The 1980s were an incredible time for pop and rock music. Thanks to technology and MTV, many genres enjoyed great success throughout the decade. But movies enjoyed quite a heyday as well with blockbusters that created huge stars and studios started to realize that catering to teens and young adults could help you gain viewers. But when music and movies were put together the right way, the outcome could have enormous impact on Generation X and create memories stronger than any made via music or movies alone. So we're proud to offer our personal Top 10 1980s Movie Soundtracks based on our own preferences. Though the criteria might be a little vague, we generally picked out soundtracks that had an impact on us as rock fans and were from movies that were important in the culture. But we also chose soundtracks that were essential to the movie in telling the story and popped up in important scenes. Not all of the music will necessarily be rock but as that's what we love, it dominates our choices. And we made a long list of honorable mentions as some might have been big hits but we didn't like them for whatever reason. Or maybe we loved them as children but they didn't age well or we grew out of them. Nostalgia's a hell of a drug and that's what we felt compiling these lists and sharing them with YOU, the listener. In a rare moment of collective (fatigue / wisdom / pure awesomeness / mental constipation / fugue ß strike as appropriate), The Good The Pod and The Ugly hosts Ken and Ryan have allowed Thomas to pick the flick this season. He took a chance on a film he'd always wanted to but hadn't seen, and that cinema selection took them to church! Tom picked the Mel Gibson co-written, co-produced, and solely(soul-ly?)-directed, Jesus story spoiler: THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST (2004).  To their eternal credit, the hosts with no loyalty to any of the major- or bush-league Christian denominations managed to keep civil and polite, if not to each other then to the source material and Gibson's passionate release. Ryan's Catholic upbringing comes in handy for this, his third viewing, as he explains the church's different classifications of visions and what parts of the film pull from scripture and which are attributable to a 19th century fever dream.    This ep, Ken talks sexy Satan, Ryan talks sexy Jesus, guest Jack has an unsexy hot take takeoff and landing, and his fellow Gen Z'er Tom sticks it to the olds after mis-Clarking. It makes a bigger argument: that the behavior that landed him in federal prison started in childhood. That it was learned. Normalized. That before there was Puff Daddy or Bad Boy Records, there was a kid in Mount Vernon — and whatever happened to that kid matters. Two witnesses make the case against Janice Combs. Tim Patterson, a childhood friend, says he watched Janice physically abuse Sean for years. He describes parties at the family home with pimps, drug dealers, and adults having sex in rooms kids could walk into. Kirk Burrowes, who co-founded Bad Boy Entertainment, says he witnessed Sean slap his mother during an argument after the 1991 City College stampede that killed nine people. Janice is calling it all lies. She says she raised Sean with love and hard work as a single mother. She says Patterson's claims are "salacious" and designed to promote the documentary. She says Burrowes has been trying to steal Bad Boy Records for thirty years and this is just his latest play. But here's what she doesn't address: There's footage of Janice herself joking about giving Sean "a lot of beatings" on national television. And Burrowes kept handwritten journals from his time inside Bad Boy. Today we break down the allegations, the evidence, the rebuttals, and the credibility problems on both sides — including the fact that this documentary was executive produced by 50 Cent, Diddy's longtime rival. Our dog, Missy, had just ridden with us on a 1,600-mile round trip to Chicago and back. That was the first for her. It was a first for me to do it, too, with a dog and we both survived! Miracles still happen. Missy had been through a lot of upheavals in her routine as a result of that trip, and she'd had an exhausting two days. I can't believe now I was empathizing with our dog! Well, anyway, all of this might explain her uncharacteristic behavior when we returned home. She just hunkered down all day long underneath this white cabinet in the kitchen. There was barely enough room for her under there, but no one could coax her out. She was a grump! She didn't come out to eat. Now the two people she responded to the most got down there and tried to speak "doggy" to her. Nothing. Finally, her primary caregiver reached her hand under there and promptly got it nipped by a dog who never did that. This was an animal with an attitude! I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Your Ugly Times." Our word for today from the Word of God comes from 1 Corinthians 13. You may recognize this as being maybe the greatest description of what love really is like in all the Bible. And in a world that's pretty confused about love, 1 Corinthians 13 is more relevant than ever. As you listen, would you think about the people you love and measure how you're treating them by these words from God? Here's verse 4: "Love (and you could say my love for whoever) is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs." See, love is not a feeling. It's not words. It's not the official status of certain people. It's an act or way of treating people - certain ways that I'd like to underscore from these verses. If you love someone it means you treat them with patience, you treat them kindly, and you look for what you can do for them, not what they can do for you. And your love doesn't get easily angered, it doesn't nip at people. Are you listening, Missy? I think that too often we're all like the dog. We're exhausted, we're feeling low, we're thinking of ourselves a lot. Inwardly we've crawled under the cabinet, and instead of responding, we bite, we snarl, we punish people for needing us when we're low. But love is better than that. Just look at the One whose life we're trying to copy. Look at Jesus, experiencing the greatest agony any human has ever experienced as He hangs on a cross, bearing in His soul all the hell of all of us. Is He lashing out? Is He demanding to be left alone in His pain? No, He's reaching out. Jesus - He's patient, He's kind, He's not rude, He's not self-seeking, and He's not easily angered on the cross. He's caring about the need of the man on the next cross, the needs of His mother. He's forgiving those who nailed Him there. I want to be like that, don't you? I know that my tired times, my stressed-out times, my hurting times, a lot of times they don't bring out the best in me. I've nipped at too many people I'm supposed to love in times like that. But those are the times when love shows its true colors, when it's sacrificial, when you give it at a time when you feel like giving out. So maybe you'd like to join me in making Jesus Lord of your ugly times. You say, "Lord, when I'm like this I'm often not like You. Please re-train me Lord. Help me to draw deeply on Your grace and Your love right now. Give me a victory in this time when I feel just like I want to focus on me. Empower me to love people in the times that I would normally be plain old ugly." Remember, you will experience Christ's love and Christ's power on a new level as He overrules your tendency to snarl or to bite. The people around you don't need a wound from you, they need supernatural love.

"Ugly Laws" were ordinances across the United States disallowed anyone who was “diseased, maimed, mutilated or in any way deformed so as to be an unsightly or disgusting object” for appearing in public places. Not shockingly, this was used to discriminate and dehumanize the poor, needy, disabled, and anyone else that gave the vapors to people terrified of people different than them. Yes has been around for more than 55 years. They've made some of the world's best progressive rock music and even had some success on the pop charts. While The Wolf was living in London, he got to see Yes at Royal Albert Hall on the Close to the Edge 50 Tour which was a special night. It was there that he truly came to appreciate the talents of Jon Davison, the lead singer who is very close in age to your hosts. A friend of the late Taylor Hawkins, he does justice to classic Yes songs from throughout the catalog. After that show, The Wolf wanted to make sure he never missed his heroes again as long as Davison was fronting the band. On October 27, the boys came to his town and not only did he attend but he brought The Wolfcub, an aspiring guitar player, to see Steve Howe do his thing live. And they both loved the show (and The Wolfcub was handed an official Steve Howe guitar string!). They performed classics throughout the catalog and then after an intermission played Fragile in it's entirety straight-through, including big hits like Roundabout and Long Distance Runaround. But fan favorites like South Side of the Sky and Heart of the Sunrise really got the diehards on their feet! Steve Howe had his time in the sun on Mood for a Day and Geoff Downes had his spotlight doing the Rick Wakeman penned Cans and Brahms. Billy Sherwood showed why Chris Squire chose him to carry on his legacy, especially on The Fish and Jay Schellen kept them all in time.
