Stories of the undead tormenting the living supposedly entered the English-speaking world in 1732, with a report from the Hapsburg military of events in Serbia—events that would go on to inspire the most famous vampire of all, Dracula. But the count from Transylvania was neither the first undead man in England (British corpses went walking in 680, and again in 1090) nor the most emblematic of the folk tales that preceded him (that would be Carmilla, who embodies a type seen from China to the Eastern Roman Empire). In Killing the Dead: Vampire Epidemics from Mesopotamia to the New World, John Blair uses examples from the far-flung ancient world—a “vampire belt” stretching from Scandinavia and the North Sea through central and eastern Europe, western Russia, the Near East, India, and China to Indonesia—to make the case that “corpse-killing is mainstream and not marginal, therapeutic and not pathological.” The undead have seemingly always been with us, as has our need to kill them to exorcise our own anxieties. “Killing the dead is better than killing the living,” Blair writes. “Like other extreme rituals, it is depressing at the time but leaves people feeling good afterwards.”Go beyond the episode:John Blair's Killing the Dead: Vampire Epidemics from Mesopotamia to the New WorldListen to our interview about the modern vampire with Nick Groom, the Prof of Goth, and our conversation with Ronald Hutton about witch persecutions through the agesYou know we love horror—visit our episode page for a list of spookiest episodesTune in every (other) week to catch interviews with the liveliest voices from literature, the arts, sciences, history, and public affairs; reports on cutting-edge works in progress; long-form narratives; and compelling excerpts from new books. Phaeton (October 24th) of our third album "Neurogenesis,"Guest appearance from former Dream Theater keyboardist Derek Sherinian (on the single "Isochron"). Phaeton formed in 2017 in the Rocky Mountain resort town of Kimberley, British Columbia. Our drummer Colin had worked with Kevin and Dan and I in separate earlier metal bands and he gathered us all together to create something exciting and unique. Which ended up being all-instrumental progressive metal, akin to Animals As Leaders or Scale The Summit or Intervals, although we draw further influence from artists such as Rush, Mastodon, Gojira, Between the Buried and Me, Devin Townsend, and Dream Theater. We're somewhat insular and work in-house, with Kevin being our recording engineer and producer - our recorded output features crystalline sharpness, but we're a much heavier live act in person. We're currently promoting the imminent release (October 24th) of our third album "Neurogenesis," which features a guest appearance from former Dream Theater keyboardist Derek Sherinian (on the single "Isochron"). Phaeton have shared the stage with such metal notables as Anciients, Bison, and Beyond Creation, and we make friends wherever we go. Phaeton are looking forward to further touring both across Canada and internationally. Click Here to Subscribe to Pipeman in the Pit for PERKS, BONUS Content & FREE GIVEWAYS! Mia Goth is the latest actor shedding a bit of light on the long-shelved Blade movie from Marvel Studios. In an interview with Elle, promoting her upcoming appearance in Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, Goth shared only that she is still attached to the film and commented that “It's for the best that it's taken the time it has. They want to do it right.” This is in line with Kevin Feige's comments this summer that the film is still moving forward. In an interview with the AP this week, Adam Driver dropped some major information about the Ben Solo movie in Star Wars that never was. Driver explained that Lucasfilm was interested in continuing his character's story in a film that had a script written by Steven Soderbergh. The movie's plot will focus on Midthunder's character, trained as a child who must save her father after he is kidnapped.Lightning RoundKate McKinnon has joined the cast of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” Season 3 and will play Aphrodite.Jim Carrey is in talks to star in a live action film adaptation of The Jetsons from Warner Bros. Returning guest, singer/songwriter Oscar Herrera (The Sleep of Reason, Black Tape for a Blue Girl), brings us Bauhaus and their 1980 debut full-length: 'In The Flat Field'. Often cited as a foundational release in the Goth-rock genre, there's no denying this darkly theatrical, often ferocious collection of songs STILL packs an unsettling punch. Happy pre-Halloween! Songs discussed in this episode: Dark Entries (Bauhaus cover) - Revolting Cocks (Feat. Gibby Haynes); I Have A Task - Oscar Herrera; God Of Thunder - Kiss; Isolation - Joy Division; Jigsaw Feeling - Siouxsie and The Banshees; His Box - Dalis Car; Castor and Pollux, To The Sea, Validation - Oscar Herrera; Double Dare, Antonin Artaud, In The Flat Field, God In An Alcove, Dive, The Spy In The Cab, Small Talk Stinks, St Vitus Dance, Who Killed Mr Moonlight, Stigmata Martyr, Nerves, Bela Lugosi's Dead, Telegram Sam (T-Rex cover), Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie cover) - Bauhaus; The Black Harvest (Live) - The Sleep Of Reason; Rose Garden Funeral of Sores (John Cale cover, live) - Bauhaus; Vienna (Ultravox cover) - Oscar Herrera

On this week's show, we spend quality time with new records from Wednesday and Amanda Shires, spin fresh tracks from Parlor Greens, Tune-Yards and The Mountain Goats, and give it up for season two of HBO Max's Peacemaker. All this and much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is a podcast that thinks it's a radio show...because it used to be one. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004. It phoenixed into a podcast in 2020, thanks to the fine and fabulously furious folks at NRM Streamcast.

Think Frankists Are Irrelevant? That's who gave you Scofield, Darby, Dispensationalism, and Zionism. The Lurian Kabbalah is the Impetus behind the world plan of destruction, and the genocide of the European. We are witness to a FRAUD carried out in their Artificial world under their artificial terms and enslaved by their artificial concept of wealth and power. The root of the word God comes from Got(h). We're not looking for a heavenly being to come rescue mankind. We're looking for the spirit of emapthy, compassion, bravery, justice, and defiance to rise within ourselves. God works through us, not on our behalf. This is not work for the weak or cowardly. The Goth are the "Chosen," and it is a heavy burden to be tasked with defeating EVIL.Get Dr Monzo's Whole Food Supplements for your 90 Essential Revitalizing Nutrients here:https://SemperFryLLC.comClick His Picture on the Right for the AZURE WELL products and use code BB5 for your discount.Pods & Exclusives AD-FREE!https://patreon.com/c/DisguisetheLimitsDon't be a schmoe, Support the Show!https://GiveSendGo.com/BaalBustersConsistent shows, Consistent effort.Want Dan's book or his Award winning hot sauces and spicy honey? Haunted by the legacy of his superstar father and by an old family curse, Brandon Lee tried to outrun the past. But the past came after him all the same. It was said that his father, Bruce Lee, was taken by that family curse at just 32 years old, and that it then followed Brandon to the set of The Crow, a cross between a superhero blockbuster and a brooding art film that was all goth. The shoot was plagued by injury, electrocution, storms, fires, and car crashes – and culminated in tragedy when a prop gun fired a real bullet. Nick reunites with film critics Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy to catch up on Steve's trip to Fantastic Fest, talk box office trends, and review new releases including Tron: Ares, The Kiss of the Spider Woman starring Jennifer Lopez, Roofman with Channing Tatum, and a heartfelt new documentary about John Candy. Later, Esmeralda Leon joins Nick to dive into the bizarre world of Billy Corgan's $20 Goth Smoothie, the nostalgia of those old “Scary Sounds” Halloween CDs, and memories of Erehwon mountain stores at the mall. They also swap stories about some of Hollywood's most misguided side projects—from James Caan's Sicilian Vampire to Marlon Brando in drag and Christopher Walken partying with The Country Bears Jamboree. “Enduring night. A spectre of death. He spreads his shadow, and he's coming.” An intertitle from a 1922 film reads: “Nosferatu. Does this word not sound like the deathbird calling your name at midnight? Beware you never say it—for then the pictures of life will fade to shadows, haunting dreams will climb forth from your heart and feed on your blood.” This week, we continue our seventh annual Freaky Film Festival with a gothic horror remake.
