A eulogistic weepfest? A “valediction forbidding mourning”? A conscious unthroupling? All of the above?Believe it or not, the time has come for Steve, Dana, and Julia to convene the Culture Gabfest panel for the very last time. Before saying goodbye, they look back at the very first piece of culture they ever gabbed about on their inaugural episode in February 2008: the film Juno. Does the indie darling written by Diablo Cody, directed by Jason Reitman, and starring Elliot Page as a sardonic, pregnant teenager hold up after 18 years? And, what does rewatching it in 2026 reveal about how culture has changed? They discuss.Next, the panel welcomes on the grand poobah of SFOPs June Thomas to counsel them through the inevitable change in one's cultural habits that comes after a big life transition. They get into why June stopped watching TV and the truly wild mix of things in her YouTube algorithm. Finally, we hear from you our dear, dear listeners. Steve, Dana, and Julia respond to some of your many beautiful emails and voice memos. In our bonus episode for Slate Plus subscribers, past Gabfest producers spill the beans on what it was like to make this show over the years. And, as always, thank you so much for being a listener.EndorsementsDana: The forthcoming book about translating ancient texts by beloved past Gabfest guest Emily Wilson, Crossing the Wine-Dark Sea: Journeys Through Ancient Literature.June: The podcast Drafting the Past hosted by Kate Carpenter about the craft of writing history.Julia: Manhattan Beach's indie bookstore Pages and On the Calculation of Volume (Book 1) by Solvej Balle (definitely the first 30 pages and maybe the whole five book series).Steve: In addition to the music of Red Garland, I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith, and the poem “The Writer” by Richard Wilbur, Sparrowbush Bakery, a tiny, rustic bakery in Livingston, New York that is only open Fridays and Saturdays and serves the best bread made from fresh stoneground flour from locally grown grains you'll ever taste.Where in the World to Find the Culture GabfestDana: Writing film reviews on Slate.com and kicking around a book idea that is still in the early stages. You can find updates and commentary on Bluesky. Steve: In the wind, to the sands... and also working on a new book about, among many other things, the 1980s.Julia: Editing L.A. Material and soon appearing weekly on L.A. Material's about-to-launch podcast L.A. World. Also, on Twitter/X, Instagram, and Bluesky.June: At her newsletter Where Are All the Emails? For the time being, listeners can also still reach the panel by emailing culturefest@slate.com. When families begin the scholarship journey, many parents assume there are only two options: Top of Form Bottom of Form Either parents take over the process completely, or they step back and let students handle everything on their own. Neither approach works very well. The most successful scholarship families usually find a healthier balance... ---------- Student Loan Rates Drop! Last Monday, one of Scholarship GPS's partner organizations, Juno, saw a significant rate drop for undergraduate loans on Juno's platform. Juno leverages collective bargaining to negotiate lower student loans. After receiving input from families, they shared feedback with their partner lenders who then lowered rates compared to previous weeks. For many people who need to borrow for college, rates may now be lower. If you've completed a rate check before, it is worthwhile to do it again. We don't know how long these rates will last, and are encouraging families to lock in a rate now. After completing a rate check, if you submit a full application and are approved, your rates are generally locked for 30 days. “Rainwater and Whiskey” and “Empty Hands” are the latest singles off Mohawk singer-songwriter Logan Staats‘ forthcoming third album. These songs further explore Staats’ vintage country, soul and blues sound that were showcased on his 2023 Juno-nominated album, A Light in The Attic. His songwriting often centers on Indigenous rights and reclaiming identity. He continues to build on his mainstream success from winning a national Canadian music competition television series in 2018. Cherokee and Muscogee singer-songwriter Kalyn Fay‘s new album, “Garden”, channels quiet, rural life in Oklahoma. Fay waited two years before releasing the album because they “wanted to give the songs time to breathe.” The songwriting on the album is both personal and confessional, drawing inspiration from their family, their Native community, and the landscapes of Oklahoma.
"I Watched CBC's Boys-Are-Falling-Behind Segment So You Don't Have To" — matching the YouTube title across platforms means search and word-of-mouth ("did you see/hear the boys-falling-behind episode") converge on one phrase instead of splitting discovery across two titles for the same episode.3. Show Notes / Episode DescriptionA CBC News segment spends twelve minutes building the case that boys are falling behind in school — dropout-rate stats, test-score gaps, a mother tearing up over swelling music — and never once names why. Gavin breaks down what the segment keeps gesturing at instead of saying outright: a school system built to produce factory labor, a "boy crisis" industry that profits from the problem staying unsolved, and a federal health strategy arriving right on schedule. In this episode:Why a 27.1% dropout rate for boys gets read as a school problem instead of an economic oneHow "boys build forts, girls keep tidy desks" became evidence in a national news storyWhy Trump's homoerotic He-Man photos and a federal "men and boys health strategy" are doing the same political workWhy the manosphere isn't the cause of the male loneliness epidemic — it's a symptom that turned out to be profitableWhat Henry Ford's factories have to do with how a gifted program decides which kids are worth investing inMentioned in this episode: Mark Fisher's Capitalist Realism, Ernest Becker's The Denial of Death, Jean Baudrillard's Simulacra and Simulation, Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Jonathan M. Metzl's Dying of Whiteness, and CBC The National's "Those We Leave Behind" report.Park Bench Ontology is a comedy and ideas show hosted by Juno-nominated comedian and Canadian Screen Award-winning writer Gavin Stephens. It takes the feeling that the world is getting weirder and tries to name it without bullshitting you. Equal parts philosophy, stand-up, and cultural diagnosis — delivered from a park bench with nowhere to be.Welcome to the Collapse.

Listen Now to 012 WTFuture Crazy enough to Actually Watch this ‘AI Slop’ 012 WTFuture — The Intelligence Age: From Hyper Local Agents to Long Distance Relationships It appears we are now leaving the information age and diving headfirst into an “intelligence age” . But what powers this transition? Chips? Beliefs? Noble Gas? And hyperlocal? WTF AL!” In this jam-packed podcast episode, the hosts geek out over Nvidia’s massive announcements at Computex, highlighting how new hardware like the Vera Rubin data centers and Jetson Thor chips are bringing agentic AI and supercomputing power right to our laptops and home robots. Soon you too will likely have loads of intelligence agents doing your bidding, should you want such powers. Having these personal AI buddies run locally instead of in the cloud not only keeps your private secrets safe from getting sold or hacked on the dark web, but it also stops the our species from burning up gigawatts of electricity just to answer our nick nack reality questions or generate click bait. The answer? Check out what Bobby has to say about new local AI buddies! Thanks to a video submission by Dr. Jabir, our crew marveled at a mysterious giant potato-shaped heavenly body eclipsing the sun, as captured by NASA’s Perseverance rover.. “What body is it,?” you might ask. Think about it for a second and you’ll likely get this one right..still, it’s amazing to see! We also debuts a video short, humorously recounting a 59,000-year-old Neanderthal root canal successfully performed with an ancient stone routing tool! Thanks to the powers given to us by our humble AI servants, we have brought this scientific research to life! Some say the ending is a little kitch, but Al likes it, and thinks you will to. Let us know, one way or the other. And was it fun for you to watch? The conversation then blasts off into the quantum realm, debating Mrs. Future’s speculative theory that particles are actually micro black holes—surprisingly an idea even the AI Grok seemingly approved of! The hosts further bend notions of reality by exploring the idea that human consciousness literally arises from quantum computations happening inside tiny carbon “microtubules” in our brain’s neurons. This quantum connection might even explain wild, Matrix-style phenomena like time dilation during life-or-death car crashes. Finally, things get delightfully mythic as the episode wraps up with Sun’s “Brief HerStory of Time,” exploring how the spring months got their names from powerful mythological figures, such as the starry Pleiades sisters bringing in May, and the fiercely accountable, peacock-wielding Roman goddess Juno reigning over June. btw, Happy June!

.Richard Hy is a lawyer who represents people harmed in large-scale incidents, from mass shootings to defective products to public health crises. In this episode, he explains the strategic differences between mass torts and class actions, and uses his work on the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting litigation to highlight how plaintiffs' lawyers think through which court, who to sue, and how to coordinate across dozens of law firms. Richard discusses the economics of contingency-fee practice, how AI is changing document-heavy work, and the secondary trauma that comes with intake after a mass-casualty event. He also reflects on how moving from insurance defense into plaintiff-side work early in his career shaped the way he approaches litigation today, giving him a clearer read on what the other side is likely to do. Richard is a graduate of Gonzaga School of Law. This week's astrology is asking for space. Space means, pause, breathe, consider, take a beat before moving from impulse into action. There's so much change moving in the collective currents and, as individuals, it's important that we give ourselves space and permission to be changed. Use this week's transits to relax your judgments and ideas, open up and get curious about “the new thing”, and bring some space between what's known and what's next. This week-ahead reading for June 1-7, 2026 is an excerpt from this week's Somatic Space class with Renee Sills. Jonathan Merel runs a mid-sized family law firm built around high-conflict divorce. In this episode, he talks about the kinds of cases his firm takes on, how he sets strategy across a team of lawyers, and what shifted when he moved from full-time litigator to running the business. He also reflects on the emotional weight of family law, why it draws certain practitioners and burns out others, and how he separates emotion from legal judgment. We also hear from Kristina Lindsay, the firm's in-house divorce coach. With a background in domestic violence advocacy, she helps clients navigate trauma, safety, and conflict, operating under the firm's attorney-client privilege. Together, they show how legal strategy and emotional support can work side by side and shape the outcome of a case. Jonathan is a graduate of Chicago-Kent College of Law.This episode is hosted by Kyle McEntee.Mentioned in this episode:Learn more about Juno and private student loansAccess LawHub today!Learn more about Juno and private student loansLearn more about Haynes Boone LLP

President Javier Milei's fiscal policies have stabilized the currency, though global factors keep inflation high. Despite economic progress, Milei's inner circle faces ongoing corruption investigations that could impact his political momentum.11/16: Evan Ellis reports on Venezuela's repressive regime, which continues to hold political prisoners despite an economic reopening. He discusses the US fuel blockade on Cuba and its humanitarian impact. Potential resolutions include naming a date for Venezuelan elections and ratcheting diplomatic pressure on the Cuban leadership.12/16: Evan Ellis examines neck-and-neck presidential races in Peru and Colombia. In Peru, the contest between Keiko Fujimori and Roberto Sanchez carries implications for relations with China. Colombia faces a similar choice between right-wing candidates and the leftist Ivan Cepeda, affecting future security cooperation.13/16: Tal Fortgang discusses St. Mary Catholic Parish v. Roy, a case involving state subsidies for religious schools. Colorado is accused of using secular conditions to exclude religious institutions from preschool programs. The case questions whether states can constitutionally bar religious parents from generally available public benefits.14/16: Tal Fortgang highlights an ecumenical coalition opposing discrimination against religious groups. He cites the Notre Dame Education Law Project as a leader in identifying and rooting out residual legal biases. The segment details specific hostilities in Colorado, where social progressivism often clashes with traditional religious institutions.15/16: Gene Marks observes steady business for construction and safety industries across the US.
