Imagine this – sea animals taking to the skies like they own the place! It'd be like a whole new world up there. Picture dolphins doing somersaults through the clouds and whales breaching above the waves. And don't even get me started on flying squids – talk about an aerial acrobatics show! But hey, it's not all fun and games – flying sharks might give you second thoughts about hitting the beach. Still, gotta admit, seeing our underwater buddies spread their wings would be pretty darn cool!

Millions of years ago, many large, strange-looking sea creatures lived in what is now the South Atlantic Ocean. A museum in Washington, D.C., is giving visitors a chance to learn about these ancient animals.数百万年前，许多大型，奇怪的海洋生物都生活在现在的南大西洋。 华盛顿特区的一家博物馆为游客提供了了解这些古老动物的机会。Scientists say the continents of South America and Africa separated millions of years ago. Dr. Joseph Ryan is an Assistant Professor of Biology at the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience at the University of Florida. Joe studies DNA from squishy marine invertebrates like ctenophores (e.g. comb jellies), cnidarians (e.g. jellyfish), tunicates (e.g. sea squirts), and sea cucumbers. His goal is to understand how different types of animals are related, how animals adapt to extreme environments, and how animals have evolved the extraordinary diversity we see today. When he's not at work, Joe loves spending time with his family. He and his two kids enjoy dancing to “Tiny Bubbles” by Don Ho and songs by the band The Clash. Joe is also a fan of singer-songwriter Slim Whitman, and he plays guitar, drums, and keyboard. Joe received his PhD in bioinformatics from Boston University. Afterwards, he was awarded a research fellowship at the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health and subsequently worked as a postdoctoral scholar at Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology in Bergern, Norway. In our interview Joe shares more about his life and science.

Instead of thinking of the ocean as a silent body of water, a new book demonstrates how important sound is in the lives of sea creatures. Author and science writer Amorina Kingdon joins us to discuss, Sing Like Fish: How Sound Rules Life Under Water.This segment is guest-hosted by Kousha Navidar

Did you know that the Meg wasn't the largest creature living deep in the ocean? Actually, the largest ocean creature is... a jellyfish! Yup! It's not that little one you're used to thinking of: being about the size of a dinner plate. Lion's Mane Jellyfish has a bell of about 2.3 meters in diameter and its tentacles can reach about 36.5 meters in length. And bluebottle jellyfish can reach up to 165 meters in length. It is the world's longest creature made up of colonies of separate organisms. Super long tentacles are also highly venomous. Apart from the largest creatures, the ocean is also full of different organisms. Little but dangerous crabs, turtles, venomous sea snakes, goblin sharks. Who else lives in the ocean depth and is the Meg the scariest monster out there? Very few of us decide to dive into the depth of the ocean and explore, what's going on there. What we can tell for sure is that it's a place full pretty scary inhabitants we know very few about. The ocean is deep: the average depth of the entire ocean is about 3.5 km. and its deepest point is the Mariana Trench, which hides a lot of murky secrets.  One of the questions is: is the Meg the most terrifying creature ever living in the ocean or it has competition? The size isn't always the decisive factor when it comes to danger, even though the Meg was pretty impressive in size. It could reach up to 82 ft. in length. However, some tiny inhabitants of the ocean can be terrifying as well. Take the blue-ringed octopus, for instance. It might be small, but this thing is no joke. It has a dangerous venom and an antidote to its sting still hasn't been found. Sharks are somewhat notorious for their sense of smell and ability to sniff out prey deep in the ocean. There's that persistent myth that sharks can smell a drop of human blood from a mile away. But that's not exactly true. While sharks can smell human blood, they are more interested in sniffing out what's for dinner: other fish, crustaceans, and molluscs. Ocean currents also play a role in how far a scent can travel.
