Immortality is hard work.

What does it mean to be “immortal? In Greek mythology, Zeus, Athena and Apollo were among their immortal gods, those who lived forever and had powerful influence over the mortal world. When someone achieves extraordinary levels of greatness in their field, they are often spoken of as being immortal. In American baseball, Babe Ruth and Willie Mays are “immortalized” by the way they played the game. These examples show us that immortality can be applied to mean someone or something as never dying, be it in a physical or an intellectual sense. So, how does the Bible define immortality? As we explore this question, we will see a clear and focused reasoning emerge that elevates what immortality is and who will have it. Immortality: Inherent or a gift? Exploring the biblical concept of immortality requires focusing on its New Testament definition and implications. The Bible defines immortality as the inability to die or decay. This meaning is derived from two Greek words: athanasia (deathlessness) and aphthartos (incorruptibility). The Apostle Paul's writings, especially 1 Corinthians 15, describe how humanity must transform from mortal (liable to die) and corruptible (subject to decay) to immortal and incorruptible in order to inherit the heavenly kingdom of God. These findings clearly indicate that immortality is not an inherent human trait. Rather, it is a rare gift from God. It is given only to faithful followers of Christ who demonstrate self-sacrifice, discipline and obedience to God's truth. Therefore, achieving immortality requires a life dedicated to spiritual growth and living by God's will. So, what about everyone else who has ever lived? These masses of people are offered eternal life—a perpetual existence reliant on God's sustenance. Eternal life allows for the possibility of death if one strays, whereas immortality ensures complete deathlessness. The resurrection and Day of Judgment play crucial roles in offering eternal life to humanity. God's ultimate plan ensures eternal harmony between spiritual and earthly creations, with immortality reserved for a select few who serve as reconcilers. Understanding these levels of existence helps us appreciate God's power, love, justice and wisdom in a deeper way.

Welcome to tour week! Pearl Jam is back on the road hitting the southern United States as a follow up to their 2024 Dark Matter run. Like we always do for every tour, we'll be covering some of the locations that they'll visit as our episodes all month, starting with south Florida representation featuring a Fort Lauderdale show from 1996. Their history in Florida to that point had featured some very notable shows such as a Vote For Change show in Pensacola, one of the best quality bootlegs from St. Petersburg and a show from Miami that caused a riot. This No Code era show may not have had fans storming the gates, but it was a strong showing from the band in a unique venue for them. With the Ticketmaster boycott still in full effect, they opted to play at Fort Lauderdale Stadium, a soccer stadium meant to only seat 8,000 that crammed in 24,000 for this show. This was not a venue known for music, and we'll discuss a little of that in the episode. We'll talk a lot about some great performances of this era, and highlight some of the great moments featuring Jack Irons. We'll dig into excellent renditions of In My Tree, Corduroy, Porch, Immortality and spend a little time talking about how they did it all with Jack without the use of count-ins. Artists create, podcast, and destroy. Welcome back to the podcast where today we're going to be talking about Immortality. Immortality is a game from Sam Barlow, creator of Her Story and Telling Lies and it follows in the same tradition as those games. Largely player-directed, the game involves watching clips of three films and footage associated with them in order to gain an understanding of what happened to the people involved. There is a set point at which the game shows you its credits, but whether you feel done at that point is largely up to you. Differing from the previous games, rather than inputting text to find clips, you click on elements in scenes to cut between them, following actors or props or other elements to see new things, and you can control the speed of playback and even play in reverse. Your understanding of these mechanics and how the internal logic of the match cuts works really determine what kind of agency you can exercise in solving the mysteries, so your milage may vary depending on how much you liked the core loop of Her Story in comparison to this one. Even so, the technical prowess on display here is still incredible, with a surprising dedication to capturing the feel of the eras of film each of the game's three movies represent and performances that don't feel like an imitation so much as part of film canon themselves. We're going to be talking about the feeling of playing Immortality as compared to other games, the surprising directions the narrative takes and how it differed from our own interpretations, and in a spiritual successor to Haunting Those ROMs, we discuss what may be haunting THIS footage. Immortality has been on the list for a while because we have a particular soft spot for Her Story and how different that game felt to anything else, and while this is more refinement than innovation, it's still a really impressive title and would probably give you a similar feeling to us if it is the first of Sam Barlow's games you've played.
