POPULARITY
In this podventure, we discuss the episode “A Mission for Jimmy,” in which Jimmy Barclay experiences a major paradigm shift after discovering the truth behind missionary work through an adventure with Dan Isidro in the jungles of Nicaragua. Also, doing things even when you don't want to, the messiness of missions history, and dreaming in foreign languages. Can you dream in perfect Spanish if you don't know how to speak it? Author's Note: The book which Emilee references is called Christianity Rediscovered by Vincent Donovan.

What Christian kid from the 90's/00's hasn't listened to, or at the very least, known about Adventures in Odyssey? For all you badies who missed it, Adventures in Odyssey is an Evangelical radio drama/comedy created and produced by Focus on the Family. To date, over 900 episodes of Odyssey have aired across the globe, and spin-off products include books, cartoons, computer games, music albums, and of course, TONS of merchandise. At one point, Chic-Fil-A even included Adventures in Odyssey cassette tapes in their kids meals. To say it's a popular program is… an understatement, to say the least! Our guest this week is voice actor and activist David Griffin, who voiced a character named Jimmy Barclay, as well as several others. Beginning in his preteen years, David worked with Adventures in Odyssey for over a decade, and appears on 80+ episodes of the show. He absolutely loved voice acting, but his time with Odyssey coincided with his burgeoning struggles with mental health, and subsequent disenchantment with Christianity. Join us as he discusses the good, the bad, and the ugly aspects of being a young person working on a huge faith-based radio program! Dave Griffin is an actor, writer, creative, father, husband, and delegate officer in his local Democratic party. Dave is also the voice of the beloved character "Jimmy Barclay" in the well-known audio drama "Adventures in Odyssey". He started on the show in its first official season around the age of 10 and continued to voice the popular character for many years until ultimately the character was written off the show. Struggling with mental illness growing up, the show became an escape from the everyday lows of life. As that season came to a close Dave was confronted with many deep questions about faith, life, and politics. He'd been hesitant to come out and discuss much of this journey up until this point, but recently felt it was time to share some of this journey with those who are interested with the hope that honesty and vulnerability on the fronts of subjects like mental illness, dealing with the medical system, and experiencing religious and political ill-treatment might help advance our conversations on these fronts. It was great to talk to Dave. In the past we've had a few chances to chat a little bit and have worked together on a few projects, but up until now we haven't had a chance to go quite this deep. I'm thankful Dave took the time to chat. I think you guys will appreciate his story and our conversation. There are some heavy bits, some light fun bits, and some crazy stories. I found it challenging on multiple fronts, but ultimately it gave me a lot of important stuff to think about. In this episode, we talk about Prejudice and Racism with our special guest, Jave Griffin. Jave (or Dave) Griffin is probably best known as the voice actor who portrayed the character Jimmy Barclay on Focus on the Family's audio drama "Adventures in Odyssey." He is currently working on a few media projects which he touches on at the end of our conversation.
In this episode from "A Place of Wonder," Jimmy Barclay decides he's too old for Whit's End and the Imagination Station, but comes to a new discovery through an imaginative boy named Lawrence. Plus, hear an interview with writer/director Phil Lollar and voice actor Gabriel Encarnacion.
David Griffin talks about the difficulty of the Barclay family's move to Pokenberry Falls and the episodes where he returned: "Living in the Gray" and "The Triangled Web"
David Griffin talks about acting on Odyssey, working in the studio, and about dealing with changes in his life.
We are thrilled to be joined on the show today by two fantastic guests! First we have a great conversation with Jave Griffin (also known as David Griffin), the voice of Jimmy Barclay on Adventures in Odyssey. We chat about his work on AIO and about a new audio drama that he is creating called Edwin & The Orbs. And if that wasn't enough we also have a great interview with Paul McCusker about the upcoming Radio Theatre production of Oliver Twist! We also share some listener feedback. But as always, Roy kicks things off with an informative newscast.
