John Hall has been CEO of the family-run Rickenbacker guitar company since 1984, right around when R.E.M.'s Peter Buck was inspiring a generation of jangly bands with his Rick riffs. The Beatles had led a Rickenbacker surge 20 years earlier as John Lennon and George Harrison played Ricks in A Hard Day's Night and prompted the Byrds' Roger McGuinn to get a 12-string Rickenbacker and basically to invent folk rock. Hall tells a hell of a story about meeting the Beatles and McGuinn, and he reflects on company's history, which dates back to 1931. He explains why Rickenbacker still makes all of its guitars at one California factory instead of expanding its production; discusses the company's fierce trademark protection; weighs distinctions among hollow-bodied, solid-bodied, 6-string and 12-string models; addresses whether pricey vintage Ricks are actually better than new ones; and, once and for all, clears up the pronunciation of “Rickenbacker.”

Thunderbolts* Marvel has been pretty hit and miss of late, It's TV has been great but some of the films have felt a little under-cooked. We have had a new Captain America film which some thought flew too close to the sun so now it's time for the B-team lineup to take centre stage. Will this NEW film AVENGE the sacred timeline? Will it be a bolt of exciting lightning or more of a belated and low energy roll of thunder? Or...will it change it's title 4 days after release confusing the hell out of everyone?! All 4 of our team of loveable misfits are on board for this show and we each had a fair bit to say about Thunderbolts* especially that damn asterisk! Long Before Sarah Lieberman and J.C. Ricks were awarded “Best Chicken & Waffles” in the country by Good Morning America in 2023, they were running Dandelion Cafe, their 40-seat breakfast and brunch concept in Bellaire, TX.  As a teen, Lieberman worked in her parent's pizza restaurant.  After a brief career in the oil industry, she returned to hospitality in 2016 to open Dandelion Cafe. Ricks had studied culinary arts and began his career in fine dining before meeting Lieberman and joining her at Dandelion Cafe. Their relationship blossomed personally and professionally into a partnership that grew Dandelion Cafe from a small coffee and pastry shop to a popular neighborhood breakfast and brunch concept. Known for their creative approach to breakfast, Lieberman and Ricks offer a seasonal menu with fresh local products. Specialty items include lemon blueberry and brioche strawberry French toast. Ricks manages the kitchen and Lieberman is responsible for service and operations. "We work very well together and have created a sense of family among our staff,” says Lieberman, crediting the positive work environment for building a team that helped expand the concept to three units. Adds Ricks, “Being married and parents helps us to lead with empathy and better engage and support our staff.” In this episode, Lieberman and Ricks share advice for creating and growing a successful concept, emphasizing the importance of creativity, community involvement, and satisfying the customer. “Success is much more than serving good food and beverages,” says Lieberman. “It's bonding with your guest."

What's a little bigger than a bike, a lot smaller than a car, and might be the tool you didn't know you needed to get a big haul home from the grocery store two miles away in the pouring rain? The answer is actually an entire category of vehicles that aren't common on U.S. roads — but with the right mix of policy, code, and infrastructure reform, we could see a lot more of them. Today on the Brake, we sit down with Karina Ricks of CityFi and Benjie De La Peña of the Shared Use Mobility Center to talk about all things mini-mobility, also known as light urban vehicles (LUVs), personal light moblity (PLMs), Neighboorhood Electric vehicles, (NEVs), and about a million other acronyms. Whatever you call them, Ricks and De La Peña recently won a $750,000 federal grant to help American communities encourage their use – only to find out, days later, that the grant might be in jeopardy thanks to President Trump's executive orders.  Listen in to learn more about their project and how you can help keep it alive.
