He made his Broadway debut starring in “Pippin”, for which he won a Theatre World Award, followed by “Children of a Lesser God”, for which he won a whole slew of awards including a Tony and a Drama Desk Award. He also starred in “The Caine Mutiny Court Martial”, for which he received a Drama Desk Award nomination, “M. Butterfly”, “Love Letters”, “Ragtime” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. Off-Broadway, he starred in “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead” and “Counsellor at Law”, for which he received the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Lead Actor in a Play, as well as nominations for both the Outer Critics' and Drama League Awards. Some of his most popular feature films are “Getting Straight”, “The Boys From Brazil”, “Someone to Watch Over Me”, “Another Stakeout”, “21 Grams”, “The Candlelight Murders” and “Being the Ricardos”. On TV you've seen him in dozens of TV shows including “Family”, for which he received an Emmy Award nomination, “Crazy Like a Fox”, “Bureau of Alien Detectors”, “Star Trek Enterprise”, “The Young and the Restless”, “Desperate Housewives”, “Dear White People”, “Claws” and many more. He's directed many stage productions, including “Les Liaisons Dangeureuses”, “Macbeth”, “Wait Until Dark”, “Brigadoon”, “Guys and Dolls” and many other shows. Our guest is also a brilliant composer, which comes as no surprise, given that he's the son of the greatest pianist of all time, in my opinion, Arthur Rubinstein. And he's the grandson of the renowned Polish violinist, conductor and composer Emil Młynarski. He's written the music scores for a number of movies and TV shows including “Jeremiah Johnson”, “The Candidate”, “Family”, “The Ordeal of Patty Hearst”, “Johnny Belinda”, “China Beach” and “A Walton Wedding”. And believe me, I'm just scratching the surface of this man's prodigious body of work. When we think of great relationships we inherently think of being such a great and attractive person that others are just drawn to us. I think we are errantly programmed in grade school where it literally is a popularity contest. If you're big or strong or pretty or a star quarterback, you are voted homecoming and prom royalty. This doesn't work in the real world where we grow up and actually want to feel connected to people and if someone can't do that we don't care what their skills and looks. Think of the people in your life you feel cared for by. What is the common denominator? They listen to you. They care about your life and opinions. You matter to them. So do you want more or better relationships? They don't come from telling people how great you are. They come from listening to others and helping them feel great about themselves. I'm with Renée Marino for part 2 to walk and talk through her personal Values, Motives, and Habits. In part 1 we hit on the key message from her book, Becoming a Master Communicator. Renée is a Broadway star and played the lead female role in Clint Eastwood's, Jersey Boys. She knows…communication. I discuss her personal relationship values she led off with just this...listening. Her goal is to be what she calls, a "complete listener." Listen in to hear how she defines this. She shares her recent efforts with inner child work. Her health and wellness goals center around being a powerful communicator with herself and giving focus to her self-worth, and the dangers in her career if she tied her identity and worth to the casting directors opinion of her. At the end in asking Renee about the things she does just to give herself joy and inspiration, she cites dancing, and singing, and you get a treat, as she gives us a stanza from "Someone to Watch Over Me." You can get Renee's book, "Becoming a Master Communicator" anywhere and when you do, go to FreeGiftfromRenee.com for two gifts she has for you. We're getting some old-timey literature vibes this week on "Voyager"! First up: a Malon ship is experiencing mechanical issues, but is it normal wear and tear or a deformed madman lurking in the depths in "Juggernaut". After that, "Voyager" goes all "My Fair Lady" and invites one of the "Kids in the Hall" along for the ride in "Someone to Watch Over Me". Also this week: bathing methods, a Canada and a Canadian, and uncorking bottle episodes!

Today's declaration reminds me of the old standard by George Gershwin, “Someone to Watch Over Me.” I used to sing that song six nights a week when I sang professionally many years ago. That old love song wasn't about our relationship with God, but the line about the “little lamb” lost in the wood makes me think of the Good Shepherd who leaves the 99 in search of the one. I am incredibly thankful for the promise of God's watchful presence. As the lyrics to the old standard go, “There's a somebody I'm longing to see,” but I don't have to hope that He'll turn out to be the Someone I already know Him to be. God has revealed His character and His promises over and over in Scripture. Even though I read only verses 13-22 in this episode of Believe & Speak, I read the entire Psalm to myself before recording this episode. The first three verses confirmed that Psalm 33 truly is a love song to God. And this “old standard” was written long before big band music made its debut on the American stage. Verses 13, 14, and 15 of Psalm 33 say that God looks down, sees, watches and considers. In other words, He doesn't just glance your way now and then. He keeps watch. Constant, vigilant watch. There's no better help and shield than God. No better set of eyes than God. No better someone to watch over me… and you. It's no wonder countless love songs have been written about the love of God. Maybe you can think of a worship song even now that acknowledges what we've been declaring this episode. The first ten episodes of my video podcast, “Find Joy” walk you through my book, Longing to Belong, and the entire series is now available for viewing. Learn more on my website at shawnamariebryant.com. This week's scripture: Psalm 33:13-22

As a lifelong Frank Sinatra fan, today I'm excited to be speaking with Charles Granata. Chuck is the producer and co-host of Nancy Sinatra's weekly radio show on SiriusXM, “Nancy for Frank,” which recently concluded after 14 years and over 500 episodes. “The Best of Nancy for Frank” continues to air every week. He has worked on several Frank Sinatra box sets, including “A Voice on Air: 1935–1955” and “Sinatra in Hollywood: 1940–1964.” Most recently he oversaw the restoration and reissue of the 1950 LP “Sing and Dance with Frank Sinatra” (Impex Records, 2020). Chuck is the author of two acclaimed books, “Sessions with Sinatra: Frank Sinatra and the Art of Recording” and “Wouldn't It Be Nice: Brian Wilson and the Making of the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds.” And he assisted music legends Phil Ramone and Johnny Mandel in writing their memoirs. I loved hearing how Chuck's childhood passion eventually became a fulfilling career, thanks to many serendipitous connections along the way. Near the end of our conversation, he also shares his personal thoughts on spirituality, which I found very moving. Read “Sessions with Sinatra”: amazon.com/dp/B005HF4DGK Follow Chuck on Facebook: facebook.com/chuckgranata Get his latest Sinatra legacy release: impexrecords.com/sing-and-dance-with-frank-sinatra At the end of this episode, instead of the usual closing music, I'm including a track from my own Sinatra-inspired album, “Someone to Watch Over Me,” which is available on most music platforms.
