Modern humans are living in an environment radically different from the one our biology evolved to operate within. In this conversation, we explore how light, mitochondria, evolution, and physics shape aging, disease, mental health, and longevity. This episode reframes health not as a matter of isolated interventions, but as the consequence of whether we remain inside—or drift outside—the human biological envelope.Dr Alistair Nunn is the Director of Science of The Guy Foundation Family Trust and Visiting Professor in Theoretical Quantum Biology & Bioenergetics Research Centre for Optimal Health at the University of Westminster, London, UK. "Sincerely held religious belief" is now a common phrase in discussions of American religious freedom, from opinions handed down by the US Supreme Court to local controversies. The "sincerity test" of religious belief has become a cornerstone of US jurisprudence, framing what counts as legitimate grounds for First Amendment claims in the eyes of the law. In Sincerely Held: American Secularism and Its Believers (U Chicago Press, 2022), Charles McCrary provides an original account of how sincerely held religious belief became the primary standard for determining what legally counts as authentic religion. McCrary skillfully traces the interlocking histories of American sincerity, religion, and secularism starting in the mid-nineteenth century. He analyzes a diverse archive, including Herman Melville's novel The Confidence-Man, vice-suppressing police, Spiritualist women accused of being fortune-tellers, eclectic conscientious objectors, secularization theorists, Black revolutionaries, and anti-LGBTQ litigants. Across this history, McCrary reveals how sincerity and sincerely held religious belief developed as technologies of secular governance, determining what does and doesn't entitle a person to receive protections from the state. This fresh analysis of secularism in the United States invites further reflection on the role of sincerity in public life and religious studies scholarship, asking why sincerity has come to matter so much in a supposedly "post-truth" era. Dr. Charles McCrary is a scholar of American religion, focusing on secularism, religious freedom, race, and science. His work has been published in academic journals including the Journal of the American Academy of Religion, Religion & American Culture, and Religion. He also has written for popular outlets such as Religion & Politics, The Revealer, and The New Republic, many of which are linked in the show notes of this episode. Before coming to ASU, he was a postdoctoral research associate at the John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics at Washington University in St. Louis. Watch as a full video interview on YouTubeScreenwriter and editor James Alistair Henry first started writing while working as a bookseller. He joined the writing team for Channel 4's Smack the Pony and went on to write the BAFTA-award winning Green Wing, ITV comedy Delivery Man and cult hit Campus as well as episodes for smash-hit children's television shows Bob The Builder and Hey Duggee. His Radio 4 sketch show, Wosson Cornwall, was selected as BBC Radio Comedy of the Week and his newest sitcom, Piglets, has been commissioned for a second series. His debut novel, Pagans, was an instant Times bestseller, and has been optioned for TV.We had a really fun and interesting chat with James, hearing about how he first got into the world of screenwriting (including some great anecdotes) and why he decided to write Pagans as a novel. We talk about how TV writing and novel writing differs, and have a chat about how structure is so important, and how once it is in place, then you can go wild with your ideas and characters.Links:Buy Pagans nowFollow James on BlueskySupport us on Patreon and get great benefits!: https://www.patreon.com/ukpageonePage One - The Writer's Podcast is brought to you by Write Gear, creators of Page One - the Writer's Notebook. Alistair reveals how subject matter experts (SMEs) can unlock influence without abandoning their technical edge through what he calls "expert ship"—a set of enterprise skills that translate expertise into clear business value. The conversation challenges the assumption that management is the only path forward for technical professionals and offers practical frameworks for founders looking to retain and grow top technical talent.Key Takeaways[5:00] - The leadership development gap: Only 11% of first-time leaders receive training in their first year, leaving 89% to sink or swim[7:50] - Why "knowledge leader" failed: Technical experts don't want to be leaders—they want to avoid "useless meetings where nothing gets done"[12:00] - The invisibility problem: Much of experts' work (like keeping email systems running) is completely invisible until something breaks[14:30] - Expert as coach: The most transformational skill is learning to ask better questions before providing technical advice[19:30] - The coaching paradox: Half of stakeholders love the questioning approach; the other half just want immediate answers[23:00] - The negativity trap: Experts often spend 22 minutes explaining why something is difficult before mentioning it's actually a good idea[29:00] - The promotion trap: Three out of four times, forcing technical experts into management roles is "a train wreck"[40:30] - The remuneration shift: In successful tech companies, technical experts often earn more than leaders because they add more valueTweetable Quotes
