This week's interview is truly special, because I got the chance to sit down with the one and only Dr. Jacinda Walker. I have been privileged to watch Jacinda's glow up over the years, and now she's reaping the benefits of her hard work, perseverance, and dedication to making the design community better for the next generation.I got to speak with her fresh off her receiving an honorary doctorate from Ringling College of Art, and she talked with me about the experience. She also shared news about the new space for her business, DesignExplorr, and the curriculum and workshop programs that she created based on her graduate research. We even chatted a bit about her work with AIGA's D&I Task Force, what keeps her inspired, and how she measures success now at this stage of her life and career. Jacinda's research and advocacy work deserve our recognition and support, and I'm glad to be able to share her story here!LinksDr. Jacinda Walker's 2014 interviewDesignExplorrDesignExplorr on InstagramDesignExplorr on TwitterFor extended show notes, including a full transcript of this interview, visit revisionpath.com.==========Apply to Join The Tenth CollectiveAre you a Black designer looking for work? Welcome to Works In Process / Ep 22 I always encourage (young people) that you should believe you can do it. That thing that you think is a disadvantage might very well be the best down thing you SHOULD do. You've got to believe it's possible. Because there will be people, there will be forces, there will be places and organizations to tell you otherwise. If you don't, you better start believing quick!”--- That's my guest Jacinda Walker , Jacinda is renowned for her work in design, diversity, research, and strategy. She is the founder and creative director of https://designexplorr.com/ (designExplorr), a social impact organization whose mission addresses the diversity gap within the design profession. Her research on https://designexplorr.com/design-journeys-strategies-for-increasing-diversity-in-design-disciplines/ (Design Journeys: Strategies for Increasing Diversity in Design Disciplines) has been hailed as breakthrough work. This solutions-based thesis explores diversity in design disciplines and investigates effective strategies to expose Black and Latino youth to design careers. Ms. Walker's future goals are to help scale diversity in design initiatives within education institutions, corporations, organizations, and museums. It's for her continued drive and advocation for young people that I have Jacinda on the show. I look to learn how she instills the passion for design at an early and what we should do, as a community, do to foster this change alongside her. Desiree Gibbs is laser-focused on who she wants to be and how she expresses herself. Those skills come in handy not just in her work as a UI designer, but through the projects she oversees and clients she serves as the proprietor of Nü Bläc Studio. We spoke on St. Patrick’s Day, so our conversation actually started off with both of us discussing how to navigate this new social distancing reality due to the COVID-19 public health crisis. Desiree also talked about growing up between Japan and the United States, attending the University of Texas at Arlington for design, and even how former guests Gus Granger and Jacinda Walker helped show her the importance of seeing more Black designers in this industry. Desiree says she wants to ultimately become the most solidified version of herself, and with her skills and drive, she’s well on her way to making that happen!LinksDesiree Gibbs on InstagramDesiree Gibbs on TwitterNü Bläc StudioDesiree Gibbs on Etsy: DeziUnique RECOGNIZE is a design anthology featuring essays and commentary from indigenous people and people of color — the next generation of emerging design voices.
