Still not ready to leave Christmas behind? Well, neither are we, so this week we're talking all things Joe Dante's Gremlins. Written by Chris Columbus and produced by Steven Spielberg, Gremlins tells the story of a small American town at Christmas, overrun by mischievous and deadly creatures. A critical and commercial success, Gremlins has become a Christmas staple and has a strong, loyal cult following. But, why?
It wasn't difficult to choose the movies for our first Christmas episode. Not only does Joe Dante's Gremlins (1984) hold up as a supremely entertaining movie, but it's also a truly impressive blend of comedy, horror, science fiction, and Christmas movie. But how would the "three rules" actually work in reality? What qualifies as "after midnight"? Heck, what technically qualifies as "eating"?!? And let's talk a bit about that infamous microwave sequence. And it only made sense to match Gremlins up with its much wackier sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990), a film so insane it not only breaks the fourth wall; it demolishes it. Loaded with fun performances, crazy new gremlins, and an adorably chaotic tone, G2 poses even more strange questions. Like: “what is genetic sunblock?" and “why the heck is Hulk Hogan in this movie?” We cover all this craziness and more in a Gremlin-filled episode of Science vs Fiction!

Join Jess and Andrew for Day 6 of our 31 Films of Halloween journey. Today, our film is Mario Bava's "Black Sunday" AKA "The Mask of Satan". I actually like the alternative title better, and that is the one the film uses for the version streaming on Shudder. There are a few films that we've picked for this month that are new to us as well. This is one of them, and it was a wonderful surprise. Joe Dante's (Gremlins) chapter of "Masters of Horror" is an absolute delight. In an era where an unpopular war is being fought, and spun as popular on politically bias television news programs, the dead soldiers return to give their opinion on the situation. George Romero was a supervisor for this comedically horrific gem. Streaming on Screambox.com.
The Oscar nominations come out THIS TUESDAY, so we've got you prepared and ready with our annual predictions in each of the major six categories. Is it a "Three Billboards Over Ebbing, Missouri" year? Can "Get Out" or "Lady Bird" crash the party? Has everybody forgotten about "The Post" and "Dunkirk?" We also look at the Afghan War drama "12 Strong," with Chris Hemsworth and Michael Shannon. Then we travel to 1990 and wonder how Joe Dante's "Gremlins 2: The New Batch" ever got made. How do 5-year-old Alistair and his Dad celebrate Christmas? The same way they do every other holiday: by watching monster movies! In this special holiday episode, Al and Dad talk about the mandatory holiday viewing of Joe Dante's Gremlins (1984). Listen in to hear Al explain the rules of Mogwai ownership and discuss the film's horror-comedy tone with a food analogy. For this holiday season, the boys rewind to their respective childhoods and visit a cherished classic: Joe Dante's Gremlins. It's not your usual holiday fare, unless your usual holiday fare involves murder, isanity, and chaos. They discuss whether or not the film actually holds up to the harsh light of adulthood, whether those damn rules make any sense, and just how high the author of the film's novelization was. AJ reviews We Need to Talk About Kevin, Paul gripes about The Defenders #1, and then we get around to Nathan's snarky Formspring question of the week. Next: the Gobbledygeek season 2 finale is our year-end round-up of everything we loved (and hated) in 2011.
