As you prepare for your next seaside adventure, be aware of the sea creatures that could potentially disrupt your beach trip. One notable example is the vampire fish, a fascinating yet formidable species that has been in existence for an astonishing 470 million years. These ancient fish can be quite intimidating with their parasitic habits. Additionally, jellyfish are a common threat; their stings can cause significant discomfort and even serious health issues. On the shores of the ocean, Laura and Daphne fantasise that they are mother and daughter. They both have problems in their past, which they need to resolve.

You're woken up by a strange sound. It's a knock on the window. But you live on the 12th floor – who, or what could be knocking? The knocking is getting stronger. You go to the window, reach for the curtain, and abruptly pull it aside... What you see is fantastic. There are flying (or floating) small fish outside your window. 1000s of them! A shoal of sardines rising directly to the sky. A few knock on your window as they pass. There are so many sardines, you can't see what's going on outside. But as the last fish flies by, the full picture opens before you. Large and small fish fly between the houses. Octopuses cut through the air with their tentacles into a rain cloud. A huge whale is slowly drifting toward the horizon. Above the roof of a nearby house, two sharks chase four sea lions. A neighbor waves to you. He holds a fishing rod from the window and waits for the fish to bite. A school--no, a flock--of dolphins flies past your window. They cheerfully whistle, as if they are greeting you. What's going on? Sea creatures of the Earth have learned to fly, leaving the ocean and filling the air! Yup, it's one of those crazy what-if scenarios you like so much! Imagine this – sea animals taking to the skies like they own the place! It'd be like a whole new world up there. Picture dolphins doing somersaults through the clouds and whales breaching above the waves. And don't even get me started on flying squids – talk about an aerial acrobatics show! But hey, it's not all fun and games – flying sharks might give you second thoughts about hitting the beach. Still, gotta admit, seeing our underwater buddies spread their wings would be pretty darn cool!

Dr. Joseph Ryan is an Assistant Professor of Biology at the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience at the University of Florida. Joe studies DNA from squishy marine invertebrates like ctenophores (e.g. comb jellies), cnidarians (e.g. jellyfish), tunicates (e.g. sea squirts), and sea cucumbers. His goal is to understand how different types of animals are related, how animals adapt to extreme environments, and how animals have evolved the extraordinary diversity we see today. When he's not at work, Joe loves spending time with his family. He and his two kids enjoy dancing to “Tiny Bubbles” by Don Ho and songs by the band The Clash. Joe is also a fan of singer-songwriter Slim Whitman, and he plays guitar, drums, and keyboard. Joe received his PhD in bioinformatics from Boston University. Afterwards, he was awarded a research fellowship at the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health and subsequently worked as a postdoctoral scholar at Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology in Bergern, Norway. In our interview Joe shares more about his life and science.
