourse going forward) - the types of questions/assumptions that are debated and enacted?
Sandwich's commercials and video spots are typically funny, bold, and colorful. Adam Lisagor started the company ten years ago, directing and acting in many of the ads to save money. The first professional DP Adam hired was his college friend, Rachel Morrison. Another frequent cinematographer for Sandwich commercials is Charles Papert, the DP behind Key and Peele.
In early April 2019, Luka Lindič and Ines Papert teamed up with Brette Harrington to climb a major new route in the Canadian Rockies: the complete east face of Mt. Fay. Chris Kalman spoke with them about this wild new line, along with the paradoxical allure of these complex and dangerous mountains. The Cutting Edge is presented by Hilleberg the Tentmaker, with additional support for this episode from Black Diamond Equipment. This podcast is produced by the American Alpine Club.
Seymour Papert's life work was about how humans learnt. We look at his big idea — knowledge construction — and draw on it to learn how to become a better trainer, and therefore a better manager. Andy Ko's summary of Papert's work may be found on Medium here. Papert's book, Mindstorms, is a summary of his life's work and philosophy, built around Knowledge Construction.
If you’ve spent any time around professional DPs and cinematographers, it’s difficult not to come across the name Charles Papert. That’s because he’s been a staple in some of the most popular and best-loved television shows and movies of the past twenty years. As a camera operator, he’s been an integral part of the industry shooting such features […] The post 8. We kick off with reading a love letter to Canadian libraries, discuss the NMC Horizon Report on learning in public schools, the role of technology in social issues, and trip out on Seymour Papert's programming language as well as his ideas about how children construct their learning.
A conversation with cinematographer and former steadicam operator, Charles Papert about his career in the film business.
Greeting from San Antonio, where Bruce, Missy, and I are gathering for our second Change School retreat, our first Change School Social, and, of course, the mammoth #ISTE17 conference where something like 17K educators from around the world are getting the latest about technology and how to (or how not to) use it in the classroom. Full disclosure, ISTE is always a bit of a love hate for Bruce and I, and you'll get that sense in this episode. The conference is always heavy on tech but, in our minds, light on real learning. Rare are the discussions truly about creating agency for the learner and letting them do amazing things that change the world. (Hence the Papert quote below.) We hope you enjoy Episode #17 from ISTE17.
