Katherine Mitchell DiRico uses drawing, sculpture, light, and sound elements to create multimedia installations that investigate how we negotiate connectivity and sense perception in today’s networked world. Solo exhibitions include the Abigail Ogilvy Gallery, Boston, MA; Carol Schlosberg Alumni Gallery at Montserrat College of Art, Beverly, MA; Five Seven Delle Project Space, Boston, MA; Porcelynne Gallery, San Francisco, CA; and a solo commission by HUBweek. Selected group exhibitions include the Edinburgh College of Art, Scotland; Stockwell Studio, London, England; Transmediale Festival, Berlin, Germany; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Grossman Gallery at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Massachusetts Campus Compact Conference on Civic Engagement, Boston, MA; SOMArts Cultural Center, 66 Balmy Gallery, and Crucible Steel Gallery, San Francisco, CA; and the September Gallery, Hudson, NY. Katherine was awarded the Montague Travel Grant and the President’s Research Grant from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the 2018 Walter Feldman Fellowship from the Arts & Business Council of Greater Boston, juried by curator Jen Mergel. She holds a BA from Smith College and the University of Dakar, Senegal, and an MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Tufts University. On LIVE Arts with Savona we hear PART TWO of the panel discussion with the artist JR and gallerist Jeffrey Deitch talk about his career and installation SO CLOSE.On the exterior of Pier 94 at the Armory Show, the artist and 2018 Academy Award nominee, JR, debuted a monumental work, transforming archival Ellis Island photographs into a large-scale installation.Presented in partnership with Artsy and Jeffrey Deitch, SO CLOSE(2018) was the marquee feature of the fair’s Platform section, curated by Jen Mergel, who selected fifteen site-responsive works sited around Pier 92 & 94 under the theme, The Contingent.
