The moments that actually make us feel like artists are imperfect and impermanent—and often, they make us feel like we're not alone. Our guest star this week is You Can Dance Again founder and creative coach Jess Grippo. We talk about forgiving ourselves for being multi-passionate, the moments that make us feel like artists, the fleeting nature of art and finding your own movement. Over the Edge Podcast with Paige Ray is a weekly chat about pushing creative boundaries, making big moves without knowing all the answers and jumping off a cliff to our dreams while figuring out how to build a plane on the way down. Jess is our first creative coach on the show! Patricia has been wanting to invite her since before our launch. In this episode, we discuss how bodies and creative processes are cyclical and how to design your life to honor those "seasons." Jess shares about what it looks like to adjust her pace as she navigates a new injury. We also explore our relationships with ideas and creativity. Jess Grippo is a dancer, performance artist, author, and creative coach. After leaving the classical ballet path and not dancing for years, she started making her own dance videos, alone in her room. While that habit continues, she's also added quite a few others: starting up an inclusive, creative dance community online and in NYC (You Can Dance Again), making comedic interpretive dances about her dating life and the menstrual cycle (Hungry Ovaries), writing a book and video series (Dance With This Book), and supporting others in their creative, expressive unfolding through her coaching practice. Her work has been featured at TEDxNYU, Lincoln Center's Dance On Camera Festival, the New York Comedy Club, The Vagina Monologues opening act, and more. Her puppy Lucy is her only boss and she frequently daydreams of moving into the loft from Flashdance. Hey loves -- are you a dancer? Or are you someone like ‘doesn’t dance’? Do you dream of a creative career, but then maybe get stuck in the story of ‘not being good enough’ or ‘creative people don’t make money’ or ‘that’s not practical’? Yeah -- I feel ya. Today’s episode is all about that and MORE. I’m hanging out with the amazing Jess Grippo: she’s semi-famous on TikTok for dancing with CVS receipts, quit Ballet at 19, and is a creative coach for adults. We talk about expression, being ‘cool’, taking art classes, what ‘adulting’ really is, and interpretative dances about our periods… amongst other things. It’s the best! Come listen :) xoxo, Eliza The Badass Academy Membership is opening again in July! Hey everyone, happy Friday! I'm loving this episode so much and I hope you will too! Jess Grippo is so fun and wonderful to be around and she has really inspired me to finally f*cking dance again. In this giggly interview we talked about the following, amongst many other groovy things: - The joy of dancing in your own way and why it's so liberating - Letting go of ideas about what a dance practice should look like - Overcoming body image issues - Creative processes that are joyful and easy Jess Grippo is a dancer, performer, writer, creativity coach, and the author of Dance With This Book. After leaving her ballet career and being distanced from the dance world for years, she started making dance videos alone in her room. These DIY expressions would become the catalyst for reviving her creative expression and later transitioning her career back into dance - but this time, in her own way. Since then, she's been invited to speak and perform at TEDxNYU, Lincoln Center's Dance On Camera Festival, the New York Comedy Club, and more. Her programs and videos have been helping people for years to reclaim dance, feel at home in their bodies, and revive their creative expression. Today on episode 67 we will be speaking to Jess Grippo from JessGrippo.com. BIO: Although she quit dancing after high school and thought she’d missed her chance, Jess proved her 19-year-old self - and society - wrong. Her DIY dance videos on YouTube years later were the catalyst for reviving her dance practice AND transitioning her career back into dance. Since then she’s been invited to speak and perform on stages like TEDxNYU, Lincoln Center's Dance On Camera Festival, New York's Got Talent! competition show, and the New York Comedy Club. While she was once the shyest of shy ballerinas, she’s now frequently found dancing spontaneously with strangers in the streets, subways, airports, parks, and more - and making videos with them. Her “You Can Dance Again” programs and videos have helped hundreds of people in NYC and beyond to reclaim their sense of self through dance, feel at home in their bodies, and revive their creative expression. TOPICS DISCUSSED ON THIS PODCAST: Life of an aspiring dancer - Dance is something Jess dove headfirst into as a child with big dreams of being a professional ballerina, that’s until she decided that didn’t align with her. Transitioning out and back again - Like many artists, Jess lost touch with her craft and felt the pressure of attending a “real college” to find that “real job.” But as most artists know, the passion to create rarely dies as she found herself trying to rediscover what she once loved from a very different point of view. Guiding others through dance - Jess found a freeing way to creatively express herself far from the norm of her past. She shares her new views and how she discovered that it can help other performers and non-performers reconnect, ground, build confidence, and most importantly be able to enjoy life more openly.
