We're happy to welcome back rock n roll comedian Don Jamieson to kick off Season 4 of First Concert Memories! You all may remember Don from That Metal Show on VH1 Classic or from his podcast with Keith Roth, The Rock Strap. To start off Season 4 of the monthly sidecast from your friends at The Ugly American Werewolf in London, Don's sharing his memories of seeing Iron Maiden open for Judas Priest in the summer of 1982. Yes, it's the same tour that Brian Slagel spoke about on FCM earlier this year and yes, we had our friend Steven Michael of the Growin' Up Rock Podcast to talk seeing Maiden helping to assemble Nicko's drumkit. But this night for Don really forged his metal allegiance, made him a lifelong Judas Priest fan and would lead him to That Metal Show and becoming friends with the guys in the band. Don talks about how he discovered the Killers album in a record store and based on Eddie with his axe, he just had to buy the album. Of course, from there he was hooked and as soon as he was old enough to buy the tickets with his lawn mowing money and get a ride from someone with a car (that didn't go in reverse), he jumped at the chance. Hear him regale us with the presence of Paul Di'Anno and how the volume left his ears ringing for days and when he eventually interviewed Paul with Eddie Trunk and Jim Florentine (who were also in the crowd that night) on That Metal Show. Make sure you follow Don @donjamiesonofficial to check out where you can see him live! Ear-X-Tacy was the brainchild of John Timmons, a college student who worked in record stores and decided he'd take his record collection and a $500 cash advance on his MasterCharge to chase his rock n roll dreams. He grew Ear-X-Tacy into the hip capital in town where you could search 10,000 square feet of rock, soul, punk, metal, alternative, local, popular and rare racks for hours. The Foo Fighters, Tenacious D and John Mayer would all perform there on their way to bigger gigs and several generations remember Ear-X-Tacy as a special place in their lives. Like so many other record stores, Ear-X-Tacy is gone. However, John keeps the legacy alive with his weekly radio show (cleverly titled Ear-X-Tacy) where he plays the songs that he loved and inspired him to build the store. The greeks would carve out statues… if they cracked or chipped they would cover them up with marble dust and wax… the problem was when it got to hot the wax would melt and you might end up with a grotesque looking statue…. how many people have been in that situation. They looked great until the heat came… and then.  Ugly!        Point 3:  Pain Builds What Only Struggle Can Build Greek: ὑπομονή (hupomone) — not passive waiting, but active endurance — literally "remaining under." It's the word for a marathon runner in the middle miles, not the person sitting quietly in a waiting room.   You choose to go through the pain.  -  Abraham is told to sacrifice Isaac. He gets up early in the morning to do this. Are you willing to get up early for pain?    -  Can God trust you with pain?    God may call you to do something and you know it will cost you pain.     -  Can God trust you with pain?

As we've professed before on the program, The Wolf & Action Jackson are not the world's biggest Beatles fans. Don't get us wrong - we don't dislike The Beatles and we understand that all they did changed the world and the rock music we love. But they're not our go to, we're Stones fans at the end of the day. Whether you're a Beatlemaniac or not, rock fans owe an enormous debt to John, Paul, George and Ringo. By the summer of 1966, the lads had been around the world several times over, made millions and mingled with world leaders and culture mavens who defined their time on Earth. They finally took a well deserved three months off January - April 1966 to take a breath, see what was going on around the world and incorporate it all into their music. Revolver would be released August 5, 1966 but the lead non-album single from the same sessions, Paperback Writer (backed with Rain) let the world know that they were no longer just singing songs about love and heartache but were moving in new directions as yet unforeseen in the western world of popular music. Sitars and tablas offer up eastern textures to compliment George's ode to free love on Love You To while he sneers in an almost punk way at the Taxman. Paul gives us a classic happy Paul song in Good Day Sunshine but laments a love that's coming to an end with For No One. Stories about dropping acid and psychedelic themes permeate the album as well as Paul's first experience with marijuana on Got to Get You into My Life. Though still in their mid-20s, the boys show a maturity at their writing and arranging craft hard won over the last 4 years. Each of them were starting to branch out to find out who they were as individuals and not just four moptops. The real trick for us is trying to imagine what it was like 60 years ago before Revolver was released. After all, as we're in our fifties, we don't know a world without The Beatles. We sang Yellow Submarine as kids in the 70s having no knowledge of the impact from the guys singing it. Using different instruments and cutting edge recording techniques ushered in a more psychedelic sound that would define the mid-to-late 60s Beatles and that defined the bleeding edge of rock music. Check out our new website: Ugly American Werewolf in London Website Visit our sponsor RareVinyl.com and use code UGLY to save 10% off one ENTIRE ORDER! Can a brand built on purpose survive when its mission is put at risk?  The hosts dive into the escalating conflict between Ben & Jerry's and its parent company over funding cuts to the ice cream maker's philanthropic foundation, debating whether a brand so closely tied to a social mission can preserve its identity after acquisition and how the dispute could influence consumer loyalty in an increasingly competitive premium ice cream category.  The discussion also examines how founders should approach purpose-driven branding, with early-stage sparkling water brand Atomico serving as an example of a young company that integrates its mission into its business without overshadowing the product itself.  The hosts also sample and review a variety of emerging products, including South Chicago Packing's Wagyu Beef Tallow Spray, Cozy's refrigerated snack bars made with grass-fed butter, Bakeful's better-for-you brownies, muffins and donuts, MixMix THC beverage stick packs, and Muffits protein mini muffins. Show notes: 0:20: On Tap. Social Scoops No More? Space Age Sparkling Water. Tallow & Butter. Munchin' On Muffins. The hosts preview two upcoming community events: the Taste Radio Chicago Meetup at Pilot Project Brewing on Aug. 13 and a Nombase webinar featuring executives from Goodles and Culture Pop on July 28. They then explore whether a purpose-driven brand can preserve its identity after being acquired, and how changes to its philanthropic commitments could reshape consumer perception. As a counterpoint, they spotlight an emerging functional sparkling water brand that supports STEM education through NASA Space Camp scholarships. Later, Melissa highlights a beefy cooking spray, Ray shares a pair of brands—one making better-for-you yet indulgent snack bars and another reimagining Hostess-style treats for today's consumers. Mike stirs things up with powdered drink mixes, and the episode wraps with a discussion of protein snacks—because, of course, it does. In this 10th episode interview, Jason Christoff discusses the theory of "uglification," arguing that the modern shift toward brutalist architecture and unsightly fashion is a deliberate form of subconscious mind control. He explains that beautiful, geometric environments elevate human spirit and frequency, whereas drab, concrete structures are engineered to weaken the population's resolve. The conversation links this trend to social engineering tactics designed by ruling groups to foster a lower-vibration, more submissive society. By citing research on how vibration affects water and cellular health, Christoff suggests that aesthetic degradation in music and art serves as an invisible weapon against public well-being. Ultimately, Jason encourages individuals to reclaim their power by intentionally surrounding themselves with beauty, art, and high-quality nutrition. https://www.planetmindcontrol.com/ Key Takeaways: Jason's editorial 0:00 Enshitification 7:12 Join our monthly MASTERCLASS every second Wednesday of the month! Rusty Mansell joins On Texas Football for a raw, football-first conversation about where Texas really stands in the SEC after its battles with Georgia. From the outside looking in, the Longhorns have the talent, the roster, the quarterback buzz and the national spotlight — but Mansell makes clear that the next step is not about hype. It is about whether Texas can win the kind of ugly, physical, line-of-scrimmage games that Georgia has built its empire on. This conversation cuts straight into the heart of the Texas-Georgia rivalry: is Texas ready to be a true SEC monster, or is there still a gap between looking the part and living it every Saturday? Mansell breaks down the difference between athleticism and physicality, between being dangerous and being proven, and between having bark and having bite. For Texas, the challenge is no longer getting noticed. The challenge is beating the standard. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. By 1986, REM were veterans of the college rock scene, had recorded in London and gotten songs into the charts. For their 4th album, Life's Rich Pageant, they took a step forward in stretching not only what they could do musically but voicing social, political and environmental concerns through their lyrics. We don't find it to be totally in your face (as opposed to say, U2) but more subliminal as their lyrics can sometimes be nebulous or at least not straight forward and not about rock cliches like hot rods and chicks (not that there's anything wrong with hot rods and chicks if you know what I'm saying out there boys - Ian Astbury, The Cult). They may sneak in stories about a polluted river in Cuyahoga or regret the rise and fall of a revolutionary in Central America (The Flowers of Guatemala) or even the effects of acid rain damaging our environment (Fall On Me). But they do it with upbeat riffs and guitar runs from Peter Buck with lead singer Michael Stipe delivering the message while bassist Mike Mills provides the counterpoint lyrics to not only tell the story but give REM their signature sound. The driving beat provided by Bill Berry make songs like I Believe an all out rocker you can jump around and shout along to. And they experiment with things like banjos on Swan Swan H and middle eastern sounds on Underneath The Bunker (not quite an instrumental). This album went gold and is the predecessor to Document which would be their first platinum record thanks to The One I Love & It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine). Superman, a cover by the 60's psychedelic band Clique, helped them get in the charts and draw some interest beyond college campuses and college radio. That interest would build to Document which would lead to a $40 million record contract from Warner Brothers and put them on a steeper trajectory to pop superstardom. REM fans are often divided between those who knew and loved them in 80s before they hit it big and those who came to know them thanks to the big record company, expensive videos and pop stylings. For me, the IRS records of the 80s will always be the real REM and Life's Rich Pageant is a great moment in time for them. They've learned the ropes, made some good records and are not complacent - they moved forward believing in themselves, each other and their convictions which would eventually bring them all the success in the world.
