Have you ever noticed how sea creatures like mussels, oysters and barnacles, refuse to budge even on wet, stormy coastlines? Apparently it’s because they make their own glue and cement which is incredibly effective! Jonathan Wilker and his team at the Wilker Lab are studying how nature makes these materials and is translating that information into glues and adhesives we can use for ourselves. And the impact of new adhesives might be more meaningful than you think... Adhesives are found everywhere! They’re in makeup, plywood and furniture, all over the interior of your car, and they even have potential for biomedical uses! Jonathan is working not only find adhesives that work better, but to create non-toxic alternatives and even adhesives that work underwater! This episode surprised me with how interesting Jonathan’s research is and how exciting the potential impact is for all of us. Give it a listen and I’m sure you’ll feel the same!
What if we could harness the sticking powers of sea creatures like mussels, oysters and barnacles, which refuse to budge even on wet, stormy coastlines? Dive into the wonderful world of animals that make their own glue and cement with scientist Jonathan Wilker -- and preview some of the amazing things we can learn from how they do it.
