After the huge success of the original Gremlins, Warner Bros quickly wanted a sequel. The people who'd actually made Gremlins, not least director Joe Dante? The thought of making another was not in the slightest big appealing. Until, many years later, the studio made Dante an offer: if you make Gremlins 2, you can do pretty much whatever you want with it. This is the story of how the ensuing film became one of the most boldest blockbuster sequels of all time. Later in the same decade, Christopher Guest took a small company of actors down to Texas for a month. On a modest budget, he shot over 50 hours of footage, that'd take over a year to edit into a feature film. Even when the resultant movie, Waiting For Guffman, was finished, it took a long time to earn its reputation as a modern comedy classic... Stories of both films are told in this episode. What better way to start off the new year than with chaos only rivaled by that of the real world? Gremlins 2: The New Batch is one of the most anarchist sequels to ever exist, and Max, Liz, and Host Spencer try to parse through this movie with enough decorum to make Brainy Gremlin proud. As is the running joke in this episode, THIS. MOVIE. HAS. EVERYTHING: A 24 hour yogurt shop, Science Twins, Gomez Addams trying to fix a water fountain, a vegetable gremlin, and an opening sequence literally taken from Superman IV... and that is not even 10% of the zaniness.

Few movies blend chaos, comedy, and holiday cheer as seamlessly as Gremlins (1984). This darkly delightful gem from director Joe Dante and producer Steven Spielberg has become a holiday classic for its irreverent tone and unforgettable creatures. Whether you're drawn in by the fuzzy charm of Gizmo or the anarchic antics of his mischievous offspring, Gremlins offers something unique: a satirical horror-comedy that's heartwarming and horrifying. We hope you enjoy this Gremlins (1984) movie review as our last episode of 2024Setting the StageSet in the idyllic small town of Kingston Falls, Gremlins begins with an innocent Christmas gift that goes spectacularly awry. Billy Peltzer (Zach Galligan) receives a Mogwai—a mysterious, cuddly creature named Gizmo—from his father, an eccentric inventor. Along with the gift come three rules: don't expose him to bright light, don't get him wet, and never, ever feed him after midnight. Naturally, all three rules are broken, unleashing a chaotic chain of events as Gizmo spawns a horde of Gremlins, who terrorize the town in increasingly outlandish ways. The Characters: Lovable and LoathsomeGalligan's Billy is the quintessential everyman, navigating the chaos with wide-eyed determination, but the supporting cast truly shines. Phoebe Cates brings depth to her role as Kate, Billy's resourceful love interest, delivering one of the film's most haunting—and unexpectedly poignant—moments with her infamous “Santa Claus” monologue. However, the real stars are the creatures themselves. Gizmo, voiced by Howie Mandel, embodies adorableness, while Stripe, the leader of the Gremlins, is a maniacal scene-stealer. The practical effects and puppetry give these characters a tactile realism that CGI often struggles to replicate.A Genre-Bending TriumphWhat sets Gremlins apart is its masterful tone. The film walks a fine line between horror and comedy, never fully committing to one genre but excelling at both. The Gremlins' antics range from slapstick humour to genuinely unsettling terror, such as the sequence in which they stalk Billy's mother through their eerily decorated home. At the same time, the film pokes fun at American consumerism and small-town clichés, adding a layer of satire that rewards repeat viewings.A Holiday Movie Like No OtherWhile it's often considered a Christmas movie, Gremlins gleefully subverts holiday tropes. Yes, there are twinkling lights, carolers, and a snow-covered backdrop, but the Gremlins themselves turn these festive symbols into instruments of mayhem. A quiet tree becomes a hiding spot for an ambush, and a holiday dinner is interrupted by chaos and destruction. This juxtaposition of cheerful aesthetics with dark comedy makes Gremlins an enduringly fresh experience.Cinematic CraftsmanshipJoe Dante's direction is pitch-perfect, balancing the film's disparate tones with finesse. Jerry Goldsmith's score is equally memorable, alternating between whimsical themes for Gizmo and eerie cues for the Gremlins. Cinematographer John Hora captures the coziness of Kingston Falls before plunging it into chaos, creating a visual dichotomy that enhances the story. The film's practical effects are a standout feature, showcasing the artistry of the pre-digital era. From Gizmo's expressive face to the Gremlins' grotesque transformations, every creature feels alive. It's a testament to the ingenuity of the filmmakers that these effects remain impressive nearly four decades later.Cultural Impact and LegacyReleased in the summer of 1984 alongside Ghostbusters and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Gremlins was part of a pivotal moment in blockbuster history. Its mix of humour and horror challenged traditional genre boundaries, paving the way for films like Beetlejuice and Shaun of the Dead. The movie's success also led to the creation of the PG-13 rating, as its content was deemed too intense for a PG audience but not graphic enough for an R. This marked a turning point in how films were rated, influencing decades of cinema.Gremlins spawned a sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, which leaned even further into self-referential humour. While the sequel is beloved in its own right, the original remains the definitive entry, capturing the perfect balance of whimsy and wickedness. Why Gremlins EnduresPart of what makes Gremlins so enduring is its ability to surprise. Just when you think you've figured out its tone or message, it throws you a curveball, whether it's a heartfelt moment with Gizmo or an unexpectedly dark turn. It's a film that delights in defying expectations, making it a joy to revisit year after year. Moreover, its themes remain relevant. The dangers of irresponsible consumerism, the chaos of unchecked innovation, and the fine line between cute and creepy all resonate just as strongly today as they did in 1984.Final ThoughtsGremlins is more than just a movie—it's a cultural touchstone that continues to inspire filmmakers and entertain audiences. Its blend of humor, horror, and holiday spirit is unmatched, making it a must-watch for fans of 80s cinema and genre mashups. So grab some popcorn (but maybe skip the midnight snack), and let yourself be swept away by the mischievous magic of Gremlins. Just remember the rules. This episode of Born to Watch dives deep into the legacy of Gremlins, exploring its unique blend of comedy, horror, and holiday cheer. Whether you're a first-time viewer or a lifelong fan, this movie review will rekindle your love for a film that remains as delightfully chaotic as ever. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcasthttps://www.borntowatch.com.au/

It's part 3 of our ‘New York' marathon and we're in up in the skyscrapers for “Gremlins 2: The New Batch”. A film in which John Glover portrays a thinly veiled Donald Trump in a far more sympathetic light than would be possible these days; Hulk Hogan is revealed to be younger than any of our hosts; and Christopher Lee has already got rabies. The belated sequel to Joe Dante's original failed to ignite the box office, and seems to have a annoyed many fans of that first film, possibly for the crime of trying to be a bit different, but we find it impossible to not get swept up in the glorious glee with which the titular monsters, and their director, wreak havoc with this movie. Unfettered from the control of his producers, Dante ramps up everything to the point of absurdity, channeling his love of Looney Tunes (including a specially produced Bugs and Daffy intro from the mighty Chuck Jones) with satirical swipes at Corporate culture, the diminishing returns of sequels, and postmodern references to the first film. Packed with cameos and references, this is a non-stop assault, which manages to be both utterly daft and really smart all at once. Watch (re-watch) to avoid spoilers and join us.

We all know the three rules of Gremlins…but we're putting one of those to the test. Hopefully we don't end up on the wrong side of it.Ah, the holiday season is finally upon us. The warmth of the fire. The family togetherness. The gently falling snow. The sound of carols being…dissonantly chanted by hideous gremlins outside our window?!?In what is now the third part of our unintentional trilogy of episodes about the three biggest blockbusters of 1984 (the others being Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Ghostbusters), we turn our attention to a true Christmas movie classic: Joe Dante's Gremlins. While the gremlin life cycle begins as the almost Baby Yoda-esque mogwai form, if you don't follow the three cardinal rules of mogwai care, you're in trouble. For those who don't know…Rule #1 - Don't expose them to bright light (they'll die)Rule #2 - Don't get them wet (they'll multiply)Rule #3 - Never, ever feed them after midnight (they'll turn into mischievous murder demons who will destroy your entire town given the opportunity)We're primarily focusing on Rule #2 for this episode, though. Just how does this peculiar piece of asexual reproduction work? Does it have parallels in nature? Does it make sense within the story of the film? HOW WORRIED SHOULD WE BE?!?You'll just have to watch the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here or check it out on our YouTube page to see what we found!SUGGESTED VIEWING Obviously, 1984's Gremlins is a must, not just for this episode, but for the holiday season in general. But there are those of us who feel that 1990's Gremlins 2: The New Batch is  an even tighter, funnier, and more subversive film. Watch ‘em both and decide for yourself! Similarly the Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai animated series on MAX is well-regarded, although not essential for your understanding of what we talked about this week. But while you're at it, we'd like to also suggest a classic episode of The Twilight Zone, “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” (starring William Shatner, no less!) which features a different look at gremlin lore, in their more traditional roles as saboteurs of technology.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! Gremlins and Ghostbusters at the Box OfficeWe weren't kidding when we said we covered all three of the biggest movies of 1984. The evidence is here…and you can also see how Ghostbusters and Gremlins stacked up against each other on their opening weekends. The Resurrection PlantYes, that sounds like the title of a classic Star Trek episode, but really, this might just be the most pronounced example of a plant that appears dead until you add water!MetamorphosisThe basic Mogwai to Gremlin lifecycle does indeed have parallels in nature! In case you forgot what was taught you in elementary school, here's a refresher.Single Cell Asexual ReproductionHail Hydra! Wait, wrong franchise.Gremlins: The NovelYou see, children, once upon a time there were these things called “novelizations” of popular movies. These books were more than mere adaptations of the movie for print, but often included details (later considered non-canonical) that further fleshed out the story or lore of the film. Gremlins by George Gipe was one of these. In the days when it took forever for a movie to make it from the theaters to TV, we absolutely cherished these things. Keep your eyes peeled and you'll find them in used bookstores, at garage sales, and elsewhere. Original Gremlins DesignsFeast your eyes on the earliest Gremlins concept art here!WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?Remember when we said there were other episodes in our (unintentional) series about the biggest movies of 1984? Twenty episodes after conquering the 1984 original, Marc and Jordan tackle Joe Dante's 1990 sequel. Given full creative control, and a bigger budget, Warner figured Dante would produce something sensible. He did not. It may be the Looniest film ever made, which helps considering the presence of Chuck Jones, Leonard Maltin and Jerry Goldsmith. Needless to say, we had a nice time with this one. The plaintiffs, ranging from minors to adults, claim that Combs and his associates engaged in misconduct spanning several decades. Notably, one lawsuit involves a 13-year-old who alleges that Combs assaulted her at an afterparty following the MTV Video Music Awards in September 2000.These legal actions are part of a series of accusations against Combs, including claims of drug-facilitated assaults and coercion. Buzbee's firm has received thousands of calls from potential victims, with over 120 individuals currently represented. The lawsuits aim to hold Combs accountable for his alleged actions and seek justice for the victims.
