POPULARITY
In honor of National Coming Out Day, KCSU wanted to feature 3 amazing LGBTQ+ musicians in our community. It was a pleasure to talk to Hotel Wifi, Kitty Crimes, and Plasma Canvas about their inspirations and experiences and play 2-3 songs from each artist.
It’s episode 19 and we apparently didn’t get enough kitties last week so they are back this week! Or, maybe the Dear David story was so long it had to be split into two episodes so we had to do kitties one more time. It’s up to you to decide. In our seriously pun-y true crime segment we cover real life kitty criminals. We’ve got feline freedom fighters, klepto kitties, actual cat burglars and so much more. Then we give ourselves the heebie jeebies with part two of the saga of Dear David. Adam Ellis’ 2 cats are high class ghost hunters and there is some seriously crazy stuff going on in that apartment, possibly even a full on demon doll possession??? Follow along with the pics below to traverse the journey with us. Grab the catnip and prepare for some serious crazy cat lady fan girling in our kitty inspired PURR-fect episode. In a remote location north of the Bay Area we didnt so much escape reality as re-create it. The landscape — the fog, the tall trees, the fields dotted with craters and other land art — was a canvas that we played with projecting onto. For two weeks (the length of our residency) we got to live inside of our own imaginations. (Whose imagination are we living in normally? What are we subtly taught to fear? To worship?) In our utopic visions art and queers and femmes have power. Our utopia is creative and collaborative and fun. On the sun porch, we listened to BUFU — our interviews with Kat, Jazmine, Tsige, and Sonia last summer — and heard more signs of utopic scheming & also signs of emergence, the theory of political organizing popularized by the writer and activist adrienne maree brown. Actually, it was BUFU who first told us about Emergent Strategy, when we were just starting to make our own forays into collective organizing and programming. adrienne says imagination is a battle. So whose imagination are you living in? Kitty Crimes has been a visible force in the Colorado music scene for years. MC and guitarist Maria Kohler crafts energetic hip-hop that incorporates pop, rock and experimental music. Kitty Crimes' dazzling live shows are a big reason why Kohler won the "Best Hip-Hop (Solo)" award at this year's Westword Music Awards. Kitty Crimes stopped by the CPR Performance Studio earlier this month. Kohler and producer/trumpeter Andrew Pike played four songs, including a holiday-themed "XXXMas Medley." Kohler also spoke with Bruce Mitchell about her busy year in music, her experience with "sound healing" therapy and her forthcoming mixtape out in early 2018.
"You have to prove it to yourself. There is no other choice. You have to do it well. If you create a scenario that's challenging and you rise to the occasion to meet it, it's very cathartic...That's how you get better" On this episode of Behind The Scene: Guest: Maria Kohler (Kitty Crimes) Official Site: www.kittycrimes.com The song for this episode is called 'Power' and will be on the upcoming Kitty Crimes album!
