Rabbits, Carrots & Influence

The episode is brought to you by the Tony "Pop Pop" Rogers Stayin' Alive Disco Dodgeball Tournament for St. Jude! Register you, your team or donate at benandtravis.com/dodgeball! What do rabbits eat? Most people would immediately say carrots. Bunny rabbits at Easter have carrots on attached to them. Pictures that kids color usually have a carrot close by. It seems to be a no-brainer because of how much rabbits and carrots appear together. What if I told you that carrots are actually terrible for rabbits? That carrots have a high sugar content, and while a very small dime sized snack of a carrot might be ok for a rabbit on occasion, they are actually very detrimental to their health if eaten in high quantity? This week on The Back of the Pack Podcast: Second Wind, the Road to 200 takes a big step off the mic and onto the streets. We're introducing the Chasing Rabbits Running Club, our brand-new community run club in partnership with Discourse Brewery. This isn't just about logging miles — it's about building on three years of friendship, laughter, and the “no runner left behind” promise that's been at the heart of the podcast since day one. We talk about where the idea came from, what you can expect at our first meet-up on August 21st, and why this club is for everyone, regardless of pace. From the turtle shell tradition to post-run hangs at the brewery, we're creating a space where connection matters more than competition. Whether you're local and ready to join in person or a listener who wants to represent from afar, this is your invitation to run with the pack. Because now, the Back of the Pack runs together.

Welcome back! We're easing back into the swing of things after our summer holidays with a bit of “cucumber season” fare. It's our regularly scheduled programming, just a little bit…sillier.  This week, we take a peek into the world's first “sourdough library” with Karl De Smedt, head of the Puratos Sourdough Institute. Karl gives us a taste of his unconventional career preserving breadmaking biodiversity and explains why the starters in his library are a little like Europeans themselves. Plus: we learn why the Aalborg Zoo in Denmark is encouraging people to bring in unwanted pets and how Dominic “gave” Daniel Radcliffe his career(!). You can take a virtual tour of the Puratos sourdough library here and check out Karl on Instagram here. And if you want to find out more about the Stop Killing Games campaign, watch this video. This podcast was brought to you in cooperation with Euranet Plus, the leading radio network for EU news. But it's contributions from listeners that truly make it all possible—we could not continue to make the show without you! What if the chaos in conspiracy communities was by design? In this thought-provoking conversation, we're joined by a guest who's no stranger to the shadowy overlaps of fringe beliefs, government psyops, and the supernatural. We crack open the “Cass Sunstein Effect” and explore how psychological manipulation, social media echo chambers, and even the church contribute to a distorted search for truth. Simon Whitehead is an English ferreter, professional rabbit manager, traveling game fair demonstrator and author, living & working out of his van in the United Kingdom. After readings about ferreting through the ages from Ancient Rome to Victorian England, we open with Simon painting a picture of a traditional British ferreting rabbit hunt with nets, spades, lurchers [rabbit coursing dogs] and a box of ferrets. We hear of the UK's highly invasive, non-native common rabbit; the modern culture's feelings on hunting & eating wild game; and the need to control the damage of farmers' fields and urban infrastructure. Turning to history we discuss the medieval ferreting of the peasants opening conversations about poaching and class. Getting back to this charming domesticated mustelid, we touch on: working ferrets vs pets, handling, and what happens when one gets stuck down in a warren. We end on stories of digging out ferrets with historical newspaper clippings about hunters found dead in rabbit holes...Check out Simon's book, Pugs & Drummers: A Ferreter's Fable and follow him on Instagram and YouTube. Support Our Numinous Nature on Patreon.Follow Our Numinous Nature & my naturalist illustrations on InstagramCheck out my shop of shirts, prints, and books featuring my artContact: herbaceoushuman@gmail.com

It's a story about a city that constantly surprises. A random bunny spotting turned into a near-obsession for a Toronto journalist. He was trying to track down the answer to a seemingly simple question, "Are there more bunnies in Toronto?" Turns out, it's a pretty tricky question to answer. Host Kris McCusker speaks to Nicholas Hune-Brown, executive editor at The Local, about his trip down a literal rabbit hole to find out what's going on and why you may (or may not) be seeing more bunnies in your backyard. Cannolis are devoured, generational gaps are explored, and no one is safe from a good-natured roasting. The gang even gets philosophical about the future of AI, tech dependency, and whether a podcast cohosted by a chatbot is a sign of progress or just the latest in John's “shiny object” pursuits. Add in digressions on sex robots, drag queens, their enduring Philly/South Jersey accents, and you've got vintage Brand X.Embracing (and fighting with) smart tech: from Alexa to AI assistants, and getting “locked out” by your own devices. The endless debate: online bill paying convenience vs. the analog joy of stamps, checks, and controlWhy generational differences are overrated—and how they bring the crew together (or not)Can a chatbot be a podcast cohost, and why is John considering a whole show with “Denise” the AI?Sex robots, wild AI prompts, and the TV/film moments that traumatized (and bonded) this crew forever

I was recently trying to remember the first time I met S.D. (Sam) Smith, the creator of the wildly popular Green Ember books. I think it was at a homeschool conference a decade ago, back when I was working at The Colson Center. I noticed that one of the booths in the exhibit hall was crowded with kids and their parents. It was Sam's booth, and the kids were going just crazy in their enthusiasm for Sam's “rabbits with swords,” the heroic and delightful characters who are the stars of the Green Ember books. Since then, Sam's Green Ember books – plus other series that we'll talk about today – have sold more than 1.5 million books. Sam's brother Josiah is a key partner in the cottage industry that the Smiths have created, and his son – also named Josiah – is now a co-writer of the Jack Zulu books. I'm also pleased to say that Sam has become a good friend, so this conversation might get a little free-wheeling. We talk about writing the Green Ember and Jack Zulu books, a kickstarter campaign that has already raised more than $200,000 for a video game based on one of the characters in the Green Ember series, and why he has chosen to stay in West Virginia when conventional wisdom says he might have an easier time of it if he moved to Nashville, New York, or one of the other so-called “cultural centers” in the country. I think you'll find Sam's perspective both encouraging and challenging. We had this conversation via zoom. That brings to a close my conversation with S.D. (Sam) Smith. You can find out more about Sam and his work at www.sdsmith.com. By the way, since Sam and I spoke, his kickstarter campaign has significantly exceeded its $200,000 goal. Congratulations to Sam and his team on this milestone. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. I'm  your host Warren Smith. Until next time, may God bless you.
