Today on episode 75 we will be speaking to Ellen Downes with Fashion Revolution. BIO: Entrepreneur and slow fashion activist, Ellen has a background in business, events, and fundraising. In 2015 she co-founded outdoor cinema company Enchanted Cinema through which she pursued her passion to support local and independent business and engage in social justice and sustainability through art. Having always bought and sold vintage, Fashion Revolution Vietnam has provided a platform through which she can also work with and promote the work of vintage shops in Vietnam who support the notion that clothes should not be seen as disposable, but as items to love and make last! Ellen is passionate about the importance of celebrating, preserving and supporting the work of local designers and makers in Vietnam and wants to focus the Fashion Revolution movement in Vietnam towards also raising the voices of garment factory workers, the majority of whom are female, who are producing in unsafe and undignified conditions. Ellen coordinates Fashion Revolution for Vietnam and also action and events in Hanoi. TOPICS DISCUSSED ON THIS PODCAST: Discovering your creative voice. Ellen has always had an entrepreneurial side to her but being an advocate for fashion and body positivity was not in her original plans. We share how she grew from studying French in the UK to becoming a voice for a better fashion industry. What is Fashion Revolution - How and why Ellen got involved in spreading the movement focusing on fast fashion on the other side of the globe, Vietnam How relocating has provided a deeper connection to what she advocates. Ellen may have realized this passion to spread the word of sustainable and ethical fashion, but the travels that brought her to Vietnam has allowed her to work and connect on an even deeper level. She has met with an array of craftsmen and is helping provide a bigger platform for their voices and work. TODAY ON EPISODE 77 WE WILL BE SPEAKING TO ANNA VALERO WITH TAMGA DESIGNS. Anna is a dear friend of mine that I connected with immediately when I arrived in Vietnam. She is a veteran in my eyes as an ex-pat. She is open and easy to chat with and took me in during the pivotal moment of not knowing how I was going to spend my days. I am internally grateful for her. Our weeks are regularly scheduled around multiple coffee dates where we have begun to know each other quite well. The moment I heard about her brand Tamga I was intrigued by her story. How does this sweet Spanish native find herself in Vietnam designing wonderfully curated sustainable fashion? I had to learn more. I am so proud of what she is doing and can’t advocate for her brand enough. This episode is inspiring for anyone looking to pursue a career in the very complicated fashion industry, but most importantly it’s inspiring to remind you that education is key. It’s her constant need to grow that has led her to build a brand that is working alongside our planet and not against it. BIO: Anna Valero was born and raised in Spain under a family in the textile business. Fashion has always been a part of her life but she was determined to learn from the ground up by educating herself around the world. Anna studied abroad in Italy, worked heavily in the family business, expanded to educating and managing teams in factory/production level of Bangladesh, to eventually co-creating her own sustainable and ethically made designer line, Tamga. TOPICS DISCUSSED ON THIS PODCAST: The importance of learning all aspects of the industry - Anna Dives into how she felt college wasn’t enough for her to feel ready to create something of her own. She was determined to learn all aspects of the industry to truly be inspired by creating a quality product that led her down so crazy journeys around the world. How working abroad opened up her eyes to the many faults in the fashion world. Anna explains how through her experience at the factory production level and the connections she made abroad, she quickly became educated on how unsustainable and unethical the industry is and how she wanted to be part of the change. Building a brand abroad. With the help of her two partners, she was able to create a brand that felt morally right in the industry. A brand that began in Bali and is now ran from Canada and Vietnam. BIO: Brent Hartinger and Michael Jensen are novelists, screenplay writers, columnists, and travel bloggers currently traveling the world as digital nomads. TOPICS DISCUSSED ON THIS PODCAST: Selling it all for nomad living- Brent and Michael were one of the few who acted on what they said. You wouldn’t believe what the final straw was for them to actually pick up and go, it’s a common complaint many Americans had, but very few made the moves to do. How two opposite personalities balance their travels. One is adventurous and the other is cautious, but the two different dynamics create a wonderful balance when exploring the world. Being a slo-mad. Nomads are expected to be on the move constantly but as couple in their 50’s they decided to take, what they call, a “slomad” approach to travel. They are on-the-go but on a much slower pace and highly suggest others to give it a try. Traveling as a gay couple . Brent and Michael share their experiences in other countries that may not be as open to LGBTQ communities. Today on episode 48 we are having a chat. Just me and the mic and your lovely ears. It’s a deep episode that I find important to discuss. I will be opening up to you about my personal experiences with loss and grief. Something that I rarely share with others. I debated if this would be sharing too much. Why get so personal? Because I’d like you to know where I have come from so you can understand my passion for our message here with GOAL Traveler. It has come apparent to me, even more now, as to why I’m so fueled to live life “my way.” I accept and love myself more for straying from the crowd and choosing a nonconventional path. I have often second guessed myself, fear what others may think, and wondered if I was selfish because of it. You see I have dealt with great loss and tragic events in my life. I’ve seen what these events can do to a person and a family. Loss and grief is a process that will never be easy. It will create wounds that never fully heal. However, there is a crazy blessing to be found behind each one that I have become internally grateful for. These events have taught me the most important lessons in life and that is to never take it for granted. I have learned to appreciate everything that is around me (often brought to tears on the smallest of things), to love deeply, and live freely. Each experience has made me more and more aware of how important it is for me to love all areas of my life. You may have had similar experiences or you may have been lucky not too, yet. Regardless, we humans will all share this. We are all here to live and one day we will all say goodbye. The only thing I want in life is for you to experience it fully. Get Out there And Live it!
