Can you imagine an epic battle like this: the Meg vs Kraken?! The scariest shark ever vs the legendary sea monster... Who would win? Maybe the Meg's sharp teeth would cut the huge monster lto strips of calamari... or Kraken would easily catch the shark with its huge tentacles? That would be a battle to remember! For sure... We know so little about all those creatures living in the ocean... what are they - swimming deep in the ocean right under our rented vacation boat? Some of them are really scary or unexpectedly huge in size... For example, did you know that a jellyfish can reach up to 6.5 feet (200 cm). And it's a jellyfish! Instead of thinking of the ocean as a silent body of water, a new book demonstrates how important sound is in the lives of sea creatures. Author and science writer Amorina Kingdon joins us to discuss, Sing Like Fish: How Sound Rules Life Under Water. This segment is guest-hosted by Kousha Navidar
Did you know that the Meg wasn't the largest creature living deep in the ocean? Actually, the largest ocean creature is... a jellyfish! Yup! It's not that little one you're used to thinking of: being about the size of a dinner plate. Lion's Mane Jellyfish has a bell of about 2.3 meters in diameter and its tentacles can reach about 36.5 meters in length. And bluebottle jellyfish can reach up to 165 meters in length. It is the world's longest creature made up of colonies of separate organisms. Super long tentacles are also highly venomous. Apart from the largest creatures, the ocean is also full of different organisms. Little but dangerous crabs, turtles, venomous sea snakes, goblin sharks. Who else lives in the ocean depth and is the Meg the scariest monster out there? Very few of us decide to dive into the depth of the ocean and explore, what's going on there. What we can tell for sure is that it's a place full pretty scary inhabitants we know very few about. The ocean is deep: the average depth of the entire ocean is about 3.5 km. and its deepest point is the Mariana Trench, which hides a lot of murky secrets. One of the questions is: is the Meg the most terrifying creature ever living in the ocean or it has competition? The size isn't always the decisive factor when it comes to danger, even though the Meg was pretty impressive in size. It could reach up to 82 ft. in length. However, some tiny inhabitants of the ocean can be terrifying as well. Take the blue-ringed octopus, for instance. It might be small, but this thing is no joke. It has a dangerous venom and an antidote to its sting still hasn't been found. What's big, scaly, and eats more than your Dad at a discount buffet?
Sharks are somewhat notorious for their sense of smell and ability to sniff out prey deep in the ocean. There's that persistent myth that sharks can smell a drop of human blood from a mile away. But that's not exactly true. While sharks can smell human blood, they are more interested in sniffing out what's for dinner: other fish, crustaceans, and molluscs. Ocean currents also play a role in how far a scent can travel. However, shark noses are just as powerful as any other fish in the sea. SciFri producer Kathleen Davis talks with Dr. Lauren Simonitis, a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellow in biology at University of Washington and Florida Atlantic University, about her shark nose research, and what questions remain about shark snoots.Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Wildlife never ceases to astonish us with its diversity. You've probably never even heard of many of the creatures living on our planet, while their appearance will make your eyebrows go all the way up. "The deeper you go, the creepier they get." You're about to travel to the darkest ocean depths and check whether this claim is true. We decided to create our own little "zoo" with rare and unusual sea critters. Are the creatures living there as scary as people think? Well, let's see. At a depth of 3,200 ft, you can meet the cookiecutter shark. This creature is a parasite. It attaches itself to big fishes, dolphins, whales, and sometimes even people. Then, using its neatly arranged serrated teeth, it gouges out cookie-sized pieces of meat. At a depth of 4,000 ft, you see something droopy and saggy. The blobfish doesn't have a skeleton or any muscle. Its jelly-like flesh lets the creature survive incredible water pressure. But despite its appearance, the blobfish is an ambush predator. Interested? Here are the most amazing sea creatures found deep within the ocean. #brightside Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: / brightside Instagram: / brightgram 5-Minute Crafts Youtube: https://www.goo.gl/8JVmuC Stock materials (photos, footages and other): https://www.depositphotos.com https://www.shutterstock.com https://www.eastnews.ru ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.brightside.me/ Learn more about your ad choices. Today we talk about the classic Bobby Darin song and the original song which it was based on. We also talk about his life and career generally. In etymology, we discuss the origin of various aquatic animals' names, including whales, dolphins, and cuttlefish . . . We also talk generally about the relationship between naming and observation. We talked about water animals, so for Eurovision we talked about Waterloo, the hit song by Abba that won Eurovision in 1974 and really changed the game.
