Send us a textThe 20th edition of the Arctic Report Card was released on December 16th, 2025 with an impressive compilation of scientific reports on the Arctic. Today's conversation is with editor and long-time contributor, Rick Thoman, who is an award winning climate specialist at IARC's Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Preparedness(ACCAP). Rick has attempted retirement more than once, but his passion for all things Arctic and climate fuel numerous newsletters and also news rooms as he is truly an expert on this topic. His positive impacts are felt amongst Arctic peoples and also for being a wonderful liaison between the scientific community and Arctic policy makers. The Arctic Report Card is an annual report supported by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) with Pan-Arctic perspective and an independent editorial team. The efforts of scientists and climate specialists to create this robust scientific peer reviewed report is in Ricks words, "Herculean"!  The amount of work contributed to this scientific document is extremely important in documenting climate change in the Arctic, which is warming at an alarming rate. Rick discusses highlights that include surface air temperatures and impacts on intensity of storms, including Typhoon Halong, as well as terrestrial snow cover, Greenland Ice Sheet, sea ice, glaciers, marine algae, tundra greenness...all in relatable terminology from complex and hard earned scientific data.  The Report Card is intended for a wide audience, including scientists, teachers, students, decision-makers and the general public interested in the Arctic environment and science. Relationships in HD — Part 13: Parenting with the End in Mind Description: In Part 13 of Relationships in HD, Pastor Eric unpacks what it means to parent—and disciple—with the end in mind. From Titus 2 to Proverbs 22 and Ephesians 6, Scripture shows that biblical parenting isn't merely about raising compliant kids, but about shaping men and women who love Jesus, think biblically, serve faithfully, and stand strong in a culture that pulls them the other way. This message expands the circle beyond biological parenting. Every mature believer—older men, older women, mentors, youth leaders, and spiritual fathers and mothers—carries a responsibility to invest in the next generation. Train up a child according to his way—guiding each child's unique wiring under God's design. Raising sons to provide, protect, lead with humility, and treat women with dignity. Raising daughters to love their families, walk in strength and wisdom, and live self-controlled lives. Modeling repentance and honesty—children don't need perfect parents, but parents who walk with a perfect Savior. The church's calling: producing the next generation of Ricks, Kens, Debbies, and faithful disciplers. The ultimate end: pointing every child—ours or others—to Jesus, the only One who can save. Next Steps: Identify one young person in your home or church you can intentionally invest in this week. Pray through Deuteronomy 6, look for natural moments “when you sit, walk, lie down, and rise up,” and bring God into real-life conversations. Then choose one simple practice—an apology, a conversation about Scripture, or an act of sacrificial love—that points them toward Jesus.

Rick and Jay talk about stupid mistakes, shoe money, James Burrows, Cheers, directing people, not getting the girl, and the moment you reveal your big secret and no one cares.Bio: Rick Beren grew up in the Sixties and Seventies in the very liberal Bay Area. Even then, he managed to push the boundaries of tolerance of his parents, teachers, and eventually, the law. Mostly minor indiscretions, and all (always) in the pursuit of fun, but it landed him in the Vacaville State prison for selling one quarter gram of cocaine. The quality was so poor, he should've been convicted of false advertising. Anyway, his girlfriend also was sent to State prison (unfortunately, not by his side) for women. She had sold the same undercover agent, some 200 amphetamine pills. They were in college at the time (1977) and spent about 5 months in jail. The story of Ricks book is told with humor, compassion and a what the fuck attitude of how could this little, entitled, Jew end up in prison with Charles Manson and his ilk? As I say, He was probably always headed in that direction. Speaking of direction. In less than five years after his release, he was the director's assistant on his favorite show, Cheers. Rick found his life calling and immersed himself in the bliss of being around these amazingly talented people. He worked his way up the ladder and became a director himself and on that very show!  He went on to direct many shows and worked in the industry for four decades. Along the way, he fell into an amazing relationship (with a girl who was not an ex-con) and they have two (so far not ex-con) daughters. Life turned out pretty fucking great. And the highlight of his life and career was being able to spend time with Jay ( the legend) Kogen in an intimate (edited) two hour conversation. Jay wants his time backing the form of a poker game where he can monetize his efforts.

This Devotional address with President Alvin F. and Sister Jennifer E. Meredith was delivered on Tuesday, September 16th at 11:30 AM MST in the BYU-Idaho I-Center. Alvin F. Meredith III became the 18th president of Brigham Young University-Idaho on August 1, 2023. He was sustained as a General Authority Seventy on April 3, 2021, and continues to serve in that role today. Prior to his call as a General Authority, President Meredith served as president of the Utah Salt Lake City South Mission. He also served as an Area Seventy in the North America Southeast and Asia Areas, and in a number of other Church callings including as a full-time missionary in the Utah Salt Lake City Mission. In his professional career, President Meredith worked as a senior executive of Asurion in Tennessee, Hong Kong, and Singapore. He also worked for The Boston Consulting Group and GE Capital. President Meredith earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Brigham Young University and a Master of Business Administration in finance from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Jennifer E. Meredith received a bachelor's degree in communications from Brigham Young University. She worked in Human Resources for Franklin Covey. Sister Meredith served as a mission leader with her husband in the Utah Salt Lake City South Mission. She has served as a presidency member in multiple church organizations and as a full-time missionary in the Argentina Salta Mission. President and Sister Meredith were married on June 6, 1998, in the Salt Lake Temple, and they are the parents of six children.
