Through sensuality, survival, and sharp-witted grace, David Jester paints what too many won't even say out loud. In this powerful episode, Jester reflects on art as confession, HIV survivorship, aging in a queer body, and the brutal cost of being visible. His canvases don't perform—they speak, reminding us what it means to be seen and still stand tall.Recorded in conjunction with Pride NOT Permission and the 50 Postcards project, this conversation dives into the emotional core of Jester's latest work: paintings that don't seek resolution, but insist on truth.

This week was a solo episode unfortunately, Artsy was sick but I did get her rating afterwards! For a DC dive into anime, this was a very good one to go into. While Harley is again the most obvious true main character, some of the other characters really steal the show like Clayface. His version is this is easily my favorite version ever. Coming to her legal practice with a unique blend of art history knowledge and legal expertise, Shionoiri has spent over two decades championing artists and navigating intricate legal challenges in contemporary art and estate management. From her beginnings in corporate law to her influential roles at institutions like the Guggenheim Museum and Artsy, Shionoiri‘s career journey has much to learn from for aspiring lawyers and artists alike! We discuss how her undergraduate research into the conceptual art and subsequent trial of Genpei Akasegawa prompted her to learn more about and eventually help artists navigate the limits of artistic and free expression. Back in 1911, the Mona Lisa didn't get a lot of attention. Art critics considered it an excellent example of a painting from the renaissance era, but the general public wasn't nearly so enamored. That changed in August of that year, when someone plucked it off the wall of the Louvre, busted it out of its glass box and frame, and took off with it. Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! For this episode, Kristin pulled from: “Who stole the Mona Lisa?” by Simon Kuper for Slate “Stolen: How the Mona Lisa became the world's most famous painting,” by James Zug for Smithsonian Magazine “Stealing Mona Lisa,” by Dorothy and Thomas Hoobler for Vanity Fair The documentary “Mona Lisa is Missing” “When Picasso went on trial for stealing the Mona Lisa,” by Ian Shank for Artsy.net “The man who stole the Mona Lisa,” by Laura Cumming for The Guardian “The Theft That Made The ‘Mona Lisa' A Masterpiece,” NPR.org Are you enjoying An Old Timey Podcast? In today's episode, we dive into the deeply transformative work of DanaidX—a collaborative force comprised of Hope Brooks and Angela Yarian. Fresh off their participation in FOTO(grafia) 2025 and their Artsy.net solo exhibition Goddess, Myths, and Monsters, we explore how this duo crafts a visual dialogue on womanhood, vulnerability, and resilience. Through the evocative medium of cyanotype, Brooks and Yarian blur the lines between personal grief and universal myth, using their art to dismantle archetypes and reframe cultural expectations. Their works, such as Matron and Placenta #1, challenge perceptions of strength and interdependence while reclaiming the narratives surrounding cis and trans women. Join us as we unpack their artistic philosophy, process, and the power of care in creation. DanaidX reimagines ancient myths and modern struggles, offering a blueprint for finding beauty in imperfection and strength in limitation. Dive into Jennifer Nerio's latest work, Aftertaste, where she masterfully blends humor and introspection to explore the impermanence of memory and life itself. Through playful imagery like melting popsicles and vanitas-inspired portraits, Nerio invites us to reflect on fleeting moments and familial legacy with a mix of levity and depth. Her participation in The Bureau of Queer Art's residency has pushed her work into more personal and existential territory, making Aftertaste one of her most intimate and thought-provoking pieces yet. In this episode of the Valley Today, host Janet Michael speaks with Niki Foster from the Front Royal-Warren County Chamber of Commerce. The conversation covers a wide range of topics including the significance of Small Shop Saturday, upcoming events, and the importance of supporting local businesses. The discussion begins with a lighthearted exchange about recording on Black Friday and the chilly weather outside. Janet and Niki commend each other for not partaking in the Black Friday madness, instead choosing to support local businesses on Small Shop Saturday. They then transition into the main subject of the upcoming events organized by the Chamber of Commerce. One such event is 'Coffee and Conversation,' which has been running since July and has quickly become a community favorite. It offers informative yet casual meet-ups where attendees can interact with local officials and learn more about the community. Niki shares her excitement for the December 6th event featuring leaders from Warren County Fire and Rescue Services. The conversation also delves into the upcoming Christmas Parade, scheduled for December 7th. Niki emphasizes the importance of timely registration and outlines the logistical challenges of organizing such a large event. Janet also humorously remarks on the ridiculousness of last-minute entries trying to be part of the parade. Following that, they discuss the 'Merry Market,' which will have 48 vendors offering unique, locally-made products. Janet and Niki underscore the value of shopping local not only during the holidays but throughout the year. They mention how buying locally-made products keeps money within the community and helps small businesses thrive. Niki details the various activities happening downtown on parade day, including carriage rides, Christmas classics at Royal Cinemas, and special events at local businesses like Stone Branch Center for the Arts and Artsy. There will also be food trucks and musical performances, making it a full-day event for the community to enjoy. Wrapping up the conversation, Janet and Niki talk about an upcoming Business After Hours event at Royal Cinemas, where donations will be collected for the foster care program. The event will conclude with a free screening of 'It's a Wonderful Life,' making it a festive occasion for networking and holiday cheer.

Ben Cuevas weaves their identity, resilience, and activism into art that transcends the personal and the political. Through groundbreaking works like Knit PrEP—a knitted sculpture reimagining the HIV-prevention pill as a symbol of care and community—Cuevas dismantles stigma and bridges narratives of otherness. In this episode of High Theory, Faye Raquel Gleisser tells us about Risk. A calculable danger in economics, athletics, sociology, or healthcare, risk has become a socially constructed danger that changes who we are and how we move through the world. Faye asks us to think about how risk management and risk literacy shaped the conceptual and performance work of American artists in the late twentieth century. Who is at risk? Who is safe? And how do we know? Faye's book, Risk Work: Making Art and Guerrilla Tactics in Punitive America, 1967–1987 (U Chicago Press, 2023) studies how artists in the US starting in the 1960s came to use guerrilla tactics in performance and conceptual art, maneuvering policing, racism, and surveillance. As US news covered anticolonialist resistance abroad and urban rebellions at home, and as politicians mobilized the perceived threat of “guerrilla warfare” to justify increased police presence nationwide, artists across the country began adopting guerrilla tactics in performance and conceptual art. Risk Work tells the story of how artists' experimentation with physical and psychological interference from the late 1960s through the late 1980s reveals the complex and enduring relationship between contemporary art, state power, and policing. Drawing on art history and sociology as well as performance, prison, and Black studies, Gleisser argues that artists' anticipation of state-sanctioned violence invokes the concept of “punitive literacy,” a collectively formed understanding of how to protect oneself and others in a carceral society. Faye Raquel Gleisser is an associate professor of art history at Indiana University and curator, whose work focuses on three main subject areas: art and tactical intervention; the racial logics of archives; and curatorial ethics and canon formation. By bridging curation, art history, and performance studies, she investigates histories of art that challenge intertwined anti-Black societal structures and patriarchal, white-centering notions of value that have long limited the canon of “American art.” She approaches art as a material manifestation of sociopolitical conditions and artists as theorists of power and social encounter. In the episode Faye names several artists including Asco, Chris Burden, the Guerrilla Girls, Tehching Hsieh, and Adrian Piper. Folk music of the 1960s and 1970s was a genre that was always shifting and expanding, yet somehow never found room for so many. In the sounds of soul-folk, Black artists like Terry Callier and Linda Lewis began to reclaim their space in the genre, and use it to bring their own traditions to light- the jazz, the blues, the field hollers, the spirituals- and creating something wholly new, wholly theirs, wholly ours. Soul-Folk (Bloomsbury, 2024) traces the growing imprints of soul-folk and how it made its way from folk tradition to subgenre. Along the way, it explores the musicians, albums, and histories that made the genre what it is. Ashawnta Jackson is a writer based in Brooklyn. This week on The Curatorial Blonde we have Lauryn Levette. Levette sets her colorful figurative works in a dreamscape capturing the subconscious mind and elevating agency and power in Black women. Her paintings and drawings reference personal narrative, pop culture, and spirituality to explore themes of the self, the power of introspection, and learning to assert comfort and vulnerability in a world that is still learning to value it. We meet curator and writer Gemma Rolls-Bentley to discuss her exciting new book Queer Art, recorded in front of a live audience at the Turner Contemporary in Margate.Gemma's debut book Queer Art; From Canvas to Club and the Spaces Between is out now. With nearly 200 artworks selected by leading LGBTQI+ curator Gemma Rolls-Bentley, this book mixes the high-brow with the low, gallery stalwarts with Instagram stars, and the racy with the fabulous. This is a unique celebration of queer life – a must-have for the LGBTQI+ community, art lovers and anyone interested in the culture surrounding queer identity. The twentieth century saw key shifts for the LGBTQI+ community across the western world: from the Stonewall uprising to the first pride parades and homosexuality law reforms. The years following these milestone moments have seen queer life face new challenges, celebrations, injustices and liberations. As ever, this journey has been closely mapped by art and culture. Artists working across all mediums from painting, performance, digital and beyond have captured key moments, from the HIV/AIDS crisis and the rise of drag, to marriage equality and the fight for trans liberation.Gemma was born and raised in South Yorkshire. She spent her early years living on a farm and then in a village on the Yorkshire/Derbyshire border at the edge of Sheffield, where her parents still live. She left when she was 18 to go to Edinburgh University to study Maths & A.I. but graduated with a degree in Art History instead. When she moved to London to do an MA at the Courtauld Institute of Art she discovered that everyone in the art world was posh. She changed her surname to Rolls-Bentley on Facebook as a joke and it stuck. Gemma curated her first exhibition when she was a student in Edinburgh, a group show of fine art students in an abandoned travel agents. She's been curating ever since. She's spent almost two decades working passionately to champion diversity in the field. Curating exhibitions and building art collections internationally, her curatorial practice amplifies the work of female and queer artists as well as providing a platform for art that explores LGBTQ+ identity.Gemma is a creative consultant and advisor for brands, organisations, and cultural projects, in addition to teaching at numerous institutions including the Royal College of Art, the Glasgow School of Art, and Goldsmiths. She spent a decade working at the intersection of art and technology, holding positions of Chief Curator at Avant Arte and Curatorial Director at Artsy. Prior to that she spent 6 years working at Damien Hirst's studio, where she learned a lot about the art world (and what she wanted to help change). She co-chairs the board of trustees for the charity Queercircle, and sits on the Courtauld Association Committee. She was previously a trustee for Deptford X. In 2011, Gemma launched the arts arm of the East London Fawcett Group and ran their 2012-2013 Art Audit campaign.Recent curatorial projects include Tschabalala Self's first public art project at Coal Drops Yard in London, the Tom of Finland Art & Culture Festival, and the Brighton Beacon Collection, which is the largest permanent display of queer art in the UK. In 2023, she curated the group exhibition Dreaming of Home at Leslie Lohman Museum of Art in NYC, and she is the host of the museum's new podcast series.Follow @GemmaRollsBentley Hosted on Acast.
