In 1984, producer Steven Spielberg, writer Chris Columbus, and director Joe Dante brought a new breed of cuddly creatures to the big screen, hoping to draw in fans of other odd critters like Yoda and E.T. The star of this film is the adorable "mogwai" (Chinese for "devil") named Gizmo, who propagates some very odd offspring that terrorize a small town on Christmas Eve. Released the same weekend as Ghostbusters, this horror-comedy was a hit with audiences, earning $212 million on an $11 million budget. The flick spawned a 1990 sequel, subtitled The New Batch, and a TV series, with a forthcoming third film, Secrets of the Mogwai, in the works. On the merchandising side, the Gizmo plush became an instant hit as one of the top toys of Christmas '84. And, of course, there were plenty of knock-offs, from Critters, to Munchies, to Ghoulies. Perhaps most notably, the film's violence and gore, packaged in family-friendly wrapping paper, led to the creation of a new MPAA rating category: PG-13. But forty-one years later, are we still going gaga for Gremlins? Or have these vicious vermin overstayed their welcome like unruly in-laws at the holidays? This week we're exploring the often forgotten genre that is “Horror Movies for Children”. It was a short lived genre, and almost entirely killed by the advent of the PG-13 rating, but this week we dive into Gremlins (1984) and its wacky sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990). Gremlins is certainly responsible for traumatizing a generation of 80's children whose parents thought it was a silly movie about a little furry animal. Enjoy our review of the Gremlins franchise! Cinema Spectator is a movie podcast hosted by Isaac Ransom, Juzo Greenwood, and Cameron Tuttle. The show is executive produced by Darrin O'Neill and recorded & produced in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA. You can support the show at patreon.com/ecfsproductions.

After the huge success of the original Gremlins, Warner Bros quickly wanted a sequel. The people who'd actually made Gremlins, not least director Joe Dante? The thought of making another was not in the slightest big appealing. Until, many years later, the studio made Dante an offer: if you make Gremlins 2, you can do pretty much whatever you want with it. This is the story of how the ensuing film became one of the most boldest blockbuster sequels of all time. Later in the same decade, Christopher Guest took a small company of actors down to Texas for a month. On a modest budget, he shot over 50 hours of footage, that'd take over a year to edit into a feature film. Even when the resultant movie, Waiting For Guffman, was finished, it took a long time to earn its reputation as a modern comedy classic... Stories of both films are told in this episode. With its Trumpian billionaire presiding over a steamrolling everything-company, Joe Dante's GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH (1990) satirized the 1980s while also predicting the present day. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. This is our patrons' pick episode, where we tackle a couple of inferior sequels to excellent films.
What better way to start off the new year than with chaos only rivaled by that of the real world? Gremlins 2: The New Batch is one of the most anarchist sequels to ever exist, and Max, Liz, and Host Spencer try to parse through this movie with enough decorum to make Brainy Gremlin proud. As is the running joke in this episode, THIS. MOVIE. HAS. EVERYTHING: A 24 hour yogurt shop, Science Twins, Gomez Addams trying to fix a water fountain, a vegetable gremlin, and an opening sequence literally taken from Superman IV... and that is not even 10% of the zaniness.
We wrap up 2, count 'em 2 Gremlins films. Favorite Gremlin? Favorite Kill? What else could you really do with this franchise after pushing the boundaries with "The New Batch"?
Happy New Year! Enjoy additional Gremlins. Find Here Come the Sequels on Spotify and Apple Podcasts; we're also online at herecomethesequels.blogspot.com, available through email at herecomethesequels@gmail.com, on Bluesky under Here Come the Sequels, and on ... X? @HCTSequels.

On October 20, 2024, attorney Anthony Buzbee filed multiple lawsuits against Sean "Diddy" Combs, representing over 100 individuals alleging sexual assault, exploitation, and abuse. The plaintiffs, ranging from minors to adults, claim that Combs and his associates engaged in misconduct spanning several decades. Notably, one lawsuit involves a 13-year-old who alleges that Combs assaulted her at an afterparty following the MTV Video Music Awards in September 2000.These legal actions are part of a series of accusations against Combs, including claims of drug-facilitated assaults and coercion. Buzbee's firm has received thousands of calls from potential victims, with over 120 individuals currently represented. The lawsuits aim to hold Combs accountable for his alleged actions and seek justice for the victims. Combs has denied all allegations, with his legal team expressing confidence in his defense and the judicial process, however the tsunami of allegations doesn't seem to be letting up any time soon.(commercial at 8:16)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Diddy accused of raping seven more victims, including 13-year-old girl who was drugged, in new lawsuits after 120 people came forward | Daily Mail Online
