Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay head out on town to get messed up and cause havoc as they wrap up XXXmas by discussing one of the great modern Christmas comedies, 'The Night Before.' Andy starts it off by unwrapping a story about the time he did shrooms at a church with friends in his youth, and how the evening quickly unraveled. Then the fellas dive right into a movie they believe should be on the pantheon of Xmas movies. It wastes zero time getting to the debauchery, and much like Andy in real life, Seth Rogen's Isaac overshoots the mark with his narcotics use very early one. After encountering a talking nativity scene, and meeting a demonic baby, he ends up deciding to level out by taking even more drugs. Around that time, Anthony Mackie's Chris has one of the grimiest, and most memorable sex scenes. The hilarity and cameos continue as a sex-crazed James Franco, and his dong, make an appearance, but the MVP of the whole affair has to be Michael Shannon's celestial Mr. Green. Mirroring this episode, there's stories of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, with listeners who make it to the end earning their wings.
There are calls for more bus shelters in West Clare. Alan Morrissey spoke with the Quilty Fianna Fáil councillor, Michael Shannon about calls for the erection of more bus shelters in the west of the county. A spokesperson for Clare County Council said: “West Clare Municipal District has recently met TFI Local Link and discussed the provision of additional bus stop shelters and bus stop poles in West Clare. The provision of a bus stop shelter could be accommodated by the Section 38 process, but as was evidenced by the discontinued low-cost safety scheme in Kilmihil last year, buy-in from residents is also important. In addition, please note that West Clare Municipal District and Clare County Council's Road Design Section are continuing to work with TFI Local Link on progressing locations for poles and shelters throughout the Kilrush Local Electoral Area. Further progress on agreeing a programme of works on this is expected early in 2026.” Image (c) Pixabay
Michael Shannon understands he's associated with some intense, menacing characters he's played, like Agent Nelson Van Alden in ‘Boardwalk Empire.' “I'm a big fella, and I got this giant head, and it's not too difficult for me to seem intimidating I suppose, but it couldn't be further from what I'm actually like,” he tells Dave Davies. In two new projects, though, Shannon plays good guys. He's President James Garfield in the new series ‘Death by Lightning' and he's a prosecutor trying Nazi leaders for war crimes in the new film ‘Nuremberg.'Also, we hear from Rhea Seehorn, star of Apple TV's ‘Pluribus.' This week on Myopia Movies, we learn how the world became entranced with Henry Cavill and started to fall out with Zack Snyder. We watched Man of Steel home to the world's most vindictive Pa Kent and the one where Superman kills thousands in his final fight. Happy Thanksgiving from us at Myopia and safe shopping and travels today! How will Man of Steel hold up? Host: Nic Panel: Keiko, Matthew, Nur, Alex Directed by Zack Snyder Starring Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane, Russell Crowe, Antje Traue, Harry Lennix, Richard Schiff, Christopher Meloni, Kevin Costner, Ayelet Zurer, Laurence Fishburne
Russell Crowe shines in Nuremberg as Hermann Göring, who became the face of the Nazi Party following Hitler's suicide and the end of the war, as he's held in custody and probed by a psychiatrist as the titular trials approach. Indeed, while a mediocre film, its actors' performances are a pleasure - with the exception of Rami Malek, whose psychiatrist is twitchy, busy, and a failure. A shame that he's the protagonist, then. We discuss the film's structure and screenplay: José contends that Malek's character is not just badly played but an irrelevance, and the drama would be much better served by focusing on Michael Shannon's prosecutor; Mike criticises what he claims is a stupid person's idea of clever writing. And there's more to think about: how Nuremberg compares to Bridge of Spies, which similarly depicted a novel trial that had obvious implications beyond the courtroom, and Judgment at Nuremberg, the other major dramatisation of the trials; the film's tone, which is able to handle moments of humour but sometimes veers into the overly glib and kitsch; the present-day rise of fascism and the genocide in Gaza to which the film speaks; the use of real footage of Holocaust victims and the purpose to which it's put; and whether we think that its critique of the Catholic Church for its support of the Nazis, and suggestion that dropping the atomic bomb on Japan was an unjustifiable atrocity, are surprising and bold things for a mainstream American film to do... or not particularly impressive, and shouldn't people just know this stuff anyway? Recorded on 23rd November 2025.

This week's episode of the Empire Podcast would surely deserve to get a full fat five points from Greg Davies, the Taskmaster himself, as Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and John Nugent apply themselves wholeheartedly (some more wholeheartedly than others, it must be said) to deciding which Taskmaster contestant has appeared in the best film. Then, the podteam take a look at the week's movie news and, in a bumper reviews section, cast their eyes over Edgar Wright's The Running Man, Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, Ruben Fleischer's Now You See Me: Now You Don't, Julia Ducournau's Alpha, Gurinder Chadha's Christmas Karma, and James Vanderbilt's Nuremberg. Three of those movies provide this week's guests, as Edgar Wright drops by the podbooth to natter with Chris about The Running Man, and meeting Stephen King; [21:43 - 33:05 approx] Now You Three Me's Isla Fisher and Rosamund Pike talk magic and manky accents, again with Chris; [56:16 - 1:09:05 approx] and Michael Shannon talks Nuremberg and (mostly) R.E.M., also with Chris. [1:42:53 - 1:55:38 approx] Oh, and there's a huge revelation about the pod itself lurking within there somewhere. Forget what you think you know... and enjoy.

We're covering Death by Lightning, Netflix's four-episode retelling of President James Garfield's assassination. Michael Shannon and Matthew Macfadyen tackle Garfield and the man hanged for killing him, Charles Guiteau. The series mixes political drama, medical tragedy, and historical recreation. Having read Destiny of the Republic, we hold the show to account: what it gets right, what it condenses, and what it flat-out invents. We break down the highlights (the 36-ballot convention, sharp lines lifted from the book, strong supporting turns from Bradley Whitford and Shea Whigham, and a well-staged shooting), along with the choices that miss the mark (compressed science, softened villains, and history buff head-scratchers). Tune in, and welcome to Today's Episode!
Historian Candice Millard, author of Destiny of the Republic, discusses what it's like to have your book turned into a major Netflix Miniseries, Death by Lightning, and what first attracted her to the story of President James Garfield and the assassin Charles Guiteau. Support the show

Douglas Kelley (Rami Malek), the officer tasked with creating psychological profiles of high-ranking Nazi officers in the wake of the Second World War. Through their conversations, Goring displays such charisma and cunning that gives Kelley surprising emotional pause, causing him to question how ordinary men can be guilty of extraordinary evil. In this 1on1, we speak to Vanderbilt and the film's star Michael Shannon about the lines of good vs. evil.NUREMBERG is in theatres now.

The basis of the celebrated Paramount Network miniseries starring Michael Shannon and Taylor Kitsch -- Waco is the critically-acclaimed, first person account of the siege by Branch Davidian survivor, David Thibodeau.Twenty-five years ago, the FBI staged a deadly raid on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco. Texas. David Thibodeau survived to tell the story. When he first met the man who called himself David Koresh, David Thibodeau was a drummer in a local a rock band. Though he had never been religious in the slightest, Thibodeau gradually became a follower and moved to the Branch Davidian compound in Waco. He remained there until April 19, 1993, when the compound was stormed and burned to the ground after a 51-day standoff with government authorities. In this compelling account -- now with an updated epilogue that revisits remaining survivors--Thibodeau explores why so many people came to believe that Koresh was divinely inspired. We meet the men, women, and children of Mt. Carmel. We get inside the day-to-day life of the community. We also understand Thibodeau's brutally honest assessment of the United States government's actions. The result is a memoir that reads like a thriller, with each page taking us closer to the eventual inferno.https://amzn.to/42UuycPBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
