Help keep our podcast going by contributing to our Patreon! In our last episode we talked about the opulence of Goth–Gothic architecture, fashion, and art of all kinds–and the connection between this and the opulence of the Visigoths and their vast state treasure plundered from Roman cities and towns. But there's more to Goth than plunder. There's a romance to Goth. A dark romance steeped in obsession. Many of the original Gothic romances involve tragic deaths. And what else do we know of that combines sex and death? That's right: vampires. And it's in ancient vampire mythology where we'll attempt to uncover a nefarious connection to the Ostrogoths.  Sponsors and Advertising This podcast is a member of Airwave Media podcast network. Tread Perilously rounds out the summer Patreon request month with an episode of NYPD Blue called "Oh Golly Goth." With Sorenson on desk duty, the others -- including visiting detective Connie McDowell -- work on a stabbing at an upscale hotel. With the victim claiming to only recall the attacker being white with dark hair, the case seems to point to a naked man found in the hotel room. But when it becomes clear he could not have wielded the knife, a new suspect emerges: a young "goth" known as Dio. Meanwhile, Sipowicz takes a vacation day to clear Sorenson's name ... never mind that the junior detective brutalized a suspect. Erik and Justin are surprised to discover what the influential series really looked like half-way through its run. Jimmy Smits can't get a break even though he was long gone by this point. Denis Franz easily proves to be the MVP, although plenty of time is given to Charlotte Ross as she begins her NYPD Blue tour of duty. Creators David Milch and Steven Bochco are examined. Talk about The Shield also occurs. Justin marvels at the way the show lost its cultural footprint. David Caruso also gets a mention and the use of the term "goth" comes into question.

Blackpool, Lancashire lies on the Irish Sea on the northwest coast of England, situated roughly 50-some miles north of Liverpool and 50-some miles west of Manchester. This seaside destination may conjure up visions of tourists, the Promenade, Pleasure Beach, or Blackpool Tower, but this week we focus on Blackpool as a crucial stop on the musical map. Joining us for this engaging discussion is one of Blackpool's favourite musical sons, John Robb! John was outside enjoying a lovely sunny day in Manchester, and we were lucky to get nearly an hour of his time before his phone connection went kaput. John has been at the centre of Blackpool post-punk legends the Membranes from their original 1977-1990 run to their post-hiatus return since 2009. Their initial era (including their three UK Top 20 indie albums and three Top 20 indie singles) is covered on Cherry Red's comprehensive 5 CD box set, Everyone's Going Triple Bad Acid, Yeah! They added to their already impressive body of work in the 21st century with two of their finest and most ambitious albums yet: 2015's Dark Matter/Dark Energy and 2019's What Nature Gives...Nature Takes Away. But wait, there's far more to this multi-faceted artist. Aside from also leading the punk band Goldblade, Robb has also produced bands like Therapy? and Cornershop; been a TV presenter and pundit; a journalist; best-selling author (including The Art of Darkness - The History of Goth, Punk Rock: An Oral History, Stone Roses and the Resurrection of British Pop, The North Will Rise Again, and an upcoming Oasis biography); creator of the essential Louder Than War website and magazine; festival boss; green revolutionary; vegan behemoth...a true renaissance man. Your favorite bully, loner, and nerd gather to eat a well-balanced lunch of sushi, sandwiches, chocolate chip cookies, Cap'n Crunch sandwiches, chips, and apple juice before discussing The Breakfast Club. This is a film that every high school kid should watch. We could do without the running in the halls and the unwarranted makeover of the Goth girl. Our “old age” has taught us to walk gently and not to change to please others. Maybe we are destined to be our parents like the kids in detention. Hopefully, we've received and can pass on only the best parts.

S5E20 Volsung Poems: Two Poems of Atli (Part 5)David continues his series of not so short solo episodes, deep diving into the Poems of the Poetic Edda which inspired the Saga of the Volsungs. In this episode:The Lay of AtliThe Greenlandic Lay of AtliThese poems connect the legends of Atli the Hun, to his wife Gudrun and the poems of Sigurd and his decent from the Norse Gods. Atli kills Gudrun's brothers. Some would say to avenge Sigurd and Brunhilde. Others would say to obtain Fafnir's Hoard of Gold. Either way, it is the curse of Andvari's gold, leading to the deaths of generations of fathers and sons.We see in these poems the author favors the Giukung family, Gudrun, Hogni and Gunnar. Where previous poems placed them as the betrayers of Sigurd, Sigurd has been mostly forgotten here. Gudrun does grieve the loss of her great love, but she also hangs on to the love of her brothers and the bonds of kinship. The Giukung family are Goths, a Germanic Tribe. Sigurd joined their clan. But he betrayed the love of Brunhilde, of the family of Atli and the Huns. Gunnar is too smart to allow the hoard of Fafnir to fall into the hands of the Huns. It is returned to the bottom of the Rhine River. But the curse lives through Gudrun and she sees to the death of her two sons by Atli. In the next and final short, she will be remarried to a third king, and see to the deaths of two more sons. The Greenlandic Lay of Atli seems to be a fan fiction. Another take on the same story. The Greenlanders wished to see Gunnar and Hogni as Greenlanders, falling into the same trap of Atli. Blindly trusting fate and the bonds of kindship.Ways to support us:If you have been enjoying our show, please write a 5 star review on itunes to help spread our podcast to a wider audience:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/between-two-ravens-a-norse-mythology-podcast/id1604263830Buy Shawn and David a Beer or Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/tworavenpodcastFollow us for updates or send us a message on Instagram:Instagram: (@TwoRavensPodcast): https://www.instagram.com/tworavenspodcast/Check out David's writing: Walled Garden (https://thewalledgarden.com/davidalexander)Our podcast is part of The Walled Garden Podcast Network. Help keep our podcast going by contributing to our Patreon! Long after the smoke from the battlefields died down, long after the ravens had eaten their fill, the Migration Era lived on in Germanic heroic legend, well into the Middle Ages. For centuries after the battles and events of that era, people throughout Europe were crafting legends and sagas that repurposed and mythologized those events, sometimes recasting major figures from that time into villains and heroes of a later saga. Goths and Huns figured prominently.  And that is our subject today: who got mythologized, and how. Sponsors and Advertising This episode is sponsored by Taskrabbit. Eleanor Friedberger, best known as one half of the indie rock duo The Fiery Furnaces, has recently shifted her musical landscape, swapping out live instruments in favor of drum programming and synths for a sound that she can create mostly on her own. (Part of her desire to be more self-reliant, in the wake of the 2016 election.) On her 2018 record, Rebound, she channels the sound and energy of an experience at a very smoky 80's goth disco in Athens where they do a “chicken dance.” Lyrical inspiration came to Friedberger from a biography about the poet Edna St Vincent Millay. Eleanor Friedberger brings these dark and smoky, yet groovy and poetic tunes to perform in-studio. (From the Archives)

We take a deep dive into Goon, the hockey classic starring Sean William Scott, famously know for being Stifler from American Pie - but this time as a very different character. Jay Baruchel, who wrote the script, co-stars along with Liev Schreiber, Allison Pill, Eugene Levy and an unbelievable cast in this hilarious and underrated film. You don't need to be a hockey fan to enjoy this movie loosely based on the true story of eventual NHL enforcer Doug Smith. Goon takes you on Doug Glatt's rise through the minors where you get to meet his lunatic teammates and coaches. I can 100% guarantee laughs in this one & will probably crack on a few of the lines - especially the old play-by-play announcer's outrage at the Canadian anthem being butchered by a Goth girl who thinks she nailed it. (“Well, that was borderline treasonous, and a disgrace yo our nation and its proud & storied history.) And that's about as clean as it gets. Join us.

It took little more than a single generation for the centuries-old Roman Empire to fall. In those critical decades, while Christians and pagans, legions and barbarians, generals and politicians squabbled over dwindling scraps of power, two men – former comrades on the battlefield – rose to prominence on opposite sides of the great game of empire. Roman general Flavius Stilicho, the man behind the Roman throne, dedicated himself to restoring imperial glory, only to find himself struggling for his life against political foes. Alaric, King of the Goths, desired to be a friend of Rome, was betrayed by it, and given no choice but to become its enemy. Battling each other to a standstill, these two warriors ultimately overcame their differences in order to save the empire from enemies on all sides. And when Stilicho fell, Alaric took vengeance on Rome, sacking it in 410, triggering the ultimate downfall of the Western Empire. To discuss this critical decade in Western history is Don Hollway, author of “At the Gates of Rome: The Fall of the Eternal City, AD 410.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
