This week on The Rotten Horror Picture Show Podcast, Clay and Amanda are giving listeners a special sample of their Patreon sequel coverage with a deep dive into the gloriously chaotic Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Directed by Joe Dante, this sequel takes everything from the original Gremlins and cranks it to absolute cartoon insanity—mutant gremlins, fourth-wall breaks, satire of corporate America, and enough anarchic energy to short-circuit an entire skyscraper. Clay and Amanda unpack why Gremlins 2 has gone from misunderstood oddity to beloved cult comedy, and how Dante basically used a studio sequel to make fun of studio sequels. Now, personally? I've always felt the Gremlins films could stand to be a little more topical. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a tiny green monster hijacking a cable access show as much as the next person, but where are the gremlins discussing modern infrastructure concerns? Where's the scene where a gremlin spreads misinformation online? Why hasn't there been a thoughtful subplot about housing costs? You're telling me these creatures can genetically splice themselves into bat-gremlins and electricity-gremlins, but none of them has started an inflammatory podcast?Honestly, the closest Gremlins 2 gets is making fun of media saturation and corporate culture, which, credit where it's due, was pretty ahead of its time. But I'm just saying: if you're gonna unleash chaos monsters onto society, maybe let them tackle gig economy burnout or algorithm-driven outrage while they're at it. Imagine a gremlin testifying before Congress. That's cinema.Still, Clay and Amanda make a compelling case that Gremlins 2 works precisely because it's so unhinged. It's satire wrapped in slapstick wrapped in creature effects slime, and somehow it all holds together. So tune in, enjoy the madness, and remember: somewhere out there, there's probably already a cryptocurrency gremlin. And be sure to head over to Patreon.com/thepenskyfile to follow Clay and Amanda as they dive into horror franchise sequels, and don't miss out on the special Patreon-only episode recorded at the Stanley Hotel in June!

Bart Mixon was Born in Houston, Texas, Mixon began his special make-up effects career working on local independent productions, including the 1984 thriller Courage, starring, co-written and produced by Ronny Cox. He eventually became a make-up lab technician and on-set makeup artist on more high profile productions, including A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985), The Supernaturals (1986) and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986). Perhaps more notably, he worked on The Terminator (1984) and was part of the "Robot Team" on RoboCop (1987). In 1987, Mixon moved to Los Angeles, California, where he supervised special make-up and creature effects for such projects as Fright Night Part 2 (1988), Pet Sematary (1989), Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990), Predator 2 (1990) and Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1992). He was also the creature effects supervisor on Stephen King's It (1990); as such, he was responsible for designing, sculpting and applying the make-up for the Pennywise character.  After working on the Klownzilla hands on Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988), Bart worked with the Chiodo Bros. once again as the Shop Foreman during the production of Ernest Scared Stupid (1991) where he supervised the creation of the trolls! He returned to do makeup FX work on Pet Sematary Two (1992). In 1994, Mixon entered into a partnership with fellow Star Trek make-up artist Earl Ellis to create the make-up effects studio Mixon & Ellis FX (or ME FX). Over the next four years, the studio created make-up and prosthetics for such films as Fargo (1996), Men in Black (1997) and Rushmore (1998). Mixon closed down the studio in 1998 and has since worked as a freelance artist on films such as How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000), Planet of the Apes (2001), Men in Black II (2002), The Ring (2002), Hellboy (2004) and Collateral (2004).  Mixon also was the prosthetic make-up artist for The Thing on Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007). He was also a key prosthetic artist on X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) and was a make-up artist on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006). In addition, he worked on the Academy Award-nominated prosthetic make-up for Norbit (2007). When the Sequel Gets it Right

Video Store Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 19, 2026 24:46

This week on the Video Store Podcast I am recommending four sequels that understood what they were doing. Not every follow up needs to top the original. Sometimes the smarter move is to change perspective, lean into experience, or admit that the audience already knows the rules. These films take different approaches, but all of them show intent rather than obligation.Bride of Frankenstein (1935)James Whale treats the sequel as a chance to reshape the story rather than extend it. The film is openly stylized, emotionally direct, and comfortable mixing humor with unease. Elsa Lanchester appearing as both Mary Shelley and the Bride signals how self aware the film is from the start. At just over an hour it wastes nothing, and every choice feels deliberate. Universal horror rarely let directors put this much personality on screen, which makes it stand out even now.Psycho II (1983)Instead of chasing shock, this film focuses on Norman Bates after years of confinement. Anthony Perkins plays him with restraint and patience, letting the tension come from uncertainty rather than spectacle. The movie also knows the audience brings baggage with them, and it uses that knowledge carefully. Released at a time when many horror sequels went broader, this one went inward. The Color of Money (1986)Paul Newman returns to Fast Eddie Felson as someone shaped by time and compromise. Martin Scorsese treats The Hustler as history, not a template to be copied. The film is about pride, mentorship, and what it means to keep competing when winning is no longer simple. Newman earned his Oscar here, and it feels tied to the character's accumulated weight rather than a single performance beat.Gremlins 2 The New Batch (1990)Joe Dante uses the sequel to tear the whole idea apart. The film is packed with effects, jokes, and commentary, and it never pauses to justify itself. It openly mocks sequels, corporate culture, and even the audience's expectations. The commitment is total, and that confidence is why it works. These four films do not share a tone, a genre, or a strategy. What they share is clarity. Each one knows why it exists and what it wants to explore next. That is what makes them worth renting again, not as curiosities, but as examples of sequels that made real successful choices. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! In 1984, producer Steven Spielberg, writer Chris Columbus, and director Joe Dante brought a new breed of cuddly creatures to the big screen, hoping to draw in fans of other odd critters like Yoda and E.T. The star of this film is the adorable "mogwai" (Chinese for "devil") named Gizmo, who propagates some very odd offspring that terrorize a small town on Christmas Eve. Released the same weekend as Ghostbusters, this horror-comedy was a hit with audiences, earning $212 million on an $11 million budget. The flick spawned a 1990 sequel, subtitled The New Batch, and a TV series, with a forthcoming third film, Secrets of the Mogwai, in the works. On the merchandising side, the Gizmo plush became an instant hit as one of the top toys of Christmas '84. And, of course, there were plenty of knock-offs, from Critters, to Munchies, to Ghoulies. Perhaps most notably, the film's violence and gore, packaged in family-friendly wrapping paper, led to the creation of a new MPAA rating category: PG-13. But forty-one years later, are we still going gaga for Gremlins? Or have these vicious vermin overstayed their welcome like unruly in-laws at the holidays?   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com    You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. This week we're exploring the often forgotten genre that is “Horror Movies for Children”. It was a short lived genre, and almost entirely killed by the advent of the PG-13 rating, but this week we dive into Gremlins (1984) and its wacky sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990). Gremlins is certainly responsible for traumatizing a generation of 80's children whose parents thought it was a silly movie about a little furry animal. Enjoy our review of the Gremlins franchise!   Cinema Spectator is a movie podcast hosted by Isaac Ransom, Juzo Greenwood, and Cameron Tuttle.
