While Eastertime may prompt a once-in-a-year focus on Easter eggs and the Easter bunny, for Co. Clare teenager, Emma Finucane, aged 18, bunnies are her year-round concern. Since setting up her fledgling business, Just Pets Ireland, last year, she has been slowly but surely increasing her sales of rabbit essentials' subscription boxes, even though she in the throes of preparing for her Leaving Cert. Having grown up on a small farm in Co. Clare, Emma has always found ways to turn a pound from small farm projects. She has reared calves and lambs but turned her attention to breeding and selling pedigree lop-eared rabbits in April 2023, which led to people from all over Ireland travelling to Clare to buy her mild-mannered pet rabbits. "Lop rabbits have been my most successful venture yet. Rabbits are easy to mind, and I have put a lot of effort into not just getting the right breed, but also rabbits with the right personality," says Emma. Discussions with new and experienced pet rabbit owners, who she found were having issues purchasing rabbit feed and bedding exactly when the rabbits needed it, led to her decision to set up a subscription box service to simplify the care of rabbits. The subscription box contains the essential things a rabbit needs every month - bedding, hay and feed - with a selection of rabbit care products and toys offered as optional extras. Her clients can subscribe for as long as they want, and receive a monthly box delivered directly to their door. She has invested her own money in the venture having saved money from jobs, sales of farm animals and her pet rabbits over the years. She now also sells additional rabbit care products, such as water bottles, beds and toys. While Emma is the sole owner of the venture, she gets a lot of practical help and support from her family. Her twin sister, Roisin, often helps her with both the packaging and deliveries of the boxes. Her father helped her with the set up her company and check out stock. Her mother designed her website, www.justpets.ie, where anyone can buy individual boxes or start a subscription. The boxes are delivered nationwide. The two sisters have helped out in both the family's and neighbours' farms, with house construction and renovation, and have done plumbing, tiling, and more. They both spent time in country fairs helping in a neighbour's stand, and this is where they learned the ins and outs of selling and getting customers. Hard work has been a natural part of growing up on a farm, even a small one. "My parents have always made sure my sister and myself have had a wide variety of experiences. They've always included us in any projects they have or encouraged us to work with others for wider experiences," says Emma. Just Pets Ireland is an Irish company, and Emma has, as much as possible, tried sourcing the items in the box in Ireland. The sawdust and hay are from Wicklow, but she's had to get the feed abroad, following the recommendations of a small animal vet specialised in rabbits. "It took a lot of research to get and source the right products, Brexit of course made everything complicated by limiting the products, but as I always wanted to source as much as possible in Ireland it was also not a huge problem," she adds. Emma now has regular customers and subscribers who receive their monthly box. Most of the business has come through her pet rabbit customers, but also through social media. She's hoping to expand further but is also happy with a slow progress as she needs to focus on her Leaving cert this year. "It does get stressful at times, and I can sometimes feel I don't have enough hours in the day for everything that needs to get done. I need to spend a lot of time on my studies in the coming months, but I'm lucky to have help from both family and neighbours. Emma's love of animals keeps her motivated. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week we're going to talk about bunnies, and also learn about how a wild animal differs from its domesticated counterpart. Thanks for all the well wishes in the last few weeks about my surgery. It went just fine and all I have now is a cool-looking new scar, although I was seriously hoarse for about a week. It's pretty weather here in East Tennessee and officially it's spring in the northern hemisphere, so let's talk about some springtime bunnies! Collectively rabbits and hares are called leporids after their family, Leporidae. Leporids are famous for hopping instead of walking, and they're able to do so because their hind legs are longer than their front legs and have specialized ankle joints. Ancestors of leporids developed this ankle as much as 53 million years ago, but their legs were much shorter so they probably ran instead of hopped. Hares have longer legs than rabbits and can run faster as a result, but both rabbits and hares are known for their ability to bound at high speeds. When a rabbit or hare runs, it pushes off from the ground with the tips of its long hind toes, and its toes are connected with webbed skin so they can't spread apart. If the toes did spread apart, they would be more likely to get injured. Rabbits and hares also don't have paw pads like dogs and cats do. The bottom of its foot is covered with dense, coarse fur that protects the toes from injury. Its long claws help it get a good purchase on the ground so its feet won't slip. Leporids eat plants, including grass, weeds, twigs, and bark. Animals that eat grass and other tough plants have specialized digestive systems so they can extract as many nutrients from the plants as possible. Many animals swallow the plants, digest them for a while, then bring up cuds of plants and water to chew more thoroughly. Rabbits and hares don't chew their cud in that way, but they do have a system that allows them to twice-digest the plants they eat. After a leporid eats some plants, the plant pieces go into the stomach, naturally, and then travel into the first part of the large intestine, called the cecum. The cecum separates the softer parts of the plants from the harder, less digestible parts. The hard parts are compressed into hard pellets that the rabbit poops out. But the soft parts of the plants, which are most nutritious, develop into softer pellets. These are called cecotropes, and as soon as the rabbit poops out the cecotropes, it immediately eats them again. This allows the digestive system to get a second round to extract more nutrients from the plants. Hares aren't domesticated, but rabbits have probably been domesticated many times in different places over the last several thousand years, first for food and fur, and then as pets. The domesticated rabbit we have today is descended from the European rabbit, also called the cony. If other species of rabbit were ever domesticated, we don't have record of it. The rabbit has also been introduced into the wild in places it has no business to be, like Australia, where it's an invasive species. You know where else the European rabbit has been introduced? The British Isles. It's native to mainland Europe, not England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and smaller islands nearby. Historians think the rabbit was introduced to England soon after the year 1066,

Scientists are recruiting elephant seals to learn more about the oceans' twilight zoneBelow about 200 metres there's still a lot going on in the ocean, but it's tremendously hard to observe and understand even with modern technology. Scientists from the University of California, Santa Cruz have maintained a long-term monitoring study of elephant seals. The team, including PhD candidate Allison Payne, has discovered they can use the seals as scientific sentinels, to help humans better understand the conditions of the dark deep sea. The research was published in the journal Science.A cave in Poland reveals a grisly history of stone-age cannibalismA detailed study of the remains of ten individuals who lived — and died — 18,000 years ago in Poland has revealed that they were butchered and probably eaten as the final act in a prehistoric conflict. Characteristic cut marks on their skulls and bones show that they were systematically de-fleshed, before their fragmented remains were tossed aside. This research was led by Francesc Marginedas, a PhD candidate at the Catalan Institute of Human Palaeo-ecology and Social Evolution in Tarragona, Spain.  Their research was published in Scientific Reports.Our ears are weird. Is that just because they're gills?Evolution tends to repurpose things, even as it massively transforms organisms outwardly. A fascinating example is the new finding that the unique cartilage in our external ears seems to have once been gill tissue from our ancient fish ancestors. Gage Crump from the University of Southern California made the discovery using a series of gene-editing experiments on zebrafish. The research was published in the journal Nature.Rabbits replenish their calcium by digesting their teethRabbit teeth constantly grow during the life of the rodents, which means they need calcium to regrow them. A new study suggests that one of the ways rabbits supply calcium for their teeth is by ingesting and recycling the tooth material that grinds off as they chew.  Dr. Johanna Mäkitaipale is a veterinary orthopedic surgeon and a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki, Finland. She led this research that was published in The Veterinary Journal.Is dark energy dying? A new theory suggests that the universe has different time zonesFor more than two decades, cosmologists have been invoking the idea of a mysterious dark energy to explain observations that appeared to show an acceleration in the expansion of the universe. But more recent observations are adding weight to a different theory that does away with the dark energy. Ryan Ridden, an astronomer from the University of Canterbury, said the “timescape theory” suggests time simply runs differently in the large empty regions of the universe. Their study is in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
