Year three of Singletrack kicks off with a bam. James Varner of Rainshadow Running and Abram Dickerson of Aspire Adventure Running stop by to talk about the upcoming Virtual Trail Running Film Festival. Of course, there's other stuff too, like injury talk, exciting!
Everyone is disappointed that races were cancelled or postponed. What about the race directors themselves - this is how they make a living - what is their perspective? James Varner, Rainshadow Running: "We're known for our post-race parties as much as the running; it's one big happy family. That's all a big no-no right now with social distancing." Justin Ricks, Mad Moose Events: "When you lose something, you realize what you're missing. When people come back, there will be a lot of positive energy." Justin is a resident of Moab, Utah, and offers a behind-the-scenes look at the local closure of this iconic recreation destination: "150-200 business leaders in Moab attended the Grand Council meeting in regard to my events. It’s been an interesting time!" Support your local Race Directors!
James Varner grew up near the Appalachian mountains on the East Coast. His love of mountains eventually brought him out to the West Coast where he started Rainshadow Running - A series of over 12 ultra running races in Washington and Oregon. His races are hard, scenic, fun, and sell out very fast! James has been running ultras for over 18 years and is a 5 time (maybe more) Hardrock finisher. In this podcast he talks about life growing up on the east coast, hiking the Appalachian trail, what made him move to the West Coast and the exciting way he got there. How he got into ultra marathon running and starting Rainshadow Running. We also talk about what's up next for James and what's exciting him these days!
