In Episode 03 of The Great Women Artists Podcast, Katy Hessel interviews one of the most exciting and brilliant photographers working today, JUNO CALYPSO!!! Known for her self portraits where she stages herself as a fictional character named ‘Joyce’ in the likes of Honeymoon Hotels in America, 70s style flats in Malta, or more recently in a kitsch underground bunker on the outskirts of Vegas, Juno’s work is always very distinctly pink and elaborate, with a lot of dark undertones. After graduating from London College of Communications in 2012, Juno has since gone on to win multiple awards for her work, including the British Journal of Photography and the Royal Photographic Society, and has had six solo exhibitions across London and Milan. In this episode we discuss Juno's career so far, how she became interested in self portraiture experimenting with digital cameras in the late 90s and early 00s; her experience at university; incredible recent photographic projects, The Honeymoon and What To Do With A Million Years; her constant and refreshing examination of female self-perception; and how she's catapulted into being one of the most recognisable and exciting photographers working today. I couldn't be more delighted to have Juno as my third guest. Not only is she amazing AND hilarious, but her unnerving stories of finding the most kitsch and insanely incredible locations (you won't believe are real) are just fantastic. She has A LOT of good stories. ENJOY!!! It is not contentious to connect costume and the catwalk: Alexander McQueen did in 1997 with his ‘It’s A Jungle Out There’ collection. However, few designers and fashion houses are as willing – or as brave? – to compare their collections with the dressing up box. In today’s fashion industry ‘Fancy Dress’ remains a dirty term. Why is this? Discussing recent commentary that considers ‘ugly’, ‘critical’ and ‘experimental’ fashions, alongside the presentation of fashion in photographers’ work – from Tim Walker to Juno Calypso – this episode considers why the prevalence and popularity of fancy dress creates opportunities, and dilemmas, for some of fashion industries biggest brands. In 2015, Juno Calypso travelled with a suitcase full of wigs, masks & lingerie to a lovers-only resort in the middle of Pennsylvania. Spending a week on her own, she created a striking but surreal photo-series called “The Honeymoon”, which would earn her the The British Journal of Photography International Award that same year. Join Juno and George as they discuss the formative experiences that inspired her photos, spending 3 days in a Nuclear bunker in Vegas and everything in between.
In this weeks episode hosts Jemma and Katie talk Bunkers & Immortality! We chat about Juno Calypso, a Las Vegas 60s bunker, living forever, Cryogenics, Katie's weird childhood groups, and a strange girl listeners story.
Juno Calypso is a 2012 graduate of the BA Photography degree course at London College of Communication, where her degree show was awarded both the Hotshoe Portfolio Award and the Michael Wilson Photographic Prize. In 2013 The Independent noted Juno Calypso as the ‘One To Watch’, as have numerous other publications since. The Catlin Art Guide featured Juno as one of 40 of the most promising new artists in the UK, subsequently shortlisting her for the 2013 Catlin Art Prize, where she won the Visitor Vote Prize. In 2015 she also won the BJP International Photography Award. Her work is featured in the current issue of Foam magazine as one of 24 young artists shaping the future of photography. Juno has exhibited internationally with group shows in London, Miami and New York, and her work has been featured in The Sunday Times Magazine, Wonderland, Dazed & Confused, and The Huffington Post amongst many others. Let me, by way of an intro, read a brief artists statement by Juno: “I recently began working with self-portraiture, which led to the creation of a character named Joyce. Within elaborately staged large format photographs I draw upon personal experience to perform critical studies into modern rituals of beauty and seduction. Objects once perceived as radical, innovative, fun and nutritious – an electronic anti-wrinkle mask, computer equipment from the 1980s, baby oil, a tin of cold meat – have become joyless and oppressive. Joyce appears alone, consumed by artifice. Her glazed appearance acting as a mirror to the exhaustion felt whilst bearing the dead weight of constructed femininity.” So here to shed some light on and expand upon all that, is Juno.
