Few bands have been as consistently successful in Canada—or as underrated outside of it—as April Wine. From early classics like "Fast Train" to arena rock staples including "Roller," "I Like to Rock," "Just Between You and Me," and "Sign of the Gypsy Queen," the band built a remarkable catalog spanning more than three decades.Author Tim Durling joins me to discuss his new book, On Record: The April Wine Album Review, an album-by-album journey through all 16 studio albums. We explore the band's fascinating origins, the misread letter that changed their future, Myles Goodwyn's songwriting brilliance, their breakthrough in the U.S., the albums every fan should hear, and why April Wine remains one of classic rock's most overlooked bands.Whether you're a lifelong fan or discovering April Wine for the first time, this is the ultimate guide to one of Canada's greatest rock bands.

It's hot! Damn hot. Not just here in the deep south of the USA, but all over the world. Here in the south, we also add a layer of humidity to our heat dome for you to chew on. The Meanies are absolute legends of Australian punk rock, and they are tearing through 2026 like a runaway train. Formed in Melbourne back in 1988, these sonic maniacs have spent nearly four decades delivering chaotic, high-energy pop-punk packed with hooks and bruises. Fronted by the indestructible Link Meanie, they are a band that leaves everything on the stage - literally - known for chaotic live sets that frequently end with broken gear or broken bones. After surviving decades of rock 'n' roll storms, they are still one of the most vital, loud, and uncompromising underground bands in the country. If you think these veteran punks are slowing down, you are dead wrong. The rest of 2026 is completely packed with heavy riffs, interstate chaos, and killer new wax. The band is currently crisscrossing the country on a huge national run. They are teaming up with their longtime brothers-in-arms, Spiderbait, acting as the main support on the massive Ivy & The Big Apples anniversary tour. This means they are bringing their blistering noise to huge venues like Adelaide's Hindley Street Music Hall on 25 July and Canberra's legendary venue The Baso on 30 July.Right after the arena-sized rock shows, The Meanies are jumping straight back into the sweaty club trenches. They have joined forces with Queensland punk unit Dad Fight for a brutal split 7-inch vinyl release featuring fresh tracks from both bands. Dubbed "the old bull and the young calf, together at last," they are launching the wax with a lethal East Coast tour. HEAVY caught up with Link Meanie to find out more, asking how the body is holding up these days."Oh, pretty shit," he laughed. "Yeah, I was just rueing selling the comfy chair that I had here, and now I'm just sitting on a drum stool. My back's fucking killing me! I've done so much damage over the years that I knew it would come back and bite me at some stage."We follow up by asking Link if he finds the need to do more stretches and warm-ups now before hitting the stage."The only time I was ever fit in my life was probably the turn of the millennium when I was doing Kung Fu, and I was actually quite fit then," he smiled. "God, I'm a couch potato now (laughs)."In the full interview, we chat more about life on the road and the perils of ageing. We discussed still touring with Spiderbait and Link's memories of the very first time they played together, as well as a list of upcoming shows this year. The run of shows with Dad Fight was discussed, including the nurturing role The Meanies play when hitting the road with the next generation of bands. We talked about the 7" split single release between The Meanies and Dad Fight and where to get it, as well as the possibility of a new album in the near future and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

ou've built the fitness. Now what? This week we're digging into training specificity: how to shape your training around the actual demands of your goal race, whether that's a road marathon, a 50K, or a 100-miler like Leadville or Hardrock. Specificity is the sexy stuff athletes love to obsess over, but it's also where we see the most expensive mistakes. We break down what race-specific training actually means, when it belongs in your training calendar, and the traps that cost athletes their races. What we cover:Specificity is earned. Why general fitness is the raw material and specificity is just the sculpting, and why "couch to 50K" plans set athletes up to failThe training funnel. Wide and general in base season, narrow and race-specific 8 to 12 weeks out, with fine-tuning inside the final two to three weeksDuration and time on feet. Why training for the hours you'll be out there matters more than the miles on the race page (100 miles can mean 14 hours or 30)Vert, terrain, and eccentric loading. Why per-mile elevation ratio beats a weekly vert number, how to read a course profile (three 1,000-foot climbs is not one 3,000-foot climb), and training downhill resilience with the repeat bout effectFueling and gut training. The most underrated specificity of all: why you need to practice your race-day fueling for a minimum of 12 weeksThe number one trap: sacrificing fitness on the altar of specificity, from course-obsessed weekend commutes to heat suits on the treadmill in JanuaryPlus:Listener question: "I missed my long run, so I added the miles to next week and dug myself into a hole." Why makeup miles don't exist, why the body knows stress rather than miles, and how to actually rearrange a training week when life blows up your scheduleHot or Not: running belts, handhelds, gas station candy as ultra fuel, and strength training during the taperWe're off for a two-week summer break and back in August.Questions for a future episode? We spread our toes wider than nature intended before this great episode! A main topic was on the fueling evolution in the Tour de France, and how that has predicted everything that has happened across endurance sports. We also break down what fueling looked like in the 1990s from an old study! High carb is changing everything, and cycling is always the first mover on the next breakthrough. We also did an update on uphill treadmill threshold workouts. More than any training intervention we have ever seen, these workouts seem to be correlating with better performance for road runners, where every 1% counts. And this one was full of fun topics! Other topics: David's embarrassing online order, the wild and mostly unchecked world of shoe prototypes, the Hardrock 100 (featuring 50-year old Ludovic Pommeret setting another course record!), AI cheating in college and what that means for creative work, a “supplement” at the World Cup, when to move to the 100-mile distance, peeing thoughts, our uncertain take on Nomio in ultras, our heat video in the hot tub, and a big discussion of how we think about learning in coaching.Come for the vibes. Stay for David realizing mid-hot-take that he is a hypocrite and should stop talking about shoes. We love you all! Ninety-four 100-mile races finished. 14 DNFs. A bartending shift that turned into a Red Bull sponsorship. Karl Meltzer, known as the "Speedgoat," sits down with Joe De Sena to talk about what it actually takes to keep showing up to the start line at 58 years old. They break down his mental strategy for surviving the darkest hours of a hundred-miler, the races he dropped out of, why 11 of his 14 DNFs were mental, and what that taught him about headspace. Karl walks through the three non-negotiables he gives anyone who wants to stay in the game: get outside every day, build a routine you protect, and keep moving even when the first ten minutes fight you. Things You Will Learn: A single-word mental reset that keeps you moving when everything in your body says quit. Why most DNFs are mental, not physical and what that means for your own breaking points. The three daily non-negotiables that sustain performance across decades, not just seasons. Tools & Frameworks Covered: The Blink Reset: When suffering peaks, compress your timeline. Tomorrow at this time, you will be done. That reframe keeps your legs moving now. Headspace Audit: If your mind is checked out before the start line, the race is already lost. Identify whether the resistance is physical or mental before you act on it. Three-Point Daily Standard: Get outside. Protect your routine. Start moving even when the first ten minutes resist you. Consistency across years beats intensity across weeks. Over a 25-year career, he has built a reputation for treating extreme suffering as a mechanical problem to be solved rather than a reason to quit. From failing twice before conquering the Appalachian Trail FKT to redefining what elite endurance looks like in his 50s, Karl represents resilience, longevity, and relentless discipline. He reflects on first dreaming of Hardrock nearly three decades ago, why he spends more than a month living out of his vehicle while preparing in Colorado, and how the race has become as much about exploring the San Juan Mountains as competing on them.Ludo shares why he believes his greatest strength isn't climbing or descending, but having no real weakness, allowing him to maintain a relentless rhythm over 100 miles. He also discusses the importance of adapting to altitude, embracing the unpredictability of the mountains, and returning each year not simply to defend a title, but to chase the elusive "perfect day."Throughout the conversation, Ludo offers a thoughtful perspective on longevity, family, community, and why Hardrock remains one of the most unique experiences in trail running. It's a conversation with one of the sport's true masters about finding joy in the process long after the trophies have been won. Thanks for tuning in to Hardrock Uncovered. Following ACL surgery and a patient two-year recovery, he's finally healthy and able to devote his entire season to preparing for Hardrock.Arlen shares why spending nearly a month living and training in the San Juan Mountains has been just as much about exploration as preparation, how mountain experience outweighs chasing numbers on a training log, and why learning to manage altitude, weather, gear, and nutrition is every bit as important as fitness. The conversation also uncovers his excitement for racing the clockwise direction, his love for Hardrock's unique community, his family-centered crew, and, of course, the legendary brisket waiting at Animas Forks. It's a conversation about resilience, patience, and arriving at Hardrock healthy, grateful, and ready to see what the mountains have to offer.Stay tuned as Hardrock Uncovered continues with more athlete conversations leading up to race

That unforgettable moment planted the seed for what would become a nearly decade-long dream. Now, after years of qualifying, learning the course, and working alongside coach James Bonnet, Meghan arrives in Silverton focused not on finish times, but on soaking in every mile of one of the world's most iconic mountain races. We also talk about training for Hardrock from the Arizona desert, why embracing "Hardwalk" became part of her preparation, the advantages of being both a physical therapist and an ultrarunner, and the incredible support system of family, friends, pacers, and mentors that has helped make this dream a reality. It's a conversation about gratitude, preparation, and finally standing on the start line of a race that has inspired her for nearly ten years.Stay tuned as Hardrock Uncovered continues with more athlete conversations leading up to race weekend.

"Why do you keep going to the well hoping that you're going to find MCR-flavored water there? There's nothing there, man. MCR is not going to create anything they don't have to." Brian and Lizzie tackle the chaotic realities of the summer touring season. The conversation kicks off with a roasting of the intense heat waves plaguing European festivals, which quickly segues into a deep dive on the viral Pinkpop Festival drama. The hosts dissect the hilarious clash between fans of pop princess Zara Larsson and the heavy-hitting German metalcore outfit Electric Callboy and the bizarrely foul hygiene habits of some modern festival-goers. Switching gears from live show chaos to recorded music, the duo breaks down the internet's collective, desperate hope for a fifth My Chemical Romance album. Evaluating the band's recent move to reopen their classic forums, Lizzie shares the community's frustration with cash-grabs, while Brian drops a harsh truth bomb: with four legendary albums already carrying their legacy, MCR has absolutely no obligation to release new music. To wrap up the episode, the hosts take a nostalgic trip down memory lane to critique the legacy of Pop Goes Punk style tracks, weighing whether modern TikTok covers hold a candle to the scene-defining execution of classic alternative covers. Tom Evans is one of the best ultrarunners in the world, having won both UTMB and Western States. Now, the British runner has his sights set on the Hardrock 100, one of the most technical of the major ultradistance races that starts at 9,300 feet above sea level and covers 33,000 feet of climbing in the rugged San Juan Mountains. Tom talks to Payson about the challenge of preparing for such a remote race at altitude, the team he's assembled, and why he prioritises enjoyment over numbers in the weeks leading up to racing. He also discusses his unlikely route to ultradistance running after a career in the military, and how Red Bull signed him right before his first major result. Plus, we get some insight into his mindset from cognitive specialist Dr David Spindler, who has been working on the ground with Tom in Silverton for the past few weeks.
